round one, completed

Ember Disengages from the swarm of beetles, brushing the crawling bugs from her body, and moves away in the darkness, quickly outpacing the swarm of voracious insects.

OOC:
@WhtKnt - Just to set expectations: having disengaged and moved away, Ember is in a similar situation to Morton with his zombie: she can get far enough away from the bugs that they have to Dash to catch up to her, but if they catch up to her, she has to Disengage again on the next turn to get away without provoking an attack of opportunity. You can keep doing that; they might eventually lose interest, or you might find a hazard to harm them, or bring them close enough to another target that they will attack instead of you, or even kite them all the way to the Temple! Or you can try to fight (very dangerous) or run away without disengaging (which would allow them to attack her once, but then she would outdistance them).

12 - Beetles
4 - Ember (5/9)

Gotta love that 1 damage.

Round two
(this is preceded by round one)

The swarm of beetles scurry and scuttle through the leaf litter of the forest floor, Dashing to catch up and begin to crawl on Ember again. Feeling the burn of the myriad bites she's already received, the rogue considers some course of action that would prevent her from being bitten again. A stone outcropping juts up out of the darkness to the north of her, and Ember considers whether this might help. ::It'd probably be easier for them to climb than it would be for me:: she thinks. ::If only I could stumble across another carcass or something else they'd like to eat...::

@WanderOne - Since Morton is using a ranged attack on an adjacent enemy, please reroll the attack with DISADV. I'll let you reroll the damage, too.

Eugenios switches from Keolish to Imperial as they group stare at him, though the musical presumably a bard Halfling had spoke crisp Keolish, "I am indeed an Inspector sent to solve the problems belaying this area. I have spoken to the Inn Keeper and a few others, and there is mistrust of a group calling themselves Dungeon Busters. I am not so sure they are to be myself. So I take it you lot represent this group?"

Here I can hold your hat. The elf woman with small flames in her hair offers.
They insisted that I stripped down to prove I didn't have any cultist tattoos

Screaming inwardly in frustration, Ember turns and runs from the bugs, brushing them off as she goes. She is going to try to outrun them.
OOC:
She isn't equipped for swarms, and even though she has a flask of oil that she could use, it might set fire to the forest.

Round two, continued...

Ember runs, and the beetles make one last attempt to feast on her flesh before she outdistances them. But she runs so fast that they drop from her pumping limbs. She quickly outdistances the swarm.
OOC:
@WhtKnt - Congratulations! If you wish, you can engage the swarm with missile weapons from far enough away that it can't catch you (moving away and attacking each round), or you can just leave them behind. Your choice.

Rolls

Swarm of beetles attack on Ember AC14, piercing damage - (1d20+3, 2d4)

1d20+3 : (7) + 3 = 10

2d4 : (12) = 3

Round four, continued...

Morton sticks his Fiend-empowered hand in the zombie's face and releases another blast.
Zombie 2 takes 4 force damage! This explodes part of the corpse's head...but it does not stop the undead monster, as the magic that animates it is not dependent on any particular body part. Completely silent, Zombie 2 flails its arms, attempting to punish Morton for the offense of living and breathing.
Morton takes 11 bludgeoning damage and falls to the ground, dying.
The zombie sways over the half-elf for a moment, and then shambles off to kill something else.
OOC:
@WanderOne - Morton is dying, but not dead. The zombie has left for the time being, so what remains is for you and Arya to make death saves. For drama's sake, I encourage you to roll each one as a separate post, but you do not have to do that. Remember that, any result 10 or higher is a success, but if you roll a 20 on a death save, Morton will regain consciousness with 1 HP. Three non-20 successes would mean that Morton stabilizes, he is no longer dying (and can stop rolling), and someone will likely find him in the forest. A 1 on a death save counts as 2 failures, and 3 failures mean that Morton has died.

Rolls

Zombie 2 slam at Morton AC14, bludgeoning damage - (1d20+3, 1d6+1)

1d20+3 : (20) + 3 = 23

1d6+1 : (6) + 1 = 7

Crit damage - (1d6)

(4) = 4

Round five
(this is preceded by round four, followed by round six)

Arya chokes and wheezes, barely able to draw a breath.
Arya succeeds at her third death save; she has two successes and one failure!
Morton feels something dripping down his cheek, but he can't get his hand to move to wipe it away.
Morton fails his first death save.

14 - Arya (0/10) Dying two successes, one failure
9 - Morton (0/9) Dying one failure
7 - Zombie 1 Dead

Rolls

Arya death save DC10 - (1d20)

Ember runs until her legs can carry her no further. At that point, she collapses, hoping that she is far enough from the bugs that they won't catch up to her.

OOC:
Dark One's Blessing: When I'm reduce a hostile creature to 0 hit points, I gain temporary 5 hit points (+4 CHA +1 Warlock level).
Does Morton actually collapse or his just standing there now with 5 temporary HP and 0 HP? Can Morton use his reaction since he didn't go down per say? Since Morton is partially second level and you said he has the HP and to hit for second level, is his Dark One's Blessing at 1st or 2nd level per the Temporary HP he receives as it is like HP gained per leveling?

OOC:
@WanderOne - Refresh my memory, as I've forgotten: when did Morton reduce a creature to 0 HP last? If he had reduced a creature to 0 HP since the last long rest, you're correct, he would have had 5 temporary HP this whole time, and the 11 damage would have come off of the 5 first, and he would then lose 6 of the actual HP, leaving him standing with 3 HP! Let me know when it was; I neglected to mark it in my notes.

As to the question about level 2: I've said specifically that PCs gain the HP of the gained level, but none of the special/class abilities without training. Class abilities includes Dark One's Blessing, so that remains +5 for Morton for now.

Finally, a side note: when a character is at 0 HP, they are either stable-and-unconscious, or dying. This is true no matter how many temporary HP they have. So a character with 0 HP and 5 temporary HP would still be unconscious or dying. I'll point out that situation - where a character has 0 HP but some amount of temp HP - is an extremely rare edge case. Since damage dealt always removes temporary HP first, there are very few cases where a character would still have temp HP when they are losing HP, much less when they reach 0 HP.

I need to learn to read better. Obviously Dark One's Blessing hasn't activated. So yep. That crit took surprised Morton down. And Morton failed his first death save. And did his next save which was pomising and good. :)

Eugenios is a little taken aback by the request from the young Lady with flaming hair, "My Hat, … I do not see why not. Miss?" He says pulling off his hat releasing a mess of curly dark hair. Moving to the group his eyes linger on the hat for a moment before handing over the hat, as if it was his child. "I can offer my jacket, but you maybe a bit tall for it."

Ember looks up and sees that she has run out of the woods and ended up in the fields of a farm. She doesn't immediately recognize the plants, which only come up to her waist, but they are definitely some type of crop planted in neat rows. There must have been a gap in a fence that she ran right through...

Looking up, Ember can see the top of the imposing Temple of Merikka in the near distance, visible above the occasional tree, farmhouse, and barn, due to its position atop a low rise. It is still a couple of hours before dawn.

Round six
(this is preceded by round five, followed by round seven)

Arya's will flutters between holding onto life or letting go completely.
Arya fails her fourth death save; she has two successes and two failures.
Something within Morton rejects this premise. ::It can't end here!::
Morton succeeds at his second death save; he has one success and one failure.

"You can remove the jacket, instead," says Aanbo. He turns to Ferranzo and continues, "You, too, musical friend. Let me explain... but we have little time so I will instead summarize.

"There is an evil in this town, and its members have marked themselves with a spiral symbol either worn or branded upon their body. We have been ambushed by those who came to us as friends and forced our hands, so we'd like to now get ahead and make sure you are who you say you are."

Aanbo apologizes. "Sorry, not the best way to meet people, but it's definitely not the worst."
Oct 24, 2025 3:50 pm
Aanbo is unfortunatly correct. Before trust, there must be nakedness. Its strange rules the Dungon Busters live by, but there is logic to it
