Hi all.

Pleased to meet everyone!

I am Gappy. I hope to be playing some games here. I play D&D but also some others like some Pbta, SW and I know Fate a bit.

What I really seek to do is DM a D&D campaign I have been designing. But I am not entirely sure if PBP is a good format for D&D. I surely do hope to get a few good games with you all.

Welcome

D&D works for PBP with a few minor hacks. Primarily by allowing group initiative

GM acts for moster 1 and 2, the PC make their post in any order 2,3,1 and then the GM posts for monster 1,2,3 and so on.

Does it make sense? Other wise, have a look at some of the public D&D games

Welcome Gappy! PBP does play differently than live, in mainly that the pace is slow and so we generally adopt habits that aid us, such as to minimize the back and forth between players and the DM. The benefits are much deeper roleplay than you ever get at a table where many players are often unwilling to fully act or describe their characters emotions and motivations.

Welcome! I DM'd my first D&D campaign here and it worked out great with the slower pace. I would definitely recommend Qralloq's YouTube videos to help figure out how to use many of the tools available here.

Thank you, yes it makes sense. So you'd bundle the PCs on the count of one (their highest?) initiative. Is it proper ettiquette if the DM rolled them all to speed up?

And how about reactions? Ooh, the more I think of it, the more questions I could have.

Having a game where all players know and expect to post at least 1/day each is considered a fast paced PbP game. Games faster than 1/d tend to be in more interactive apps, like discord. But as mentioned there are some trick to make PbP keep moving. Find the balance that works for you and make sure the players are inline with your plans/expectation.

Some DM do more rolls in PbP than IRL to speed things along. I have been in a couple games where the DM did all rolls. But some players like to do their own rolls. It is a preference thing. I tent to use Static Team initiative for most D&D I run. As mentioned in the earlier post you can start with split initiative for faster PC or NPC then group them up. It just makes it faster when everyone knows when things will happen. Team initiative allows players to respond as they have time vs waiting their specific turn order.

Other things to keep the game pace moving can include options like determining how combat works with maps vs theater of the mind. Some to the built in map tools "On the Fly Battle map", while others use VTT either under DM control or shared access. There are some tools to help DM with things like NPC pictures and stats that can be added to a game and/or character sheet to lighten DM work load. There are some tutorials and several veterans that answer questions form the community.
