Devon slid into position above the others, he knew he might only get a few shots before he needed to intercept any orcs coming up the hill.

OOC:
Still waiting on @THAC0 for Constantine's action

Edit: I'll give it till Friday and if there's no update I'll NPC Constantine to keep things rolling, at least for this round.

OOC:
sorry guys, bit of a rough patch here, but I've disowned my family so it should be smooth sailing from this point forward
Constantine has never seen a real orc before. I mean, paintings, sure. But real live ones??
They're a lot bigger than he expected, a LOT bigger. And the smell.....

He bravely sneaks as close as he can get, before trying to knee-cap one with his staff.

OOC:
I hope all goes... well?

OOC:
thanks, but history usually repeats

THAC0 says:
OOC:
I've disowned my family
OOC:
There my interpretation fails - it's like leaving it and breakigng up all contact? Though choice, for sure. Best wishes and much strength to you!
Jan 16, 2026 8:16 pm
OOC:
thank you, I should have done it much, much sooner. You don't have to play the cards you were dealt.
Jan 17, 2026 8:34 pm
OOC:
Oh wow, that is... a lot. Hope things work out for you in the best way possible.
Aldeera tries to sneak about, hoping the sudden appearance and attack of her allies will provide enough of a distraction as she dashes off to a nearby rock she crouches behind. Meanwhile, Theobald's darts announce the offensive, with one landing on the back of an unsuspecting orc (1 Damage to Orc E). Constantine quickly follows suit, barreling down the side of the hill with his staff raised and using all that momentum to bring it down on another orc. It clatters across a barely raised shield and bashes through, leaving the orc shaken but not incapacitated yet (3 Damage to Orc C). From further back, Hanzel lets one shot fly, but it's Devon's arrows that really hit the mark, with devastating effect (4 Damage to Orc C, 3 Damage to Orc D, Both DEAD).

With renewed courage and making the best of the momentary distraction, the warrior woman's blade flashes for a split second, before it impales the orc in front of her, sticking out its back (4+6 Damage to Orc A, DEAD). The remaining trio immediately rush towards her, axes raised, bloodlust in their eyes. The woman does her best to dodge and parry the blows, but it's just too much to account for and one of the axes cuts deep enough to draw crimson (6 Damage to Warrior Woman).
OOC:
That's the end of round 1. For round 2, we shall all declare intentions, roll dice, then I'll roll initiative to determine resolution and the order in which things happen. The three surviving orcs are clearly focusing on the woman and will continue attacking her with their axes, fighting to the death. Constantine is the only one nearby, but with his target killed by Devon's arrow, he's technically not engaged in melee. What do you do?

OOC:
Sorry for the delay folks, work and life hit me with a 1-2 combo but I'm back now.
Missiles rain down on the melee from above and a well placed shot from Theobald lands flush on one of the orcs' forehead, right between the eyes, giving it a shocked expression before Devon's arrow follows up, connecting with enough force to knock it to the ground. In the chaos, Aldeera tries to creep up into the fray without getting shot herself. Her target registers her presence a moment too soon and spins around, trying to knock her away with a shield bash and return focus to the warrior woman. Aldeera has no problem evading that blow and although her assassination attempt doesn't bear fruit for herself, it's just enough of a distraction to give the warrior woman a chance to stab the orc while it has its back turned to her. With only a single enemy left standing, the woman turns to the last orc and just as Constantine rushes in to sweep its legs with a staff attack, she goes high as he goes low, the double offensive giving the orc nowhere to go but down.
OOC:
For future reference, Devon's shortbow has a ROF of 2/1. I believe that means since he got 2 attacks during the surprise round, he'd now get 1 shot this round.
XP: 575 each, adjusted for individual XP bonuses
6 battleaxes
6 shields
150 copper coins, 108 silver coins, 42 gold coins, and 12 uncut gems (1 Tiger Eye Agate worth 9gp, 3 Bloodstones worth 40gp each, 4 White Pearls worth 90gp, 3 Topazes worth 450gp, 1 Blue Sapphire worth 900gp)

With the battle over, the warrior woman lowers her sword and relaxes her stance. Although she speaks to Constantine and Aldeera near her, she clearly has registered the rest of the group peppering down the missile fire from up above too.

Shiraz
"Thank you, travelers, for your assistance. Were it not for you, I'd probably be dead now, especially when I don't have my proper weapons in hand. Those birdfolk nearly cost me my life this time... Anyways, I'm Shiraz. Pleased to make your acquaintance."

Devon put his bow away as he approached. He was not overly skilled with a bow, so had been pleased with the results of his attacks. He pulled his arrows from the dead as they searched the orcs.

"You are welcome. I'm Devon." he glanced around at the dead orcs.

"I think you fought extremely well. Six on one, they seemed very determined to kill you."
OOC:

That's a lot of gems.

Any rolls for the arrows? - I was going to just do that he recovered half.

Constantine has literally never been that scared before. He's suddenly grateful that orcs smell so bad. He may need to change his trousers. Who knew they smell even worse on the inside!?!

His knees are trembling from the trauma of battle, and his stomach is churning from the resulting gore, but Constantine tries his best to act cool.

"some people are afraid of orcs" he says, his voice waivering "but not us lassie. We're - - "

he stops mid-sentence when he sees the gems. The sparkly, colourful, spectacular gems. Gems, to a gnome, are more beautiful than a sunset, more valuable than a palace. He stutters a bit, and stares.

"what, ahhhhh" he grabs the sapphire and his eyes glaze over as his whole body tingles "what ahhh, are we going to, um, do? You know. With these uh, rocks?"

"Glad to meet you, Shiraz," Hanzel says, approaching from where he was attempting to shoot the orcs with his sling. "I'm Hanzel."

His eyebrows raise when he sees just how much the orcs were carrying. "These ones..." he says, nudging an orc's body with his foot. "I take it they were running around killing and looting for a while then."
Jan 25, 2026 2:41 pm
Devon pulled two arrows from the orcs, a third one broke when he tried, a forth had sailed off into the wilds and the warrior had no inclination to go chasing it.

Hearing Constantine sputter about rocks, he looked at what the gnome had found. "I agree, orcs have been busy. We keep them for now." he looked at Shiraz to see if she stated any claim to them. "We trade them later to the noble perhaps. I doubt many could pay for what they are worth." Devon makes no move to take the gem from Constantine, content that the gnome will keep an eye on it for now.

"Shiraz, we were actually looking for you. Those at the inn mentioned you knew this area well. We were hired to investigate the cause of this unnaturally expanding mire. This is the second group of orcs we have found, they seem to be moving into the area with the mire."
Jan 25, 2026 4:56 pm
Theobald waited with held breath while the grown folk spoke, shifting from one foot to the other in his eagerness. He looked at the warrior woman, Shiraz, with a mixture of awe and hope. When a small gap in the conversation finally appeared, he stepped forward and bowed as deeply as his short stature allowed.

"I bid thee a most fair day, Mistress Shiraz," he said, his voice earnest. "I am Theobald, a student of the mystic arts and cousin to the lady Jelenneth. Pray, hast thou seen a maid of her likeness in these wild parts? For I have traveled many a mile to find her, and my heart would be most glad for any tidings thou might share."

Once he had finished his greeting, he looked back at the fallen orcs with a slightly pale face. He knew that even a small wizard must not be wasteful. Moving carefully to avoid the most gruesome parts of the battlefield, he began to pluck his throwing-darts from the earth and the fallen foes.

"I must gather my weapons once more," he murmured to himself, wiping a dart on a patch of grass. "For a wizard should never find himself with an empty hand when evil next doth stir."
