Romania is considered one of the Balkan countries, along with Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, Turkey and Greece, to name a few. Its size is 238,397 square kilometers (92,046 square miles), roughly the size of Oregon. It sits on the Black Sea with 245km (152 miles) of coastline, which defines its easternmost border. To the South, the Romanian border is largely defined by the mighty Danube River. The legendary Carpathian Mountains dominate the landscape to the West and North. Romania shares borders with Ukraine, Moldova, Hungary, Serbia and Bulgaria.

The major land features of Romania are the rivers Danube, Mures, Olt and Prut; The Romanian Plain, which stretches from the foothills of the Carpathians all the way to the Black Sea; and, of course, the Mountains. All of these regions are abundant in fauna and flora. The Danube Delta is a particularly rich and diverse biome.
