The galley sways on the dark waters as the rowers snore. The sail is reefed, the oars are shipped, and the ship is anchored within bowshot of the deserted shore, where sunset showed a band of gravel between the shallow water and the tangled grasses of the Malakuti plain.

This morning the rowers were battling the currents at the outflow of the broad river Mala. Here there are only gentle waves.

You are sitting at ease cross-legged on the mid deck, just below the captain's perch. You are talking about your lives, as people do.

"So the Sergeant says to me, Testraa, he says, I can't read your report. An' I says to him, hah, I says, they is a children's school down the street, Sarge, maybe they's can help!" The big bearded man laughs and looks around for similar mirth.

@gtg620q,@Ysolde,@WanderOne

As you sit under the stars and swap tall tales of your doings, you each hear:
• muffled splashing, as if oars are being rowed nearby;
• soft thumps, as if cloth-wrapped oars are being shipped in a boat;
• the distinct "thunks" of multiple grappling hooks catching the gunwale of your ship.

Ardonna is wearing a simple dress, the sleeves are short and show delicate pale arms, her blonde hair is done up in a long braid with a blue bow. Ardonna's blue eyes shine with mirth even as she keeps a firm hand on herself and ensures that there are no smiles or chuckles that might erupt from her own mirth at the funny story.

She considers a tale from her own experiences when the sound comes to her delicate ears. "Well, it seems as if we may have some corsairs coming upon our ship. I think we should greet them and chastise them appropriately for daring to attempt to plunder our vessel. What say the rest of you?"

She will add a tale or two as she has been around.

"Yes. Unwanted company." An axe come to her wanting hands as mercenary her changes to a more combative mood and she listens a moment before she will stalk off to investigate. Active her is in hunter mode.

Zaeed grins and giggles in a rasping pitch at the stories shared. His cloak is pulled tightly around his small frame as the ship sways in the swell. At his turn he shares a tale about a boy he saw slipping a rat into a travelers bag causing a commotion that let him slip away with the man's purse. Quite a hilarious sight.

The new "thumps" sound as Zaeed springs to his feet dagger in hand, only to stumble and sway under the pressure of ship's movement. Sealegs are definitely not in Zaeed's basket of tricks.

You can try to pry the grappling hooks off the boat — a task that will require your hands to overcome the weight of the pirates climbing the lines. But by the time you get to the hooks, the pirates may already be over the rail!

Or you can stand poised to strike as the pirates get onto the deck.

Each pick an option please.

OOC:
She is attempting intimidation. Not sure what dice to roll.
Oct 7, 2025 4:13 pm
OOC:
I'll roll both. The pirate is not expecting to be confronted like this, so I'll give a DS 8.

Rolls

Sherk: Mercenary: 1 - (2d6+1)

(16) + 1 = 8

Sherk: Mind: 1 - (2d6+1)

(11) + 1 = 3

Oct 7, 2025 4:15 pm
The pirate yelps and jumps back off the rail into the water. Meanwhile, two more come tumbling over the rail with long curved knives in their teeth.
OOC:
DS 9 for them to get advantage (you roll extra die drop highest) on you all by the unexpected tumbling moves; on a miss, you all have advantage (roll extra die drop lowest) against them.

Rolls

Pirate 1: Acrobat - (2d6+1)

(44) + 1 = 9

Pirate 2: Acrobat - (2d6+0)

(35) = 8

Oct 7, 2025 4:19 pm
OOC:
Combat will be all you clicking buttons for rolling to Attack and Defend against the pirates; I don't roll.
Three more pirates are gripping the rail as you each have a moment to consider: what to do about the two on deck? You have advantage against the one who screwed up his tumble and is sprawled on his back. The other has somersaulted to a position kind of behind you and who deals with her will roll at disadvantage.
Oct 7, 2025 4:20 pm
OOC:
You assess the pirates are DS 10 for your Defend rolls and DS 8 for your Attack rolls.
Oct 7, 2025 5:16 pm
"I don't think they are listening Sherk. Good try though, would you mind staying up front while I shoot them from here? It would be dreadfully inconvenient if they tore my dress."

Sure, she had a tome, had tattoos and sigils for quite a few spells too and she could even pull out the tome and start chanting if she wanted to. The 'if she wanted to' was the important part there though. She knew that pulling out fire from nowhere or causing fear in her opponents would inevitably bring the sort of trouble that might end up with her being tossed off the ship. Besides, the simple fact was that using physical means against physical attacks was usually the best way to go. She pulled out her bow, slotted an arrow, and fired.

Rolls

Ranged: 3 - (2d6+8)

(52) + 8 = 15

disadvantage die - (1d6)

(6) = 6

"There is more coming to die. Look out for the one that slip past me."

Melee Attack with axe, Damage - (2d6+5, 1d6)

2d6+5 : (41) + 5 = 10

1d6 : (2) = 2

Oct 7, 2025 9:24 pm
Two pirates are ended!

The next three come over the rail but they don't try the fancy tumbling moves. "The ship is ours!" proclaims the one wearing a leather unitard, as he waves a dangerous cutlass at you. They charge. Two go for Ardonna; the one with the cutlass toward Sherk.
OOC:
To Defend against the cutlass, DS 11. To Defend against the other two pirates, DS 10. To attack any of these pirates, DS 9. Ardonna and Sherk are wrongfooted and must roll Defense before Attack. You each get one Attack per round. That includes @gtg620q

"You will die before you pirate this vessel!" She says as trained fighter her attacks onward with her axe. Her savage barbarian blood boiling and only held back by her hunter instincts.
OOC:
Defense Roll DC 11 and Athletic Sherk makes it. Attack on Cutlas Pirate DC 11 and hits him hard as she can if can't deflect.

Defense - (2d6+3)

(36) + 3 = 12

Attack on Cutlass Pirate, Damage - (2d6+5, 1d6)

2d6+5 : (26) + 5 = 13

1d6 : (6) = 6

The heavy cutlass blade hisses through the air where Sherk's shoulder was a moment earlier; she easily slips aside. Her own blade whirls just above the pirate's head. He's out of position, now, and she knows his Luck has run. Her next attack could end him.
Oct 8, 2025 4:07 pm
She attempts to defend herself and barely dodges out of the way. Sherk wasn't going to be enough to keep her safe it seemed, well it had been fun staying on the boat for a while. She taunted the pirates even as she began her spell. She lifted her sleeve on her right side showing the tattoo off and them ensured she had line of sight on her attackers.

"Thought you'd attack the pretty archer instead of the barbarian did you? Well, that was the wrong choice my friends because this pretty young girl is a witch!" She gives a good cackle as she recites ancient words and casts a fear spell on her attackers.
OOC:
Special Item (tattoo), Line of Sight, Obvious Technique = -3AP. Fear might be difficult so possibly -1 but I think she makes it here.

The pair of pirates cower, dropping their long knives to clatter and ring on the plank deck. The night breeze wafts to Ardonna an odor of warm urine. The spell was quite effective.

Stricken by fear, the pirates don't dare to move either toward or away from Ardonna.
Oct 9, 2025 1:22 am
Zaeed is found grasping a barrel for stability on the lightly swaying deck, dagger still in hand.

"That's right you treacherous scaliwags! Cower before us! You'd best surrender before I get over there!"

He takes his hands off the barrel, attempting a step toward the fearful pirates, when a light roll sends him tripping and stumbling toward the opposite gunwale. He's able to land bracing his back and shoulders against the ship's rail wedging him in place.

"On your knees you swine and stay right there!
OOC:
Late to the fight but I'll throw in some comedy. I'm going to call this an attempt to get them to surrender on behalf of the group.
