Des growls "watch their speed! Fire at where they will be, not where they are!" He quickly knocks another arrow, aims at one of the swarms, and let's fly.

With a sharp breath, Alden thrusts his dagger forward, the motion snapping the gathered energy free. A ripple of force erupts from his outstretched hand, an invisible wave distorting the rain as it hurtles toward the swarm.

Magic Attack and, if necessary, Evade. Otherwise I just wait for my next round

OOC:
Ranged weapons require one Action to load, and one Action to fire. See full text HERE
This limit can be overcome with an additional trait, Quick Shot, which allows loading and firing in a single action.

I have extended this rule about slower ranged attacks to magic, though it is not explicitly stated in them, so as to balance magics might and versatility against more mundane attacks and abilities. See my notes HERE

John spies the glowing swarms of light cresting the walls. He prepares himself to attack, should any of those swarms make it to the square.

Cass backpedals to keep as much space as possible between her and the shadows. While she does so, she attunes to the natural world around her and calls forth spirits of earth and air to combat these shadows. Next round she instructs them to attack the nearest shadow!

When she gets a moment, Cass tries to glimpse what is creating the warm energy in the center, beyond the gate.

OOC:
Hm... question: would you consider giving me advantage if I use my flying skill to gain a strategic advantage? Happy to use a turn to "double-move," or something similar, to gain advantage on the next round.

Or (separately)... could I do something similar (flying skill) to call out strategic information to folks on the ground? Give them advantage?

OOC:
@Drgwen : Cass already had prepared a spirit so she can go ahead an Test her attack, then prepare another. Looking around is free but if you want to use Shaman spirit sense to gain other types of information in combat I will ask for an Action and Test.
@Dastuun : I am OK with Advantage being applied to "surprised" or targets that are unaware of combat. But like many combat functions in RPG it is assumed all targets are basically aware of their surroundings so just flying up would not work. It is very situational to gain Advantage. One of the simplest ways is through cooperative efforts. Ex mage cast an illusion to hide you and you attack from concealment with advantage. Or priest blesses you, etc. If you had Sneaky and used an action to hide first that could grant advantage. This keeps it balanced as all benefits have a cost, be it yours or another characters action granting Advantage. So you could try and coordinate with the other archers so that one sacrifices his actions to grant you advantage, etc. But these guys are currently relying more on volume than skill.

Acting as a scout for others would allow a sharing of information but this game tris to keep it simple so reduces most tactical advantages to basic combat only. So back attack, flanking, attack from above, all of these are just combat.
Note: after this scene plays out everyone will gain Weapon Mastery, which grants Advantage on attacks, or an their 3rd non-heritage Trait. I start all PC out as novices to any real combat or life threatening situation but with potential to grow quickly. I try to keep things simple in this game but have gotten the impression from several characters creation results that players are referring to the system material. Which is great but I do make some changes in how I run it. This resulted in some longer explanations than I would otherwise give.

Cass watches as a nearby nature spirit arises from the ground, its body shaped of crystals and minerals from deep below. It approaches the nearest shadow and begins to fight.

DM Highjacked this post due to post below being out of order
The party releases their attacks. Though these deal little damage it alerts the guards on the other towers to the strange smoke like snake things. All the towers let lose their arrows at the invading creatures. You see 7 swarms and at least 4 of the smoke snakes, two to either side

Edrik Vale
Edrik Calls to John Guard the shrine. I will attack the swarms. Men support us. The two guards with Edrik stand a bit behind him, waiting to attack.

Acolyte Lenna
The young acolyte softly whispers a prayer and touches Cass and Alden. Each feels the divine energies heighten their will and perception. Both have advantage on their next Test

Flickering Motes
the Swarms split up. A two continue firing on the towers, two more spread to either side and fire on things you can not see, but 3 continue straight towards the shrine and enter the town square but do not quite reach the shrine.
OOC:
This game keeps positional tracking simplified. Basically if someone is close, within 20', then you can attack them without expending an action for movement.
Update Edit : the swarms are close enough to engage in combat without using and action to move
smoke serpends
The dark serpents forms swim through the air toward the shrine. but are still halfway out.

Des takes a moment to pick an arrow he fashioned, rather than the clutch of arrows from the town. He draws slowly, aims at another swarm and fires.

Dres pierces another swarm. Between him and the other guards they eliminate the two swarms attacking the towers.
There are now only 5 swarms, 3 at the central square and to over the buildings to either side fighting something out of sight.
OOC:
In combat like this just remember that it is simple in that each side takes turns. I do not care about the order of player actions but you need to wait for the other side to act before you can go again.
Feb 9, 2025 3:31 am
John hears Edrik’s command, already heading towards the swarms that made their way to the town square. His blade leaves a trailing line of flame as he quickly dashes in between the swarms and the shrine.
The blade whooshes as he delivers powerful swipes of his blade at the first swarm.
OOC:
I’ll put two attacks, you can not count one if I had to use movement to reach the swarms.

Edrik Vale
Edrik slashes at the Flickering Motes while the two guards move to attack the dark smoke serpents. The guards on the wall shoot at the two motes still over the town as well as another smoke serpents that flits from building to building, evading the motes that pursue them.

Acolyte Lenna
With the enemy engages Lenna switches her support to the two guards with Edrik. John must Save each round be become confused, suffering disadvantage until Save succeeds. The sparks flare around both burning 1 damage each them and the dazzling strobing light nearly blinds them with its chaotic patterns.

Flickering Motes
One mote envelopes John and the other does the same to Edrik.
