Part 4: Setting the Stage

"What acting or singing experience do you have?" Aurelia asks, for how could they possibly contemplate casting an inexperienced actor in their fine opera?

OOC:
Do we know of any pre-existing beef between these two?

"What experience do I have?" Ricovial echoes Aurelia's question, eyebrows raised in disbelief. "Good lady, I am a legend of the stage! I have starred in everything from The Barber of Egorian to The Six Trials of Larazod! Granted, it has been some time since I have graced a play with my presence, but I guarantee that once you see me perform, you will be nothing short of amazed!"
OOC:
Yes: Opera divas tend to be outsized personalities, and Ricovial Cebarinne proves no exception. During his career, the mercurial tenor was known for being a perfectionist. His rivalry with Oriole was legendary, and sparks often flew between them—not all of them antagonistic, though the two never fully struck up a romance. When Oriole retired, Ricovial was very publicly scathing about them "giving up," even though he retired shortly thereafter. Theater gossips hold that his heart wasn’t in it anymore without Oriole to clash against. Now, Ricovial runs a voice training school for aspiring singers out of his lavish estate and dedicates some of his personal fortune toward funding operas he deems worthy of his time.

"Sorry for my colleague's lack of awareness," Ramank says. "We've been travelling far and wide, which is what our opera is really about."

He thinks for a moment before uttering. "I think you would be perfect in the role of Etward Ritalson. You could easily convey his dual nature as both friend and foe."
Nov 26, 2025 3:12 pm
Aurelia glares at Ramank, but says nothing as he probably saved the perceived insult from damning the deal. She raises her hands as a gesture of apology.
Nov 26, 2025 6:15 pm
"Can you two share a stage? The show comes first right?" Bekassine ask

"Doctor Ritalson... Yes, that's a role worthy of my talents," Ricovial says with a smirk.

At Bekassine's question, Ricovial scoffs. "Of course. I am nothing if not a consummate professional! Whatever feelings of inadequacy my presence might evoke in Oriole, I will be certain to ignore in lieu of focusing on my craft."

Horace stands tall as the second, and incredibly vicious, strike falls against his opponent. Once his victory in the duel is clear, he spins his blade in a flourish and deftly places it in its scabbard. "You fought well, Vorens," he says. "I bow to your skill with the blade." He follows, as promised, with a polite bow. He accepts the beautifully-crafted rapier with grace before stepping back, thanking Ivran for his sponsorship, and leaving with the others.

He listens to the others discussing with Ricovial. He clears his throat and pulls them aside. "I respect wishing to sway all potential sponsors, but perhaps this is one we should discuss with Oriole? We went to great lengths secure them for the production, and yes - it's ultimately a decision we can make - perhaps it best not to chaff the feathers of our star songbird?"

Horace is right. The last thing we need to happen is for Oriole to take flight," Aurelia says, knowing that keeping their star happy was of paramount importance.

"We'll just have to talk sense to her," Ramank says with a shrug. "If she's a professional she could play with anyone. We could use their enimity in advertising. And she'd probably delight in the thought of striking him down every night for the performance."
Dec 3, 2025 7:30 pm
"I agree, and any sparks between them should only increase sales." Bekassine adds.
Dec 6, 2025 5:38 am
"I leave it in your hands, whether we take on this sponsorship without consulting our lead. It is ultimately our decision, after all."

Having reached a consensus, you tell Ricovial that you accept his terms. "Excellent," Ricovial says with a smirk. With his sponsorship secured, the aiuvarin gifts you with a platinum fortune's coin and a scroll of missed cue.
OOC:
You gain 1 Production Point (27 total now).

Two patrons remain to meet with. The penultimate patron you're scheduled to visit is salmon magnate Tevandis Sastrien. Tevandis agrees to meet with you in his second-floor, river-view office in Silver Suppers, his on-the-docks storefront. This wood-paneled office is decorated with multiple silver sculptures of fish in various poses sitting atop small pedestals. Its most eye-catching feature, however, is an enormous portrait of a mustachioed halfling man above the room’s desk, shaking hands with an anthropomorphic cartoon fish and grinning exuberantly at the viewer.

At the desk sits the man depicted, wearing exactly the same expression. "Welcome! I’m told you have a proposal for me. Please do have a seat!"

Tevandis listens attentively your description of your opera, offering snacks of silver salmon jerky and salmon spread on crackers, all while often exclaiming "Brilliant!" and "Capital!"

Tevandis tells you he’s happy to fund the production, but there’s a catch: he wants his salmon to be showcased in the opera, such as showing the stars eating it (with prominently branded packaging, of course) and mentioning every so often that "We wouldn’t have had the strength to fight without our lunch of Sastrien Salmon!" He even eagerly suggests giving the heroes an ally in the form of a bipedal salmon-costumed character and having an aria dedicated to the fish!
OOC:
You can try to talk Tevandis out of the latter two ideas with either a DC 34 Diplomacy check or a DC 34 Theater Lore check.

For the first time Ramank looks skeptical. "I mean, I guess we could switch out the talking hedgehog with a talking salmon?" he wonders with a shrug, though he's hoping one of his companions could talk the man down.

Aurelia is beginning to find these ridiculous requests from potential benefactors a tad tiresome. Are there no altruistic patrons left in the world today, she wonders? Her disdain must be kept to herself, she knows, if they are to secure the funds. If these kinds of requests continue, there will be little creative control left, as they weave their patrons' requests into the opera's plot.

"What would you say to a compromise?" she asks as she admires the view from the window. "Our actors can be eating salmon, but I'm afraid any outright advertising in the script would go against the spirit of the opera."

The spirit bit was rubbish, of course, but Aurelia couldn't think of anything else to say without offending Tevandis. She uses her natural charm to make her case.

Bekassine talks, mostly to stall until someone else can think of a way to dissuade Tevandis from this ridiculous proposal. "I don't know if having a fish as a character is a good idea if other characters are going to talk about eating fish . . . "
OOC:
i can cast guidance on whomever ends up trying to talk some sense into him. (edit nevermind, didn't see Windyridge's post

Tevandis pushes back at first, but Aurelia's expert negotiating skills eventually convince the halfling to relent. "Very well, I agree to your terms!"

To celebrate his sponsorship, Tevandis gifts you a ring of swimming, four dawnsilver salmon sculptures worth 500 gp each, and a case of fine smoked salmon worth 50 gp.

You gain 1 Production Point.

Vaizeth Ilviak is the final potential sponsor. Unlike the others, the follower of Zon-Kuthon does not own a fancy house, nor do they maintain a storefront or business for their philanthropic pursuits. Much of their wealth quickly gets put back into funding new projects. They agree to meet with you at the Long Roads Coffeehouse, one of Kintargo’s most famous cafes, where the priest often spends time discussing theology with other patrons. They wait for you at a corner table—an incongruously dressed person, gaunt, scarred, and clad in all black with spiked metal piercings running all the way up their ears. In spite of their intimidating garb, however, they offer those approaching a friendly smile.

"Have a seat! Fallenta tells me you’re seeking donors for an opera production. I may not have the deep Kintargan traditions or influence of some of your other potential sponsors, but I’m happy to do what I can."

Vaizeth gladly agrees to sponsor the play but stipulates that you must work in a scene with a sympathetic Kuthite priest—they want the world to know not every worshipper of Zon-Kuthon only desires to spread pain.
OOC:
If you don't think this scene fits with the production, you can dissuade them with a successful DC 34 Diplomacy check.

Bekassine tries to remember the details of their adventures. She wasn't sure if they could meet this request, even if they wanted to. 'I don't think weve come across any priest. I fear that if I do remember one, it'dbe someone that was trying to kill us'
Dec 11, 2025 3:38 pm
Aurelia's lips twitch into the faintest of smiles as Bekassine informs Vaizeth that no such priests were in the story.

Is anyone ever truly altruistic? She wonders about this, her faith in the world taking a dip into pessimism.
Dec 12, 2025 8:56 am
Vaizeth shrugs. "That's okay. Perhaps you could just invent a character for this purpose? It only need be a minor scene, nothing to distract from the main story. Just something to get people thinking of viewing Kuthites in a different light."
