Off of I-68, on the border of River City, there is a sleazy bar beside a cheap motel, called The Dark Moon Tavern. It seems like an ideal trucker stop, but truckers in the know avoid it. It's the kind of place where you might catch a glimpse of fang from that pasty fellow in the corner drinking his wine, or where that robed woman smoking her joint didn't really seem to have much use for her lighter when she lit up. It's a place where everyone has a gun or a knife or both, and when you meet someone who doesn't, you know they're dangerous.

And it's your home.

Because you saw behind the veil, and now you can't ever look back again. The supernatural world isn't hiding anywhere. It's in plain sight, with the normies covering their eyes and ears and pretending that nothing is wrong. People don't believe because they don't want to believe. You've been made outcasts. Rebels fighting for a noble cause no one else will even acknowledge. All you have is each other, and an unlikely family. A group of renegade succubi who grew tired of being servants of evil have escaped to the mortal realm and acquired The Dark Moon Tavern to repurpose it as neutral grounds for any supernatural creatures willing to behave themselves. The succubi can be mischievous and unhelpful at times, and do not join you in battle under any circumstances, but it's still nice to be able to relax with a beverage of your choice and talk about your problems with someone who actually understands what you're going through.

Because you're going through a lot. After all, when the creatures of the night decide they don't want to behave, you're the ones that have to pick up your swords and guns and make things right again. You're the only ones that will, and the only ones that can.

You've got your work cut out for you, Monster Hunters.

Controversial themes: This game will include mild religious themes which will be downplayed as much as possible. The Crusader template wields powers drawn from real-world religions including but not limited to Christianity, Judaism, and Shintoism, and the characters will sometimes fight monsters with religious themes. I do not condone or condemn any real-world religions, nor do I recommend battling demons and fallen angels. We are likely to get some details wrong, but I am not out to offend anyone.

Character restrictions: Templates only. Each template is built on 400 points. To break it down to players who are unfamiliar with GURPS: 50 points would create an ordinary person on the street who is competent at their job. 100 points would create a plucky adventurer who might make a hero one day. 250 points would make an entirely credible action hero. 400 points makes a hero of legend such as Buffy or Angel (two TV shows that will be touchstones for this game).
[ +- ] Templates
Each of these templates has a motivational lens that helps explain how you ended up in The Mission. Choose one. Any template can be combined with any lens, some combinations are more obvious than others, but all combinations work fine.
[ +- ] Motivational lens
Game duration and post frequency: This will be a one-shot adventure, that might become a campaign if the players end up liking the system and setting and we click as a group. I have a lot of experience with play by post and have found that any posting requirements I might have will not survive contact with the enemy (real life), so I am generally pretty lax about this. That being said, I like to give players 48 to 72 hours to post and then try to move on with the game regardless of whether or not everyone has had their turn or not. Exceptions and extensions will be made for those who require them due to real life circumstances. By the way, if you're reading this thread carefully and interested in applying, please DM me with your favorite animal. If you go for a week or longer without posting or communicating with me, you will be removed from the game, and a replacement will be sought.

Specialized software and resources: All OOC communication will take place over a private Discord server. Furthermore, I strongly recommend downloading and familiarizing yourself with GURPS Character Sheet for all your character creation needs. It's free, it's constantly updated, and it does your math for you. Get it here.

Player experience requirements: This game will be open to both new and experienced GURPS players and is explicitly made to be as newbie friendly as possible (which for GURPS is a bit of a tall order). Since I am new to Gamer’s Plane and have never GMed a game on it before, I would strongly prefer at least one player be experienced with the technical aspects and willing to help me.

GURPS is a rules-heavy system about as complicated as D&D 3.5 with all the splatbooks. That doesn't mean it has to be a nightmare, however. Just because there are detailed rules in the base set that describe radiation sickness that even I don't understand doesn't mean we need to be familiar with them. This game is about investigating and confronting monsters, not exploring the ruins of Chernobyl. We'll be using a version of GURPS that is heavily stripped down and action/investigation oriented. I'm not saying it will be easy, but if you're like me and occasionally you like to move away from rules-light systems and just nerd out, then maybe it will be worthwhile.

This game will be welcoming of LGBTQ+ characters and minority or marginalized characters of all descriptions.

How to apply: I do not need a finished character sheet right now. Here is what I do want:

- Your template and motivational lens choices.
- A description of your character, in as few or many words as you'd like.
- Answers to these questions: Who are you as a player (i.e. a powergamer, a roleplayer, an explorer, a puzzle solver, or something else entirely. No wrong answers, just want to see who I'm working with)? Why are you interested in this game? Why do you think you would be a good fit for this game? How much experience do you have with GURPS 4E (hopefully I can get a roughly even split of newcomers and experience)?

I will be actively recruiting for a week or until I've selected my group, whichever comes first. It will not be first come first serve. Once I have a group of three to five hunters that I like (hopefully on the higher end), I'll close recruitment.

Abigail Stevens, Avenging Witch. Abigail lived a quiet life with her parents in a nice neighborhood until her life was turned upside down. One cold winter's night, when she was just 14 years old, a man came to her house. The man claimed he had broken down nearby and that his phone battery was dead. He was asking to borrow a cell phone to call for help. Her father, always ready to help another human being, invited him in to get out of the cold. That proved to be a mistake.

The man turned on her father first, grabbing him with powerful hands. He pulled her father close, and in the next instant, his throat was torn open. The man drank deeply of her father's life force until he released her father, who fell to the floor, dead. Her mother was next to fall victim to the vampire's predations. Abigail doesn't know why she was spared, but the man looked into her eyes, smiled, and turned and left. She called 9-1-1 and told the authorities what had happened, but of course, they dismissed her explanations as shock and assumed that her parents had been murdered.

But Abigail knew the truth, and on that night, she swore an oath to herself to avenge her parents. She would not rest until she had found the monster responsible. While an aunt took over her care, Abigail began to study everything she could find about vampires. She knew that she would require more power than what she had to fight him, so she turned to witchcraft, self-initiating and building up her repertoire. As she studied, she found that magic was not only real but more powerful than she had ever imagined.

By the time she was 21, she was an accomplished witch and had considerable knowledge of the creatures that haunt the night. She began her personal crusade, looking for the creature that killed her parents and taking down others along the way. Abigail has black hair with a single streak of white (acquired the night her parents died), and piercing blue eyes. Though only 5'3" tall and weighing a mere 109 lbs., she is a formidable martial artist as well as a witch. She sees herself as a protector of humanity.

As a player, I enjoy a blend of action and roleplay. As I said in the original thread, I run a weekly Savage Worlds game that uses a similar premise, and I think I would enjoy this game. And, I am a real-life witch (not as powerful as Abigail, but no less faithful).

Since someone else was interested in Inhuman, will pick a different template.

Thinking Experiment designed with their siblings to be an Operative for a private corporation with military funding.

This is Experiment #235 or Ruth. It is her first time going on a mission without supervision and she is excited to show her abilities to who she works for and her new team. Perhaps she'll learn that the supernatural world is not as black and white as she has been taught.

I guess per the DnD 4e DM guide, my playing style is more like Explorer and Thinker. I like to make sure the story is moving forward and thinking of alternative options to problems that pop up in games. I like learning new systems and I would love to be in a game that is welcoming in learning the system while playing the game. I think I can be a good fit in that I can do the Discord chats, keep up with the frequency, and I am happy to be flexible in filling a different role in the party composition if this template and motivation does not fit. Thank you for considering me as a potential player!

I think someone else might have also wanted inhuman. But, a werewolf sounds fun. So I'm putting at least my initial concept as Inhuman Hired Gun.

A dark haired man with a darker past. His claws and fangs for hire to anyone willing to support his need for booze.

I'm described best as a roleplayer. I try to think how a character would behave and stick close to it. Though I do alter a bit if I think it will be a problem for a group/game. My concepts are typically a bit skin deep at first, but I try to build as I play. The world in some ways builds my characters as hard choices and events shape them for better, or worse.

Why am I interested? It sounded cool. Succubus owned establishment (neat). Vampires and all the classic monster types INCLUDING possible fallen angels (yes!). It's sorta a guess on whether I'll find the general vibe fun and at least in concept it sounds like it will be. If not, it's a one-shot. I don't think I've played with anyone currently interested, but I'm a pretty active (private) discord user, and try to be friendly. A few people have enjoyed my contribution in other games here, so I like to think I'm at least worth the shot.

I only vaguely know of GURPS. A friend of mine played a long time ago and spoke of his superhero themed antics. I've heard it's complex at setup, but not as bad during play. The setting has my attention more than the system, but maybe I'll find I like the system too.

GURPS can be a little daunting, especially during character generation, due to the multitude of options available. If you try to use everything, you are dooming yourself to failure. Instead, focus on the character that you want to build and use only the options that apply to that character. Don't be distracted by the cool ability or skill over there that really doesn't fit your concept. Stay focused and concentrate on the things that you need to build the character you want.

This is some good advice, and the whole reason I'm requiring templates instead of just allowing a free-for-all.

In terms of a character, this is the general idea I'm thinking of currently:
Declan Clancy, warrior with the Clergy lens, early 20s. He is a member of a monster-hunting group with ties to the Catholic church, as are his parents and their parents before them. Most of his family specialise in the banishing of malicious spirits, but Declan's skills are of a decidedly more physical bent, focused primarily on swordfighting. In terms of his demeanour, he has been politely described as disciplined and less politely as robotic, owing to his close adherence to a fixed routine and straightforwardness when interacting with others.

As a player, I enjoy a mix of action, setting exploration and a bit of character roleplay. I just like having things to do, really. I'm mainly interested in this game because of the urban fantasy setting and because I've been wanting to give GURPS a try after seeing some examples of how it plays. I prefer RPGs with some 'crunch' to them. I don't have any first-hand experience with GURPS, but I'm willing to learn and understand the system, and I'm open to compromising for the sake of the group. I hope you will consider having me as a member of the group. :)

I'm probably gonna wanna capture the werewolf trope in terms of abilities. Fast, powerful, high sensory. Things that encapsulate the sorta apex hunter that you often see. Do you know if there is a mobile or browser character creator? It's fine if not, just means I'll have to access it when I'm home and on my computer.

I do not believe that there is one, no.

At this point, since interest has slowed down, I will be accepting everyone who has applied so far. I will begin work on the forum and Discord at once.

Anyone who hasn't applied, we still have one slot left open! The guidelines for applications has not changed, this is still not first come first serve.

I was just reading over this for the 3rd or 4th time :) I'm in quite a few games so I did not want to take a spot from someone. If you have need of a 5th player, I would like to be considered.

Concept wise I'm attracted to trying the Psi - although I know that opens up a huge range of options which I would need to filter down.

The most appealing lens might be accidental or operative - but I see someone else going for operative, so chosen one might also be curious to try. I'm tempted to try to incorporate how they got their powers within their lens, but I guess that is not required.

I don't have much more of a concept forming yet - thinking over a few ideas, but nothing had stuck.

Your questions:
How much experience do you have with GURPS 4E - I have a little gurps experience, but it is from 30 years ago so I think it barely counts.

Who are you as a player? I'm old ;) I'd say equal mix role player and explorer, with just a touch of power gamer :)

Why are you interested in this game? I greatly enjoy getting into new systems and trying new game styles which I may not be as comfortable with. This looks interesting and I'm not in any GURPS or anything really in this genre. Maybe this will inspire me to watch the later seasons of Stranger Things.

Why do you think you would be a good fit for this game? Maybe I won't be - it is a bit outside of my normal range, but I enjoy the challenge and I'm reliable :)

My idea with a little more details, should you chose to accept me :)

Joe Turner
Template: Psi Lens: Accidental/Chosen One

Joe was a normal guy in his early twenties. College had not worked out, but he was working at a big retail bookstore in town and things were fine. Often he stopped at several places on his way home, one being a used bookstore where the could dig through the dusty books looking for lost treasures. He dreamed of maybe one day having his own place like this. The other place was a small museum which hosted travelling exhibits.

Joe's life was just fine until two things happened. First, he noticed an odd ring in a Viking exhibit. Silver metal with odd engravings, it seemed to sparkle and catch his eye. No one else seemed to ever notice it. Joe even asked about it and the curator said it was a simple worthless metal ring. Second, the demons came for the ring. While Joe was standing next to the display one afternoon, the beasts smashed through the door and people ran for their lives. Police called it a freak animal attack, but Joe knows better. In that moment of chaos and panic, the ring appeared in Joe's hand and without hesitation, he put it on.

Joe does not remember much of what happened next. His head exploded in the worst migraine possible and the demons were tossed around like paper dolls in an high wind.

It has been a few years since the event and Joe has become different, able to remember and do things which he never could before, and he had joined the war with the hidden things of this world.

Name: Chikane Kawasumi
Template: Crusader / Clergy (Shrine Maiden)
Description: Chikane is a tall elegant japanese woman with long black hair (usually done up), brown almond shaped eyes, and slightly dark skin. She can often be seen wearing her Shrine Maiden outfit

Who are you as a player: I am a role-player first. I enjoy creating characters and being part of their fictional lives. While I certainly enjoy puzzle solving and exploring my first love has always been in the role play.

Why are you interested in this game?: Last time I played GURPS was in high school and using the Palladium system. I'm pretty sure we played it wrong and would like to try doing it the right way.

Why do you think you would be a good fit for this game?: I can usually get along pretty well with other players, and I have enough interest in the subject to keep playing for a good long while.

How much experience do you have with GURPS 4E (hopefully I can get a roughly even split of newcomers and experience)? Just a few years in High School (25 years ago) and that was it.
