Aanbo tries to distract the snake with his staff, circling the end in the air to draw the serpent's attention so that Ember has a better strike.
OOC:
Help action for Ember, to allow Advantage on the attack and possible sneak attack.

Round three, completed

Ember tries to riposte against the snake's strike, but in so doing, she pulls the blade free of its coils and the injured snake is able to flop out of the way of her dancing weapon.

Aanbo whirls his staff in a visually complicated pattern, moving it so fast it makes a disorienting whirling sound.

The snake's attention is drawn to the sight and sound and while its focus is on Ember's blade and Aanbo's staff, Chase lops its head off.
The mudviper takes 9 piercing damage and dies.

Aanbo, Arya, Chase, Ember, Morton, and Myrtha each gain 20 XP.

After a tense moment, Arya realizes that the danger is past. "It is a shame to kill such a creature," the young Mother Arkon opines. "But what was it doing down here?"
OOC:
As Lyrel finishes her ritual, is there anything else anyone wants to do in this chamber?

No one answers Arya. Everyone stands around, watching Lyrel continue her ritual in silence. At last, she completes the complicated song and dance that effectuates the spell.

Lyrel views her new companions with fresh eyes. The spear that Myrtha holds is obviously magical, as is Chase's dark black armor and something in Theran's pack. Nothing in or around the corpse of the mudviper is magical.
OOC:
Lyra's Detect Magic lasts for 10 minutes. It is blocked by dirt, so scanning anything beyond the immediate area requires moving around.

Nothing here is enchanted. I will retrace our path to see if we missed something. Then she goes back the same way they walked

"We must have," Theran agrees. "That room with the odd statue perhaps? Should... should we take the snake --" Theran gestures at the dead viper "-- to the snake?"

"We might have to consider that these tunnels were just meant to keep those hungry creatures, to dispose of those who opposed the cult," says Aanbo. "Perhaps they never led to the temple, and the kidnappers just took their captives overland in the dark."

He follows Theran to the dead snake. "If we think it will trigger some kind of reaction, it's not a bad idea. So long as we're prepared to handle that reaction, whatever it is." Aanbo gathers the serpent, amazed at its size considering the environment, and follows Lyrel and others who intend to return to the cavern with the statue.

"It could be entirely coincidental I suppose, but the fact the only thing we ran into down here other than the undead was a big snake, when there is a big snake statue in the same tunnels..." Theran's voice trails off and he shrugs.

"Also, I still think these tunnels lead somewhere, and if that's true it means we missed something.

"We still have other branches to check out yet."

As Lyrel leaves, scanning the tunnel with her enhanced vision as she returns to the chamber with the statue, the others discuss what the presence of the snake means. Aanbo tries to heft the snake by himself; he hadn't realized quite how large it was when it was attacking him. Now that he tries to lift it, the monk realizes that the snake's corpse is at least eight paces long. It is too large for one person to carry, and in order to fit through the narrow spaces and not get stuck, at least two others will need to help.

Arya agrees with Chase, the graceful holy woman's flawless skin shivering with goosebumps now that the righteous fighting is over. "There are definitely paths we have not followed." Her delicate hands tighten on the handles of the torch and warhammer she bears: there might be more abominable undead to smite. She makes no move to sully her hands by handling the reptilian corpse.

Lyrel arrives back at the statue chamber by herself. While the statue is grotesquely beautiful, it bears no dweomer either.

"I will give you a hand Aanbo. Could we get the poison out of this thing? Could come in handy."
Aug 21, 2025 4:17 pm
"I can help out with that," Myrtha added. She was not sure that it would elicit any response from the statue, and she tended to agree with Morton that it might actually affect them negatively. But she would follow the team, whatever avenue they had decided to pursue.
Aug 21, 2025 5:46 pm
"Um, I might have something to capture the poison," says Aanbo, looking through his herbalism and healing kits for some kind of small vial or container. "But doesn't the snake have to be alive for us to do that? I actually don't know how people do it."

He stands. "How's this? We check out the rest of the passages in the event it leads somewhere. If they don't go anywhere, we try hauling the big snake to the statue."

Looking around for opinions to his suggested course of action, Aanbo adds, "Where's the fire-headed lady?"
Aug 21, 2025 5:51 pm
"Sounds like a better idea," Myrtha considered, having hesitated to start hauling the serpent’s carcass down these narrow, dangerous corridors.
Aug 21, 2025 10:39 pm
"Sounds good to me. Myrtha you taking the lead?" Chase will fall in behind after he after he secures the torch.
Aug 22, 2025 5:38 am
Realizing that the others aren't joining her, Lyrel turns around, retraces her steps, and meets the rest of the group just as Myrtha is leading them out of the mudviper's chamber. With the light of Chase's torch, the people in the front can see that there is a fork, with one path leading ahead to the left (back to the door leading into the secret cellar meeting room), and the other leading to the right (which turns sharply to the right and out of view after a few paces).

OOC:
With no posts for nearly three days, I'm just going to push the adventure forward...
Myrtha chooses a direction - right - and advances slowly to the bend in the passage, Chase close behind her with torch in hand. Aanbo notes that the passage descends slightly. Myrtha and Chase whirl around the corner, weapons ready...

...and there is nothing there more threatening than a very narrow passage where the buckling earth walls are pushing the braces toward each other. But the heroes can see a wider area on the other side, so Myrtha turns sideways and squeezes herself through, getting stuck only once. The rest of the party are not quite as burly as the Valorous Maiden, and they are able to shimmy through with less chance of getting stuck.

Everyone is able to fit in the larger space; the floor has descended enough that the ceiling is now 4 paces above you. Three tunnels slope upwards out of the room: the narrow one they just entered from the north, another one heading east (which quickly turns northeast), and the one heading south. There are two other paths that appear to be places where tunnels were started and then abandoned: one to the northeast, and one to the southeast.
Aug 25, 2025 9:01 am
"What were these built for?" the warrior woman speculated as she observed the new area. The unfinished tunnels, the spiraling paths and the lack of apparent destination. It all seemed rather non-functional as a means of traversing the village, stocking goods, or hiding or stealing people or cattle. It made no sense to Myrtha.
