Weather in Romania

Climate varies considerably by region. The Carpathian Mountains act as a natural windbreak against cold ocean air masses moving east from the Atlantic and south across Ukraine. Thus, regions south of the Carpathians are warmer year-round than those in the north. The Carpathians' elevations also contribute to lower average temperatures in upland regions. The Black Sea gives the southeastern coast a milder, Mediterranean climate almost year-round.

Romania experiences all four seasons. Winters typically last from November to March, spring from March into May, summer from May to August, and autumn from August to November. July is typically the hottest month. The average summer high temperature at sea level is 30°C (86°F); in the higher elevations of the Transylvanian Plateau, it's 27°C (80°F). January is usually the coldest month, with an average winter low of -1°C (30°F). Average annual precipitation, nationwide, is 66 cm, with the Carpathians receiving much more (mainly as snow) and and the Danube Delta far less. Early summer through early autumn sees the most rain, with the heaviest snows coming in January.
