Prelude - Dominic

As you're making your way there, you get a message from NullSignal stating "we" are at a table back by the reference section.

They try to assuage any concerns that raises for you by assuring you that this 3rd party is "like you" and "can help you".

When you arrive at the reference section, perhaps scouting the position before committing to going over, they both look over right at you, as if they somehow already knew it was you and where you were.

You're in a public place, they don't particularly look like their trying to hide anything - they're dressed appropriately for the time of year...

What do you do?

"We?" I never normally meet online contacts suddenly like this, and you’re assuming a lot. Granted, this is all unusual, so see you in fifteen. Just y’know, be aware this is testing my comfort zone and I’m not feeling too comfortable about now.

When Dominic arrives, he casually takes a photo of the doors to the library, and when he goes in sees the two of them suddenly staring at him, he calmly proceeds to take a picture of the two of them as well. Then, a touch more satisfied with thinking of this small assertion of control, he walks up to them, one eyebrow raised. "You looking for me?" he asks casually.

OOC:
These are your Contacts so I want you to name them.
They greet you and introduce themselves by both their online handles and then their "flesh and blood" names, and invite you to sit down.

NullSignal is visibly excited, and he launches into a ramble, "Yea, so... there's no easy way to say this, but... It's more like, it turns out, that YOU were looking for YOU. And... you found yourself...", NullSignal grins at the absurdity of the statement.

"I mean, I'm not going to take ALL the credit but... those files I sent you, they have an ancient history associated with an ancient organization of... musicians, and... well, I don't know exactly, but it appears that the way in which you put them together and made them your own and weave them together with your own sounds and..."

"Identity!", the other chips in.

"It Awakened something in you...", NullSignal looks at you with significance at that last bit.

" You know it's true. And... I know it's true! I, uh, admittedly... was observing you, through the web. I'm sorry, it's just something I do.

Usually when I provide those files to people, they just get frustrated, and indeed I do it to troll people... But YOU...

OmniVox, your life has changed forever.

Working… I’d rather outline descriptions and a few other things besides names; how much detail is too much?

OOC:
You're welcome to provide whatever you want.

I can't guarantee I will use it all. But if it helps you and/or me understand your character and the dots in your Backgrounds?

Go for it!

OOC:
Well, this is embarrassing. I thought I had a mostly clear weekend to work out a couple of mages, but that was before the family took out a chunk of my time, I had to set up a new PC; even the cat was sick! So I haven’t had the time I expected. So, we’ll have to make do with what rough thoughts I had.

NullSignal is a Virtual Adept, skilled in Correspondence, Mind and Prime. His interests typically run to social manipulation; he might describe himself as a musical engineer. He is another electronic musician, composer, songwriter and musical historian. I couldn’t decide which attributes to favour, mental or social, and virtues and flaws have not yet suggested themselves.

HeartSong is an Ecstatic, skilled in Life and Mind, besides some Time awareness. Her attributes favour Physical>Mental>Social. Her background includes some form of military service, and she is a sportswoman who rejoices in the perfection of mind and body, and the music they make rather than external intoxicants. Her music is rooted in the rhythm of a pulse, and of her voice; unsurprisingly, she is a singer and percussionist. I had in mind virtues to reflect an impressive physical presence and an enchanting voice.

No problem. Nice write ups, thanks.

My thought was that HeartSong introduced you to the Traditions, by which route you join the Aetherites.

If there are any elements of OmniVox's early life in learning magick or regarding any of their Backgrounds or Merits that you'd like to zoom in on and roleplay around and flesh out?

We can go ahead and do that here.

But in the mean time, I am also going to open up the first story thread to get you guys going as a cabal in character for your first "adventure", as MaJ has been sidelined for awhile and reversia is also some with their prelude.

I was already thinking, rereading her background, that maybe HeartSong is more like a Celestial Chorister than CofX - thoughts?
Sorry, family interruptions…

That's fine with me. Nothing is written in stone yet.

Dominic sits down, somewhat impressed with NullSignal’s openness; this still feels ridiculous, but not smooth enough to be a scam. "So, basically, what happened to me - and you still haven’t explained what happened to me - was a practical joke gone wrong, or perhaps gone far more right than you expected. You haven’t explained how you know what happened, but you obviously believe that you do. So, I figure you’re still holding out on me. How has my life changed, and what do I do about it?"
OOC:
We clearly don’t need to RP OmniVox’s entire apprenticeship. We probably should work out what his connection to the Etherites is, and how it formed; time was, we were going to split or be split from our Traditions and mentors, etc. Now that the betrayal storyline is no longer front and centre, that will likely be more of an ongoing story element. He’s unlikely to be a star pupil, at least within the Etherites, but somebody obviously thought he had enough potential to warrant exposure to the Kitab-al-Alcir. That person was presumably a prospective Mentor; we should work out what happened to that relationship. Of course, I could easily put that spare dot into Mentor.
Edit: Just checked out the IC thread; should I have read the others’ preludes? I’m not clear whose voice is which or if John has multiple personalities (?).

ThetaSigma says:

OOC:
John biggest uhh "thing" is a self-created dream realm, populated by imitations of people who died during his Awakening. I thought about color marking their speech to distinguish them or do a more concrete write-ups on each as they speak, but ultimately decided against that. In essence these are dream-spirits, so they are unlikely to come into play for other characters (unless..?). It's mostly John specific thing and done for flavor. I might expand on that later, just didn't want to pad already massive post by introducing even more characters.
Quick edit: John's NPCs (if you care):
Bitsie, Professor Lindsey (or Professor), Doctor Yamamoto (Doctor) - trio of mentors, hermetic mages from the Chantry
Todd - Chantry acolyte (non-mage)
Red/Malcolm, Tish, Joel - dream-spirits residing in John's dream realm (Demesne)

Thanks @reversia; that primer helps. No Mind nor Spirit in Dominic, so a dream-encounter seems unlikely. I’ve had a read and so long as I can recognise John’s own speech and actions, shouldn’t be an issue.

I think for now it seems best to put the spare background dot into Mentor, likely reflecting a somewhat distant relationship with a capable Etherite who regards Dominic as a low priority most of the time. I could see that resulting from them being deeply involved in nanotechnology, and annoyed that his first application for it was a mobile, self-propagating sound system…

Yea, so I would see his connection to the Etherites forming essentially by choice.

The VA "discovered" you > introduced you to the Ecstatic, whom as a member of the Traditions > introduces you to the Traditions/Chantry where by their normal tutelage process, guides you to the Etherites due to your Primary Sphere and Paradigm etc.

I would support the dot going into Mentor if that makes sense now.
