Chapter 1: Petals Born on Spring

"Oh, you dare? Face my Sightless Death Revelation!"

Chimera does a kip-up to get her petalframe back on its feet before dashing towards the shamon with a burst of generated wind behind her. Once Homura unleashes her fiery fury, Chimera follows up by blasting past the shamon while it's off guard, using her speed to slice through the other arm with a spin of her scythe. How's that for coordination?

After finally taking out the shamon that had been hounding her, Shizuka let a breath and reviewed her petalframe's flashing indicators. It was still damaged from the last fight, and now she spent all her ammo (although it was worth it). Perhaps in the future she'd ask to get a smaller caliber gun so she could carry more ammo without increasing the Rooster's weight. For now, at least, she had a backup knife that could take out a few shamon.

Noticing that she didn't enable her mech's comms, she flipped a few toggle switches near the top of the cockpit and caught the tail-end of a radio message. She didn't remember any of the code names in the heat of the moment, but recognized Claude's voice and responded.

"This is, uh, Rooster. I only just got into my petalframe so I don't know what's going on either, although there are still a lot of shamon in the water."

The pain in her chest had come back, so Shizuka had to stop talking for a moment. The adrenaline was wearing off, so she was starting to feel all the damage that shamon had dealt to her before she reached the safety of the cockpit.

"I'd join up with you, but it looks like the shamon here all headed somewhere. Don't know what they are doing, but it can't be good. I will engage them before they reach their target!"

In the back of her mind, Shiuzka knew that the Koami Jinja Shrine was in that direction. It was an older shrine that was surrounded by even older trees, and the whole area survived the Second Great Demon War. It'd be a shame for the shine to get destroyed by shamon summoned by Homura-san's bad violin playing, so Shizuka put her petalframe into full throttle and took off.

Using her knowledge of Tokyo, she knew about a narrow part of the canal that she could jump with her mech. After making the jump she saw the Sunrise Flare shoot across the sky dramatically, making Shizuka jealous that she couldn't fly to her destination. Still, she made it to the small forest with enough time to cut off the water shamon that were stomping towards it.

"I won't let you destroy my city!"

Hitting a switch from within the cockpit, Shizuka's mech tossed out a smoke grenade. The grenade struck a shamon in the should with little effect, but it then exploded in a burst into a cloud of smoke. With the group of shamon surrounded in a blinding haze, Shizuka charged in with her mech's knife to take advantage of the momentary disorientation.

Abenanka heard Claude's message and without responding she tabbed her radio off. She wheeled the Yuki-Onna around as Shizuka finished off the one they'd been fighting and hurled herself after the remaining shamon. This entire thing had gotten out of hand, and more than anything she'd gotten annoyed that she hadn't had a moment to relax. She let out a breath and started whispering to herself under her breath.

She didn't care much for cities at the best of times, and right now she considered the shamon running loose far more dangerous. She pushed the Yuki-onna into a bounding lope, its bulk overturning gardens and smashing through walls she couldn't avoid on her trajectory. When she drew closer to one of the shamon she pulled Yuki-onna's claws in and rolled, knocking it's leg out from under it.

She reeled around, raised a claw as she pinned it's arm to the ground with a boot, and readied the finishing blow. Smoke obscured her vision and made her start in surprise before she got the chance.

Radio still off she groaned in frustration. "Gozen-san! Really?"

At a momentary stop of the fighting, with the maidens recovering and readapting, the shamon is able to walk some paces away, it seemed he tried to reach the antique store, his menstruous face contorted in anger and... Something more.

Claude comes and puts her Rose Verte on his way, combat renews. Claude is fighting defensively, merely gaining time, parrying and dodging the shamon's dreadful drill, with which he attacks with great speed and precision.

Their fight quickly turns into a stalemate, neither gaining the advantage, with the shamon trying to contour his way through her.

It's at this moment that the loud bursts of Sunrise Flare's jets can be heard, getting closer and closer.

When the monster turns to check that noise, it is already too late: the powerful firebird comes like a bomb, punctures his arm and yanks it off; it goes flying far away. It's flesh soft for the melting heat.

With a roar, the creature intends to retaliate with his drill, but can't quite do it: Chimera comes just as fast, from the ground, and spins her scythe at the raised arm, slicing through it cleanly, an another member goes flying, another roar of fury strikes them all.

Once disarmed and almost cornered, the monster turns his back and starts fleeing clumsily, stumbling on stuff on the road.
On the meanwhile, the canal was a scenario of destruction, with various sinking ships already, already with destroyed buildings on the margin.

Shizuka couldn't worry about that now though, as she tried to stop the three shamon trying to go further into her beloved city.

Jumping through the smokescreen, her rooster stabs one in the chest while it kicks another down to the water, slicing a deep cut on the third's body and then finalizing the one down.

At the opposite front, Abenanka fought the remaining shamon, securing what's left of the docks. After struggling against them, she's eventually cornered and overwhelmed, the frame suffers multiple attacks by whips from all sides.

When it finally bends the knee, one of the shamon is about to smash a small boat over it, when Shizuka comes in time and cuts through it with her knife, protecting Abenanka until she recovers and then, working together, both finish the remaining shamon on the canal.

It appeared to be over.

Seeing the shamon commander begin to run in the seconds both other Petalframes were recovering after their heavy attacks, Claude opted to seize the moment and switch to aggression once more, dashing with the aid of the Rose Verte's thrusters, and trying to line up a shot with a tethered thorn.

"Enemy commander retreating. Attempting pursuit," sent the team comms.
OOC:
Using Rose Verte 5M, which is reasonably well-suited for pursuit due to having Air-Dash Thrusters as well as Thorn and Tether Launchers, as well as being a Lightning Bruiser. This has been deemed to be a Parting Shot (p. 157).

Once Homura had sailed well out of the bounds of Nihombashi Ward, the massive phoenix surrounding her petalframe let out an echoing cry of victory before dissipating. Upon calming down, she noticed that she had a bird eye's view of the Imperial Palace.

She quickly turned her petalframe around and started to race back, following the trail of feather-like embers that fluttered on the wind and lit up the sky. She pushed herself and Sunrise Flare as much as she could to get back quickly, but that technique had taken quite a bit out of them both. As she neared Nihombashi once more, she saw the last few grunt shamons in the canal disappear on her radar. Nice, Shizuka! Homura smiled.

Her eyes widened upon hearing Claude over the comms. "It's still alive...!?" As if to further drive the point home, the boss shamon's energy signature pinged on the edge of her radar's range. Weakened, but still very much a threat. Homura gripped the control levers tight. She wanted to go after it and personally make sure it went back to the hell it came from, but the urge to check on the soldiers won out. Besides, she and Chimera had grievously injured it, so she figured Claude wouldn't have any trouble.

"Okay. Take care of it quickly," she replied. "Vice Captain Chimera, help her out if you can. I'm checking on the soldiers and cops." She brought Sunrise Flare down to where the soundwave attack had hit. Presumably they were already tending to their own, but she started to help out where she could anyway, prioritizing the more heavily injured.

She saw a soldier had gotten their legs pinned under an upturned armored car. Sunrise Flare approached wordlessly, clearing away the soldiers who were trying to the car. With one hand, the petalframe casually lifted the car enough for the trapped solider to be pulled out.

Meanwhile, Homura sent a message back to the Steel Petal Force. "We've finished off the shamons that appeared in Nihombashi. Besides the big one. It's trying to flee after we hurt it badly, but we are in pursuit. We're going to need our petalframes to be picked up soon. Also, requesting that the Mimoza Division sends medical services our way if they haven't already done so. We've got people who need help, fast!"
Aug 6, 2025 3:46 pm
Finishing blow? Chimera doesn't need to be told twice.

"Kukuku, try as you might, you can't outrun death..."

Doing her best mimicry of Claude's blink step (but perhaps falling short even with her mech's capabilities), Chimera dashes through the fleeing shamon. With a flourish that would be better suited for sheathing a sword than a scythe, Chimera stoically keeps her eyes forwards as the shamon (presumably) perishes after a beat.

"...you'll simply run out of breath."

All according to her grand vision (maybe?)!

Plunging into the smoke, Shizuka's petaframe moved like a whirlwind. She was more used to the smoke than the shamon, which was made clear by the way she sidestepped and countered their attacks. However, she didn't expect Abenanka to also be in the fray. She tried to reach out over the radio, but it seemed the Yuki-onna wasn't listening.

"Abenanka-san?! I didn't think you maidens knew how to fight up close like this!"

Yuki-onna's claws and Abenanka's grapping abilities were impressive, even if she had gotten herself surrounded by shamon she was grabbin' and stabbin' without hesitation. After taking out a handful of enemies, it seemed that others got wise and attacked her from mid-range with their vine-like whips. Finishing off a shamon, Rooster wrenched it's knife out of it's head then made a beeline for Abenanka's position.

Shizuka let out a battle cry as her petalframe stomped through the water, but from outside the mech you could really only hear a muffled yell.

"Uurah!!"

Slamming into one shamon to kick things off, she resumed her flurry of short-range attacks. Although, her mech's knife had been chipped and dulled after so many repeat uses. Taking quite a few hits herself, her mech had gotten sluggish. Still, the two managed to beat back all the shamon in the end.

Once everything was over, it seemed that Shizuka's pilot uniform had finally had enough of her reckless behavior and locked the petalframe down due to 'medical concerns'. The screens inside the cockpit flashed a red warning and the Rooster's limbs grinded to a halt while still in the water. Shizuka tried yanking on the controls a few more times before slumping back in her seat with a frustrated sigh. They had won the battle, but there was plenty of room for improvement when it came to coordination and synergizing their fighting styles.

Hearing that the largest shamon was still running away, Shizuka tilted her head back up to look at her radar screen. The fact that it was surprising in itself, but it could mean several different things. It could mean there was somewhere to run to, like secret base, but it also meant that it had some degree of intelligence. There could also be a trap or something, but that was unlikely since this attack didn't seem planned. Her tactical mind continued to think, but her body was telling her to give it a rest. After all, her petalframe was shut down and she intended to go on patrol later that night. She gave a response to the rest of the team to let them know that the canals were safe.

"There are no more in the canals, at least. Not sure where they were all coming from."

Even with both Chimera and Claude giving pursuit, both agile fighters, the shamon runs very fast among the labyrinthic city's buildings. After multiple turns and maneuvers leaving the endangered zone already, they can only catch a bright flash, the trail of purple blood suddenly ends, and there's no sign of the monster!

Everything they find are the crowds of the citizens walking around, doing their daily businesses, some already noticing the frames and retreating with caution. Those who were checking the sensors on their frames' displays would be surprised to notice how the huge signature just vanished in a second.
"Roger that, Captain Kusakabe! We're sending the transports and medical staff, good job you guys!" Homura hears from her radio, from a feminine voice.

On the meanwhile, the maidens help the soldiers and locals, clearing debris and transporting the wounded, with the unscathed soldiers and policemen also working for that goal.

If she were to go back to the plaza to check on the fire (which was dwindling) and the people there, Homura would be unpleasantly surprised to spot some scattered papers in a place whose memory makes her annoyed. It were photos of her! Her initial landing on the place, her saving the people and her less than dignified state on the fountain. From her experience, she could tell that those were failed shots: off-centered, blurry or suffering from bad lightning because of the flames and dust, maybe discarded in a hurry to make an escape.
After some minutes, multiple trucks reach the place, identifying as the Mimoza Division, ready to load the frames and bring anyone injured to a hospital.

With her cape flowing in the air with the help of the Eggshell Tulip's wind generators, Chimera remains stoically posed after her strike. Cool heroes don't look back—she repeats that mantra in her head as she resists the temptation to see her handiwork. Well, one look wouldn't hurt.

Mustering as much aloofness as she can in the gesture, Chimera turns around to see the shamon darting off and disappearing in a flash.

"Whaa—!? I swear I got it! Urgh, to escape from my clutches...what a powerful curse!"

Chimera shakes her fist in the air in a way that seems more like a tantrum than a ultimatum.

"I shall exact my revenge on you a thousand—no, a millionfold! Forever rue the day that you entered my sight! RUE IT!"

Pouting inside her cockpit, Chimera makes her way back to the antique shop to secure the violin so that she can summon the shamon later and kick its butt...once she gets Claude to teach her how to do the blink step correctly.

Moyreau says:

Claude stares at the screen in confusion.

They act like there wasn't even an attack nor alarm. This is odd. But I don't have the energy to get to the bottom of it now, there's still more to do.
Moyreau says:

Once Mimoza arrived, Claude drops off the frame in a safe hand-over spot, and proceeds to blink away to avoid being associated with the frame.

This whole unit is clearly going to become Polichinelle's Secret very soon. But for now, I have the best alibi of the squad: I have been seen with the law and order unit when this began, will be seen with them now after the end, and they seem inclined to cover for me.

And so the noble returns to the cops and helps out where possible. When the dust settles and the press approaches, Claude is ready for them.

"Ah, greetings, we meet again," begins the swashbuckler, and then proceeds to spin a tale of how the battle with the shamon went, praising the heroism of siblings in arms. Once it became clear that the story exhausted its appeal, Claude switched to a different topic.

"And now on a lighter note, last time I made a statement, I mentioned an artistic errand I was pursuing in the city, and now I can reveal more.

It is a theatrical play where we follow the story of Oriana, a luscious ingenue whose allure invited attentions of more dashing suitors than her heart can handle. Now, the ravishing knight Amadigi and his roguish rival Dardano are ready to cross wits and swords until dawn for the sake of winning her affection, their contest culminating in a daring duel. But that is not all! The handsome Amadigi has himself become the object of the restless longing by the dark enchantress Melissa, which makes her and Dardano situational allies. But of course this tangled storm of passion was not enough, and so others, such as the tender-hearted sorceress Urganda, join the fray, trying to have a say in how the affair will end.

Feast your eyes on this and other plays at the Imperial Café-Théâtre . . . soon!"

Abenanka sits in the cockpit of the Yuki-Onna, head tilted back and eyes closed. Sweat slicks her forehead, and strands of hair shaken loose from her braid stand out at every angle. She looks exhausted, and really not having slept in two days will have that effect on a person. More than that though she has to live in a world that wasn't hers repeatedly.

After a few seconds that felt like an eternity she flicks the radio on to listen to the post battle chatter. Most of it is celebrations or check ins, making sure the pilots are okay and they know where the rendezvous point is. She catches where she's supposed to be meeting the others, but doesn't bother moving her frame.

Not yet. A few more minutes alone sounds like a good reward.

After helping out the soldiers and police, Homura gently walked Sunrise Flare through the plaza, only to find the scattered photographs of her. No one else could be responsible but that nigh-suicidal cameraman she protected earlier.

What the hell...? There's no way he developed those photographs that fast! Unless... Was he using some new type of camera? She tried to remember any notable details about his camera, but she'd been caught up in the heat of battle. His camera model frankly hadn't been a priority, so it was a blur to her.

At any rate, she was glad his photographs seemed to have turned out poorly. She torched the scattered photos with small, controlled bursts of flame from Sunrise Flare's flamethrower. Then she continued on her way.
After entrusting Sunrise Flare to the Mimoza Division trucks, Homura returned to the antique shop as well, entering with Chimera. Her change in attire to her fine uniform might throw the old man for a loop. Even her messy hair and disheveled look gave off a 'perfectly imperfect' air.

"Hey, ojii-san! I'm back. You're still giving that violin to us, right?~ Don't worry, I'm not playing it again." She smiled winsomely as she approached the counter. Luckily for the ears of anyone present, it seemed she wasn't lying.

Really, she was curious what sort of spirit dwelled in the cursed violin, and what circumstances led to it. However, that was out of her area of expertise, and the events of today were a good reminder not to jump headlong into things she knew nothing about, lest she cause a small army of shamon to spontaneously materialize by accident.

She had to make up for this mayhem, and the best way to do that, at least to her, was to ease the spirit within so the violin would never hurt anyone ever again. But she didn't have the slightest idea of how to communicate with spirits. That was Abenanka's purview.

I'll ask her about it when I get a chance. Homura thought. But between her modeling, preparing for the play and her duty as a Blossom Maiden, she expected the coming days and weeks to be incredibly busy.

Shizuka was relieved to hear that her fellow pilots were safe and sound over the radio. There was some damage to the district, but it could all be rebuilt.

"We did pretty good for never fighting in a group before! I think I got in Abenanka-san's way, but I'll l get it right next time."

After she was fished out of the canal, Shizuka joined the group of other injured people being treated. After so many shamon attacks, the people of Tokyo seemed to bounce back quickly. That mindset was dangerous, however, as you never knew what the tricks the shamon had up their sleeve.

In the back of a medical truck, an annoyed nurse caught sight of Shizuka's arm bruises and ordered her to strip so they could make sure everything was treated. After some protest, the minor lacerations on Shizuka's front and back was bandaged. After a few invasive pokes, the nurse determined that several muscles were torn along with a cracked rib.

The nurse slapped one last parch into Shizuka's back, eliciting a short yelp from the pilot.

"You have to rest so everything can heal. No fights for a few weeks, got it?!"

"Eep! No more fighting shamon on foot, got it!"
