7. Return to the Halls

Aug 14, 2025 11:54 am
After three weeks in Gosterwick, it’s good to be back on the road. An early start on a cool and showery day has you arriving at the foot of The Long Falls by noon. From there, you rope-up and begin the treacherous ascent.

By 2:00 pm, you’ve completed the first two sections of the climb and are roughly halfway up the cliff face. Here, you pause to investigate the outpost you discovered on your original journey.

A 20’-wide entrance into the cliff face leads to a low (8’-tall) chamber that has been neatly carved from the rock. As before, the only obvious contents are a fire-circle and a supply of firewood.

Jacky eyes the pile of firewood. Cooking fires are certainly one thing halflings are familiar with, and by association, the means to making them. Has the quantity of wood changed since he and the others last ventured here? Is there any sign that the wood's been left untouched for a while, like a covering of dust?

Grim waddles over to the entrance, and checks the stonework for interesting markings. Etchings into stone, perhaps where other travelers have left their mark?
Aug 14, 2025 5:49 pm
Ella immediately begins to walk, at a slow pace, around the room’s perimeter, starting with the left side. She has a couple of fingers of an outstretched left hand sliding delicately along the wall, sensing any changes in make, temperature and texture which might awaken her ancestral understanding of concealed passages.
OOC:
Ella will take the time needed to search each 10’ stretch of the room’s interior walls. Looking for any unusual features.
Aug 15, 2025 2:08 am
Thrud watches his companions spread out to investigate, unsure what to do himself. Suddenly remembering the chalk in his pack, he pulls it out and finds a clear spot on the wall and begins carefully scratching his name in child-like scrawl into the wall.
Aug 15, 2025 1:16 pm
Hector, visibly pale from his first experience of ascending the perilous cliffside path, hastily pulls a torch from his pack and lights it to aid your exploration of the outpost.

It’s quite a sizable pile of firewood; Jacky reckons enough for about two weeks. It doesn’t appear to have been used recently - the wood is very dry and there are traces of dust and (small, non-threatening!) cobwebs on its surfaces. He doesn’t think the amount of firewood has changed significantly since he was last here.
WhiteDwarf says:

He can see no markings. The stone, whilst neatly worked, is devoid of any decoration or ornamentation. Grim recognises it as being of Archontean construction.

If everybody chips in, it will take two turns to search all of the walls in the chamber.

As far as you can tell, there are no concealed features.

Here we go again. 500 gp for 10 years, that's 50gp a year. By this rate, I expect to be 1500 years old by the time we're done, Zach thinks morosely. Lowering his pack but keeping his weaponry, Zach wanders over to Ellagel and asks "Lady Ermentrout, you seem occupied, is there anything I can do?"

"When people see, they know this Thrud place! Maybe they scared of strong fighter!"
OOC:
I went back and reviewed our first trek up, there were 2 caves along this right-side path. This was the first one, and we already explored it then. However, the next one up we did not go in and explore. I suggest we continue up and check that one out. There was also a path on the left of the waterfall that looked like it did not go all the way to the top that might be worth exploring.

Below is all we saw of the 2nd opening last visit.
Burbage says:
Grimidek’s infravision allows him to investigate the opening. He sees a 20’ long entrance passage that leads to a small H-shaped layout with two distinct "arms" to the left and right. Both arms are choked with thick, ropey cobwebs. Again, these chambers have been excavated from the rock with skill and precision.

From Grim’s cursory glance, there are no signs of any current inhabitants or recent activity.

It sounds like most party members want to press on towards the plateau at the top of the cliff. I will assume this is your course of action in tomorrow’s post, unless you tell me otherwise.
Aug 16, 2025 11:31 pm
OOC:
Yep, might as well poke around those places while we're nearby.
Aug 17, 2025 1:52 am
"You may stand guard, Zacharias Polipulis, unless you can think of a more profitable activity," the elf responded happily.
Aug 17, 2025 4:05 am
Zach squares his shoulders and resolutely stands at attention, prepared for danger.
Aug 17, 2025 8:45 am
Finding nothing of interest in the lower outpost, you press on and ascend the next section of the climb.

Forty minutes later, you arrive at the second entrance in the cliff face.

Stepping over the fragments of the smashed stone door and peering inside, you see a chamber that is 20’ wide and 20’ deep. The floor is littered with various items of adventuring trash. From the middle of the left- and right-hand walls, two further passageways lead away from the main chamber. However, both are choked with thick, ropey cobwebs.

Jacky pauses. "I remember hearing something about big spiders carrying magic wands. That Plumthorn and his cronies are supposed to have a bunch too. If they stole the wands from the spiders, that's a tidbit that might come in handy.

"Of course, if we want to talk to the spiders, we probably shouldn't set their webs on fire.

"If we can speak the same language, that is."

Thrud finds nothing usable amongst the litter. It’s all been discarded for a reason - broken, decayed, missing pieces, etc.

The individual strands of the cobwebs are distinctly thicker than those you would expect from a normal spider. Whilst they are densely woven, they also look quite old.

The opening is not "cave"-like (in the sense that a cave is a natural rock feature). Rather, it has been carved into the rock face with a high degree of skill and precision. Surfaces are smooth and corners sharp. The craftsmanship is of a similar quality to that in the halls beneath the pyramid.

The side passages to the left and right, as far as you can see, are level. Of the limited sections that are visible, they neither ascend nor descend. However, beyond the first couple of feet, the cobwebs obscure what lies beyond.

Aug 23, 2025 10:34 am
The cobwebs burn, albeit slowly and with much black smoke, which pushes out towards the entrance. Given your position, high up the cliff, you’ve probably created quite a smoke signal!

It takes two turns for the smoke to clear sufficiently so that you’re able to get a look at what they were concealing. Branching from the main entrance chamber are two 5’ x 5’ passageways, one on the left and one on the right. Each opens up into a 20’ x 20’ side chamber. The chamber on the right appears empty, but the one on the left has a skeleton slumped against the far wall.

The skeleton is of a dwarf. He or she is still clad in chain mail and is clutching a war hammer in their bony hand. Around their neck is a 4" long oblong of carved stone on a leather cord. A rotting pouch lies just to their side. Most noticeably, they are wearing a pair of remarkably fresh-looking burgundy-coloured leather half boots, with fancy blue-tooled designs.

Aug 24, 2025 7:29 am
WhiteDwarf says:
Grim inspects the interesting stone stranded around the skeleton’s neck.
Grim immediately recognises the significance of the skeleton’s neckwear - it is a Dwarven Life-Stone. Through an enchantment known only to dwarven rune-smiths, life-stones are imbued with a power such that they glow with a low, yellow light so long as their owner lives. Should the owner die, the stone loses its enchantments. Life-stones allow trained dwarven delvers to locate missing members of a clan.

Life-stones are considered sacred by the clans, and great effort is expended to locate and recover the life-stones of dead clansmen. Most poignantly for Grim, this particular life-stone is carved from granite, indicating that this dwarf was a member of his ancestral clan. Runes carved into the life-stone identify the owner as "Grorim Granite".

(Clanless dwarves do not have life-stones; I’ll leave it up to you as to whether Grim has a life-stone or not).

They are carefully hewn stone chambers. The ceiling is not particularly high - no more than 8’. Hector’s torch gives you good visibility of your surroundings.

Grim picks up the pouch lying beside the dead dwarf. Inside is a vial filled with a light-blue powder laced with sparkling motes.

The dwarf’s boots are some of the finest that Zach has ever seen - pristine, supple, burgundy leather with blue detailing. They look new rather than something that has been sitting undisturbed in a cave for goodness knows how long.

Zach is not the sharpest cheese in the cave, but even he knows that the boots' appearance is extraordinary. Turning to Jacky, Zach says "Joshua, doesn't it seem strange that the boots look so, so, new? I think there is something special about them, but knowing my luck, that would be some kind of curse. I wish there was a way to identify their nature."

Aug 27, 2025 8:37 am
Jacky pulls on the burgundy boots. Although his halfling feet are shaped very differently from those of the previous wearer, he finds that they fit remarkably well. Jacky takes a few test strides and is mightily impressed - these are by far the most comfortable boots he has ever worn - and that’s saying something for a halfling who often prefers to go barefoot.

The remainder of the ascent to the plateau takes an hour and forty minutes, and is uneventful. It’s about half past five when you finally make it to the cliff gate at the top of the Long Stair, flanked on either side by its ruined towers.

I’ll refer you to the map of the ruined city as a reminder of its layout and possible sites for exploration.

Sep 12, 2025 2:29 pm
"We head towards the Inn, yes?" the elf asked, noticing a degree of hesitation that could not be solely explained by the fatigue of the afternoon's climb.
OOC:
So we are an hour or a bit more away from sunset? I think that exploration of the town exposes us to being seen by the dragon, if we tarry a bit too long. I'd say we rest, and start off early in the morning to explore the surface, or go back through the pyramid, if no other entrance is found.
Sep 12, 2025 10:11 pm
OOC:
This was the estimate we had, which means we can make the inn in 50 minutes. The sun sets at 8.30pm or so.

I don't mind heading toward the inn, but why don't we take a longer route since we have the spare time?

OOC:

The ruined city covers the entire extent of the map ... everything inside the fragmented outer walls.

The structure in the middle of the river is a mostly destroyed citadel consisting of a couple of towers (one partly intact, the other strangely pristine), the remains of a curtain wall, and a larger fortification that is in a poor state of repair.

"Better get a move on," Jacky says. "Let's go by the river - I think I saw some bridges last time that we can cut across."
Sep 16, 2025 2:02 pm
Which are the bridges that Jacky is referring to? There are a couple due west of you, to the south of the lake. Or there is also one just to the north of the lake. And indeed others further north than that.

You're currently at the Cliff Gate, southeast of the obelisk.

Ruined City
You enter the ruined city through the southerly Cliff Gate at the top of the Long Stair and proceed along the wide cobblestone boulevard until you reach the inscribed granite obelisk that you investigated previously.

At that point, rather than continuing to follow the boulevard as it turns to the north towards the pyramid, you strike out through the ruins of the city towards the bridge at the northern end of the lake.

The lake itself appears artificial, seemingly having been created by damming the Swift River. The lake’s water is cloudy with silt and dotted with lily pads and reeds. At its western side, it blends seamlessly into a swamp. Away to the southwest, you see a crocodile slide from the muddy bank and into the water.

It takes you about 20 minutes to pick a route through the rubble and overgrown foliage of the ruins and arrive at the bridge. It is a narrow (5’ wide) footbridge, constructed from iron. Whilst pitted with age, it appears sound.

Just to the north, on your right, there is a lagoon with the remains of docks built from cement. They are in poor condition and on the verge of collapse.

Thrudmarr has been unusually quiet during the trek up the stairs and through the city, trudging along with heavy steps. The rubble and overgrown streets held little interest for him after their previous exploration. Striking out in a new direction though his head raises with renewed curiosity.

"Big lizard!" he points out excitedly upon spotting the gator.
Sep 19, 2025 8:56 pm
"Never seen one quite as big as that before, oh my." Jacky agrees. "Let's hope that it stays inside the water."

As they get closer, Jacky looks for any way to get across the lake to its opposite shore. Can they reach it by foot?

Sep 21, 2025 6:35 am

"Iron bridge should be safe, yes?"
OOC:
Beyond the large, oval cobbled surface there seems to be a walled structure. Are the walls fortified and tall, or more like an urban wall meant to delimit a private property?

The wall to the north of the oval boulevard looks like it was once around 8’ tall, although much of it is now crumbled, with gaps aplenty. Beyond, looming above the wall, are the remains of a palace. It was once a sizable building - perhaps as much as four stories tall - and consisting of a central section flanked by eastern and western wings. However, only the eastern wing now remains as anything other than ruins and rubble, with a roof that includes a still-intact 25’-diameter dome. Also, somewhat strangely, the palace’s 15’ tall ebony main entrance doors are also still in place (and shut).
matmaisan says:
OOC:
Also, can we see the statue across the bridge yet? Is it a monumental statue meant to be seen from afar?
From your position on the iron bridge, you can see the remains of two statues.

To the northeast, just beyond the docks, is a pediment topped with two enormous marble feet and ankles. The remainder of the body is nowhere to be seen.

Further away to the northwest is a 30’ tall, almost complete statue of a seated and robed figure, only missing its head.

Sep 24, 2025 5:05 pm
You traverse the iron bridge and turn to the north, past the western docks and across the cobbled oval boulevard, before halting at the 15’-tall ebony doors that guard the entrance to the palace.

It appears that the doors would provide access to the still somewhat intact eastern wing of the ruined palace. However, the palace’s northern and western sections have collapsed completely and are little more than piles of rubble.

Jacky sizes up the gigantic black doors. "Do you think these were built for giants to enter, or simply to flaunt?"

The halfling makes a closer study of the doors. What material are they made out of? He raps a knuckle on them. Are there any interesting features or ornamentation on them?
Sep 26, 2025 9:07 am
Grim waddles just right of the massive doors. Checking the palace walls, and gleaning what information he can about who might have crafted the stonework.
Sep 27, 2025 10:35 am
Palace Ruins
The doors are made of dark wood. From the scale and grandeur of the wider building, you get the impression that their size is intended to denote status, rather than being a necessity for large occupants. Other than their size, there's nothing distinctive about them in terms of features or ornamentation.

It’s clear to Grim that the architecture of the palace is Archontean - similar to that which you’ve seen in the Halls.

As soon as Jacky raps on the door, a booming voice declares something sternly in Mithric. Only Grim (I think) understands that it is saying "Stand aside, citizen. This is not your home!"

(Zach may, if he wishes, attempt to roll under his Intelligence on 4d6 to understand it, if he still considers himself a student of Mithric).

Thrudmarr jumps back when the booming voice erupts from the doors

"Doors talk?! Magic doors!"

He steps closer, eyeing for any weak points.

"Wood is wood...axe cut wood good!" he looks at the rest of the group questioningly.
Sep 29, 2025 5:09 am
"No! No choppy choppy yet, good Thrudmarr Halvorsson the Finder! Doors that talk probably hide other guardians. Maybe we look around more, before we start breaking pretty doors!"

Ellagel is clearly concerned with the prospect of her party just breaking down this door. Who knows how many spectres or ghouls might be resting beyond?

The two hirelings shrug and shake their heads. They seem somewhat in awe of the scale of the doors, and more than a little shaken by the strange voice.
WhiteDwarf says:
Grim waddles left, around perimeter, checking the outer wall every five feet for secret doors.
Walking to the left of the door, towards what was the western wing, it quickly becomes clear to Grim that this part of the palace is completely ruined (you may, if you wish, search the ruins, but it will be little more than sifting through piles of rubble, rather than exploring actual rooms).

Doubling back and exploring the perimeter of the eastern wing of the palace to the right, Grim can see that there are the remnants of an intact structure that would be explorable, but the only way of reaching it would be through the double doors.

Grim does spot one other feature during his wandering. Behind the palace ruins, to the north-east, is the 10’ stump of what was once a taller obelisk. It reminds you of the obelisk near the Cliff Gate, containing the same inscription and ankh-shaped indentation. The main difference is that this obelisk features iconography of the moon rather than the sun.

Thrudmarr has been standing back while the others examine the palace, investigate obelisks, and discuss riddles. He scratches his head, clearly lost in the conversation about moons and suns.

"Thrud no understand moon words."

Good question. That is the description used by the author. I took it to mean a plinth upon which the rest of the statue sits. But, technically, it seems that a "pediment" is a triangular-shaped architectural element such as you might find atop a series of pillars. For clarity, let's just substitute "pediment" with "plinth".

Jacky walks in a circle around the plinth, looking for any inscriptions or etchings that might offer a clue about the once statue. "I wonder if these would resize to fit them as well?" he asks idly, nodding at his presumably magical shoes.
Oct 16, 2025 11:53 pm
Thrud circles the plinth, brushing away any dirt or debris to clear any hidden markings. He looks down at Jacky's burgundy boots, then back up at the massive marble ankles, trying to imagine the size difference.

"That be very much magic!"
Oct 17, 2025 6:59 am
Ellagel stands back from the plinth and her companions currently examining it. She observed the area around, keeping watch for any unexpected movements in the environs.
OOC:
Are the remains of the statue anywhere around here? Are there any fragments obvioulsy laying around the immediate vicinity of the plinth?
Oct 17, 2025 1:41 pm
The feet are not bare. They are depicted as wearing armoured boots, as if the statue is of some great warrior.

There is nothing else about the feet, or the plinth upon which they are mounted, that gives a direct indication as to who they belong to. And, whilst there is plenty of rubble lying around, it is mostly stonework. There are no marble-like materials similar to those used for the feet.

Overall, Grim is impressed, as much by the apparent scale of the statue as the quality of the workmanship. If the statue once stood complete, it must have been an impressive feat of engineering and logistics, as well as one of artistry - something that wouldn’t have looked out of place in most dwarven halls.

I'm going to move things along. However, if there's anything you'd like to do en route to the Broken Head, let me know and we can rewind ...

---

Leaving the mysteries of the stone feet and the obelisk intact, you head north towards the sanctuary of the Broken Head. Keeping the river on your left-hand side, you pick your way through the ruins. As you pass through a gap in the city walls, the guards at the northern gate, away to your right, wave cheerily.

It’s almost 7 pm by the time you stamp the mud from your boots and pass beneath the colossal marble head of Arden that guards the inn's main entrance. Although it’s been over three weeks since you were last here, everything is reassuringly familiar. Kronos and his wife Estelle are chatting behind the bar. The three statue brokers from the Factors are gathered around a table by the fireplace, playing cards. And the Wiskin merchant, Dagmar, is enjoying a large bowl of stew.

"Well, well, well …," bellows Kronos as you file into the common room. "I was wondering if I’d see you lot again. You caused quite a stir last time, and no mistake."

"Well, now that we don’t have to keep you and the Darlings from each other's throats, there’s plenty of space in the bunkroom. The private room’s taken, though. A patrol of Knights of the Azure Shield has it booked for the week."

The bunkroom costs 10 sp/person/day, or 3 gp/person/week.

"The bunkroom will suit us nicely," Jacky says with a nod.

Once the lodgings are settled, the halfling wanders over to three brokers' game. If they seem open to adding a new player, Jacky will ask about the table stakes. Joining in seems like a good chance to while away some time and make conversation with the trio.

Ella is exhausted from the trip. She will eat her stew, and drink tea made from leaves she brought from town. She looks about quietly, but does not engage much with her companions and not at all with the other patrons. She is always impressed by Jacky’s willingness to talk to anyone. So hasty in all things. She wonders if they’ll be rid of the darlings for all time, or if they might return to harass her party.

Zach appreciates letting his pack down at his bed in the bunkroom. Checking his pouch, he figures, carry the two, or was it three? and carry it where? I'm confused he can pay for three or four weeks worth of lodging. Heading downstairs, he walks over to where the rest of his party is, considering if there is anything they need to do before dinner and bed.

Just to clarify, the rate of time progression is completely in your hands. Don't feel that you have to play everything turn-by-turn. If you want to fast forward to the next bit of action (e.g. "We stay the night at the Broken Head and resume our exploration of the Halls the following morning"), that's absolutely fine. But the onus is on you to move the action forward - there's no script that we're following here. I'm as keen to get back to the dungeoneering as you are!

I'm enjoying the non-delving sections of the game, but it's true that we've been out of the dungeon for a while. Paying 10% of treasure to the halfling gang isn't very nice.

Zach sees Jacky standing over—well, near was a better adjective given Jacky's diminutive height—one of the gambling tables. Making his way to the halfling, Zach politely taps him on the shoulder and says "Jedediah, I've been thinking. The three statue brokers, Crisarius Three-Legs, Fenitor Stone-Hands and Godric the Wise, seem only too keen to bring some fresh players into their game. They shuffle around the table to make space for Jacky and Grim. Crisarius gives Jacky a quick nod of acknowledgement, whilst Godric deals the cards.

"So, are you lot heading back into the Halls tomorrow?" inquires Fenitor. "Remember, if you want the best price for any statues you find, make sure you come to me first. You’ll be wanting a professional appraisal from the Wisdom Factor, rather than wasting time with these two charlatans."

"Just shut up and play, Stone-Hands," snaps Godric. Crisarius gives Fenitor a dirty look before picking up and studying his cards.

"They’re still around. Headed back to the Halls yesterday. Going by the name of 'Debellaton’s Darlings' now. The creepy-looking one with the hunched back, Yvette, seems to be their leader."

You will know that Debellaton is one of "The Ten", the current Archontean pantheon of major deities (as opposed to "The Twelve", which are the older, largely forgotten gods). Deballaton is the god of death, might, order through might, and sacrifice.

Meanwhile, Jacky chats with Fenitor the broker as they play cards …

If you don’t fancy standing up to him, your only choices are to pay up or find another route into the Halls. The place is so big that the pyramid surely can’t be the only entrance."

Jacky and Grim - to see how successful, or otherwise, you are when playing cards with the statue brokers, please can you each roll:

(An ability score of your choice: Intelligence, Charisma or Dexterity) minus (3d6).

The result is the number of gold pieces you win (if positive) or lose (if negative).

If you pick Intelligence, you’re relying on your powers of reasoning and deduction. If you select Charisma, you’re using your skills of bluff and subtle persuasion. If you go with Dexterity, there’s some sort of sleight of hand going on (which some might call cheating!).

If you pick Dexterity and end up with a negative result, you're caught red-handed and will lose some respect and goodwill with the brokers.

You leave the warm embrace of The Broken Head and step out into another cool, grey, rainy Lucrios day. The 30-minute hike from the inn to the summit of the pyramid gets your blood pumping, and you find yourself standing before the exquisite 20-foot-tall statue of Thoth contemplating your descent back into darkness.

Here’s a reminder of the description of the top of the pyramid from an earlier post, and a link to that post, which includes a picture.
Quote:
You ascend the marble steps to the 30’ x 30’ platform at the top of the pyramid, the floor of which is sheathed in white marble. A dark grey granite canopy rises 30’ above the platform to accommodate the enormous statue of Thoth. Purple porphyry columns support the canopy. Crouching at the foot of each column is a heavily pitted 4’-tall statue of a crouching baboon, with its mouth slightly open as if barking.

The 20’-tall statue of Thoth represents the epitome of the sculptor’s trade. Carved out of a solid block of porphyry, and topped with a white marble ibis head, the statue is truly awe-inspiring. Two grapefruit-sized lumps of shaped jade serve as eyes. The god’s arms rest flat at his side.

Directly in front of the statue of Thoth is a 10’ x 5’ section of pavement that is obviously distinct from the rest of the platform.
Please update your marching order to include Eric and Hector.

Are you leaving Billie at the summit of the pyramid again? Or, perhaps, back at the Broken Head?

Zach watches with increasing impatience as Ellagel fidgets with the imposing statue. Lady Epidermis, is everything all right? he calls from his position in the van.
Nov 14, 2025 11:00 am
"Zacharias Polipulis could help, perhaps. But he has grown oh so despondent, since he gained some wrinkles," she stated jokingly, a tone of false seriousness making clear this was all spoken in jest.

Her tone then switched abruptly, all suggestion of false seriousness gone: "All mortal things perish in time, Archontean swordmaster. But no greatness has come from waiting for others to open the way."

She then, switched back to a playful tone, concluding, "so get here and help me with these arms, you are so much taller!"

Ella was glad for the additional arms. She looked at the henchmen, and stated "Get ready to see something amazing boys, something to tell your grandkids!" She emphasized her words by pointing emphatically at the statue as the second arm got set into position and, with a swooping motion to the floor, she added "ta daaa!"
Nov 16, 2025 9:03 pm
Grim watches warily. Giddy in dwarven anticipation!
Nov 17, 2025 4:12 pm
To keep things moving, I’ll assume that you position the statue’s arms so that Thoth is, as Testlum puts it, in a zombie pose …

As the arms lock into place in their new position, the distinct section of floor before the statue grinds slowly to the west to reveal the familiar opening. Hector lights his lantern, and you begin your descent of the various long stairways.

Half an hour later, the stairs finally debouch into the large chamber with the central statue of Thoth.

A reminder of the description from your previous visit …
Quote:
The room is dominated by a massive 15’ tall statue of ibis-headed Thoth at its centre. The perfectly proportioned and lifelike human body stands on a granite pedestal (3’ tall) and is carved of black onyx. In classic Egyptian fashion, Thoth’s right foot is advancing slightly, whilst his arms hang at his side. Thoth’s ibis head is made of white marble, although the eye sockets are empty. At the foot of the statue is a large stone chest that is part of the pedestal.

The plaster on the room’s walls has been badly damaged, but the decorated ceiling plaster, 30’ above you, appears largely intact. However, there’s insufficient light to pick out any details; the ceiling is too high.

A substantial amount of debris - wrecked furniture, destroyed armour and equipment, bits of bone and leather - has accumulated in the corners of the chamber. There is dust everywhere, although clear paths lead from the stairs to archways in the eastern, southern and western walls, and to a door in the northwest corner of the room. There are also other exits that don’t appear to be heavily trafficked. No dust is found around the central statue.
See also Jacky’s map.

As you pause to orient yourselves after the confines of the stairway, a cheery voice calls out from a passageway to your left.

"Oi! Oi! Look who it isn’t! The slayers of Dalton Erdell no less! Always happy to see some repeat customers. Now, who should I make the license out to?"

The owner of the voice is, of course, your old "friend" Roskelly Winterleaf, as he and his halfling entourage saunter into the chamber.

In addition to Roskelly, there are five other halflings. They are wearing studded leather armour and carrying spears and shields.

"Come now," chuckles Roskelly, "We’re talking about a legal document here. As Dalton’s Darlings no longer exist, for reasons that you well understand, the previous licence is clearly invalid. Even the remaining Darlings had to purchase a new licence for their "Debellaton’s Darlings" moniker. So that’ll be 25 gold for the licence, and a 10 gold fee for your current sortie. As a gesture of good faith, I’ll overlook the 10 gold you so dishonestly avoided last time."

You see his countenance harden a little, the initial cheeriness becoming more forced. He doesn't seem in any way intimidated by Thrud's posturing.

"No dishonesty involved then, or now. We were in the service of the late Dalton, who should have treated his partners better, and paid with his life for his mistake. I pray no other lose their lives for equally egregious misjudgment of the situation they find themselves in," the small-framed elf stated in a level tone, the thinly-veiled threat hanging in the air between the two groups.

"We will at best agree to a nominal fee for the editing of our current license. Perhaps 15 gold for the rectification of the license — a mere change of name — and our expedition fee for the day. It is indeed a purely formal matter: Dalton’s darling have changed their leadership, and with it, their denomination. The impudent curs who served Dalton were dismissed from our employ, and it is just and appropriate that they be forced to pay a new licence in full. We, on the other hand, have already paid in full, the change in leadership having no effect over the validity of our licence. It would take an ignorant ruffian to misunderstand this most obvious application of sound principles of Archontean jurisprudence!"

Zach's eyes glaze over slightly as the elf lets forth a torrent of what sounds like legal invective. denomination, jurisprudence, egregious? Lady Elminster may be more dangerous than even bullywugs! he thinks with a shudder. Zach lets his pack slip to the ground and assumes a loose, but ready posture. He will not draw first, but he will stand last, he thinks. He is willing to see if Ellagel can charm her way out of this issue, and will go along with whatever she decides. If it were up to him, though, there would be much feasting for Gog tonight. Does Gog like his halfling roasted or braised?
Nov 20, 2025 12:51 am
Thrud listens to Ellagel's big words and understands almost none of them. But he hears Grim's tone and sees him grip his hammer, and prepares himself for battle should things go badly.

"Friends say price fair. Take it." he growls in a low voice.
Nov 20, 2025 4:21 pm
Roskelly screws up his face in concentration as he attempts to follow Ella’s legalese. When the elf finally finishes her monologue, he takes a deep breath before continuing in a slow, patient, slightly patronising tone, as if explaining something to a small child or an idiot.

"Let me try again, as you’re misunderstanding the simplest of principles. Each licence grants a party access to the Halls through this entrance. You have a licence made out to "Dalton’s Darlings". Now, if you are telling me that you have assumed that name for your party, with all the baggage and liabilities that come with it, then I guess you have me on a technicality. In that case, all that is due today is your ten gold sortie fee. If, on the other hand, you wish to adventure under any other banner, then you will need a new licence. Or, of course, you are free to return up the stairs and find another way in. This is an entry fee, not a shakedown."

He continues, "I really do think you are underestimating the value of the licence. Mr Plumthorn, at his own considerable time and expense, and with nothing but a charitable purpose, has secured this entrance so that adventurers such as your good selves have easy access to the Halls. Imagine if this area was riddled with goblins, or beastmen, or Set cultists, or worse!"

"I really do hope we’re not going to have a problem here. Twenty-five gold is exceptional value, and you’re worth far more to Mr Plumthorn alive than dead."

You can’t help but notice that, despite being outnumbered by much taller opponents (well, mostly), the halflings seem remarkably confident and secure in their position.

Jacky sighs. "Fine. Catch." He pulls out a pouch (filled with fish hooks and other miscellany) and tosses it toward Roskelly. At the same time, while the other halflings' attention is hopefully on the pouch, he hurls his flask of oil at Roskelly's feet.

Throwing a flask (AC hit) - (20-1d20)

- (6) + 20 = 14

That will be a miss.

Strangely, OSRIC doesn's seem to have any rules for grenade-like missiles, so we'll follow those in the 1E Dungeon Masters Guide.

Jacky - please can you roll a d6, a d8 and a d20 (for the oil flask's distance, direction and whether it breaks respectively).
Nov 22, 2025 1:05 pm
OOC:
You got it.

Rolls

Where does the oil go? - (1d6, 1d8, 1d20)

1d6 : (3) = 3

1d8 : (6) = 6

1d20 : (6) = 6

Nov 22, 2025 2:41 pm
Jacky’s flask of oil misses to the left (Jacky’s left). The flask shatters, creating a 3’ wide pool on the floor of the chamber.

OK, let’s move into combat rounds. There’s no surprise, so please declare spells and general actions - no need to roll anything yet.

Nov 24, 2025 3:49 pm
To keep things moving, let's assume Thrud will also join the fray.

Jacky - as you got the party into this mess, do you want to roll for initiative? Remember, in OSRIC, the result of the d6 initiative die is the segment in which your opposition acts.

... so that the halfling(s) will be caught between Zach and the pool of flaming oil.

Hah - tied! So everyone acts simultaneously, just to add to the chaos!

OK, you may go ahead and take your actions. I recommend that you refresh yourselves on the combat actions in OSRIC (pages 126-8 in my version), particularly the difference between "charging" and "closing" into combat for those planning to melee.

Also, for those engaging in melee, please clarify whether you will engage Roskelly (AC 5) or one of his foot soldiers (AC 6).

Ella's Sleep spell will be cast in segment 5, after everyone else has acted, assuming she isn't interrupted.
Nov 24, 2025 9:24 pm
Ella continued intoning the runes of power!
OOC:
I might be confusing Ad&d 1st ed with OSRIC rules but I’m not sure I understand how actions are going to transpire here. Am I to understand that all actions of all characters are going to start and finish within segment 4, whereas the sleep spell being cast will only take effect in segment 5?

In my recollection of how initiative ties work in ad&d, all actions were initiated simultaneously, but did not all finish at the same time: in melee your dexterous rogue wielding his dagger (speed factor 2) would act before the hulking warrior swinging his two handed-sword (speed factor 10), even though blows on both side would land even if said rogue’s attack had slain the warrior.

More importantly in the present case, if a spell-caster could take out a number of foes with a spell, you had to consider whether the melee attackers could get to the spell-caster and attack him before the spell went off. But movement, and swinging weapons consumed time too. For instance, my chainmail clad character with a 9" base movement could move at most 9feet per segment (18 ft if charging), so that the distance separating the melee types from the spell-casters and archers bought the latter some time to act…

Whatever you rule is fine with me Burbage, but I’d like to understand the underlying reasoning so I can plan my actions accordingly in the future, assuming there will be one for Ella… :-P

OOC:
I stated above that I was closing into combat. I will target Roskelly. You are the DM, so you decide EVERYTHING, but the OSRIC rules (2.2) do say say on pg. 127 that "When faced with more than one opponent, it is not possible to pick which opponent will be the one receiving the attack; in the rapid give and take of melee, any one of the opponents might be the one to let down his guard for a moment.
When a character is in melee with multiple opponents, the target of an attack roll must be determined randomly, but note that characters or creatures with multiple attacks that are part of the same routine (such as a bear with a claw/claw/bite attack or a character wielding a sword and dagger) must make all attacks against the same opponent unless otherwise specified in the relevant monster’s entry.
"

Also subject completely to your discretion, Zach has bastard sword double specialization, which means he gets multiple attacks, now 3/2 (unless he is fighting creatures of < 1 HD, in which case he gets one attack per fighter level or 2/1) so every odd round he attacks twice, which, according to the rules on p. 14, means he attacks BEFORE everyone and AFTER everyone on odd rounds and in his initiative slot on even round.

Of course, as DM, if you tell me Zach attacks last in every round, that is what will happen :D :D

So, all else equal, Zach intends to close with Roskelly and wallop him as often as he can with the sharp edge of his big, pointy, metal stick.

Let’s do this!

Round 1, Segment 3

Thrud charges into combat!

Please roll Thrud’s to-hit and damage. He gets +2 to-hit from charging. Also, please roll a d4 to see who he hits. 1 = Roskelly, 2-4 = halfling fighter (only 3 of the halfling fighters will be within 10’ of Thrud).

Jacky shoots!

He’s already rolled, so let’s see who he hits by rolling a d7. 1 = Thrud, 2 = Roskelly, 3-7 = halfling fighter.
