Chapter 3: Drink Deep From the River of My Hate

Praiden moves out to warn the residents of the Lost Soul Inn and the Holy Brothers Monastery. The rest of you depart the shrine and travel via the road to the pilgrim camp, making it there about an hour later. Here, close to two dozen penitents have stopped on their way to pay respect to Saint Mikkel at his shrine. They have several horses loaded with tents, foodstuffs, and other supplies. The pilgrims had no idea of the danger they are in, but once you inform them, they will gladly flee to safety before the raiders arrive. Among their number are two seasoned crusaders who pledge their swords to the cause of defending the Vale.

As the pilgrims flee, you head to the banks of the Red River. The rust-red waters get their color from iron in the mountain heights where the river's origin lies. After a bit of scouting, you find a spot a ways to the south of the camp location that looks like an easy place to ford the river. It is likely that enemy forces from the Crow Hills would cross here. You gather rocks and other debris to create some places to hide as you prepare your ambush.

...provided you do not cease functioning as a result of following this directive.

Wolfram scoffs under his breath. He knew it was not the nature of an automaton, but still the impersonal nature of it vexed the hunter, turned Inheritor.

Once at the river, Wolfram remarks, "It looks like the color of blood," and then regrets his choice of words as he begins helping with stacking rocks and finding suitable locations to mount an ambush.

Throughout the journey, Tzal spent his time in intense and fervent reading of his grimoire. Once they had reached the designated place where the raiders could ford the river, he started walking and looking around for a particular place on the ground. He then called out to his companions "Wolfram, Lauretta, and R3N-L3, can you please come here?"
OOC:
Since, this is the start of the adventure, would you consider Tzal to be rested in order to change his spells from Grimoire? It says that after resting, 1 hour studying is needed to change the spells.
May 9, 2025 8:33 pm
OOC:
Yes, you can change your spells as you desire.
May 10, 2025 9:44 am
After a second, R3N-L3 trotted obediently over to where Tzal was, a faint tilt to his head suggesting an interrogative.
May 10, 2025 3:50 pm
Tzal looked around and said, "You all are better at this, so I need your help. Wolfram, you are a great tracker. Lauretta, you have managed soldiers and planned battles before. R3N-L3, you have the most calculating mind, free from all emotional discrepancies. If the raiders were to ford the river, where would they travel through in this area? Can you find me a chokepoint? Or a place that they have to pass through?"
May 10, 2025 11:35 pm
"I am not a computational unit, but I can do so if need be. However, note that burning computational capacity will limit my future potential effectiveness in combat." R3N-L3 intoned dispassionately, scanning up and down the riverbank.
OOC:
GM, is it possible to rest before combat, or do we expect them to arrive before a rest might complete?
May 11, 2025 1:23 am
OOC:
You're fairly certain there won't be time for a full rest before the raiders make their move.
May 11, 2025 2:38 am
"Well ... they can't cross where the water runs fast, or is too deep. If we find any sections that are slow and shallow enough, that will be where they will cross. We can set up ambush points in areas of cover there."
May 11, 2025 6:06 am
OOC:
If you'll rule it as possible, R3N-L3 would like to make an Int att check to calculate where the raiders will try to ford from, using Certain Outcome to act as if he'd rolled a nat 20 on the dice.
May 12, 2025 12:25 pm
OOC:
Sure! That will guarantee you're in the right spot for the ambush. :D
May 12, 2025 2:36 pm
"It's almost as if the land bleeds with us."

An agreeing nod was passed to Wolfram. The river's appearance lends a haunting air to the battles ahead. While helping the forces of the Vale prepare for their time to strike, Lauretta heeded Tzal's call and threw the forces a wave as she joined her close allies. Rocks, trenches, fallen logs, whatever will do.

"I'd say we could find a chokepoint. Used enough of them during my time as a soldier to find one here. So far, I'd say Wolfram has the right idea of it."
May 12, 2025 4:13 pm
Tzal moved towards the particular area that everyone suggested to be appropriate for the chokepoint. He turned to others and said, "Well, I will waterlog and turn this area into mud. It will be tactical to atleast slow them before they can ford the river." He then crouched and touched the ground with his hand as streams of water flowed from each of his fingers, flooding the area. "It's not much, but any advantage would be good."
OOC:
Using create water talent to convert a size 3 space on the ground into mud. It will become challenging terrain. Also, changing Fill the Lungs (expert) to get Thimblerig(novice) and Calamitous rust (Novice).

"Location confirmed to be the place the raiders will ford, according to 187,325 simulated attempts." R3N-L3 intoned, moving over to the spot in question and nodding once, eyes whirring as they looked out to the horizon. He seemed strangely certain of it, but he had been standing motionless for several minutes as he'd processed the wizard's request.

"Half of my excess computational capacity has been burnt. One more implementation of the Simulacrum available. I recommend combat simulations." R3N-L3 informed the others a half-second later, briefly walking into the water. Although he didn't seem particularly overheated, a considerable plume of steam rose from the water where he was submerged, before he emerged, armor dripping.
OOC:
Certain Outcome used to set the ambush location, 1 use left

Tzal nodded at R3N-L3, "Thanks for the help, R3N-L3. Let's prepare ourselves for the worst."

It seems that R3N-L3 has calculated the perfect position for your ambush. Even with the large force of soldiers, archers, and crusaders accompanying you, you manage to conceal your forces from view on the far side of the Red River. It likely won't stand up to careful scrutiny, but it should be enough to give you a few precious seconds of surprise to launch your ambush.

You don't have to wait very long. About half an hour after you settle in to wait, you can see a force of two dozen raiders descending from the hills to cross the river. Five lightly armed scouts lead the way, bows drawn and eyes alert. They fail to notice you lying in wait, and motion the rest of the group forward. The bulk of the enemy forces consist of wild-looking men and women with shields and hatchets, fifteen in all. Behind them come a pair of hulking brutes with battleaxes and shields, savage grins on their faces. And leading the group are a man and a woman in mail armor, all muscles and tattoos, holding enormous greataxes.

They are marching right into your trap...
OOC:
You are able to ambush the enemy group, so everybody may act now! The enemies will not get to act in the first round. You may choose how far away they are when you launch your attack, but they will notice you if you let them get within 12 yards.
May 14, 2025 4:00 pm
OOC:
I say we let them get as close as we can before they notice us. We want them within range to fire upon, but not so far out that they can easily get back out of range. So probably around 13-15 yards.
"We fire on the archers first. Once they're dead, just thin their ranks as best you can. Protect those holding the line."

Lauretta whispered to the ranged squadron. Crouched down amidst the rocks with a bow and arrow, memories of first joining the Red Banners flitted through her mind's eye. Training with them, it was immediately apparent to everyone but her that the bow and dagger she carried were ill-suited for the young woman. I was a damned terrible shot. They set her on the right path of using her stocky build to her advantage. It was only after joining the priesthood that she found it was easier to channel the forces of the heavens through her weapons than rely on her reflexes.

"Any moment now. Wait for my signal."

But her abilities with a bow were less important here than her abilities as a guiding leader. These bowmen weren't soldiers. They just happened to be the ones with bows in hand. They'd need the High One's blessings more than she did.

"Now, with the grace of god!"

The enchanting golden aura flooded out from the Preceptor as she unleashed her blessing. It clung to their arrows and calmed their fears. These heathens will receive the holy war they wanted.

Tzal eyed the raiding army from their defensive position. He wondered whether they would get lodged in the muddy terrain that he created. He expected that at least the hulking brutes would have a problem traversing the muddy area. Once one of the brutes came within the reach of his spells and archers started firing arrows, he created a flying jellyfish and sent it towards the brute.
OOC:
I don't know if it's a critical hit. If it is, then the target becomes held and poisoned. Wow! That's a damage roll.

Rolls

Will (Flying Jellyfish) - (1d20+4)

(17) + 4 = 21

damage roll - (5d6)

(12226) = 13

As Lauretta's magical arrows flew, and Tzal's jellyfish plowed through the air, Wolfram nocked an arrow and armed with the golden aura from Lauretta's god, he aimed into the enemy.
OOC:
Not sure if I can use both the trickery boon and Battle Blessing boon together. Just ignore one of them if I can't.

Rolls

Agility - (1d20+3)

(16) + 3 = 19

Agility Attack (1) - Damage - (1d6)

(5) = 5

Boon from trickery and damage - (1d6, 1d6)

1d6 : (5) = 5

1d6 : (3) = 3

Boon from Battle Blessing - (1d6)

(4) = 4

OOC:
You can use Trickery and Battle Blessing together, yes. The higher of the two was the 5, so your result 24. That's a critical, but I don't think Rogues or bows get any bonuses to crit. Something is off with your damage though. Even the smallest bow does 2d6 at base. Add Trickery and that's 3d6. Your bonus damage pool should be at 1d6 from Inheritor's level 3. That means a total of 4d6 added all together.
