"Maybe not in the best condition right now, but I can handle a longsword well," Almadel says, pointing to his own. "And if this plan doesn't work out well and one of us is in danger of dying, I have no compunction against using it on this were-creature." Unless anyone objects, he takes the other silver longsword, wincing at his injured side as he stoops to pick it up.

OOC:
Getting a blade silvered costs about 100gp, adjusted for blade size. A dagger is obviously cheaper than a great sword.
With Kuiper ahead following the tracks, you march along Hog Brook until about midday before the telltale sound of something large and heavy moving in the trees up ahead stops you in place. You get just enough time to prepare for contact, then the massive furry shape barrels out of the bushes. Although it roars a challenge at you, the signs of recent wounds on its body and the look in its eyes tell you it's not enraged or hungry, but rather hurt and confused, a sense of desperation in anything it does. As it clumsily throws it's full weight at Kuiper, the ranger ducks through it's claw swipes but can't evade the clasp of its jaws!
OOC:
Everyone gets to act, I'll have Caradoc act depending on your actions, but the default would be to throw a net. Anyone throwing a net needs to get within 10ft of the werebear and can add their Dex bonus to the ranged attack.

The werebear's attention shifts momentarily to Aldeera, but lots of shouting and some (intentionally very wide) swings from Kuiper manage to draw the focus back on the ranger. He pays for it dearly though, with another bite connecting, this time holding him in place long enough for the creature to slap him around with a paw strike.
OOC:
Wow, those are some unfortunate rolls on both ends! Had the werebear's attention stayed on Kuiper, he'd used his action to aid you and add a bonus to your next rolls. Also, if it'd turned its attention to anyone besides Aldeera, she'd have gotten a backstab bonus for her next action. As it stands, you can use an action to recover the nets and toss them again without any situational modifiers.

Devon swore as all of the nets missed and the bear tore into the ranger again. He considered going for the silver sword, but Kuiper would probably have disapproved. Pulling back the net, he threw it a second time...

but the net was completely tangled.

In a moment almost of poetic justice, it is Aldeera's net that manages to get the werebear all tangled up. Perhaps that moment of drawing its attention awakened something in her, or perhaps it was pure luck, but this first step does make things easier as the massive creature stops trying to attack Kuiper, who joins in the trapping efforts as he no longer needs to distract the target.
OOC:
With the werebear entangled and Kuiper assisting, you now only need a result of 14 to successfully entangle the werebear further. On top of that, Aldeera can benefit from her backstab bonus on her next attempt. I'm assuming Kuiper used one of the loose nets around, so I'm ruling it was Caradoc's; next round everyone can have a go and the cleric will just sulk in the background.

Aldeera maneuvers to where she can strike with surprise and brings the hilt of her weapon down hard on the creature's skull, hoping that the force will be enough to stun or render it unconscious.

Devon takes a moment to shake out the net and try again to entangle the bear...

he curses furiously at the net, as if it was the net's fault that he was incompetent at throwing it.

The nets fly once again and Almadel's seems to land just right, as it further tangles up the creature. Almost frantic, the bear thrashes about but its own struggles only serve to further tie it up until it collapses to the ground, panting and still.
OOC:
Combat over! You get 100XP each, modified for any individual XP bonuses your character might have.
Once the realization of the situation settles in and after a few breaths to calm yourselves down, Kuiper kneels by the trapped bear and talks to it, in an attempt to calm and pacify the terrified creature. It responds in a few sad grunts, which prompts the ranger to produce a potion from his belt and give part of it to the creature for a sip, as if feeding milk to a massive, furry baby. The bear then starts to breathe more regularly and easily, slowly accepting its situation.

Kuiper
"Thank you so much, all of you, for everything. I'm sorry we couldn't find any clues about the wizard's apprentice, but you risked life and limb when you didn't have to, against the orcs and to help Maxim here. And thank you for keeping your weapons to yourselves in this one, would have made things a lot more complicated. I believe we should help this young lad back to his home once he's in a position to travel again, but I'll make sure people in Haranshire here of your exploits. Anything I or my ranger bretheren can help you with, and Oleanne as well, I'm sure, we'll be happy to provide."

The warrior was breathing hard with a net which was more tangled up in a useless ball. He was frustrated at his inability to be useful at all and tossed the thing to the ground in disgust. Running his hands through his hair, he pulled out waterskin and took a long drink.

"So we wait until this young man returns to normal, escorting him back home. I know nothing of were-beasts, but what is to prevent this again?" he glanced at the ranger's wounds. "and what of you now? He got you pretty badly during that fight."
Aug 12, 2025 10:45 pm
Frustrated by his lack of skill with the net and looking for a way to make himself useful, Hanzel moves a bit closer to the entangled werebear and takes a look at him. Perhaps he can patch him up a bit.
