Act 1.5 - Delian Tomb: Downstairs

The party steps into a vast chamber. At its center, a glowing white energy field ripples across a gaping opening in the floor, illuminating a staircase descending deeper into the tomb. The walls are carved with grim warnings—"Iulius’s cup shall remain free from the hands of the unworthy. Turn back or perish."

Five stone warriors, their forms smeared with dried blood, encircle the glowing pit like eternal sentinels. Between them, a band of goblins chants in harsh, rhythmic unison, their voices echoing off the cold stone. There are goblin spineCleavers and Warriors, as shown on the map below.

Towering among them is a robed bugbear (B1), its matted fur bristling, eyes wild with fanatic purpose as it leads the ritual. Bound to the southernmost statue is a young woman—Violet—her face bruised. She screams as white tendrils of energy tear from her chest, feeding the pulsing barrier below.

Malfina and Vordokov quickly realize the truth: this is a sacrificial rite. The goblins intend to kill the girl to dispel the magical barrier. Stopping the bugbear—or freeing Violet—will be the only way to end the ritual before it’s too late.

Malfina peeks around the corner and scowls at the ritual. She turns and nods in agreement with Vordokov's assessment. As everyone leaps into action, she points at the Bugbear and calls forth the flame to burn justice into the creature's very bones! Then she steps back out of their sight and presses herself against the wall, melting into a shadow that is hardly visible!

Gain 4 Essence, Move to G3, Main Action to spend 3 Essence to use Flesh a Crucible targeting Bugbear dealing 12 fire damage, use Shadowmeld Maneuver to press against the wall on the southern edge of the square at G3, putting her out of line of sight of all the room's occupants. I will take 1 fewer Essence points next round to have the Flesh a Crucible ability be Persistent.

Naercalad will move to K2, Mark the bugbear and fire 2 shot at the Bugbear and W2.a. I'll spend one focus to gain +4 damage to the Bugbear. If anyone else strikes the bugbear, I'll spend my other focus to cause another +4 damage.

Shrike will fling himself into the room, hugging the wall for most of his dash and then ram bodily into the bugbear.

Knockback 3 spaces (i accidentally rolled Knockback with an assrt but it doesnt change the tier in this case)

Malfina, Naercalad, and Vordokov, you join forces against the bugbear, causing significant damage.

Shrike, you burst into the chamber, hugging the wall before launching yourself straight at the towering bugbear. The impact is thunderous—your shoulder slams into its midsection with enough force to lift the creature off its feet and hurl it backward. It crashes into the glowing energy field at the center of the room, and the air erupts with a blinding flash of white light. The bugbear’s roar of pain is cut short as arcs of crackling energy surge through its body, burning the fur along its arms and face. Then, with a sharp crack of displaced air, the creature vanishes—only to reappear a heartbeat later on the far side of the chamber. The chanting falters as all the goblins attack.

Seeing the bugbear reappear obsidian will move to L3 then use Devastating Rush to move the final three squares to O3 and hit the bugbear. Then use knockback to knock him back into W4.b.

Marbin rushes into the room, seeing the girl, he suddenly dissappear in a bamf of ash and appears next to her.

"Don't worry. You mommy is waiting outside," he says as he cuts her free.

Use my Trigger to act before the next monster group, then I move to I7, then black ash teleport to N11. Then spend my Main Action to cut her free.

Obsidian, you rush and push the bugbear Channeler. It's seriously hurt, but still alive.

Marbin, with a swift slash of your blade, the ropes snap and Violet’s body slumps forward—unconscious, pale, but still breathing. You catch her before she falls, the faintest pulse of life trembling against your arm.

But the ritual doesn’t stop. The white tendrils of energy no longer flow from her chest, but the field across the floor still crackles and hums, unstable and hungry. It seems freeing her wasn’t enough — to truly end this, she’ll have to be taken out of the tomb itself.

Turn 1
The first group of spinecleavers gang around Shrike and Vordokov stabing them with their axes.

They are very Crafty and move so quickly that you are unable to hit them while they circle you.

Moreover, as they push you towards the wall, they are able to continue moving and hit you again!

Shrike, you were pushed 4-1 = 3 squares south by 3 spinecleavers. Then they use the axe again, pushing you towards the wall another 3-1=2 squares. Take 5(⭐)+1(Captain)+6(2x Free Strikes+Captain as there were 3 goblins) +3 (hit the wall) for the first attack +4 ( ✅) +1 (Captain)+6(3 goblins)+4(wall) for the extra attack...

That's a total of 30 damage

Vordokov, I only roll only once for the squad, so you got the same result as Shrike. The only difference is that you were pushed north by 2 spinecleavers and were 1 square closer to the wall. Take 5+2+4+4+2+4=21 damage
Marbin, you were pushed towards the ward by 3 spinecleavers from the group 5. As you hit the magic barrier, you were burned and teleported to somewhere you didn't want to go. (R14)

The Crafty goblin warriors move around the battlefield.

2 of them attack Obsidian, for a total of 10 damage.

3 of them attack Naercalad, for a total of 14 damage. You are also Bleeding! (save ends)

1 of them attack Vordokov, for another 3 damage.

Last but not least, the Bugbear Channeler shifts a single square south and tries to shapechange Obsidian. He fails, but causes 8 corruption damage, nonetheless.
As the heroes engage, the channeler bellows, "The Cup of Iulius shall make the legions of Queen Bargnot strong!"

Malfina, this is a legendary treasure said to have the power to transform even the weakest individuals into powerful warriors. The cup was lost before the fall of the Caelian empire, more than a thousand years ago, though it is said to be magically sealed in the lower levels of the tomb of a Caelian knight who used the cup to turn back an incursion of demons.

Marbin, you notice that the goblins avoid harming Violet, since they want the ritual to kill her and dispel the ward.

Obsidian will turn to face the wall and bring his great maul down with a thundering impact to the groundBACK!!! he will the shift to 04 and use knockback against B1 trying to knock him into the statue and hopefully bounce him off that into the barrier. I will use a surge to increase damage.

The orc regains some vitality at seeing one of his assailants go down, but it is quickly snuffed out by another of them skewering him. His vision wavering, Vordokov says a silent prayer for Grole to heal him, in order to lay these wretched beings to rest and save the girl.

A cocoon of warmth envelops him, healing energies circling about.

He disengages and makes his way back to the hallway where Malfina is, trying to parry further sword strikes.

Fires two shot at Bugbear and W2.a. Bugbear is still marked so everyone get's an edge on the attack. Will spend 1 focus on Bugbear for + 4 damage and the next ally that hits Bugbear, I'll spend another focus on +4 more damage.

Malfina continues to burn the bugbear with her Flame, calls down more on the creatures attacking her nearby friends, and knocks one back into her fire!
OOC:
Malfina gains 4 Essence (2 for new round, 2 for victories, 1 for damage done this round, -1 for Persistent), bringing her to 5. As a free maneuver, she gets to repeat the power roll for her Flesh a Crucible power on Bugbear, who is still in range. Bugbear takes 15 fire damage. As her Main Action, she spends her 5 Essence and conjures a Conflagration, centered to the right of the nearby pillar, at 4K. This hits W2.b, W3.a, W3.b for 10 fire damage each. She makes it Persistent! She then uses the Practical Magic maneuver to knock back S1.e two squares into W2.b and the flame!
(not Sure whether S1.e takes the 10 fire damage or just the 1 point of knock back damage, which W2.b also takes... If W2.b is dead, then I guess S1.e doesn't take knock back damage, but gets knocked back into the flame, taking 10 fire?)

Marbin screams in pain as he is burned by the ward. He shakes his head, and is able to grit his teeth. This won't be how it ends.

He rushes back to Violet, cutting at every monstrosity he passes by.

If I misunderstood that (how minion health works) I would like to take a different turn? Willing to keep my roll and transfer it.
Shrike slams a fist into the goblin crowding in on him between the other two and yanks it against the othrr goblin against the wall and slides around the third and takes just a moment between attacks to catch his breath.

Malfina, your flames roar brighter as Naercalad’s arrows streak past, each strike finding its mark. The bugbear howls, its already hurt body wreathed in fire and pierced through by fletching. With a final, agonized roar, the bugbear collapses, the white energy flow flickering wildly before fading to nothing.

The ritual is over. The ward is intact.

Marbin, you charge through the chaos, blade cutting through the remaining goblins in a blur of desperate fury. Each swing clears your path until you reach Violet once more. She is alive and well. Time to save her.

All around, the surviving goblins wail in terror. Their leader’s death has broken them. They drop weapons, scrambling toward any exit they can find, some diving into the dark corners of the tomb, others clawing madly towards the statue and the upper levels.

Shrike will follow the goblins, chasing the stragglers, and swinging at any that lag behind the others. He's focused kn keeping them fleeing and in a panicmkre than finishing them off, but if any lag too much he will motivate them, or end them, depending on the opportunity. He only follows then as far as the enterance to the tomb.

Vordokov rushes over to the girl, making sure she's in good shape and doesn't require any healing. Satisfied she'll make it through, he glances at the staircase leading down, his curiosity peaked about this Cup the bugbear kept mentioning.

That would have to wait however, as there was a mother desperately waiting for her little girl.

Shrike, Obsidian, you chase the retreating goblins through the tomb. The surviving creatures scramble in pure panic. A few lag behind, and Shrike’s swift strikes send them tumbling, their bodies rolling lifelessly. Obsidian’s great maul crashes down with bone-shattering force, sending the message clear: no regrouping, no return. The remaining goblins vanish into the forest’s dark canopy.

Vordokov, you kneel beside Violet, relief flooding through you as you find her pulse steady and her breath calm—she’ll live. Yet as you glance toward the staircase below, your eyes catch the faint shimmer of the ward still humming across its opening. The ritual may have been broken, but perhaps killing the girl was never the only key—there must be another way to open the path below. Maybe someone in Broadhurst, the village where you met Ashleigh, Violet's mother, knows the secrets of this tomb, or the story of the Cup that this ward protects.

For now, though, it’s time to bring Violet home.

Marbin lets out a sigh of relief when he realizes Violet will be allright. He joinsVordokov in bringing out the girl, ready to bask in the glory of a relieved mother. Once outside though, he takes a moment to go over his wounds and catching his breath.

Naercalad, you move cautiously among the fallen goblins, your sharp eyes scanning for anything of value or significance. When you reach the bugbear’s corpse, searching her thoroughly, you find two rings — both marked by faint traces of dried blood that seem to reappear whenever you wipe them away. They are Bloodbound Bands, magic rings tied to life and shared vitality. One rests on Vorgosh’s hand, the other tucked safely inside her robes, perhaps meant for an apprentice who will now never receive it.

Beneath the folds of cloth, you also uncover two clear lenses carved from volcanic glass, smooth and faintly warm to the touch. Alongside them lies a small parchment written in precise Caelian script — a recipe detailing the creation of Foesense Lenses, powerful psionic spectacles capable of linking one’s perception to an enemy’s very senses.

When the last foe falls or flees, Malfina breathes a sigh of relief. She looks to the girl, but her allies seem to be taking good care of her. So she approaches the magical word and studies it. She has long been a student of magic and history, so perhaps she can gain some insight here.

Malfina, you collect information and perform some magic tests. Your next step would be to find an adequate library and undertake the following Discover Lore project: Unseal the second level of the Delian Tomb (45 Project Points)
As you gather your belongings and take Violet upstairs, its time to leave Delian's Tomb. At least for now.
