On the surface, the Empire is all but invincible. It is the greatest of the Old World’s realms, both in extent and in military might.

Founded two and a half millennia ago, it has withstood countless assaults by Greenskins, Skaven, Chaos, and its many neighbours. Beneath the banner of the twin-tailed comet, emblem of its founder-god Sigmar Heldenhammer, the State Armies of the Empire take to the field behind their mighty Griffon-riding Emperor, confident of victory.

However, scratch the surface and peer just beneath, and things take on a different aspect. There are worrying rumours concerning the Emperor’s health, and he hasn’t been near his Griffon for months. Deep in the remote forests of this vast realm, Beastmen and worse still lurk, even though the forces of Chaos were expelled from the land two centuries ago. The taint of Chaos touches everywhere, inflicting strange mutations that force good folk to hide from their neighbours or face the flames of the witch hunters. Strange and secretive cults worship blasphemous gods with titles like ‘the Changer of the Ways’, ‘the Prince of Pleasure’ and ‘the Father of Decay’.

Beyond the Empire’s borders, past the icy fringes of Kislev and Norsca, the swelling forces of Chaos inhabit the twisted and unnatural Northern Chaos Wastes. Leaders rise and fall, amassing armies to raid and plunder, only to have them disperse again. But rumour suggests a new Chosen of the Ruinous Powers walks the north, and is binding the warlike tribes together. So, the rulers of the Old World do not relax their vigilance. They keep their eyes steadily on this terrible external threat.

But, all of this does not concern you. Your world is smaller, grittier, and far more immediate. You worry about where your next meal will come from - and whether it'll come with a tankard of ale. You hope for a warm, dry place to sleep that isn't crawling with vermin. You keep an eye out for bandits, cutpurses, and worse - knowing they can strip you of what little you have and leave you bleeding in a ditch. The Empire is a hard place for those of your station. You survive by your wits, grit, luck, and stubbornness - scraping by in a world that barely spares a thought for folk like you.

Yet, somehow fate may turn it's gaze upon you. If it does … everything will change.

GAME DETAILS

System:
Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 4th Edition
I’m not an expert in WFRP 4e rules. The system might be a bit crunchy for PbP, so expect the occasional houserule to keep things flowing. My play style leans more heavily on tone and story, so powergamers might get frustrated.

Setting:
The Old World ... well, not the NEW Old World. The, uh … old Old World.
Think Game of Thrones meets Blackadder: grimdark medieval Europe, corruption, Chaos in the north, gutter survival, brutal combat, political scheming — all with just enough dark humour to keep you laughing before something awful happens.

Characters:
Any career from the Core Rulebook. Brass Tier preferred - gutter scum, desperate dreamers, and unlucky fools welcome.

Players:
Anyone is welcome. I’m looking for roleplayers who want to inhabit their character, explore their flaws, ambitions (and poor life choices), and engage with a long-term narrative. Two slots are already taken by members of my in-person group; I aim to recruit 2–3 more players.

HOW TO APPLY

Please post a character concept below — no stats needed yet. Tell me a bit about them - who they are, what they want, and what keeps them awake at night.

I will DM applicants once selections are made.

I'd like to play in your group. I'm thinking a young man who robs graves to make money to go to medical school.

Not signing up to play. But having played and GMd this campaign before, I can recommend it!
Hope you all have a great game :)

I am torn between the following rough ideas:

Concept A: Nun of Shallya
Raised in a nunnery of Shallya the woman is dedicated to the tenets of her goddess. Helping where she can and trying to stand against the Fly Lord's minions. She hopes to one day be able to restore the nunnery to it's former glory, but for that she needs to acquire funds...funds she also need to acquire medicine to heal. So how does can she repay the kindness bestowed upon her? Will she ever be able to repay her debt to the abess and Shallya?

Concept B: Hedge Witch
Daughter of a long line of woman able to do some good, she tries the best she can. Though her mother was chased out of their home a few years back and died only weeks after that...she lost the faith of good in people. May they rot. Her own survival is most important afterall.

Oh, great!

In the 4th edition, the dice give a first idea of what to play; regularly, I'd cope with that.

But if I'm free to decide, a rural character would be fine, suffering from a lack of understanding about the ways of the city.

Either a HedgeWise (OldFaith even?) or a Villager come to my mind. Straightforward, desillusioned and pragmatic, born in this grim world and still living, carving out one's place and probably failing terribly in the process...

Yeah, I’ve been trying to play in a game for a couple of years now. I finally decided to just run it. It’s not quite the same, but it’ll be fun.

Both excellent options! Very different vibe from each. Love it! I am going to keep the post open for the weekend to give others a chance to apply.

True. The random rolling gains you XP that you can use to buy advances. Your description would work with a number of different careers, so you can still roll randomly. Hopefully, Altdorf doesn’t chew you up and spit you out. Lol.

As mentioned above, I’ll keep the game open for the weekend to allow others to apply. Thank you very much for applying!

So, let's elaborate... ;-)

Rüdiger Gutmann
He lived on the quiet edge of the village and came in the evenings to tell old stories, tales, and legends - but usually, only the children listened.

After a stranger visited, people fell ill. Only he, who knew the old forest paths and stories, could help. For the price of persecution!

To escape trouble like suspicious priests or witch-hunters, he left everything behind; his hut, his name. Now he is Waldschrat, a wandering storyteller, careful as trouble follows him.

Motivation: Support the simple folk as the Old Gods would have it.

edit: focused on one character

THE AVARICIOUS PEDDLER

Berta Schatz was born on the forest roads of Reikwald. As soon as she could talk, she was peddling cheap wares, knowing that she risked insolvency if she couldn’t sell. She learned her letters through reading knickknacks and her numbers by counting baubles. Despite the long hours and treacherous conditions, Berta persisted in her trade, having fostered a convivial facade and a calculating mind. She often dreams of a fortune to be won and the pleasures to have from it. Her eyes turn enviously to the rich merchants and their well-furnished coaches that often pass her by. Perhaps the gods could favor her one day.

BELIEFS

I must always have more than I need in coins; I can see no other way to have a warm bed and full belly. Everyone I meet has something they want to sell or buy. It is my labor to understand the correct price for them. The gods will only help those who help themselves: there are chances I must take, risks I must face, to win their favor. In this, a trusted friend is an almost priceless asset.

INSTINCTS

I can’t be friends with everyone, but it costs nothing to be friendly. It’s still hard for the smile that I use to match my eyes, especially if they are strangers. I am wary of things that I don’t know and can’t calculate for. My acquisitiveness is a counter to this. If there is a good coin to be earned, you can count me there.

Things have slowed and it looks like we have many interested parties. I will send out invites tomorrow morning. Thank you all for submitting such great character options. I wish I could include everyone.

I obviously missed this game ad, and that is fair enough. Hopefully, if a spot becomes available in the game this will be advertised again?

Thank you very much for the interest! I was going to keep it open for the full weekend, but then choices just became harder. I will definitely keep you in mind if anyone drops out.

I saw that. I am amazed at how you tackle those big campaigns. I might pick your brain for help.

I’m excited to run it. I picked up the 4e campaign a few years ago. I had tried to get into the game as a player, but couldn’t find a game that fit my schedule. I decided to run it myself. Love the WFRP setting. The campaign material is amazing!

That’s been going on since 2018. Happy to help any way I can, I dip into the 4e books for the campaign too, as some of the changes make it run more smoothly
