THE ISHENSA RIVER | HALVARDSEN'S VIGIL | EARLY NIGHTFALL
River‑spray turns to sleet, stone stands mute, every broken window feels like an eye waiting to blink.
Stubby watch‑towers stud the bends now, stone throats coughing smoke into the grey. At one narrow bend a rank of orcs swings a chain-boom across the channel and snarls for tribute. Wexley’s first offer, a cask of salted eel too ordinary to tempt, wins only rough laughter. The old gnome’s eyes crease: he beckons the leader close and produces a sealed clay jar marked with the red sigil of a Shadow quartermaster. Inside sloshes pitch‑black tar-spirit, a naval caulk coveted for winter repairs. Greed smothers suspicion; the guard waves them through still examining his tribute as the Netherthistle drifts on.

By dusk the current grows sluggish and the air brittle. Cloudbanks swallow the western glow, swapping sunset for early winter. Snow starts as whispered flakes, then thickens, white noise on dark water. At last, a ruined watch‑tower looms through the flurry: cracked stone, half‑collapsed roof, a lonely silhouette against swirling grey.

The barge noses into a half‑frozen eddy below the slope. Wexley grips each wrist in turn, words rasped soft enough that snow must lean close to hear. Thaelin offers a crooked smile and a swifter farewell; within moments they push off, lantern shuttered, purpose unspoken as the Netherthistle melts upriver into white shadow.

Now the wind owns the silence. You stand on the bottom of a hill, snow drifts beginning to form, necks craned toward the dark mouth of the tower—no light, no welcome, just a wall against the gathering storm.

Between you and the stones lies only rising snow, the stories this night chooses to tell and the ever-begging question:

Seelah bids farewell to Thaelin and Wexley. Hopeful they’ll meet again, if the mission goes at all well!

Gauntleted hand pulls her cloak tightly against the snowy cold. And as Seelah steps broadly into the snow with hard black boots, she says to her companions, We should move quickly to the tower. Before the snow overtakes us.

Petra had greeted her friends with obvious relief and scrupulous checks that none of them had been injured after their 'hounds and hares' game with the ice elemental.

Then she had spent the last leg of their journey by river going over any parts of Serah's precious herbalism lore she had questions on with the elder, and seeking any poems or songs she had to teach whether related to herbs or not.

It leaves the dwarrow wistful bidding their new friends farewell. "It was an honor sailing with you and your worthy barge. Sunrays warm you and shade protect you," she offers to Thaelin, Wexley, and Serah before disembarking.


She nods her agreement with Seelah but asks nervously, "Will the snow hide our tracks to our shelter, or more likely reveal them? Maybe we ought to drag something behind us to obscure them?"


She tries to find something suitable, a bit of cloth she can tie to the end of her walking stick and sweep behind them (while looping her 'bundle' over one arm), and attempts to cover her own walking tracks experimentally.

Varin gives both Wexley and Thaelin a firm pat on the back—no words at first, just a warrior’s gesture of respect. Then he grips each of them by the forearm in a rough handshake, eyes steady.

"Thanks," he mutters, voice low. "And good luck."

Without another word, he turns and leaps off the barge, landing with a soft thud on the cold, muddy bank. He adjusts the strap on his pack and starts walking toward the distant tower.

A sharp shiver runs through him as the wind cuts across the open field. He pulls his cloak tighter.
"Only shelter for miles," he mutters, at anyone within earshot. "If someone comes looking… this’ll be the first place they check."

His eyes scan the ground behind him, noting the scattered tracks from the group.
"No hiding our trail," he adds quietly, "but maybe we can hide how many of us there are."

As the old, crumbling tower comes into clearer view, Varin slows his pace and stops a good distance away. The structure looms silent and still—but too quiet for his liking.
"Might not be empty," he says, eyes narrowed. "Could be trouble inside."

He glances back toward Azote.
"Can you send out Tork? Let him scout it out. Make sure it’s safe before we commit to setting up camp."

"That isn’t necessarily true as we pick our way North. I can do my best to keep us out of sight of patrols... it's no guarantee, but I've done it many times before... it's good to be heading back onto the tundra. Does one of you have the map?"

She keeps Tork cuddle close as the cold is a bit much. She has wrapped her bedroll around her for extra protection.

Before leaving earlier she does her best to cover her casting of goodberry as they are going to be needed and one became dinner leaving 9 for more trying times. She keeps her one package of ration for another time. Reason why she is rather lean.

Her cloak & bedroll offers very little comfort against the cold and marches among the party. "We must obtain shelter quickly. It is obviously, we are not prepared for this cold. She tends to march along and uses large Úlfr as partial wind break against her four feet, eight inches of stature.

She replies to Úlfr, "I'm afraid this cold wind would do Tork no good. This weather is fearful for flying. And our best cover as well." and to Tork, "Only fly if you feel safe." She gives her Raven the choice as she knows Tork heard Úlfr. She speaks in Erenlander to Tork (INT 6) as it is the only language it understands and can speak.

She is glad cover will be had soon. She really didn't want to set up her tent. Her emerald greens are doing their best to be watchful, but the wind is not helpful. She is not a snow elf, but the harsh winters of Caraheen have given her enough experience.

Note: Azote has +7 disable device but no thieves' tools & +8 stealth if needed.

@WanderOne No traps or locked doors located if you're trying to get into the tower.

Petra's eyes widen at Varin's suggestion to 'hide how many of them there are.' She undoes her makeshift 'mop' and re-ties her bundle as a 'hobo sack' at the end of her staff while she answers him.



"That's brilliant! Do you mean we walk in each other's tracks to create a single trail for the snow to fill? And Ulfr walks last, his big enough to obscure ours into one bootprint?"



The dwarrow frowns down at her short legs. "I have the smallest stride and I doubt the rest of you want to imitate it. Perhaps, Ulfr, you could carry me on your back or shoulders? I would find a way to make it up to you later, I'm not looking for free favors."

Survival check rolled to "avoid patrols" and it can be to "Aid Another on check" (+2 if 10 or better) if that's what's needed since Ulfr got a 26? Or if it needs to be separate then use it that way.

The result needs an additional +2 added in IF we are in Petra's "Favored Region: Central Erenland"

Jasir joins in the exchanging of goodbyes clasping wrists then offering a bow while his palm flattens against his own sternum. "Fair waters and good fortunes, friends.". He watches the gnomes depart for a long moment before turning to consider the area and the gathering chill of a northern nightfall.

Given Jasir's voracity for knowledge it's all but a certainty that every available detail of the route has been transcribed into one of his meticulously cared for lorebooks, so that doesn't seem to hold much concern. "I have the ability to shield myself or others from sight, should there be great need," he mentions absently before waving a hand towards the ruins. "But we will not be able to get far before nightfall when the agents of the enemy have every advantage. It seems fate forces our hand. Do you wish to risk my arts being used, or should we attempt to reconnoiter utilizing only more mundane means?"

Varin moves through the thin layer of snow, heading straight for the tower. His pace is steady, eyes sharp. He begins a slow circle around the structure, scanning for doors, windows—any way in or out. Quiet. Focused. Watching for anything out of place.

The dwarrow replies to Jasir, surprised that no one else addressed his direct question but assuming they either had not heard him or were reluctant to offer an opinion.

"I appreciate you asking if we think it is safe to do so before you use a particular Talent. For now I think we are trying not to call attention to our presence, given how recently Wexley had to bribe the way past a watchtower. So we will just have to use our eyes and ears like Varin is doing."


She watches Varin scout around the tower, without Varin first answering her question about what he meant when he suggested "perhaps we can hide how many of us there are." He didn't hear her, probably, her voice does not carry well or he was distracted by looking around for threats.



When Azote voices her preference to stay in the only available shelter overnight and Seelah agrees, and with Varin already inspecting the shelter and Jasir offering to do the same, Petra figures the majority is already decided. She adds her voice anyway. "We can stay the night here, attractive alternatives are few when it's this dark and this icy."

@HeroOfSometimes: Greemology informs me that one PC's check alone (he got a 26) is sufficient to accomplish the Midnight setting specific Survival Check for "avoiding patrols" even up to max difficulty.

Greemology also said there is a Midnight setting specific way to try to cover your own tracks (in this case, from the riverbank to the shelter) with a Survival Check. Therefore, would you find it appropriate to apply my Survival Check result of a 26 to covering our foot tracks?

Especially as it fits in with the makeshift attempt to obscure any foot tracks in the snow AND the secondary idea of walking in each other's tracks to confuse the issue of 'how many' passed by?

@Mica_pun_worthy Between his check alone and the oncoming storm, someone would have to basically watch you do it or follow a few minutes behind you to notice your tracks. Regardless, I'll allow it. lol

The door of the tower surrenders with a brittle groan, spilling an ice-cold draft across aged stone tiles. A ragged carpet of snow has drifted through arrow‑slits to one side, sculpting dunes of white against the inner wall. The chamber is wide enough for ten men abreast yet empty of furniture save for a waist‑high brazier toppled on its side, its iron bowl clogged with centuries of ash turned to slate‑grey ice.

In the darkness, you see slender slits ring the outer wall, their edges chipped where someone once tried to widen them. Beyond, the blizzard snarls, flakes swirling like sparks in the beam.

Stone steps wind upward along the curvature of the tower. Halfway to the next floor the stairwell collapses into a ragged cavity, its upper run lost beneath a tumble of cracked blocks and frozen beams. The break leaves a dark pocket of rubble large enough for a man to crawl beneath, if he doesn’t mind the cold grit of fallen mortar.

A water‑stained banner hangs limply from a corroded bracket near the stairs: charcoal cloth embroidered with a black wolf rampant; its threads dulled to ghost‑silver.

Long dead soot still clings to the air, stirred by the gale that whistles through broken rafters.

No footprints mar the floor but your own. No fresh bedrolls, no trash from scavengers, no spoor of nesting beasts, only the unsettling stillness of a place that has waited far too long to be noticed again.

A second floor yawns overhead in wavering shadow, reachable with care if you brave the fractured stair. Down here, the stone keeps most of the wind at bay, promising a hard but survivable night should you choose to light a fire.

Relying on his survival skills Úlfr begins mixing the ancient ash with snow to daub the holes in the wall closed.

@Greemology I'd say there's enough around to accomplish what you're trying too do, without the roll. If you need to roll or not sort of depend on how much you're looking for.

Úlfr's words cause the Sarcosan to think for a moment, not from doubting his giant companion but while considering the other members of their little band. After a moment of consideration, "Were it you and I alone I would agree without hesitation. But given our company I would counsel travel under the cover of day. Besides... I can admit that this northern wind blows right through me."

Jasir tilts his head to the side at Petra's reply before rolling one shoulder slightly. Dark eyebrows rise towards an unseen hairline that one can assume accompanies a smile. "My arts offer quick solutions to certain issues. But there is ever a danger to their use... and I'd prefer to not burden others with such except in dire need," he replies if only to affirm what the Dwarrow likely knows of him.

As the group slips into the ruins Jasir's eyes turn immediately towards the second floor and the various points of the unknown. "This place doesn't have the look of a den, but caution demands we ought to check that hole over there. Meanwhile, I think I shall see if it is within my ability to navigate the stairs to check the second floor."

The Sarcosan moves to start making his way up the collapsed staircase with that, his steps slow and methodical in testing as he makes his way up and begins analyzing the best approach towards traversing their break.

Jasir's going to try the stairs after setting his pack in a corner near the door. Let me know if I have to roll anything for him to make his way up!

@Itami Nothing special to make it up, everything is stable enough, no particular danger. Just a busted staircase that Ulfr would have to seriously squeeze to get though.

Snow sifts through the rafters like spilled sand in an hour‑glass; somewhere above, a beam creaks as though trying to remember a cadence of marching feet.
The climb is awkward, chunks of stone block the way, boots skidding on frost‑glazed mortar, but at last you haul yourself(or selves) onto what remains of the watch‑floor.

The outer half of the chamber has slid away over the years, leaving a jagged mouth in the wall. Snow pours through the breach, piling against shattered bunks and warped shield‑racks. Wind keens here in brief, mournful chords before turning back into the night.

A niche opposite the breach shelters a heavy oaken desk cracked down the center. A once‑fine cloak, now stiff with mildew, hangs from a peg; beneath it, ink‑stained parchment curls upon itself, the writing long bled into illegible tracks. A dented brass lantern still swings from its chain above.

Six narrow bed‑frames remain bolted to the curve of the inner wall. Straw ticking has rotted to black mulch; iron foot‑chests stand ajar, stripped of anything more valuable than moth‑eaten linen.

The spiral you climbed once continues. Blocks, beams, and a rust‑filmed suit of mail lie jumbled where the upper flight gave way. Most of a corpse wedged beneath a fallen beam, rusted mail still sheaths sun‑bleached bones. Close inspection uncovers:
- A splintered kite‑shield emblazoned with a black wolf rampant,
- A bastardsword thrust under rubble, blade dulled to ash‑grey,
- A bronze oath‑ring slipped from skeletal finger to floor, its interior etched "Guard until dawn, that others may live.

Every breath clouds in the lantern‑light; every heartbeat seems to echo twice, once in your chest and once in stone that should not pulse at all. Nothing moves… yet the air tastes of a promise waiting to be kept.

Down below the brazier still beckons with the chance of fire. Up here, only wind and memory keep the watch.

The rare sight of paper with ink on it beckons powerfully to Petra but she hopes there will be time to investigate soon.


She nods thanks to Jasir for investigating the upper floor and murmurs "Tread carefully," with gentle concern.


She also offers thanks to Varin and others who investigated and ensured the shelter was safe enough (run down and broken in places as it may be). And risk or not, she's ready to call her Gift to mend any injuries that befall Jasir for braving the upper floor.


The dwarrow starts helping Ulfr block the crevases with ash, snow, and ice, reaching the low and cramped spaces that might be tricky for the half-giant (as she's begun to think of him, fancifully).


"Better to pack the walls first, light the fire afterward. Less chance of smoke or light giving us away from afar."

@HeroOfSometimes: It's great that the snow will cover our tracks without extra effort in the Skill Check that Petra will be applying.

From a player perspective--not the god's eye view of a GM--Petra/I can have no certain idea of whether the snow that just started falling and covering the bare ground will keep snowing for minutes or hours?

@Mica_pun_worthy I would say you and Ulfr know that, at least. I'd give it to you with your survival checks, I know it was to cover your tracks, but the weather is actively helping in that task, so I can connect the dots.

Jasir contemplates the cloak for a moment, weighing his ability to mend it. He ends up using his unstrung bow to lift the aged garment after a few moments before moving over to investigate the desk. "There's a desk up here, which might be the best source of firewood we have," he calls down to those still on the ground floor. "But it will take some effort to push it down. I might need help."

He then goes through the standard procedure of searching the desk over for any useful remnants. Perhaps in discarding some refuse he glanced down at the ring and lifts it from the floor. A few moments of consideration later and he slips it away in order to give it more consideration at leisure at a later time.

After completing his sweep around the crumbling tower, Varin steps inside without a word. He moves with quiet purpose, setting the overturned brazier upright and giving the narrow arrow slits a quick glance—checking sightlines, judging visibility.

Seeing Jasir already heading up the stairs, Varin nods slightly and lets him take the lead on whatever needs figuring out above.

Instead, Varin turns his attention to the broken furniture. He moves to the rotted bed frames, wrenching the weaker joints apart with practiced effort. The wood groans and cracks as he breaks it down, piece by piece, then tosses the usable scraps down the stairs toward the brazier.

Next, he gathers the ruined, dusty linens—torn sheets and fraying blankets—and carries the bundle back down. He tosses the fabric into a separate pile nearby, careful to keep it dry enough to catch flame.

With everything in place, Varin kneels beside the brazier, pulling out flint and steel. Silent and focused, he begins the slow work of coaxing a flame to life.
Nodding to the pile of cloth "Don't use that for the fire. A few of us might need it for insulation to keep warm in our travels."

@Smiley The linens are hardly serviceable, but some insulation is better than none. I will say you find enough for each of you. However, due to their condition each only provides a +2 Circumstance Bonus to resist cold exposure.

- The ruined tower was part of a Dorn watch‑line raised two centuries ago to warn the Dorn of orc warbands crossing the Giant’s Teeth.
- Contemporary battle reports note that Captain Rurik Halvardsen and twenty‑odd militia held this post through a three‑night blizzard during the Third Orc Incursion, buying refugees time to flee east.
- Sources add that no relief ever came; the garrison’s last signal‑fire was seen the same night the watch‑line fell silent, a fact that later spawned campfire tales of oath‑bound spirits.

- Although most of the house bent knee after Izrador’s triumph, a few exiled scions still aid the northern resistance; showing the crest (or correctly quoting the creed) can win cautious trust from them.

Seelah:
Profession (Soldier) — Honor‑Watch Rite
- By the Old Dorn watch regulations, a sentry who falls at his post is owed a final honor‑watch: comrades stand vigil through the night so the fallen may "see the dawn" one last time.
- The correct form is to plant the watch‑captain’s blade point‑down before the body, symbolising that the guard now rests but the duty remains. A single soldier keeps silent watch while others rotate at set bells.
- You also recall that a salute at first light, palm over heart then up to the brow, formally releases the dead from duty.
- Applying this rite here, sword inverted, shield propped beside the bones, silent guard until sunrise, should let any Oathbound spirits stand down with honor.

Jasir moves to stand beside Seelah, given that the Erenlander has taken similar interest in the remains of the fallen. "This place we have found ourselves... This is Halvardsen’s Vigil. And this... if I am reading the heraldry right, is Captain Rurik Halvardsen."

After a moment more his eyes slide to the side and he adds. "Local's say that this place is kept by at least one guardsman whose spirit lingers... We should see to it that the captain is allowed to seek his rest." He then produces he ring he had found from the ground and stretches it out towards Seelah. "I will join the vigil. But first place over the hilt of that blade and recite, 'Guard until dawn, that others may live'. It is the honor afforded to a captain." The Sarcosan then moves to start arranging the remains respectfully.

Although Azote is really only knowledgeable about those matters of Caraheen. Still, she fully agrees with comrade Seelah. She replies to her, "What every you wish of me for respect."

Guessing that Azote cannot setup her tent inside, she instead offers it up as a tarp to cover all against the cold. She still intends to be warm in her bedroll that is actually oversized to smaller stature and may share it and extend it to Úlfr.

Everyone gets a goodberry for the night meal instead of dealing with rations. Still Azote agrees to fire for warmth. It is obvious that this is the way Azote normally travels since she can't expose herself to more civilized area's. She is very used to traveling alone.

Tork is a cheap lookout now and then for the night. Whenever he wants to check and when not then he is in close contact with Azote.

Varin remains silent throughout the vigil, his head bowed low, eyes fixed on the floor as the others speak their words for the long-fallen guardian. His hands rest clasped in his lap, scarred knuckles pale in the dim firelight. He doesn't offer prayers or platitudes—only a quiet, respectful stillness.

When it ends, he rises without a word and carries his empty cookpot to the tower’s entrance. Opening the door with a creak, he sets the pot just outside, angling it to catch the falling snow.

Returning inside, Varin grabs his worn blanket and wraps it tightly around his shoulders. The fabric smells of travel and smoke, but it's warm. He settles down beside the door, back braced against it, where he has a clear view of both the room and the whole above them

"I’ll take first watch," he mutters, voice low and tired but steady. "We might think about doubling up. Just in case someone—or something—was watching us before we found this place."

His eyes don’t blink often as he begins his silent vigil, listening to the wind outside and the quiet crackle of the brazier’s flames.

Sounds to me like you are supposed to change out the watch at each bell so more can participate in honoring the fallen and deceased? And further it sounds like the watch is meant to be a single person at a time?" Petra offers in response to both Varin and Ulfr.


If given the opportunity, the dwarrow stands a silent hour of vigil imagining the life and final night of this Dorn captain.


Her shift is either second since the first has been claimed, or anytime after Varin takes the first.

THE ISHENSA RIVER | HALVARDSEN'S VIGIL | EARLY NIGHTFALL
Outside, the blizzard claws at stone and flesh alike, but within the ruined tower an old vow stirs to life.
Snow-scoured stones form the shattered remains of what once was a stout battlement. A crumbled wall opens to the wind-blasted plain; within the circular tower, bone-white frost clings to broken parapets and jagged masonry. Embers of a once-bright hearth cold, the only light now is the pale moon gleaming off ice-laden shelves of rock.

In the budding frozen tempest, Seelah steps forward, the ritual words rasping through lips numbed by cold. "Guard until dawn, that others may live."

Her breath hangs like pale incense as she finishes the ritual and places the sword, tip-down, upon the fallen captain’s shield in reverence, the fallen man’s sigil barely visible beneath the rime.

For a heartbeat nothing happens.

As her cadence fades in the frosty air. Ice flakes drift from the shattered lintel as a tall figure of pale blue ether coalesces above the weather‑scored plinth. The translucent Dorn captain, helm crested, cloak in tatters of moonlit frost, reaches down. His spectral hand closes round the rust eaten longsword, draws it free with the ring of his oath, then plants it, point-down, before the crumbled wall. Steel bites stone.

A low, resonant thrum rolls through the hall. The wind dies. Heat, gentle as an early spring sun, washes outward, melting frost and warming stiff fingers. The blizzard still howls beyond the walls, but here in the tower the air settles into comfortable calm.

The captain straightens, eyes like banked coals upon the company. He gestures once, an invitation. Seelah steps beside him. The ghost loosens the sword from the stone and in solemn silence, he presents the sword across an open palm. She accepts, plants it as he did, and the soothing aura blazes anew. The captain nods, approval and trust mingled, and resumes his silent watch.

So the vigil passes. The Dorn’s ghost stands unwavering, sentinel and symbol both. One by one, the companions claim their turn at the sword. Each feels, upon gripping the hilt, a pulse of enduring strength, not a mind or soul, but the indelible imprint of Captain Halvardsen’s will, steadfast in the steel. Outside, the blizzard intensifies; within, the barrier holds, hearth‑warm and windless. The spirit never speaks, never moves, except to mark each change of watch with a sharp, silent salute.

At last, a pale dawn bleeds across the snowbound hills through the broken wall. Seelah returns the blade, completing the circle. As the first light strikes the broken tower, she salutes. The captain receives the sword, pressing fist to chest, and in solemn ritual intones the words of the ancient border creed, "I stand relieved. Maintain the Watch, that many may live."

With a final nod, the phantom dissolves into morning mist. Yet the Dawn-Ward thrums with quiet power in Seelah’s hands, its new covenant born, its oath unbroken.

Though his spirit is gone, his presence lingers in the steel, a bond of vigilance and honor renewed.

Seelah alone stands with Dawn-Ward. The storm broken, the long watch begun anew.

Jasir is content to assist where he can in the rite and the watch at night. As he is the second to the last one on watch he spends time following his shift in consideration of the cloak he'd retrieved the prior night. The necessity for warmer gear was all the more apparent to the Sarcosan and the idea of risking a little bit of magic before they depart and work their ways northwards has him contemplating the mildew-y garment.

The morning would otherwise see him simply making ready to depart up until the results of the ritual bear out. That sees him joining in the motion of saluting the spectral captain, his gaze lingering on the departing spirit... it leaves the Sarcosan reflective this morning. He records portions of it within his lorebook, which he closes when the group is marshalled for the coming day.

Would Jasir be able to restore the cloak to some measure of usability to supplement his clothes for something a bit warmer? Can clean the thing with Prestidigitation and mending before they head out in the morning.

@Itami Yea, I'll allow it. Not gonna treat it as a full cold-weather outfit, but I'll give you a +3 Circumstance bonus if you're wearing it.

It's a gentle surprise to Petra how spiritual it feels standing watch with the Dorn Captain.

Afterward, instead of her usual nightmare she dreams of valor and fellowship among the Dorn sentries.

In the morning the dwarrow wakes to witness Seelah with her new sword and tells her, "It is a fitting honor."


Well-rested, Petra emerges into the snow and gazes around, ready to depart and try to keep their passage onward to Giant's Teeth a subtle one. "Perhaps now we could try the trick of walking in the same foot tracks to confuse patrols or pursuers?"

Our ebony Erelander is different now. Seelah has seen battles, experienced victory and pain. But never before had she encountered a martial spirit, or been blessed with a covenant item. She’d spent most of her career honing prowess with Bladeguard, and now Seelah has a new weapon to learn, and eventually, to master.

Maintain the Watch, that many may live, Seelah commits quietly to herself.

You’re not the only one fascinated by it, Seelah replies kindly to Azote. Seelah carefully hands ta Dawn-Ward to Azote. It’s truly an honor for me to wield it, she says. Most soldiers never have moments like this. It’s as though, my life has built up to this moment. I don’t want to over-dramatize, but…well, it’s very special, for me.

Varin gives Seelah a firm pat on the back and a nod that speaks more than words. "Use it well. We’re going to need every edge we can get."

With that, he steps outside and retrieves his pot, now holding a shallow layer of gathered snow. He brings it over to the brazier and sets it near the heat, carefully working to melt it down into water.

Once the pot’s set, he moves to help Azote break down the tent, steady hands pulling poles free and rolling the fabric tight despite the lingering cold.

Afterward, he crouches near the pile of old linen they'd salvaged and begins stuffing it into his coat and underlayers—creating makeshift padding to guard against the creeping cold. It’s not pretty, but it’s warm, and for Varin, that’s good enough.

Just before the group quits the area, Jasir considers the aged cloak for several long moments before working his fingers through the somatic motions that serve to draw upon the least of his gifts as a channeler. The mildew which riddles the cloak is forced to explode off of it and vanish in a little swirl of particles. Another gesture and any fraying and holes knit shut. And then a final gesture and the cloak colors itself to match the rest of his ensemble. Finally the cloak is swung around his shoulders and patted in place before Jasir ducks his head.

The satisfied body language Jasir wears speaks volumes. He loves magic, even if he doesn't get to draw on it nearly as much as he might like.

Hope glints like frost under first light, but winter favors sharp teeth.
The ruined tower lies silent behind you, its windows flickering with the last embers of a fulfilled oath, long overdue. Seelah steps into the pale day, newly forged covenant blade in her hands, the Dawn-Ward's steel drinking the color of the sky. Ulfr lifts a hand toward the east and beckons his companions to follow. Thin bands of sunbreak paint the horizon, but a crawling veil of white already folds in the distance. Those versed in survival feel their skin prickle, a telltale bite that warns the lull in the weather will not last.

Snowpack grinds beneath boots. The trail winds through shattered ramparts and half buried cairns, relics of wars so old even the stones have forgotten their banners. Hopeful jokes drift on warm breath fogging in the chilled air, but Aryth answers with indifference as the wind begins to pick and the air begins to bite. Mist thickens between the standing stones, muffling sound and vision alike.

Ulfr motions the party onward toward the whitening air. Their destination somewhere in the distance within its cold, icy embrace.

Your bright night has bought you strength - see how quickly Aryth would steal it back.

Varin trudges silently at the rear of the group, his usual vigilance dulled by the creeping numbness setting into his limbs. He forces himself to step where the others have stepped, half out of caution, half because lifting his legs any higher feels like dragging stones through molasses.

The wind bites deep through his patched layers and stuffed linen, turning his cheeks raw and red, his nose constantly dripping and caked with frost. His fingers, despite being tucked into gloves and sleeves, lose feeling hours into the march—stiff, clumsy things that ache whenever he tries to flex them.

By the time they've crossed the halfway mark, Varin’s lips are cracked and blue, his breath shallow and ragged. He stumbles more than once, catching himself each time, but never calling out. He doesn’t speak. Doesn’t complain.

Ice clings to the hem of his cloak and trousers. One of his ears is red and swollen; the other blackens at the tip—a sign of frostbite setting in. His jaw trembles uncontrollably as he scans the empty whiteness behind them, still doing his duty, but barely holding on.

Each footstep is a silent act of will. Each breath burns. And still, he presses forward—silent, suffering, and watchful.

Before their trek though the snow Petra offers a healer's advice to her companions about cold weather travel in ways that best protect their bodies and body heat.


Heat your head covering and boots by the fire before donning them. Layer your clothes. Drink frequently. Snack frequently. Slow your pace if you start to sweat, as when you are cresting a hill, but try to keep moving...



During their walk she tries to be stealthy and conserve energy by not saying much. She also doesn't want to distract them from noticing any strange tracks or something in the distance like howls or light or smoke that may forewarn of an intrusion.


She tries to stay alert herself.

GM, I hope the initial 15 that I rolled works for Survival Aid Another to grant +2 on Fort saves to 5 party members? If more rolls are needed, Petra's bonus is +10.

GM/you had asked for Survival roll prior and I got a 23, not sure what that was for? Would also be happy for that to apply to granting the other 5 party members +2 on Fort saves if more than one roll is needed?

It's hard to put a finger on just where things start going wrong for Jasir. But they do. In a rather large way. A rather unfortunate uptick of wind catches him in dead on, ripping open his cloak and sending a chill straight through him that he seems to have a hard time shaking off. He adopts a more stooped posture that would be more normal on a man three times his age and his hands curl in across his abdomen. During pauses he works to put his chilled fingers through little exercises to keep them ready for casting but a few hours in he gives it up.

Sadly he's not the best source for heartening banter at this point. But he's likely able to keep his feet moving and his body shuffling forward at a surprising clip considering his geriatric posture. If speed hobbling were an event he'd certainly be a contender.

Even as heavily wrapped as she is, the cold was creeping in. She pulled and tugged on the bedroll trying to get fight against it. She was failing. She was having harder time marching as the time passed.

After an hour, she couldn't stop the cold, and it was sapping her strength, but she would stop. She struggled to keep moving with everyone, but her vision was blurring and moments later she was a pile of bedroll laying in the snow unconscious. And of course, still she wouldn't complain.

She is about a total of 100 pounds of dead weight gear and all totaled. Azote is rather lean. All you hear is Tork squalling, "She's down."

"I can risk my Gift to help those of us whose bodies the cold has bitten into the hardest, if the majority do not disagree?" Petra offers.


She wants to know that enough of her companions don't think the likelihood is too high that she would make matters worse if she used magic.


They have traveled with her long enough to know she substitutes "Talent" (arcane studies) or "Gift" (spiritual connection to the world/innate abilities) when she's talking about magic, depending on whose it is.

"Or I can just use what my Oma--my grandmother taught me," the dwarrow adds, "like I used to revive Varin and Tefli?" [Natural Healer]

Frozen winds and hungry eyes are all that await on the road to the Giant’s Teeth
The wind that you were spared from once has a debt to collect.

Snow hisses across last-night’s footprints, erasing the memory of warmth. Breath hangs in crystal strands; cloaks already crackle with rime. The party presses on behind Úlfr, whose broad shoulders cleave the mist like a prow. Petra’s head jerks up first, faint, hungry howls ride the gale. Moments later Úlfr confirms what instinct already growls in his chest: a wolf-pack is shadowing the column, always ahead despite the trail’s bend. Their path narrows toward a gully flanked by low banks, exactly the kind of kill-box a clever pack would choose.

The night’s grace proves fleeting. Each hour in the freezing winds leeches heat from muscle and spirit; everyone cradles numb fingers, feels the sting of a splitting chill in the lungs, and the ache of cold induced fatigue, their bodies struggling to keep them warm. Yet the party’s morale still glimmers—Seelah’s newly bonded Dawn-Ward glows with a pale inner coal, and someone jokes dryly about "beating the cold by sheer stubbornness" earning a weary chuckle.

A choice now looms.

Drive straight on through the gully. It is the quickest line to the Teeth, but the wolves command that ground; a dire form paces the upper bank, steam curling from its jaws.

Skirt south around the ridge. Adding two, maybe three, hours will dodge the natural choke-point, but the storm deepens and its not getting any warmer.

Azote was off 19 from cold and 18 from healer Petra leaves only of 1 HP. Not even a shiver left. "Your healing is amazing and far stronger than mine."

Jasir contemplates his state and his current need for healing. When Petra seeks to extend a healing hand he stretches his hand out to her shoulder and offers a gentle squeeze with a bright red hand. "I shall... be best helped by stepping out of this dire cold. As I said before... this northern wind pierces. I would quit it ere you use your gift."

The Sarcosan regards the pass before allowing his breath to cloud in a huff. "I believe we will be better served by going through, despite the danger of the wolves." He gives Ulfr a look and tilts his head as he thinks, ever contemplative even while freezing. "How far do you imagine us from the nearest patrol? Miles?" It doesn't take a mind-reader to recognize that he's weighing the viability of drawing upon some rather unsubtle abilities should the need arise.

"If I've done my job well... and I believe I have, at least a mile depending on luck. The wolves have the advantage of scent, though. If we are forced to kill them, we need to collect their bladders to ward other predators."

White mist hovers like held breath among toppled cairns, a deep growl unravels the silence.
The party files into the narrow cut of the gully, Ulfr ranging a dozen paces ahead, frost-rimmed braids whipping in the wind. With practiced speed he loops rawhide lines between rocks and buries stake-hooks beneath the crusted snow, a hunter’s lattice meant to catch unwary paws. The icy fog swirls so thick that sight vanishes past thirty feet, but the growls refuse to stay hidden.

Snow suddenly erupts on the left bank as a grey shape charges, then the snare snaps shut. A yelp, a spray of powder, and one wolf thrashes, hind-leg tangled. Another lopes from the opposite rise and finds Ulfr’s second line; the trap's teeth bite and the beast’s leap turns to a flailing tumble. Their cries draw the pack leader.

A dire wolf, broad as a pony and black as midnight iron, stalks from the mist. Steam puffs from its jaws; frost pearls across the rune-scarred stones. One unbound wolf pads at its flank, hackles high. They pause only to see their kin struggling, then lope downhill toward the party, intent on fresh meat.

Steel clears scabbards, bows creak, spells kindle behind clenched teeth. The ambush sprung, but the company stands ready.

For the elf who assents to receive the Gift, the dwarrow rubs the river stone in her pocket and speaks in an ancient language that only comes to her in such moments, one she thinks of as "first Dwarven" that predates even Old Dwarven runes. A language in which she asks the river to take back the cold it gave to the sky.

That feeling of roots flowing through her begins, the ring her under bandage heating, and a not unpleasant jolt passes unseen between her palm and Azote's palm.

Seem she feels that war hasn't ended for her although she wishes it would. You also feel Azote is on the run and perhaps she joined here to do just that. There is an unwritten bond between the two. Both understand the need for healing.

It's been a day for the Sarcosan and with the way that he shaking it's unlikely that he's going to be much use in a fight. He can't even feel his fingers, let alone be relied upon to draw his bow. But this is why he practices, why he's always drawing sigils in the air and working his fingers through the movements that allow him to draw on magic. A scintillating pattern of colors burst forth from his fingers in a cone that washes over Wolf 3.

The air shivers with a sudden flare of impossible color. Jasir’s arcane syllables cut the air, and a fan of searing hues blooms across the nearest wolf’s muzzle. The beast recoils, but a snarl of will snaps its eyes clear, the spell washes off like morning light on hoarfrost. The wolf jerks at the wire‐snare Ulfr planted moments before. It slings snow as it thrashes about but the trap holds, its legs still tangled.

Ahead, the dire wolf’s breath plumes in white gusts while another pack-mate breaks from its flank, bounding toward the giant-blooded hunter. Ulfr pivots; the lunging jaws clap shut on empty air, scattering rime from his cloak.

A low, rolling growl rumbles from the dire wolf as it lowers its head and readies to advance, amber eyes fixed on the party. The mist swirls, carrying the scent of wet fur and old carnage.

Ulfr plants his heel, hefts a jagged stone the size of a helmet, and hurls it downhill. The rock whistles through white haze and smashes into the nearest trapped wolf with a dull crack of bone. The beast yelps, snow spraying as it is rocked by the blow.

A heartbeat later Azote flings her hands wide. Frozen grasses, half-buried briars, and brittle willow-switches answer her call, surging up in a forty-foot burst. Green and grey tendrils twist into living snares, just as the ancient spells of druids once did, binding flesh where they find it. The dire wolf’s foreleg is yanked mid-stride; vines cinch around its shaggy chest and haunches. For a moment the monster thrashes, teeth clacking, but raw strength tears the stems apart, and it lopes on, snow flying, in a low, predatory charge toward Varin.

Jasir closes one eye in a partial wince as he feels his spell get resisted. Unfortunately sometimes these things simply play out like this. Rather than bemoan his luck shifts his position and resolves to try again. The cold momentarily forgotten he maneuvers amongst the battleline of his friends in order to better orient himself. Once more a cascade of colors burst forth from his hands, this time erupting over Varin's shoulder to sweep out and over the dire wolf and its nearby companion.

With magic erupting all around her and her friends hampered by the cold they've suffered, Petra makes the split second decision that this is no time to hold back.

Her options are limited by how closely her friends (and the entangle spell) are clustered around her, including Jasir's shift to stand beside Ulfr and Varin before his impressive multihued magic explosion.


The dwarrow scoots her boot deeper into the cold earth and presses her palm against her "giant-kin" friend Ulfr's hip. Announcing her intentions she says, "Ulfr, ju tjockare huden ar, desto svarare att bita!"

Next she speaks the "first Dwarven" tongue, willing his hide to thicken. Snaking roots of Aryth's power climb through her and transfer into the Dorn, winding around his limbs with a painless jolt that offers no outward signs of magical energy.


Lastly she drops her staff and bundled pack, draws her knife, and wades into the fray to confront the [third] wolf still crouching amid Azote's cumbersomely difficult terrain of gnarly roots---aiming to stop at least this wolf from moving past her to attack her friends.

Seelah barrels forward, blade sweeping in a gleaming arc meant to hamstring the dire wolf, yet the huge beast lurches aside, the strike hissing past to strike sparks from ice-glazed stone.

Behind her, Jasir thrusts both palms outward. A whorl of impossible color fans across the gully; shards of indigo and emerald slice through the fog. The dire wolf’s eyes glass over, muscles seize, jaws slacken, and the brute staggers, stunned senseless for a heartbeat too long. The nearer free wolf scrunches its muzzle, shakes off the rainbow glare, and keeps its footing.

Across the gully, vines still clutch and tighten. One grey wolf twists and claws, but the woven snare of rawhide and briar holds fast; another entangled beast gathers enough leverage to snap at Varin’s leg yet finds only air and snow. The hunter’s trap-line and Azote’s magic hold, even as the stunned pack-lord looms motionless in the frozen haze.

As his skin hardens it reminds Úlfr of his mother's tinctures. Directly afterwards and clearly angry he stares a challenge into the Dire wolf's eyes with direct eye contact over Varin's head. He throws another large rock as hard as he can, pulling from the large debris littering the gully floor.
He shouts at the wolf in Norther. "Back down!"

Varin darts in, knuckles like iron. His fist slams beneath the dire wolf’s jaw line; the giant head snaps sideways, but brute endurance blunts the deeper shock and the monster shakes off the stunning strike before it can take hold. Still dazed by Jasir’s magic, the beast can only wheeze, muscles locked in tremor.

Ulfr bellows a Norther curse, hefts another jagged stone, and hurls it point-blank. The rock cracks against the wolf’s weather-blackened muzzle, blood spatters white snow. Never losing eye contact, through its stupor the dire wolf’s ears flatten, hackles rippling under the force of his will.

Off to the side, Azote murmurs an elder lullaby. A ripple of quiet drifts across the gully; two wolves quiver, then lower their heads, tension bleeding from their frames as the spell soothes predatory fury.

Yet instinct to escape remains. Though calmed, the snared wolf, tugs at the rawhide loop, snare stakes hold fast.

The dire wolf, jaws flecked crimson, can only glare, still stunned, trembling where it stands.

Petra flinches with a healer's sympathy when the rock crashes into the dire wolf.

Azote's way of soothing the wolves is startlingly effective. "Good thinking, Azote," Petra compliments, her heart lurching with wonder at further proof of elvenkind's mysterious resonance with the natural world.


Rather than attack the now calmed wolf in front of her, Petra lowers her knife and drops it into her offhand.

The dwarrow backs away from the ensnared wolf and turns in time to see Seelah lunge toward their biggest threat. If that dire wolf had been lulled too--hard to tell, because its stance is oddly still but not tensed?--that calm won't last under renewed attacks.


Petra grips the riverstone in her pocket and asks Aryth's help again in the primal language of dwarves. Saliva in her mouth becomes bitter bile, and she spits an acidic gob at the...

dire wolf only wolf still attacking, before her own cheeks blister. It's just as disgusting as the first time she ever managed it.

@GM: WHICH wolves are calmed and lowered their heads and lost their aggression? Wolf #3 was one because you mentioned the snare that we were discussing in the Private Subforum. But was the other "calmed" wolf #1?

EDIT: Was aiming for Dire Wolf when I first posted. But Seelah put it unconscious by the time I finished that post....and it would be silly to attack an unconscious enemy....so I am switching targets now that I have updated information to ANY wolf not calmed by Azote's calm animals.

IF Wolf #2 is the only one left still fighting....then Petra would not take -4 penalty on ranged attack for it being in melee.

Azote calmed Wolf 1 & Wolf 2. Wolf 3 is caught in Entrapment. And by looks the dire wolf is dead. I believe that is the status. Both Entanglement last & calming last 40 rounds each. She can end the entangle area & the calming has no area effect.

And Azote did not cast any channeler spells. Appears the effects are caused by her connection to nature as there is no visible casting either. She did call upon nature. (Rather druidic like)

Suggestion is to kill the entrapped one then deal with the two calmed ones, one at a time. Azote is not interested in having a wolf for a companion/pet. (Wolf steaks)

Given the odds turning rather overwhelmingly in the favor of the intrepid band, Jasir lowers his hands which he'd clearly been intending to use for more magic. His arms drop back into his cloak and he starts seeking to extrapolate from his knowledge of wolves and direwolves the likelihood of their den being close by, whether for purposes of shelter.

Azote likes the thought to just track the wolves back to the den, but leaving these three to our rear means they will probably come again at us and Azote ability to entrap & charm are both used up for the day. Otherwise, the best time to end the wolves is now. She can however if needed rebute or command the wolves but that lasts only 10 minutes.

Azote can affect things but she cannot charm or communicate with the wolves. Next level it will take a saving throw for them to even attack her. And next level she may get new spells so who knows what she will receive.

If the thought is not to kill the wolvies then Azote voluntaries to try to make them more friendly to us. It is up the party if they want her try this. But this is per animal and not all three at once. She has no limit on the number of tries short of GM intervention. But the DC is probably a 20 and a failed attempt could/should make the situation worse.

Seelah steps through drifting mist, covenant blade gleaming frost-blue. With measured breath she pivots, then drives Dawn-Ward in a two-handed arc. The edge bites deep beneath the dire wolf’s ruff; ice and blood burst skyward. A hollow crack of spine, and the pack-lord topples, breathing shallow upon trampled snow.

Across the gully Petra sights along her fingertips; a bead of green acid hisses away. It splatters Wolf #3’s flank, smoking through winter coat and drawing a sharp yelp.

The remaining wolves stare at their fallen alpha. The one beside the Dire Wolf's flank whines, backs away and bolts up the bank, tail tucked. The two still tangled, one calmed by Azote’s magic but still snare bound, the other entangled in both snare and vine, strain and snap at the cords, but the bindings hold tight.

For a heartbeat, the gully is quiet save for ragged breathing and the distant, receding patter of fleeing paws.

Combat is effectively over, Coup de grace likely successful. We can get out of initiative. Wolf 1 was the only to escape. Once we determine final actions toward the wolves we can move along.

The wind steals the horizon.
Snow knifes sideways across the Barrens, swallowing all but the nearest shapes, a line of weary figures, half-bent beneath the weight of ice-stiff wolf carcasses. Each step crunches through a fresh crust only to sink into powder beneath; the drag-marks they leave behind vanish almost as soon as they form, devoured by swirling white. Somewhere above, limestone tors loom like shattered fangs, but the gale shows them only in flickers before the curtain snaps shut again.

Breath fogs thick and clings to lashes. Armor creaks under a new skin of rime. Frost-bright blood pearls on fur and leather alike, proof of the gully skirmish already fading into memory. No song of victory follows, only the muted clink of gear and a low, relentless moan of wind through stone.

An hour bleeds into the next; time becomes measured in shivers and the slow bite of cold that no cloak can turn aside. The blizzard grows bold, pelting sleet hard enough to sting the eyes, rattling the snares lashed to packs. Voices are lost unless shouted; even then, words die a pace away, leaving each traveler alone with their doubts.

At last the ground pitches upward. Through the storm the first "tooth" materializes: a pale monolith crusted in hoarfrost, twice a man’s height, its eroded surface gouged by ages of wind-thrown grit. More stand beyond it in a broken crescent, but where the scout Kaelith should wait, there is only swirling snow.

Dismay settles in like fresh ice. Had he been delayed? Driven off? Worse?

For now, the ridge offers no answers, only sheltering eddies between stones and the promise of colder darkness to come.

RIGHT AFTER WOLF FIGHT:

Petra pockets her knife and shoulders her quarterstaff-and-bundle again.

She defers to Ulfr's expertise in finishing off the wolves, disappointed they must die but accepting Azote's logic for why---corruption, again, like that ice elemental they would have killed had they possessed the right tools for it. Like they'd killed the ambushers at the tavern.

What Azote has been trying to tell her about the war against Izrador with only two sides, and what is brutally necessary when those sides meet, to make oneself a weapon...it's all starting to sink in. Biting deeper than any icy wind.


"There is peace in a life on the river, among my people," Petra says wistfully, "but I think I begin to understand, Azote....that everywhere else is a battlefield."

She adds privately to herself, testing out some new thoughts, We are a warband. What my friends need most from me are the skills a warband needs.


They deal with the wolf carcasses efficiently without her. Small chance they can move unobtrusively now through the wintry lands, with bloodied bodies as cargo, but at least there's more warmth to go around.

Petra is dismayed not to find the scout Kaelith waiting at the rendezvous point. She begins scouring the ground for tracks or signs of disturbance or that someone was recently here.

"There's some conjecture on whether these animals are the result of corruption," he points out. She summons Tork back who hasn't flown far back to her safe clutches.

The scout has all Azote's green eyes upon him. She can't help herself as she watches his manner of movement and how he holds himself. As Azote isn't the most trusting sole. She looks for the slightest hint of deception since he is new to her. She feels some unease seeing an elf.

Azote's remembrance of slaughter is painful to hear about, but of course far more painful to bear. Petra touches the elf's arm in sympathy.

Petra's oma told her once that if elves seem moody it is because sometimes for them the distant past is as fresh as the present. The dwarrow does not think this is unique to elves, however.

Petra is so in awe of the Erunsil elven scout that she bows to him. She would return his peaceable 'knife presentation' greeting but she's afraid she'll mess it up somehow and offend him.

Bobbing her head in agreement and thanks for the shelter and help he offers, she trails after the elf with the rest of her friends.

Jagged pillars loom, overseeing breath sheltered in a howling void.
Kaelith leads the troop away from the Teeth and in a few moments the frigid travelers find themselves at well-hidden wolves' den. The narrow earthen crawl slopes down five paces and opens into a low, oval chamber, the abandoned lair of a dire wolf. Frost still rims scattered bones, yet the bite of the gale stops short at the entrance. At the chamber’s heart, a fist-sized hearthstone glows dull amber, its warmth spilling across packed soil and rough walls until breath no longer steams. Here the cold hazard of the march relents; no sleet finds purchase, and the air carries a faint, resin-sweet scent.

Inside, Kaelith dips his head toward Azote, voice lowered to the cadence of High Elven, "Elen sila na Aradil, ken-quessir."

A rare half-smile ghosts his features. He turns the same mute respect upon Jasir, eyes narrowing in good-natured appraisal before another quiet phrase parts his lips, "Lle quena sai quorin, edan. im uuma auta adatt quena i’lambe."

Space is tight: backs brush ceiling roots, and gear must be stacked in tidy rows, yet everyone fits with room enough to sit or crouch about the hearth-stone’s glow. Outside, the snow redoubles, the den’s hide flap snapping like a muted drum; within, only the pop of cooling stone answers.

Kaelith settles on one knee beside the hearth-stone, cloak pooling in the dust, "You made it. I was not sure you would." He draws a slow breath and continues in Norther, "First, understand this: our path leads to the Dolmen of New-Dawn, not the Dolmen of Stars." He lets the words settle like falling snow before adding, "Now, ask your questions."

Jasir offers a helpless shrug of his shoulders and switches seamlessly into Norther, "It is increasingly difficult to find chance to practice the tongue of the Eldar, but it stems not from lack of desire," he says before glancing over at the others and giving a quick translation of what has been said so far. The warmth of the cave seems to quicken the Sarcosan's wits and he moves to remove his headwrap while dropping his pack.

"I can translate should there be a need-..." he adds while moving to retrieve his oilskin wrapped lorebook. "-and shall take notation."

Varin stumbles straight toward the hearth, his joints stiff and gait uneven from the cold. Without a word, he drops to the floor beside the fire, sitting far too close to the flames. He rips off his damp gloves and boots, holding his raw, reddened hands out toward the heat.

"Give us a chance to break the ice in our bones," he mutters through chattering teeth, "and wake up our frostbitten brains."

He leans forward, letting the heat wash over him as he rotates his hands and feet, thawing each frozen extremity one by one. Steam rises from his damp clothes, and despite the risk of burns, he doesn’t budge—just closes his eyes and breathes deeply, soaking in every bit of warmth like a dying man.

Kaelith’s gaze flicks to Jasir’s lorebook, "Write what you will, scholar." A terse nod follows. "Lasta quetien."

Noticing Varin crouched too near the glow, he murmurs, "Careful, a hearthstone sears as quickly as it warms." A waterskin slides across the packed soil. "Drink, then shift back. Unless you prefer burns to frostbite."

Settling beside the amber stone, he addresses the room, "I shall continue to wait."

In High Elven, "The warmth of this shelter is of great wealth. We have wolf meat with us to share." and repeats it in Erenlander.

His gaze flicks to the wolf carcasses, "Your meat is welcome. The stone will cook it. I can prepare it if you wish."

" As she of course must agree although for the last many decades she hasn't spoken High Elven besides today. She doesn't mention that she has no idea of Northern Language and is only guessing that is it.

"It would be a treat to us to savor your skills with the wolf meat." as Azote hopes that he has spices as she rather not have goodberry. Real meat sounds so good. She seldom receives such. And if he prepares it in a more traditional way then it has been many decades since she has had it that way as she hasn't been in Elven lands for decades.

Kaelith produces a small knife and goes to work, slicing a hind-quarter from the carcass with precise, silent strokes. A small horn of grey salt appears from his pouch; he rubs the crystals into the meat, then drives two iron skewers into the packed soil so the wolf-flesh can slow-roast beside the amber glow of the hearth-stone. Throughout, his eyes flick between blade and company.

"Erenlander naa lambe-mongril; ni quena ten’na úvë, ar esta úvë úvë." He salts another strip, sets it to warm, and adds without looking up.

"Besides, Norther carries meaning well; I can see in your faces that you follow. I need no other tongue." He says flatly.

Between sentences he turns the skewers, testing the surface with a gloved thumb. Rich aroma begins to fill the den.

"What is the Dolmen of New Dawn? And what dangers and assistance if any should we expect to find there?"

Kaelith turns a wolf-haunch, fat hissing against the hearth-stone, then answers Petra in curt Norther, "The Dolmen of New-Dawn is an old Elthedar dawn-ring: obsidian stones, three pillars that ‘sing’ when the moon stands right." A fleck of salt taps the glowing meat as he speaks, "Few know it exists. Expect no allies, only silence and whatever the pillars wake."

He threads another strip on a skewer before adding, voice low, "If I knew the dangers, I would walk there alone. I do not, which is why I asked for swords and spells."

With that he tests the sear, rips a bite-sized corner free, and hands the first cooked piece to Varin without looking up, eyes still on the remaining meat.

Jasir stretches his hand out towards the hearthstone and settles himself beginning to quickly scribble in a short, yet precise shorthand. Much as Kaelith observes his eyes flick towards the Snow Elf as if to acknowledge the his statement regarding understanding. He sticks to Norther, given the reaction"Speak as you will. Your meaning shall be understood."

"Can you describe the path you would take to the Dolmen of New-Dawn? Using general landmarks and distances," he asks while writing. He starts to include a general drawing of the three obsidian stones and a vague depiction drawn from any knowledge he might have of a dawn-ring.

In the sing song of Norther "We were told that song is tied to our journey. Songs sung, darkness undone, shadow shatters, sickness stilled, bellicose blade lends light to life."

He helps dole out meat from the wolves, and attempts to brain tan the skins in the meantime.

Kaelith turns a skewer, wolf-fat hissing on the hot stone, then answers Jasir in clipped Norther, "At dawn we leave the Teeth, sunrise to our right. Five leagues across the frost-spur ridge to a shattered ironwood stump. From there we drop into Cairn-Hollow, cross its iced creek, and climb the far bank."

He hands a steaming strip to Jasir, then meets Ulfr’s eye, "Make camp in the broken cairns by dusk. Step lightly while there; echoes linger there longer than tracks. One more ridge next morning delivers us to the dolmen valley before noon."

A glance to Úlfr, "I have stood at those pillars three times. They hum when touched, but they do not sing. They offer naught but vibrations. Songs are a rarity in these lands now, the Dark God would abide nothing less."

He begins passing out cooked pieces in earnest, while Ulfr helps monitor the rest of the cooking Wolf.

Kaelith remains crouched the hearthstone and momentarily observes Ulfr’s spread wolf-skins, knife still wet with grease.

"Edge of the blade, not the point, scrape the flesh while it’s warm.", A quick demonstration peels a membrane clean in one stroke.

He flips a hide, salts it with a thin, even haze, "Salt comes after scraping, just enough to dull the rot." A glance to the glowing stone, "Hang it hand-span above the hearthstone; the heat here is steady, no flame to scorch."

From a pouch he produces a waxed packet of pulverised wolf brain, "When the hide feels like damp suede, work this in. Brain oils soften the fiber, fold, pull, breathe. Smoke it last; low smoke, two watches, you will need a fire for that though."

He returns to the skewers, turning meat with practiced flicks, "Do it right, hide bends like cloth and won’t freeze stiff."

Once the feeling returns to his fingers and the sting of frostbite begins to dull, Varin pulls his gloves back on and pushes himself to his feet with a grunt. Still aching from the cold, he makes his way to the mouth of the cave.

Snow crunches under his boots as he settles near the entrance, arms crossed, sharp eyes scanning the icy horizon. He stays half-hidden in the shadows, making sure nothing creeps up on them while the others speak quietly behind him. His breath curls in the cold air as he keeps his silent vigil—alert, tense, and ready.

Kaelith pauses at the hiss of wind through the entrance and sees Varin posted there, "Varin, leave the storm its shadows, no man or beast would be fool enough to brave this storm searching for secrets. Come sit by hearthstone." He glances at the faces sitting by the hearthstone expectantly before lifting a crackling strip of wolf in quiet invitation, "I roam too far north to meet Luiniel often; share the warmth while it lasts."

Jasir performs an awkward, but very human, fumble with his lorebook and quill when Kaelith moves to hands off a wolf skewer. He lands the lorebook off to the side and bows his head slightly. "Hannon le, Kaelith," he says, the thanks likely needing little translation.

He blows on the sizzling wolf-skewer while looking at his notation out of the corner of his eyes. "Do you believe the storm will relent, or must we suffer its bitter fury for the entirety of our journey overland?" While his pen adds another few quiet scritches onto his book, the Sarcosan's scorpion descends to warm itself nearer the hearthstone and be fed a small fiber of wolf meat.

Jasir seems content to settle in for some much needed rest and settles pieces of his kit where it can be readily retrieved for a quick departure in the morning.

Úlfr works on the tanning after the meat and bone has been cut from the hides. "These skins won't keep long even in the cold." He says as he cracks the skull of the dire wolf open. "Ma always said that the brain of an animal always held enough liquid to tan it's hide, though." The smell is pretty bad.

Brain tanning notoriously smells worse than normal tanning which notoriously smells bad. But on the bright side, it isn't the smell of death and rot...

Welp... I had a feeling I'd fail this one. No rocks involved lol.

The dwarrow takes the hand of any of her companions who accept, to let the roots of pure life energy transfer from her palm to theirs.

Ulfr had 6 nonlethal cold damage, that is guaranteed healed with a cure mod so I will not roll it, only mark the spell energy off. (1 point, 3 total spent)

Azote had 19 damage, Petra healed 18 of it, and can deal with the final 1 point through cantrip Cure Minor for 1 point?

Petra rolled 14 on her roll for Varin he declined earlier...
And he has 22 cold nonlethal damage. Happy to keep that roll and add another casting of Cure Light, the 8 rolled? (1 point, but if earlier casting was level 2 then new total 6 spent)

Jasir and Petra had 11 nonlethal cold each. Happy to cast on each of them with new rolls 13 and 10 and use Cure Minor for rest? (8 spent if twice on Varin, 6 otherwise)

Selah had nonlethal cold, one of my rolled castings in this post could heal that exactly? (burn 1 point of con and gain 1 free point from new Feat Blood Channeler)

FROZEN BARRENS | MARCH OF SNOW & ECHOES | PALE DAWN
Cold air holds its breath as new tracks press north.
Morning breaks clear and still. The gale has spent itself; only a light hush of drifting snow follows you out of the wolf's den. Packs cinched and limbs limbered after a full night’s untroubled rest, the party finds Kaelith already tracing faint ridgeline markers with a gloved fingertip.

After brief pleasantries, they set off at an easy march. The route angles north-north-west toward the distant rise of Cairn Ridge, stone markers once sacred, now tainted by the shadow's influence.
