2. Road Trip

Marcus appeals to Wendell's common sense, as the man doesn't seem to realize the dangerous predicament he is in.

"Look, you said it yourself: the deputy called you a liar and even threatened you! Can't you see? They won't let you write about this! You cannot stubbornly ignore the danger you're in, after they set fire to your darkroom! Your career? It could end here!"

He shakes his head. "They are trying to hide something. And we can find out what it is, if you help us. But you've got to convince them you gave up on the story, or you might be the next body mysteriously found in the wild!"
OOC:
pointing out the personal danger he is in, would that grant a bonus die?
Leaving a Persuade roll.

Edit : might not need a bonus after all!

OOC:
That's reasonable. You can roll a bonus die. You've already won (Hard Success vs. Regular Success), but you never know what the dice will tell us.
Wendell's eyes flick to the window and panic crosses his face. "Maybe you're right. We need solid proof if we're going to blow this story wide open. I'll keep digging."

He gives Marcus a nod and a wry smile. "I knew it when I saw your cars rolling into town." He wags his finger. "I said to myself - Wendell, this group is just what you need."

He moves back behind the desk and takes a seat. "No one suspects you. Here's some names you should connect with. I think they know more than they're letting on."

He writes the following names on a sheet of paper: Deputy John Cutter, Dr. Owen Perry, Agnus Bellweather, Mabel Carruthers ... he pauses before adding Rev. Earl Wilson.

Marcus thanks Wendell, relieved to see he managed to make him more cautious, for now...
He looks at the list of names.
OOC:
OK rolling a second time for that bonus die

Another Hard Success. Unfortunately, it doesn't improve the success.

Where to from here?
Jun 28, 2026 8:25 pm
Jocelyn spots Mabel Carruthers on the list and her interest is piqued. "Miss Carruthers..." she says with a pause, "Can you tell me about her? I know she's the librarian here, but i got the feeling she's got some connection with Joe Harlow?"

She pauses again. "Like he's sweet on her or something."
OOC:
Sorry for my recent silence, work has been real busy.

No problem at all. It happens. I assume characters just fade into the background when players are busy. You can jump in whenever it works.
Jun 29, 2026 3:33 pm
Marcus is surprised at Jocelyn's comment about a possible romantic connection between the two...
He stays silent, waiting for Wendell's response.

"Is that so ..." Wendell says straightening in his chair. He grabs the notepad and prepares to jot a note, then seems to think better of it. He puts his pencil down struggling to show restraint.

"Joe Harlow." He sits back and seems to ponder the situation. "I'll be darned. Now that you mention it, I have seen him in town more than usual lately."

He taps the desk lightly. "Good for Joe. He's a good man. Quiet. Keeps to himself mostly since his wife passed."

He gives Jocelyn a sly wink. "Question is - has Miss Carruthers noticed? She's a very focused woman. Books and cats. She's the third generation to oversee the library, and never married."

He gets up and circles the desk, leaning back on it and crossing his arms. "She's teaching her niece Amanda the ropes - preparing her to take over one day." He leans in conspiratorially. "Bit of an odd duck, that one."
Jul 2, 2026 12:59 pm
Addressing Jocelyn, he suggests "perhaps we could part ways to cover more grounds... if you are looking into Miss Carruthers, I can try to visit the Reverend?"

He asks Wendell, "your list of names is incredibly useful, thanks... Is there something I should know about Reverend Wilson, before approaching him?"
Jul 6, 2026 2:38 am
OOC:
TBH, I don't think splitting up helps at all. If one of us fails a roll the other can try, if we are together.
"I feel we should try one of these leads together," says Jocelyn, "To be honest, I'm not much of a conversationalist".

"Wilson ..." Richard Wendell's expression turns sour - working through his thoughts before answering. "Fire and brimstone doesn't quite cover it. He preaches like he's personally disappointed in the human race and is working through it every Sunday."

He taps his chin lightly with a finger. "He won't give you anything if he hasn't seen you in church. That's just how he is. You'll have to ... demonstrate some piety before he'll even talk to you."

"Here's the thing with Wilson. I think he knows something - I don't know what, but he seemed a bit off recently." Richard shrugs. "Maybe someone told him something during confession that's keeping him up at night."
OOC:
Where to first?
Jul 7, 2026 8:24 am
OOC:
OK, let's stick together then. Start with the Librarian, since she is the first one that we inquired about? The Reverend sounds tricky to interact with, at present...
Marcus moves to the exit, greeting Wendell as he does. "Much appreciated, Mr Wendell. Thanks for your precious help, and... remember, we keep all this quiet until we all know more. Things can get dangerous quick, as the fire in your darkroom demonstrated..."

Once outside, they make their way to Cobb's Corner Public Library, easily found in this small hamlet.
"Let's see what Mabel Carruthers can tell us," he says to Jocelyn and Clarissa.
Jul 9, 2026 3:26 am
The library is a single-story wooden building on the edge of town. Old, and weathered with age, it seems quaint. It's outward appearance give no warning of what you find inside.

The door opens on a scene of organized chaos. Books cover every available surface, with a good portion stacked along the floor. There are enough books inside as to require another building of equal size to properly house them all. Well-worn paths wind between the stacks. The threadbare carpet worn through in some spots.

At the center of it all sits the librarian’s desk. It is buried under stacks of books that have been piled all along the counter.

A middle-aged woman with pale blue-green eyes peers through a divide at it's center, her gray hair pulled back into a tight bun. She nods once indicating you've been seen, and she's coming. She leans towards a young woman beside her and says something in a low voice, then circles the desk.

Amanda Wells
The young woman doesn't move. She peers between the books at you. Her dark brown eyes - one of which drifts slightly to the right. Watching. Assessing. A lock of lank, oily black hair falls across her face and she tucks it back behind an ear without looking away.

Mabel Carruthers
The librarian winds her way through the stacks, navigating the maze without looking down once.

Even though there appears to be no-one else in the library, she doesn't speak until she is almost on top of you, then she whispers. "Hello. I'm Miss Caruthers, the librarian. How can I help you?"
Jul 10, 2026 10:52 am
Marcus picks up on the woman's cue, and approaches softly, measuring his steps as if in deference to the printed treasures the Librarian is the keeper of.
In a similar whispered tone to hers he says, "Hello, my name is Marcus, and these ladies are Jocelyn and Clarissa. That is an impressive amount of books you are the custodian of, Miss Caruthers. This seems like a veritable temple of knowledge!"
He thinks complimenting her library might dispose her favorably.

With Wendell and the Sheriff knowing of our purpose here, it would be best to be upfront. Rumors spread fast in small towns... he thinks.

"We are students from Miskatonic University, here for the dual purpose of researching the archaeological past of this region... and to trying to help searching for the missing colleagues. Many of us knew them, you see... there is great concern for them."

"With regards to the former matter... could you point us to any material referencing finds and artifacts discovered in this region? Our understanding is that the wilderness around here was inhabited since time immemorial, and that traces of those ancient ancestors are scattered across the land. Standing stones, burial sites, and such..."

While Jocelyn has warmed to Marcus, his opening line sounded like a cheapchat-up line to her and she reckons Miss Carruthers might have got her back up at that. She looks at her new friend Clarissa and opens her eyes wide with import looking aside at the librarian to suggest that Clarissa try her charm.
OOC:
We've lost our PC with a decent Charm skill - I wouldn't usually ask this, but might our friendly NPC have a decent skill? If not, I'll try, no worries.

OOC:
You are in luck. Clarissa has a 55 in Charm. That said, I don't think it's necessary right now. Your request is reasonable.
Miss Caruthers looks around at the books. "Artifacts and discoveries ..." She taps a finger to her chin and looks from one end of the library to the other. "Could be in treasures ... maybe histories ..." She says largely to herself.

"Come with me."

The librarian leads you to a back corner of the room. She pulls a book from mid-point in a pile, then grabs another book off a top shelf - both from the same author. She then moves to the next aisle and pulls another book from a lower shelf. "You can start with these. I'll see if I can find some more."
OOC:
I'll get each of you to roll Library Use to see what information you find, if any.

The librarian stacks book after book on the desk in front of the group. She seems eager to help, but the materials she brings to the table cover a wide range of topics.

Hours pass as Jocelyn, Marcus & Clarissa dig in. It takes most of the day, but they finally get into a groove of shifting out useful material. Unfortunately, the discard pile is sizable. The useful pile is meager in relation.

The only relevant detail that emerged from the research was documentation of a dig that happened in the region years prior. Researchers were hunting for pasquallium ore, but came up empty handed. They did stumble across traces of what look like petroglyphs carved into the rock face. The book had pictures of the site included.

Mable approaches the table one last time. This time she is empty handed. "I'm sorry, but we are closing in a half hour." She whispers. "Would you like me to set aside any books for tomorrow?"
OOC:
Jocelyn - Can I get a Anthropology roll to determine what she sees in the picture.
Marcus - Can I get a Science (Chemistry) roll to confirm what he knows about pasquallium ore.
