Though some more about this. So far my thoughts were leaning towards something like an EM-Wielding Technomancer, as a refinement of the 'technowizardish' direction (since I don't know the original lore, this is a mostly 'engage in creativity in a vacuum' kind of concept-making). Hopefully that's not much of a potential concept collision.
The gnome artificer and a technowizard might be similar. That doesn't mean you can't do them. Just be aware that there may be some overlap.

I think I want to stay as a gnome, or other appropriate non-human pending through setting investigation, but am flexible on their profession, armored suit warrior, ritual/runic magic channeled through steampunk tech/constructs, gadgeteer rogue, etc. Lots of ways to spin it and I can shift to psionics instead of magic

Indeed. And Fate offers a lot of flexibility as far as character construction.

I played some amalgamation of Rifts back in the 90s! I remember absolutely nothing about it other than I successfully got a hyperdrive working, it just jumped out of the ship without us and took my friends fingers with it :) It was the second RPG I played (After Superfriends). I would love to dive back into that Universe with eyes a little wiser... I poked in the Wiki and something that stuck out to me is a Burster. I envision being one who lost his passion though and is struggling to reignite himself or something like that. Would that work? I have no idea about Fate, but as it sounds easy to pick up, I'll probably need extra help :)

I've thought some about this. I guess a Psi-Warrior might be adjacent to what I'm thinking. Still with the primary specialty of electromagnetokinesis, but without the crafting angle.

Now, I should admit I'm not entirely sure I should be putting forward my candidature, as I'm not as confident in my understanding of the setting and campaign premise and being a good fit (somehow I felt more confident when signing up for Eberron). So if there's a better candidate, that might be a safer bet than me.

@ vicky_molokh : I was having similar thoughts but decided to hold off on anything concrete till after the game started. If you are not going technomancer then Zapper could be an option that matches what you are talking about. A more self contained and directly destructive one at that

I have considered a zapper, but I don't think I quite want a . . . 'squishy psizard' archetype at the moment. Since we're about to play with FAE, I want to use that opportunity to play an archetype that mixes mêlée with more ranged options (whether psi, guns, or magic), and has some non-damaging utility too. Some concepts seem easier to implement in some systems, and this is one of the things that Core/Condensed and FAE differ on.

Okay, after getting a better feel for the work flow this season, I think I'm comfortable fully throwing my hat in the ring now.
