Able to clear his head of the mote’s influence, John shakes free, armor smoking, and delivers two quick slashes at the fiery mass. He sees the shadowy snakes but knows he must deal with his immediate threat first.

"The shadows! At the shrine!"
John yells, as he slashes at his assailant.

Des leaps from the tower to join the battle on the ground. He glides (flying ability) toward the center in pursuit of the dark serpents.

Not sure if this counts as a double move, or if he still has an attack action this round..?

John finishes off his swarm, clearing the town center of them. Alden and Cass also finish off one of the smoke serpents leaving the imediate area clear of targets. Des notes that half the archers continue to scann the village interior. The other half has turned to face outside and fire on additional threats.

The remaining mote swarms and smoke serpents continue to move through the buildings. From the ocasional shots from the watch tower archers and trails of smoke from fires started by the swarms it seem they are continuing towards the center.

Edrik Vale
Curse thes things. Those dark ones will be able to slip into any building to hide and those swarms can burn this place down. he orders one of the guards to stay with Lenna and Father Havel and the other to acompany him in hunting down the remaining invading creatures as Des descends to join the others.

Glancing up at the storm that continues to roil overhead he shakes his head before turning to face the adventurers present he asks Will you join me in clearing these things from our town or stay and guard the shrine?
Feb 12, 2025 2:34 pm
Alden wipes rain from his face, catching his breath as the last of the smoke dissipates from the defeated serpent. He glances at the burning rooftops, at the villagers fighting to save their homes, and then up at the storm, still churning in the sky. The shrine’s barrier is the only thing holding it back.

If it falls, everything falls.

He turns to Edrik, gripping his dagger tightly. "If the shrine fails, none of this will matter. I’ll stay and protect it."

Cass looks conflicted. "Well, I was told to guard the shrine... Maybe I will patrol around its area, but not stray too far, in case it comes under attack."
Feb 12, 2025 5:26 pm
Des, noting that Alden and Cass are guarding the shrine, turns to Edrik and says in his gravely voice "I will assist with clearing the buildings."

John regroups with everyone, still blinking away spots of light from his encounter with the mote. As much as he wants to go clear out the town, Alden’s words ring true to him.

His mind also goes to the defenseless villagers that are in the barricaded buildings around the center of the town. He can’t help picturing his own family in that situation, the very thought stoking a fire in his chest.
He is fueled by the desire to protect the people of this town. John strikes his blade point down against the ground, the summoned flames climbing up the blade.

"The shrine is the focus, like he said." John gestures to Alden. "I will stay here, the people in the basements are relying on us." John finishes by looking around at the buildings they had barricaded.

Edrik Vale
Edrik nods in appreciation to Des and Cass. Thank you. As they are heading this way it will likely be easier to drive them here and crush them between those that remain and ourselves. But we must be quick as I would rather they not burn down the village making the shrine useless. I will start to the east. You two can start to the west.

Lenna casts a coupe blessings while you talk. One on Edrik's blade and the other on Cass's staff (advantage on next attack).

Father Havel
As the other head out to check the houses the priest calls to those that remain. We had best forewarn those that hide in the basements. With one creature made of smoke and the other igniting all it touches perhaps hiding in teh cellars will not save them.

A few columns of smoke scattered to either side of the village indicate where the flickering motes have set fires that are growing. Those towers with 3 men quickly send their third down to hellp combat the fire and creatures in town.
OOC:
Let me know your planed actions. Add tests to spot/find any of the creatures.

John hears the priest’s and Edrik’s reasoning, sobering his mind the the reality of the situation. He nods to the priest, "I’ll let them know of the danger.". Then he quickly runs to the buildings that the townsfolk have taken shelter in, to spread the word of the possibility of having to flee the cellars.

John runs to each building, banging on doors and windows to get the occupants attention to pass on the word. As he does a circuit he keeps an eye on the surrounding streets looking to catch sight of the shadows or motes.

Alden doesn’t hesitate. As soon as Father Havel speaks, he turns and moves swiftly in the opposite direction of John, darting from building to building. He pounds on doors, pressing his palm against the wood to reinforce his wards where he can.

"Stay alert! The creatures may slip inside—if you see smoke or hear anything moving, don’t stay trapped below!"

The rain continues to hammer down, mixing with the acrid scent of burning wood. As he rounds a corner, he catches a flicker of movement.

John and Alden move around the town center passing the information along while Des and Cass move outwards hunting the creatures. Between you and the townsfolk acting as guards in the towers and working with Edrik you manage to clear the village with minimal damage to it or it's people. The peril is when one of the smoke serpent manages to force it's way into the shrine only to have a quick call for aid by Father Havel be answered by John, Alden, with support from Lenna and the guard positioned there.

The storm passes and once the strange clouds have passed the vigil is kept for another hour before people return to their homes while you are taken to rest in the Hollow Hearth, which you learn serves for as the town tavern, Inn, and brewery. The inn is a warm and inviting establishment run by Merris and Gorvin Holtwheel, a friendly half-elf and her gruff but good-hearted husband. After a somewhat subdued but still celebratory repast you are all given a couple of rooms to rest in for the night.
OOC:
I think you guys have the gist of combat figured out so we can just wrap this up.
Everyone can advance their character adding either another Trait or Weapon Mastery. John already took mastery so just adds a Trait.
After a good nights rest you are again fed well and chat with each other, discussion your pasts and plans. Alden shares that he was sent here to investigate more about the ruins you saw around the valley. His commission is to investigate and see if any are more intact as there are records of this area having some importance during or before the Dawn War. Unfortunately other than some vague descriptions by a traveler passing through the area finding larger, more intact, structures deep in the woods and the hint from records before the Shattering there are no concrete details as to what you may find or where to look for it.

Cass takes in everything she sees around her like a sponge.
OOC:
Cass took the Perceptive trait. Do we raise HP or anything?
Feb 14, 2025 8:42 pm
OOC:
Not at this time, unless you take a trait
Tough: +2 HP
Diehard: once per day when you drop to 0, or less, HP you instead have HP set to 2.

John gladly talks with everyone after their victory. He tries to get acquainted with everyone and learn their names. If any of the group were interested to listen, he would also speak of his journey so far. Saying he is a blacksmith from a small town, leaving only to earn more money than he could make as an apprentice blacksmith.

John tells of his journey with a wizard into some ruins.
"We had to face off against the ghosts in the beginning, luckily my companion was a master of magic. He locked them in place after I distracted them. I then bypassed some magical doors, finding this blade and some fine tools. In the end I shattered a different magical blade, freeing the ghosts from their eternal watch." Tapping his armor as he reaches this part of the story. "They gave me this armor as a gift for freeing them."

When John finishes his story he would gladly listen to anyone else’s tales, listening attentively and asking questions. He is especially interested in Des and Cass, wondering what they are.

John would work on fixing up his armor in the morning, as well as sticking his blade in the hearth of the inn to recharge the blade’s flames. He eventually regroups with everyone and hears Alden’s quest. John nods after hearing the tale, "I wouldn’t mind joining you to aid in your search, if you want assistance?"
OOC:
I will take the defender trait.
Feb 15, 2025 3:30 pm
Alden listens intently to John’s tale, nodding along at the mention of magic and the ghosts. When John offers his assistance, Alden takes a moment to consider before giving a small, appreciative smile.

"I would be grateful for your help," he says, adjusting his cloak. "The search could take us far, and while I have my skills, I am no warrior. Having a strong blade beside me would be invaluable."
OOC:
I will take weapon mastery - dagger

John feels content at hearing Alden agree to have him along. His journey so far had been wild and full of mysteries in such a short period of time. He found that he enjoyed the new discoveries and colorful people he met. John begins whistling a tune, learned from his master at the smithy, while he thinks about the path ahead.

Des remains close to the group, tending to his equipment. He listens to the conversation, and during a moment of John's story, he pauses, grips the pendant around his neck. Back to his gear, he adjusts the string on his bow, and starts to modify some of the bulk arrows distributed by the townsfolk.

After hearing John's offer to continue traveling with Alden, Des gargles "I would join you on your quest, if you would have me."
OOC:
Des will add mastery in the short bow.
