A Matter of Faith - part II

Jul 26, 2025 11:27 am
16th of Ambyrmont (first month of Autumn), Gromdain

The wheels of the covered carriage groaned as they struggled through the mud. The rain was growing steadily worse, soaking your clothes, and those of the rider on top of the carriage. Automn has finally arrived in Karameikos, and grey skies, sharp winds, and bad roads was the best you can hope for, until the weather will turn even worse once Winter arrives.

The old Patriarch takes refuge inside the carriage throughout the entire trip. He is an old man, and walking the entire distance to the last civilized settlement on the edge of the realm was behind his power, even if the weather was fine. Besides, sitting inside the carriage allowed him to travel incognito, with only a handful of loyal guards riding inside with him. He insisted on avoiding any attention, in fact. Any public movement would risk drawing more zealots from Kelvin, or even just multitude of devotees who would insist on traveling with him, which would make everything more complicated.

A few days into the journey, not long after passing the outskirts of Kelvin, you are forced to halt. The Duke’s road is blocked by several men in wet cloaks and worn leathers. They are all busy dragging bloated, limp bodies of goblins from the road. Dozens and dozens of them, the corpses turning the already muddy road into a grisly barricade.

What do you do?
Jul 26, 2025 9:11 pm
Seeing the men in the road, Boudica steps forward and raises a hand to greet them. She says, "Greetings. We are simple travelers. May I ask what has occurred here?"

He watches for reactions and considers his sleep spell. He doesn't consider his roguish abilities to side sneak up on them to be up to snuff.

Miyana lifts her bow, but does not yet draw.
Jul 27, 2025 1:19 pm
The men looked up at you, water streaming from their hoods and cloaks. One of them, a broad-shouldered Traladran with a thick beard, approached, giving Miyana a wary eye when he sees her drawing her bow

"Goblins. They’ve been getting bolder and bolder. Seen all up and down the Duke’s Road lately. This lot probably thought they could raid the farms near Kelvin" he grunted, raising his voice over the raging rainstorm "Kelvin's men cut them down quick enough. They rode back into town like proud heroes, and left us to clean up the mess"

Another man muttered something under his breath as he rolled a goblin limb off the road.

"It’s gonna take us a bit to clear the path… unless you’re willing to lend a hand."
Jul 27, 2025 3:38 pm
Boudica nods and heads their way to assist. As she does so, she chats with the men about these goblin raids. From where are they originating, etc?

"They’re coming out of the woods in droves" The Traladaran man grunted as you carry another bloated goblin corpse into the ditch by the road "Never seen anything like this. The Duke's Road is no longer safe, not until they deal with all of 'em"

The crows had already begun to gather, on nearby branches or stones. Some of them were already bold enough to peck at the dead bodies, even with you nearby

"Best thing would have been to burn the lot" he looks at the crows and shakes his head "but there's no chance of it with this rain. They'll rot here, and every beast in the forest will come sniffing for a bite. That would be more trouble for travelers if we got roving packs of wolves down here..."
Jul 28, 2025 10:39 pm
Boudica asks, "Does anyone know why they are moving south and attacking in such numbers? Is something pushing them out of their traditional territories to the north? Do they have a new, more aggressive leader?"

"No idea" he shakes his head "Nasty little buggers, that’s what they are. Always looking for trouble." The other men continue hauling the goblins as you talk "Heard they’ve been spotted up near Threshold too, so if anything, they’re moving west to east. Whatever’s stirring them up… it’s happening all over"

He looks at your closed carriage behind you, and finishes with a warning: "Anyways; best keep your eyes open. Don't camp out at night if you can help it; the Duke's road isn't as safe as it used to be"

Jul 29, 2025 4:32 am
She helps them finish their work then informs the Patriarch, noting that the trip may be more dangerous than they had anticipated. She reassured him, however, that they would do their best to protect him!
Jul 30, 2025 4:30 am
The next leg of your journey is nothing short of miserable.

The land north of Kelvin is even more sparsely populated. The tiny farms and roadside inns of southern Karaemeikos are now a distant memory, replaced by open fields surrounded by wild forests. The Duke’s road continues forward, cutting through the wilderness, but there is little life or civilization along it. The few scattered hamlets have dwindled, or are too far off the road to bother seeking them out. There is no warm inn and a cozy bed waiting for you at the end of the day.

The rain that hasn’t stopped since you left Specularum has only grown worse. Even the best of your cloaks are heavy and useless now. Your bedrolls are soggy, you are completely soaked, and there is no way to light a fire when there is no shelter or dry wood to be found

The Patriach rides in the covered carriage drawn by two exhausted horses, which offers him some protection from the elements, but its cramped and barely large enough for him and his two faithful retainers. Even he, wrapped in thick robes and sheltered from the rain, looks pale and weary. He offers you a prayer for your health each night, and you suspect that it is only due to divine intervention that none of you has succumbed to pneumonia by now, or worse.

This day has been just as bad as the last couple, but at least brightened by the knowledge that you can’t be more than a day travel from a roadside inn, where you might catch your breath for a while.

You pull off the road to make camp as best you can in a small clearing beside a rain-swollen stream. The ground is soaked, and even setting up a tent in the strong wind would still mean your bedrolls will end up in the mud.

What are your sleeping arrangements?

And more importantly, do you set up a watch, and who takes which one?
Jul 30, 2025 4:52 am
Miyna, not needing to replenish spells, offers to take a mid-watch.
Jul 30, 2025 9:16 am
Will, having been rather silent heretofore, wrings his wet cloak once again, and says, I can take the first watch, or whichever is best for those preparing spells. I probably won’t skeletons much tonight any ol’ way!

Although setting up a fire is difficult, Barns informs that he by chance owns a continuous light source. Appears he has a small rock that has uncover from his clay covering and it radiates out light (30' radius) immediately. Barns will take the last shift if possible. You sit by the dim magical light Barns conjured up, all cold and wet, trying to stay alert through the miserable night. Then you hear it. Footsteps, just outside the edge of the light. Something is sniffing, like a large animal, but not quite. You can't see beyond the glare of the light, and whatever is out there is getting closer

The troll is gone, and the rest of the journey passed without further danger, though not without hardship. By the time you reach Threshold you are all cold, soaked, and tired. The guards at the gate eye all of you with suspicion, especially those of you carrying weapons. They are all very jumpy, and warn you that Baron Theodorou enacted a curfew starting at sundown, and that no one is allowed on the streets after dark, without exception.

Once they wave you through the approach the closed carriage carefully, knocking on the sliding door so they could see who is riding inside.

What do you do?
Aug 2, 2025 1:04 pm
As they arrive at the gate, and Boudica can see that there are guards, she makes sure to check in with the Patriarch, letting him know they approach, and that there are guards who will likely demand to see the inside of the carriage. She would ask him how he would like us to approach. Announce him? Keep his rival his hush for now? Ask to see the local Thyatian religious people immediately? Etc

"Thank you, daughter" the journey has taken it's toll on the old man. He is even paler than usual, and is sitting under a heavy blanket to try to warm himself from the biting cold "You have done more than enough for me already. Brother Johan will now show us the rest of the way to Bishop Theodorou" he stops for a moment, before saying farewell, ending with a very uncharacteristic blessing for the holy father of the Church: "May the Three guide your path"

There is a small commotion when the guards finally peek into the carriage, with the captain of the guard immediately dispatching runners to the Baron's adobe, and to the church, but they dare not delay the holy Father. His carriage is soon allowed to continue on its path to the Baron, leaving you alone in the rain.

The Silver Dragon Inn looks deserted. The usual scent of beer and grilled pork is gone, replaced only by a faint smell of damp wood and the sound of rain tapping on the roof. Only a handful of people sit among the long tables, one of them being Hunter. The big redheaded warrior with the thick beard looks miserable as he lifts a spoon from his bowl of porridge, grimacing before forcing himself to eat it. Thoughts of hot stew and a brew fill his thoughts and dry out a bit. Perhaps even a bath and room. He has hopes that the service here matches the name.

Hopeful him informs the others, "Let's get a table and a pitcher." as he saunters over to empty table to commandeer with hopes of a server soon to arrive as well before he has to yell to get one. He wants service and has coin. He is a bit put off that he received no compensation for service that he has render as his sum of coin could use help.

If his eyes catch those of the hunter than he will return a nod back. That or he mostly ignores the big redheaded warrior as he appears to be in some misery. Barns is rather thinking more of himself.

The innkeeper takes a step back when Will draws his knife, but once he realizes his intention he relaxes somewhat, and shakes his head "Don't bother. Curfew's about to start. No one is coming, not even for roasted boar. And it's not like the Traladarans have been lining up to come here anyhow, as of late. If things keep going like this, I’ll have to close the place down for good"

The innkeeper is a Thyatian, and is obviously seens as 'guilty by association', even though he had nothing to do with the riots, or the (supposedly) heinous acts of the priest. But such is life.

It takes Boudica a long while to track Moryana down. It is late in the afternoon and people are already hurrying inside before the curfew starts. That, and the pouring rain, means there is barely anyone outside to give her directions. She finally manages to find someone who knows where she is staying (luckily for her, Threshold is pretty small, and most everyone knows everyone). A few minutes later she finds herself in front of a door to a shabby Traladaran house.

He doesn't seem to let the matter take much of his current attention. You can guess it would take a bit to make him want to go back out into the rain. Especially as this place has a curfew soon.

Although his skills to move in the night are much better than most, he has no thoughts for such. There is no need to face the rain. He is tired of the march here. Makes him think about a horse but his coin is much too close to gone for such. Still, he will gladly spend it for a hot meal.

Some self-comfort appeals more and the slowness of the innkeeper to provide. He removes his soak cloak and such to let it and him dry out some. You can easily see that he doesn't wear any armor but has a longsword and other weapons to say he is still ready for action. If not for the weapons he could easily be a local person with nothing to mark him otherwise, but the party knows he is a spell caster.

Abruptly he calls to the innkeeper, "Some soup and bread for the misses too. Some butter if you have it." and to Will, "Will you not have some brew for the night?"

Is there anything else I can get you? Would you be staying the night?"
Aug 5, 2025 5:00 am
Boudica hugs Moryana, received that she is OK. She replies, " have traveled far, to the city of Kelvin, and even on to the capital city of Specularum. Now I have returned, with the others, as well as with a Thyatian religious authority, in hopes to calm the strife that haas beset Threshold.". Then, turning to include the Traladaran who has been taking care of Moryana, she continues, saying, "I have brought the Patriarch of the Thyatian Church himself to calm the religious zealots of the Crystal Order. Can you please tell me what has transpired here while I have been away? What happened to that young priest who was accused of this awful things? Has anything else like that occurred?"
Aug 5, 2025 10:46 am
Boudica

Moryana’s shoulders slumped "The Baron hanged the young priest" her voice trembled, as if she was about to cry "I couldn't bare to watch it. I told everyone who would listen that he was innocent, but no one believed me. Maybe they didn't want to... " she shook her head "It was quite for a couple of days after that, but then those people arrived from Kelvin, and they stirred up trouble again" she sighed "....some of them are as awful as Mother"
Aug 5, 2025 2:12 pm
Boudica's face falls at the news that the young priest was hanged. We should not have left... she thinks. She adds that mistake to the pile she seems to be amassing, First she disappoints the Three by failing their test, then she allows an innocent young man to die. My penance will needs be great indeed, she thinks.

She hugs Moryana when she becomes upset and says, "We have returned, and we bring with us the man who presides as authority over those zealots who arrived and terrorize the town. He is kind and good and should set them straight. I am... I am dearly sorry for what happened to that poor young man, as well as what happened to the boy they accused him of killing. The killer, whoever they be, still lives, and that is my main concern now. Take care of yourself, Moryana, and know that I am here and shall not leave until this town is safe." She turns to the older Traladaran and says, "Thank you for taking care of Moryana. Is there anything you need?"
Aug 5, 2025 3:37 pm
Boudica

"Oh! Then… then things will get better now , won’t they?" the still rather naive Moryana wholeheartedly believes Boudica when she said someone will now 'set everyone straight' "The mice told me the man who killed the child looked exactly like the young priest. He smelled differently, though. The Sheriff told me 'mice aren't reliable witnesses', but now that you're here, maybe you can find the real killer" she looks upon her with hopeful eyes.

The older Traladaran woman doesn't require anything from Boudica. After you said your goodbyes, she calls Morayana back into the house, so she can get started on dinner.

Thea's uncle tenses up when the door to the inn swings open and a woman walks in from the rain. She is clad in white garments with a cowl drawn low over her head, but once she pushes it back, you see her for what she truly is; a radiant elven maiden, with golden hair and pale skin. She seems almost luminous, as if her very presence casts the room in a silvery glow.

She looks around the tables, and once she spots you, she approaches, Jorgen right on her heels - just in case

"Greeting, adventurers" her words are heavily accented "Would you mind if I join you?"

https://i.pinimg.com/736x/3c/01/91/3c0191fa0132070fc71b256d7c9168a2.jpg Seeing that Will & Miyana and our kind innkeeper has place lots of bowls and mugs of brew for dinning, Barns is happy. Eating a hot meal always does that for him as well as drying out. He thinks butter would have been king.

Purchasing a room is soon to be on Barns agenda. Be nice to shed these wet clothes and let them dry out properly. He so much needs to learn a spell for doing that. Would save so much time. And appears it is also on other's thoughts.

Seeing that enjoyment of just a meal isn't possible. Chatter rises here from hunter inquiries. Somehow, he just knew it wouldn't wait till morning and if he is rather fortunate it will interfere with him receiving a good night's sleep. He somehow figures the matter will become worse when a soaking wet Boudica arrives if she isn't accosted for being past curfew.

Barns asks Miyana, "Being late here, would not such matter wait till daybreak. Hopefully the storm will pass. And the hot soup is fine right now."
Aug 5, 2025 8:22 pm
Boudica returns to the inn and greets her fellows, as well as Thea, Jorgen, Hunter, and the innkeeper. She also nods a greeting to the elf, whom she does not recognize. To her friends, she says, "Moryana is doing well. The young priest, however, was hanged, a few days before the Crystal Order arrived. According to my friend, the mice saw the killer. He looked like the young priest but it was not him...the killer smelled wrong, she claimed. Unfortunately the sheriff ignored her. So the real killer is still at large."
OOC:
Boudica does not explicitly state that Moryana has some witchy powers; she does not know how such news would be taken by the locals, especially in the current climate. She does not hide her words, however, allowing the elven woman to overhear.
Boudica then turns to the elf and says, "Well met, friend. I am Boudica, priestess of the Old Faith."
Aug 5, 2025 9:12 pm
"Miyana Dradov," Miyana replies by way of introduction. Turning to Barns, she says, "It will have to wait until daybreak, I guess. With the curfew, I doubt we'll be going out again tonight." On Boudica's return with the news, she sighs heavily. "Boudica, would you like to share a room with me? I do not take this news lightly. We should not have left, and now an innocent has suffered. In the morn, I would speak with the patriarch. I hope, for their sakes, that he was given a fair trial, though I doubt it."

Barns says to the helpful innkeeper, "A room for the night would be a blessing." Barns fathoms that he has sufficient coin for meal and a room at a minimum. He glances over to Will, "Sharing a room?"
Barns notes the new incomer and give an affirming nod to sit at our table, "Barns. More soup and brew will have to be ordered. And who do we have the pleasures of being siting with?" Barns is easy about making new friends. He wonders what the cat dragged in. He thinks, "This getting to be an interesting evening."
It appears something that arriving Boudica has mentioned caught Barns's simple interest, "I believe pursuit of this killer to be rather important tomorrow." as he enjoys the last of his soup. He thinks, "Wizard Edmund Bryson may have been right. Nosferatu exist. Hopefully those two new spells may be useful. He will need study time."

"And I am Siriliavendretharionevanyael" elves were never known for brevity, but the long name rolls over her tongue with ease. She seems unsure of herself at first, as she realizes she is interrupting your dinner conversation. Finally, her need urges her to speak: "I was sent by my people to retrieve a powerful artifact stolen from us by a miscreant sorcerer. I've been looking for him this last moon, but have found no trace of him. I hoped a group of travelers such as yourself might have heard some word of him"
Aug 6, 2025 4:44 am
Boudica looks concerned and asks, "I will help if I can. What is the artifact? And who is this sorcerer?"

Sirilia
"He goes by the name of Vayek; a wandering sorcerer who abused my father’s hospitality, then fled our grove under cover of darkness after stealing from us a relic of great power. The horn of a ram, that turns the breath of your mouth into a gale so powerful it levels everything in its path" she shakes her head, a lock of golden hair tumbling down the side of her cheek "I fear what a man like him could do with it. It must be returned to safekeeping, as soon as possible"
Aug 6, 2025 5:04 am
Alarmed, Boudica says, "We met this man! He tried to sell us magical artifacts but we saw he was illegitimate. I can tell you exactly where and when we saw him, though it as been some time. He tried to sell us a magic horn, and he offered to get something he called living wood, as well. I will help you when I can."
Aug 6, 2025 3:40 pm
Miyana raises a curious eyebrow. "So it's true, then. There is such a device. He claimed that his horn could collapse buildings, but I believed none of it."

If he already sold it, there is no telling who might possess it now, or what they might do with it" she draws a deep breath, as she considers it "Where have you seen him last? Do you think there is still a chance I might find him there?"

Sirilia tries the best she can to follow your explanations, but they are hardly precise, plus, it has been many weeks since you've seen the sorcerer. But it is the best lead, or rather, the only lead she has right now "I guess I should be going then" she mutters as she rises up again from the table, just as the innkeeper arrives with another bowl of soup for her "I doubt he is still out there in the pouring rain, but perhaps I could still fine some trace of him" she gives you all a gracious nod "Thank you for your help"
Aug 7, 2025 7:40 pm
Boudica looks to her friends and asks, "So, what now? The Patriarch will hopefully reign in the Thyatian zealots and the town can return to normal, but there’s still a murderer out there… Someone who can change their appearance. Wait…. " she pauses and then looks at the elven woman preparing to leave.

She speaks up and says, "Excuse me, before you go. I’d like to ask a sensitive question. Please know we mean no offense, but… do you know an elven woman named Velassilirilwyn? You see, someone murdered an innocent child and framed a Thyatian priest. And now everyone here is suffering because of it, and the priest who was framed was recently hung. Well, we met Velassilirilwyn and she made it clear that she wanted Thyatians and Traladarans — all humans — to suffer as a punishment for crimes against nature, in her words. I know she can change her shape into an animal… Could she change her shape to resemble a human man? Could she have framed the priest, in order to punish the people of Threshold? Please… an innocent child is dead and many more could be soon if we don’t find that murderer."

Sirilia had already turned from the table, but she stopped mid-step when Boudica called out to her, and slowly turned back

"I do not know this… Velassilirilwyn," she sounds...anxious at your description of the elf, but she shakes her head when you suggest it might have been her who framed the young priest "no elf I know can take the form of a human. Not even the visage of a specific animal" her voice then drops lower "I have heard tales, very old tales, of fey 'who walk between shapes'. That can take the form of anyone they lay their eyes on. Malicious beings who live only to sow discord, enmity… and death." She pauses, before adding quietly "If such a creature walks your streets, your danger is far greater than you imagine."
OOC:
@WanderOne - Barns is an educated Wizard. Even a 'polymorph self' - a 4th-level spell!, doesn't allow one to take the form of a specific creature. Maybe an exceedingly powerful wizard managed to invent a more powerful spell that does, but it is highly unlikely. Sirilia is likely saying the truth when she says no elf she knows possesses such power.

Boudica thanks Sirilia for her reply and looks to her companions. "More fey trouble? I wonder if we angered them with the hags?"
Aug 8, 2025 1:02 pm
The hags got their just desserts. If they want more, I say bring it on.
As far as a murderer on the loose, I’ll do what I can to help. But as I stated before, I won’t put myself out to clear an accused child killing priest, without due cause and reasonable evidence to counter.
Aug 8, 2025 5:30 pm
Boudica replies, "You think I want to rush to defend the Thyatian Church? Hardly. But I got the sense that was amiss when we spoke to the priest, and I believe Moryana's mice that thought the killer may have looked like the priest, but smelled wrong. I dunno. It doesn't set well with me. And to be clear, I don't much care about the priest; but if there is a chance that a child murderer is still free, well... I can't let that stand."

"I just think we should be on the lookout for any other evidence is all. And if I don't have anything more pressing, I might poke round a bit about it, though I don't really know how I'd do that. Maybe consider motive? Who benefits by the murder? Hmm."
Aug 8, 2025 11:22 pm
Miyana takes a drink. "I don't recall, was the accused Thyatian or Traladaran?"
Aug 9, 2025 6:06 am
Boudica replied, "A Thyatian priest."

"That creature does, supposedly" Thea shrugs when Boudica asks who benefited from framing the priest "Assuming it exist" she didn't know who Moryana was, or her 'mice', but the simplest explanation sounded the most plausible. The priest did it.
Aug 9, 2025 10:56 pm
"The Traladarans," Miyana answers Boudica. "One less Thyatian. But there is something to be said for Thea's opinion," she says, guessing what the young woman was thinking. "A sage once said that all things considered equal, the simplest explanation is often the correct one." But Miyana knew that Moryana could speak with animals, and assumed that the mice had no reason to lie (and quite frankly, she doubted that Moryana was capable of telling a lie). She strained her brain to think of a creature she knew of that could duplicate a specific person so perfectly.

I have my suspicions, but I don't know that Miyana would know of it. I'm trying to avoid being too meta, here.

William Winter checks into his room at ye ole inn. Once inside, he closes the door behind him, and locks it.
He kneels at his bed, and closes emerald eyes tight. I am Halav, he utters quietly. More than once. Affirming truth, and putting the words deeply into his spirit.

He lays the two-handed sword on the bed, and gazes down at it. He (Sighs), props the sword on the side of his bed opposite the door, and prepares to go to sleep.

With a dagger by his side.

"I’ve never known an elf to lie. Maybe we should ask the local Magician Guildmaster if he has heard of this ‘walker between the shapes’ she mentioned."

Pulling a clean blouse over her head, she finally turned to face you. "What she said was pretty ominous. I don’t think I could sleep soundly knowing there’s a shape-shifting murderer on the loose."

Thea smiles thinly when Boudica acknowledges her idea. She picks up her hairbrush and starts working her hair as she asks the next question on her mind:
"Who is this Moryana you spoke of? You said she could talk with mice??"
Aug 11, 2025 10:30 pm
Realizing she had not explained, she replies, "Moryana is a girl we saved from some hags in the forest. They were raising her and, eventually, they planned to transform her into one of their kind. We destroyed the hags and brought her back here and set her up with a Traladaran family. She needs to learn what it means to live among humans, having been raised by fey."

She looks to Miyana and adds, "it occurred to me that, perhaps, we did not fully kill one of the hag women and the murder of the child was her revenge upon us, trying to sow discord and strife among our people. And if there is another hag we do not know of, perhaps she is also responsible for some of the other travails we have encountered. Indeed, I might even suspect Moryana, but she was with us the entire time when the child was slain."

"If you suspect Moryana, then maybe she set us off on a wild goose chase. You said she has been raised by Hags, so she probably knew tales about the creature Sirila was talking about from before"
she sighed softly to herself "I never realized adventuring would be so...complicated. I thought it would be more me stabbing bad people with my sword...."
Aug 12, 2025 6:30 am
Boudica nods in agreement. She says, " indeed. Our first adventure was straightforward in just the way you mean, and I miss it. But we don’t get to decide the world that meets us when we walk out our door every morning. Our choice is what to do when we find it there, waiting for us."

You gather the next morning over another plain, and cold, breakfast. Will joined up with the rest of you, and his warning drew Thea's attention:

"what spirit?" She seems a bit cautious "And do you mean goblins? I remember someone from the archeological society telling me that the mythical Beastmen were nothing but goblins and hobgoblins... Maybe that is why we are seeing more attacks along he Duke's road?'
Aug 12, 2025 5:31 pm
Speaking of the ' archeological society' , the man who sits over a bowl of porridge at the corner of the room looks oddly familiar. He tries eating as fast as he can, while keeping his head low and his eyes on his bowl.

I dunno if you’ve ever heard of a messianic secret, Will replies to Thea.

Truth is, Thea, I am Halav. Or, he’s me. Both are true, I think. Anyway, I’ve been given a divine purpose. There are beast men gathering, and I need to gather forces together to face them, before it’s too late.

I’m sure it sounds outlandish, right? But, well…my friends and I also fought against evil witches who used magic against us, and are pondering the possibility of a man being framed by a doppelgänger. So there’s also all of that.

I dunno that I should include all that on the bulletin, though.

Boudica enters the room and looks over to see none other than Darius Guillroy! She alerts her companions to pay attention and approaches him. She stands on the far side of his table, arms crossed, and speak, her voice stern and commanding.

"Darius Guillroy! I spoke to the members of the Archaeological Society in Specularum and do you know what they told me? They told me that you are NOT a member! And when I described how you behaved when you hired us to help you find the tomb, they were appalled! You, sir, are nothing more than a liar and a grave robber, coming to Traladaran land to steal our historical artifacts under false pretenses, for your own profit! You scoundrel, I would strike you down were it not frowned upon by my Faith! How dare you show your face! Why are you here?"

Somehow, Thea managed to keep a straight face. She heard stories like this before. It was a common folk-illness, born from the old tales that the mythical King would return one day. Poor Will was hardly the first man in history claiming to be Halav...

She looked towards the others, expecting at least one of them to call this madness out. Surely there were trained professionals who could help him, and they certainly shouldn't be indulging him.

But Miyana and Boudica were already gone, off to talk with that stranger..

She suppressed a sigh, rolled her eyes faintly, then turned back to Will. She offered him a small, nervous smile, and then took a slight step back.

"what's 'Nosfeeatu'?"

The ever vigilant warrior was always interested in hearing about new threats to worry about. He looked at Barns with piercing gaze as he waited for him to answer.

Darius froze for a heartbeat, then slowly lifted his head, his lips curving into a charming smile.

"Good morning to you too."

He didn’t bother to deny or confirm a single accusation, knowing there was no point to it . "I’m merely here to eat breakfast," he went on "but if I recall correctly, you and your friends are the ones who walked away from that tomb with a rather beautiful sword, while I left with nothing. One might say you were the grave robbers, not me."

He shrugged lightly . "Still, I’m willing to forgive you for leaving me empty-handed." He gave a short nod at the empty bench in front of him "Care to sit? I’ve got another business venture we could discuss, if you’re interested."

"Bloody hell with all those 'Traladaran superstitions!!!' - each one of them is worse then the last! Shapeshifting murderers, undead that prey on the living, rabid werewolves in the woods...". Jorgen finally snaps. He could go on and on, but Barns got the drift of it "Great. So now I need to worry whether anyone I meet is secretly a blood-drinking monstrosity???
Aug 14, 2025 4:12 am
"'Gifted', of course.." Darius doesn't buy Miyana's story, probably because he would be trying to sell her the same one if she ever accused him of grave robbing.

"Anyways, I've been thinking a lot about Mistamere castle lately. You know, the old haunted ruins way up north? There had to be a reason they built it there, so far away from any major settlement. It got me thinking....maybe it was there to protect something valuable?'. He looks at both women, to check their reaction "so I did some research. I believe there is an old mine there, abondoned during the Traladaran Dark Age. If we could find it....I'll be rich beyond my wildest dreams!!!". He stops to correct himself. "We. I mean 'we'"
Aug 14, 2025 4:30 am
"So why do you need us? Couldn't you just drum up some accomplices who also want to be rich, and have a go at it yourselves?"
Aug 14, 2025 4:41 am
Boudica crosses her arms and looks sternly at Darius and answers Miyana's question, saying, 'He needs muscle. Isn't that right, Darius?"
Aug 14, 2025 4:49 am
"Well, yes" he confesses "Those hills are swarming with goblins, as far as I know. And who knows what lurks in that old abondoned mine. You couldn't possibly expect me to go there by myself, right?" he then changes his tone a bit, once he remembers something "- and you folks seem to love these little cockroaches. So maybe you can help broker a deal or something? Get them to bugger off somewhere else? Maybe buy them off with some trinkets? This way we could all profit!"

Boudica rolls her eyes and says, "Let me get this straight... The goblins are pressing southward and raiding the roads, the Thyatian Crystal Order is here trying to conduct an Inquisition, there may be a shape changing child murderer afoot, and you want us to go explore an old mine in a remote location because...'it's so remote, there must be something valuable there'...? Do I have that rightly?"
Aug 15, 2025 4:42 am
"When you put it like that..." Darius shrinks abit in his chair as Boudica makes him feel ashamed of himself, if only a little bit. "I mean, it's not like I can do anything about these issues. And I thought they apprehended and hanged the priest who killed the child. I'm just trying to make a living here...". He tries to make excuses for himself, but the scolding he got leads him to reconsider (some) of his life choices. Maybe. "What would you have me do?"
Aug 15, 2025 4:47 am
Boudica regards him for a moment and sighs. Then she says, "Darius, I know you to be smart and resourceful, albeit self-serving and amoral. So use those virtues to aid us! Tell me, you who have traveled and know the land, who hears rumors and has a nose for discovery -- why might the goblins be raiding so far south? What is pushing them to do so?"

Then, having an idea, she holds up a finger, and says, "And if you really want to help us, perhaps you can help us gather a flock of sheep to drive to the tomb we left behind, to offer to the tribe of goblins? We gain access to the tomb, you might gain something valuable there, and we can ask the goblins about the raids."
Aug 15, 2025 4:59 am
"I'm not completely amoral" he tries to excuse himself, before finally giving up and sighing to himself "alright, let me think. Goblins are cowardly wretches that wouldn't dare raid human settlement unless they knew they could get away with it. Or if they had no other choice. Stories I hear are of entire tribes moving east, not just sporadic raiding parties. So if I had to wager a guess, it would be that they can no longer eke out a living in their old stomping grounds. Maybe the Elves finally decided to clean house and drive them away from their forests. I dunno..." he shrugs again "That's the most plausible reason I can think of"
Aug 15, 2025 5:22 am

COuld I get a bit of help on geography? Relative to Threshold, in what direction are the elven forests? And where were the original goblin stomping grounds? And they are moving to the east... does that bring them into the human areas near Kelvin? And where, relative to all this, does Halav say the beast men are gathering?

Assuming we are in Mystara, the Known World, the elven empire of Alfheim is to the west of Threshold. Halav has been ambiguous on exactly where the beastmen are, pretty much stating that they are gathering in the wilds.

OK I've looked at the map. Here's my questions: Let's say we wanted to explore the area where the goblins are raiding from or perhaps where they are getting pushed out of. If we went to Mistamere, would that put us in that area? What about if we went back to the burial mound where we got the Halav sword? Or the area where the angry elf threatened the loggers? I'm tying to see if there is a spatial pattern, or what might be related to what. Or what!
