Approximately one-third of Romania is gently rolling hills and plains. The Romanian Plain flows across the Danube Delta to the Black Sea. The Romanian Plain (including the Bărăgan and Wallachian lowlands) supports a mosaic of agricultural steppe, wetlands and river corridors that sustain a mix of steppe specialists, farmland birds, wetland species and common European mammals. It - lies south of the Carpathians and north of the Danube. The Bărăgan Plain, known for its black soil and a rich humus, is the best‑known steppe sub-region of the Romanian Plain, characterized by a harsh climate with hot and dry summers and cold winters. The Romanian plain is a patchwork of arable fields, remnant steppe grasslands, riverine forests, marshes and oxbow lakes that together determine which wildlife occurs where.
