How do I get my posts to look par with others?

Be sure to read and follow the guidelines for our forums.

How does one get the nice looking posts around here? Neat, organized, with the little tags naming systems after the thread title having cool embedded images for recruitment posts, and so on?

I did look at the formatting guide, but it didn't really seem to go over some of this stuff, and quite frankly when I even attempt to do some of the formatting guide things, they don't even work.

I'd like to be a full member of the community that makes attractive posts that draw people into whatever content I produce,, and so far I think I'm failing because what I do is so rudimentary, while.there are masters of the platform that can do beautiful things with the platform.

For tags after thread titles, it can be done by attaching the thread to the game on its Game Details page - when you're editing Game Details, there is a special field near the bottom, the one with an url "https://gamersplane.com/forums/thread/". Just add the correct thread ID at the end, and it will add the tags based on what is on your Game Detail's page.

For the images, it's [img*] tag. You can see a button to insert an image above the field you're writing posts in, it's the the one with a mountain next to color picker. Or you can add images manually by writing this:
[img]add URL to the image here[/img]

What tags are you having problems with from the formatting guide? I'll be happy to help with those. :D

Edit: added screenshots for illustration, hope it helps!

F Around and Find Out

Lots of formatting options with that stylized F button.

I'll take this advice into consideration. Images were a bugaboo for me, as I see people flawlessly integrate pictures into their posts and I don't see how, unless they have the strangest imgur libraries ever, or something to that respect. I tried using image tags before and they failed miserably so I'm not sure what I did wrong, but to get cool images along with the sneaky boxes and the tags as well, that is the sort of post I'm aiming for especially the kind that can be seen from the forum, next to the thread title.

You can simply copy an image and paste it into a post. It will automatically upload it to GP's IMGUR site and post the link. Or as Flying indicated, use the image button above the quick reply box to link to an image somewhere on the net, or upload a file to Imgur from your device.

Perhaps you should try to add an image to your post here so we can tell you what you're doing wrong?

Also, tags next to thread titles can only be added through the way I indicated above - you can't really add them to a thread without connecting it to a game.

And I'm not sure what you mean with "the sneaky boxes", but if you mean this:
[ +- ] Text
then it's a [spoiler] tag. You can add it with a "+" button above the reply box. :D

PS: you can use Quote feature to look at the tags within posts made by other people, in case you'd like to learn by example how to do specific things you see in their posts.

I tried using image links from drivethru to show someone what books I was using, so I copied the image urls into the prompt as the image button asked for the url so, I gave urls, I wasn't sure what else to do. If copy and paste is an option, then I guess I can save the picture and just do that instead, which I think I know how to pull off.

The tags I was talking about was how people can indicate systems they're using before people even click on their post like D&D 5e, West Marches, stuff like that as indicators that are helpful and clean up a post well. It's like in red header text usually. I'm not sure how to do that but it appears next to the title of a post.

That red header stuff comes automatically from linking an existing game to the interest check as Flying indicated earlier.

Thanks for all the pointers, patience and help! I'm a slow study. Technically I should know stuff like this, but it's like mad surgeon overkill how I understand it from a coding standpoint, and then I can't read the site. I'm better with A.I. and machine code than funky web code, which is a weakness of mine, but I can just see it right there when I peel back the front end and it seems readable, but it doesn't deploy the way I want when multi-tasking. So many permissions errors and things missing errors (the more baffling errors, the database errors).

This sounds like you did it correctly, so perhaps the problem was with image urls themselves. Make sure they are actually linking to an image directly (like for example, you can't just use the share link for Google Drive images since it doesn't go to the image but to the site).
Also you can only add one link per tag, so for each image you need to add a new tag. If you were adding multiple, maybe that was the problem.
Here is a random book image from DriveThruRPG added using the tag and the url:
https://d1vzi28wh99zvq.cloudfront.net/images/23533/508839.webp
This is the code:
[img]https://d1vzi28wh99zvq.cloudfront.net/images/23533/508839.webp[/img]

Try using it as an example and add whatever book you were trying to before, maybe?

The instruction about the tags is in my first post in this thread, in case you missed the post. If you need any more details on it, just ask!

Hey, don't sell yourself short. Why would you know it if you never used it before (or don't use it often)? :P
In general, BBcode quickly gets easier with practice - just try using it in some practice game, experiment around with different tags.

Here is the image link I got from. DriveThru and it didn't post the image before. I tried copy.and paste and it didn't upload. So I'm not sure.

I think the image link you want is: https://d1vzi28wh99zvq.cloudfront.net/images/461/88652.jpg

To get it, go to the store page at the link you provided, click on the cover to get it bigger then right click and "Copy Image Link"

Bullseyepsa is correct, what you are using is an url of the page, not the image - follow his advice, it should work! You can also right-click on the image and use "Open image in new tab/window" and copy the link this way from the newly opened tab's address (if for some reason you don't want to use the first method).

A good way to see if you're using a correct link is to check if it has a valid extension at the end (.jpg, .png, etc.).
