Character Description
Each player starts with two characters, which can be hand-made or rolled randomly. One of them will be more powerful from the start, whereas the other one will start as a mere civilian, who will hopefully rise to greatness.
If you wish to hand-pick everything, choose:
1 Calling
2 Active beats
1 Skill
1 Domain
1 Major or Core ability (only for one of the characters, the other one starts without it). Core abilities have Callings associated to them - you can choose whether to replace the original Calling with them or have 2 Callings
1 Piece of equipment
If you wish to randomize your characters, follow the steps described below. To provide players with an incentive to roll randomly, each randomized character will receive 1 point of Protection to one of their Resistances (protection lowers, and sometimes completely negates the amount of Stress you receive during adventures).
Randomly generated characters can have 1 reroll for cases where you feel the result does not satisfy you.
Step 1 - Character concept
Name - plenty of random generators for inspiration on the internet
Ancestry - Human
Date of birth - Pick a date between 28 SA and 65 SA (it is currently year 78 SA, meaning Storm Age). This will place your character between 13-50 years of age. If you can't decide, you can roll 1d37 for it
Calling - Roll 1d20 and compare it to the List of Callings
Step 2: Skills and Domains
Roll 1d9 and 1d8 to see what are your starting skills and domains.
2. DELVE: Progress into dangerous or unknown territory.
3. DISCERN: Understand the world by drawing on accessible information.
4. ENDURE: Resist the effects of suffering on your body and mind.
5. EVADE: Get away from someone or something that’s trying to track you down.
6. HUNT: Track down someone or something that’s trying to get away from you.
7. KILL: End the lives of people and things with weapons or your bare hands.
8. MEND: Repair something or someone that is broken; build something new.
9. SNEAK: Hide yourself or things from the attention of others.
2. ANCIENT: Ruins and remnants of civilizations past.
3. CHAOS: Actively harmful locations. Places touched by the Storms.
4. FOREIGN: Things out of your known world, yet not actively harmful.
5. HAVEN: Settlements where people live, work and form communities.
6. TECHNOLOGY: Machines, buildings, devices and designing them
7. WILD: Wilderness, vegetation and animals.
8. RELIGION: Gods, religions and their faithful
Step 3: Pick 2 beats from the description of your Calling and mark them onto your sheet - the GM will make effort to have these happen in the game. I do not suggest picking a Zenith beat from the start, these things can take a LOT of time to accomplish.
Step 4: Roll for your starting equipment! This would be a roll of 1d5.
2. Bow and arrow (Kill d6, Ranged)
3. Really big club (Kill d6, Brutal)
4. A stone hand axe (Kill d6, Debilitating)
5. A well made copper knife (Kill D6; Delve d6)
The Kill and Delve represent the skills associated with the item - for example if you use the Kill skill with a Hunting spear, you deal 1d8 stress to target you are trying to Kill.
If you do not have any equipment available, you deal 1d4 stress.
Debilitating = If you hit a target, you roll with mastery on your next attack
Brutal = If you hit a target, roll 2 times when calculating stress and pick the higher amount
1. Blood
2. Mind
3. Echo
4. Fortune
5. Supplies
Step 6: Present your character concept in a few sentences! See if it is possible to link your character to others or the NPCs. Do not get too attached though - this system can be quite deadly and multiple-page backstories may very well come in vain.
The character sheet is on the very top of this post.
