Chapter 3.1: The Second Expedition

Jun 1, 2025 5:04 am
Buoyed by the unusual experience of an uninterrupted night's sleep, the Dungeon Busters were energized and set out on the second day of their trip through the Dim Forest. The Dungeon Busters note when they pass the path that leads to the Jarls' newly-abandoned house and continue onward. Chase forges ahead as usual, content and accustomed to solitude. The other three who've been to Orlane - Myrtha, Theran, and Aanbo - share details with their companions who haven't been there yet - Jonel, Morton, and Arya - as they continue hiking through the day. As the hours pass and miles are traversed, talk continues to planning on how to proceed into Orlane.

There isn't a solid consensus by the time the sun is setting, and they still haven't reached the place that Chase had selected for their next camp. As night falls and plunges the Dim into the dark, Chase lights a torch and waits for the party at the edge of Cecily's Road. Eventually he sees the group's light in the distance, and he waves them over. They proceed to the site and the Dungeon Busters drop their packs and stretch as Chase lights the set fire with his torch. Everyone other than Morton is keenly aware of Rosemary's absence, if only for her habit of always having wonderful food ready to eat. Since she's not here, they proceed to tuck into rations or magic berries...

"We're about three miles outside of Orlane," Chase confirms to the others as they spread out around the fire.

::It was supposed to be safe:: Ember thought to herself for the fiftieth time. Durgal had suggested that she lay low to get the heat off of her in Hookhill, so she'd headed west, into the Dim Forest and on to the obscure little village of Orlane, where no one knew her. Everything seemed fine at first, but then they'd come for her in the middle of the night. If she'd been a little bit more trusting, if she'd been a little more deeply asleep, they would've taken her unawares. As it was, she'd barely made it out the window and into the night. ::I don't know who they were, but they sure had a lot of stamina!:: she thought to herself. The cloaked figures had chased her as she left Orlane and kept right on after her into the forest.

Now, Ember was pretty sure she'd lost them...but she wasn't sure where she was herself. Strange noises from nocturnal animals and the fear that stealthy figures were sneaking up on her kept her moving in the darkness, feeling her way through the underbrush. She did her best to keep quiet, but it was slow going when she couldn't see her hand in front of her face.

So it was with great relief that Ember saw the campfire of the Dungeon Busters in the distance. Finally able to see, she snuck a little closer and started to observe the campers. As she watched them, she found herself relaxing: these were clearly not bounty hunters or assassins; they seem to be traveling adventurers settling down after a long day's march.

With great trepidation, Ember approaches the circle of light. She takes a deep, steadying breath, makes sure that her weapons are firmly sheathed, and then steps into the circle of firelight, arms spread wide. The girl is a human waif, of average height and build, probably no more than twenty winters old. Her red hair offsets her vibrant green eyes, and she wears an awkward smile. Her clothes are functional, but plain, of subdued colors. She wears leather armor and a rapier on her left hip. A leather backpack sports a length of hemp rope, and a shortbow is across her torso, the quiver at her side.

She approaches with arms wide, to show that she has no weapons drawn. "Ehr, hi. My name is Ember. Ember Heatherton. I've been wandering in the woods for what seems like hours, and I'm cold. Could I share your fire?"

Aanbo remains seated where he is, poking a twig into the aforementioned fire. "For hours, you say?" he says, meditating on the chosen words. "Where did you come from to find yourself lost in the Dim?"

The monk looks to Chase and Theran as he follows with a second question. "And your friends? Are they still out there, somewhere?" Aanbo is wary, as there has been far too many occurrences of ambush that he wonders if this young human is bait to get the group to lower their guard. No sense in being accusatory at first, of course, so the questioning is meant to gauge the threat level.

"My frien...? No, I'm alone. At least, I think I'm alone. These people in the village nearby were chasing me. They tried to take me in my sleep, but I think I managed to get away. At least, I hope I did." She glances over her shoulder as an owl hoots loudly. "I don't know why they tried to take me."
Jun 1, 2025 11:54 pm
"You came from Orlane, then?" Aanbo asks, as if learning about a person's hometown.
Jun 1, 2025 11:57 pm
"Most recently, yes. I arrived a short time ago from Hookhill."

Aanbo tips his head at an empty spot near the fire. "Have a seat, then," he says, and holds out a serving of rations in a small cloth. "Food, if you want."

The dwarf rises and dusts his bottom, while his bare feet knead the earth in thought. "You'll want to share your experiences with us, as we're headed there. It'd be good to understand what you witnessed and if you can remember who might have been involved." Aanbo looks to Myrtha and Arya to speak to the newcomer as he steps away from the fire.

"Chase,"
he says as he approaches the border warden, "let's take a walk and make sure our guest wasn't followed."

"Thank you for both your trust and your hospitality." she says, taking a seat. She takes the offered food without question, munching hungrily.

Jonel looks up from his book as the stranger walks into camp. He keeps a close eye on her while pretending to continue reading.

Chase nods to Aanbo "Yes, that sounds like a good idea. Also if there are some searching for the lass be on alert all." Chase can't for the life of him figure how she got by the perimeter he had set up. He will have to take a look at it when they return.

Theran doesn't reply, but when Aanbo mentions checking their perimeter Theran nods. He turns to the young woman and asks, "Are you injured?"
Jun 2, 2025 2:21 am
"I... no, I don't think so, aside from some scratches when I was running away."

- " If a girl could stumble upon our camp," Arya reasoned, " Probably less innocent could do the same. Camping in this region seems to invite trouble or meeting a lone stranger. " She reminded that's how she met Jonel for the first time.

Addressing the girl with gentle compassion, "My name is Mother Arkon; I am a daughter of Pelor, the Sun God. May His light bless you for escaping those poor, misguided souls."

Leaning forward, "You mentioned they tried to take you while you slept. Can you tell us who they were? Were they strangers, or did you recognize any of them?"
Jun 2, 2025 5:07 pm
"I did not recognize them, though I think they were townsfolk. If I hadn't been lying there awake, they might have taken me and done, gods know what." She shudders slightly.

"Don’t Forget to eat, Ember," the muscular woman in scale mail said, pointing at the rations Aanbo had set before the newcomer.

"The food in Orlane tends to be spiced with Buteo, and that herb will put most people to sleep. Deep sleep. Makes it easier for the villagers to take their prey…"

"Were you spending the night at one of their fine Inns? The Golden grain, perhaps? That’s where I ate tainted food that nearly cost my freedom; could’ve cost my life. Or was it the Slumbering serpent? Haven’t set foot in that one yet, but I’m afraid their cooking might be just as nasty.

Myrtha kept a level gaze directed at Ember. A rapier and light armor meant this was not a simple traveler. What was she, then? She looked from Ember to Theran, and back. "Im Myrtha, by the way."

Myrtha observes the woman intently but without aggression. She must be sensing all the tension in the air, but there’s no point in pushing her away.

Quiet Morton as he nibbles on his rations just states, "Endeavors in Orlane shall be complicated."

Ember eats timidly at first, but with growing ferocity with each passing moment. It is clear that she has not eaten for a while. Between bites, she answers Myrtha. "The Golden Grain sounds familiar. I think that was it. Why are they trying to take people? What do they do with them?"

Jonel closes his book and puts it away. He is all ears for the critical information.
