Will

Will’s blows came down fast and heavy, but the nimble warrior kept dancing just out of his reach. He dropped into a roll beneath the wooden blade and sprang up behind him on his final swing, drawing an impressed ‘woows’, and ‘ooohs’ from the crowd
OOC:
@WhiteDwarf : Will's opponent manages to miss him for....6 rounds straight. Give me a few more dice rolls. The knight's AC is 20, for reference, but he isn't anywhere nearly as strong as Will, and has a slighter reach, which means he has just as much trouble hitting Will.

Rolls

Blows from the nameless knight for first 3 rounds - (3d20)

(5710) = 22

Blows from the nameless knight for rounds 4-6 - (3d20)

(10711) = 28

"Take him, Will! You've got this!" Miyana shouts, temporarily forgetting her decorum.
Jul 22, 2025 6:37 pm
Undeterred and unwavering, Will swings his trusty longsword once again!

Rolls

Sword - Atk. - (1d20+4, 1d20+4, 1d20+4, 1d20+4, 1d20+4, 1d20+4)

In case we need more - (1d20+4, 1d20+4, 1d20+4, 1d20+4, 1d20+4, 1d20+4)

Will

The knight continued to dart out of Will's reach. The bout dragged on for far longer than any of the previous ones, and the crowd hang on to every move. Will managed to land a glancing hit to the knight's hip at last, and another one to his shoulder. He is only a pace away from winning the duel, as long as he can evade the knight's blows as well.
OOC:
Will's opponent manages to hit him twice as well, and unless Will can score another hit for rounds 10-12, the knight will win the match on the 12th round. You have 2, maybe 3, more attempts to try to hit him (initiative might matter a lot for the last round, so add it to your roll as well)

Rolls

nameless knight attacks for rounds 7-9 - (3d20)

(11189) = 38

nameless knight attacks for rounds 10-12 - (3d20)

(14816) = 38

initiative for last round - (1d6+3)

(4) + 3 = 7

Jul 22, 2025 7:13 pm
Will continues his performance-minded assault!

Rolls

Initiative - (1d20)

(1) = 1

Attack! - (1d20+4, 1d20+4, 1d20+4)

1d20+4 : (12) + 4 = 16

1d20+4 : (2) + 4 = 6

1d20+4 : (18) + 4 = 22

Oops wrong initiative die - (1d6)

(1) = 1

Boudica thanked the scholar an became thoughtful for a moment. She sighed and took a seat near the man and said, "I've had dealings with the Archaeological Society once before, actually. With one Darius Gilroy. He hired me and my associates to travel to what we eventually discovered was, arguably, the tomb of Halav himself. A spirit of one of the original Traladaran knights greeted us and challenged us to a series of trials, with which we struggled, truth be told. You see, the tomb was entirely overrun with goblins. Gilroy wanted us to kill them all, which I was not comfortable with--they were just living there, after all, and they did not attack us when we barged into their home. I was too focused on this being a holy site of my faith to realize that the goblins were part of the ghostly knight's test--one that I failed. Fortunately, one of my associates took up a relic and defeated the ghostly knight in combat, which was the culmination of the test. But we left the place as we found it, which incensed Gilroy to no end. I simply was not going to slaughter a village, even if it meant that I left a holy site of my faith unclean. So, now that I have had an experience related to the tomb of Halav, I seek to find some connection with Petra, whom I revere above all others. I was saddened to disappoint Gilroy so completely, but I am even more sad that I have not been able to gain the favor of Petra. But..." and she glanced at her staff, and said, "Maybe I have been blessed and I am being selfish to demand more. I do not know. So I seek answers wherever I can find them, including the scholarship of Thyatians. And once again I thank you for your graciousness."

She was being sincere, too. She had gone into the exchange a bit skeptical, given that her experience with Gilroy, but Bertram seemed to be authentic.

Bertram listened with initial curiosity, but as she continued, he grew more and more concerned. Finally, he raised a hand gently to stop her.
"Forgive me, but I must interrupt. The Archaeological Society’s membership is just over a hundred, and I know each of them personally. There is no ‘Darius Gilroy’ among us. There never has been."
OOC:
Boudica already suspected Darius was a 'foreign graverobber' when they first met [ref]. And thinking back, didn't he let something slip that he might be nothing more than a con man? [ref]

"The Guild’s library is at your disposal. I am looking forward to hearing from you soon"
OOC:
Unfortunately, you need to leave the next day, so Barns won’t have enough time in the library to study any spell. However, Edmund can arrange to gift him with a scroll or two, that he can study and transcribe during his journey. @WanderOne : Select 2 spells and add them to your spellbook.

The duel between Will and the nameless knight continued for a while longer. Both of you were equally matched, and your exchange continued to draw gasps from the crowd. It ended up being almost too close to call; the knight lunged at Will with a hasty strike, leaving himself open. Will’s counter came fast and struck true, but not before the knight’s blow crashed against his helmet. It was a razor-thin victory, and the crowd erupted in cheers for both of you once the Herald announced the winner.
OOC:
yes. It did actually come down to who won the initiative on the very last round, unfortunately.

The knight gives you a respectful bow before stepping up to join Miyama on the podium before the Duke, and the rest of the sitting nobles. The ruler of Karameikos is a tall man in his middle age. His red hair, as is his beard, is streaked with a bit white. His blue eyes are sharp, and cold, as he looks upon Miyana, and the knight who joined her on the podium. His wife sits next to him, an elegant woman with golden hair, and their sons on either side, dressed in their finest and sitting with perfect posture.

"Remove your helm, so we may look upon the champion of the melee"

The knight obeys. He, or, as it turned out – she, loosens the fastening and lifting the helmet free. A cascade of damp red curls falls down her back, and the crowd gasps all at once. Even the Duke looks shocked, his eyes widening slightly. He has already heard that a woman has won the archery contest, which was quite a surprise. Now it turns out that yet another one won the melee contest! Maybe he should take another look at the composition of his army, after today’s events.

"Your name?"

The Duke quickly motions to the officials beside him, who step forward with two golden brooches, each of them sitting on a deep purple velvet pillow. One if for Miyana, the champion of the bow, and one is for Thea, the warrior of the ring.
OOC:
@WhtKnt : Besides the gold brooches, which are valuable in their own right, Miyana will receive a fine bow, enchanted by the Magician's guild, and 2500 in gold

Boudica sighs, her shoulders dropping in disappointment. She nods and says, "Yes, that makes sense. He certainly wasn't a noble or honorable man. I had never had any interaction with the Society before then, however, so I was not sure if he was representative of your organization or not. I apologize for making the assumption. Well, the good news is, he did not get his looted archaeological goods. But...this presents us with an opportunity. The goblin clan that lives in the burial mound said they would accept a herd of sheep in exchange for access to the site. At the time, we had no such herd, and it was only the ire of the ghost that allowed us any access at all. if a group were to return with a herd of sheep, they might be able to gain access to the ancient site. it could be of great archaeological value!"

She smiles happily at the idea and adds, "And knowing that Gilroy is not a member of your organization makes me more comfortable agreeing to work with you. For I too seek to know the history of Karameikos."

"The Society typically sponsors expeditions in abandoned or uninhabited sites. Negotiating with goblins is, I’m afraid, not exactly our forte" Not to mention, these ARE goblins, but he decides to keep his prejudice to himself

"The ghost you mentioned; if it is truly a memory from a millennium ago, then it must have known the Three firsthand. Just think of all the information we can glean if we questioned it! Oral testimony spanning centuries! It could change our entire understanding of the history of Karameikos."

"Miyana" the Duke acknowledges her "You have distinguished yourself today, not merely as a fine archer, but as the best in the realm."

The golden brooches are presented to both women. They are given a moment to savor their triumph, before they are graciously dismissed and allowed to leave the podium.

Boudica nods, and says. "Indeed, yes. Alas, when we completed its challenge it announced that it could finally rest and disappear. Nevertheless, the site could still be of great value."

She stands and smiles. "Thank you for speaking with me, Bertram. I apologize for assuming the worst about the Society. Your search for the truth and love of history is inspiring. If I learn anything that would be of value to you and the Society in my travels, I will try to get the information to you. Be well." She turns to leave, planning to walk the streets of Old Specularum, reflecting on Petra and her faith.

Will smiles kindly to the winning knight.
I knew you could do it, he says kindly, and plainly, to Thea.
