It takes a surprisingly short time to learn about Skie - apparently it was obvious to some folk that she'd get caught up in one of Eldoth's schemes.

And who is this Eldoth Kron? A singer and poet, if you believe what he says about himself. An alcoholic, womanizer, and conman if you believe anyone who's met him. From what it sounds like, Skie's smitten with the man and would help him with some of his cons. But everyone who knows Eldoth can tell he doesn't care a whit about the girl, aside from the fact that she's helping to line his pockets with gold.

One tavern patron says he heard the two of them talking about a big score they planned to make soon, one that would let them retire together in another city.

"Worst of both options, Skie is in on it, but she is caught in the con. This will have to be handled carefully." Aiwë sighs. "We'd better go update the Silvershields."

Aiwe and Stella find the time to hit some of Baldur's Gates shops! They purchase a new spellbook, exotic inks, fancy quills, and a few other things, eventually ending up back at Sorcerous Sundries, the magic item shop run by Halbazzer Drin.
Jun 11, 2024 12:42 am
At some point during their excursions on the streets, Stella asks someone where to find Algernon's Shop in the Market District, then casts Locate Object while moving through the area, targeting Ossein the sentient weapon.

"Halbazzer said we could get a discount on his wares if we found Ossein for him," Stella explains, looking slightly worn out, but significantly better than when they left the meeting. "We could use the extra protections."

Algernon's Shop turns out to be a greenhouse, with all sorts of flowers and plants for sale. For all the fragrant aromas and delicate greenery, the shopkeeper is a rather surly, thuggish fellow who watches all customers with suspicion - not that there are many.

Moving around and through the large greenhouse, Stella doesn't sense Ossein's presence anywhere.

"You gonna buy somethin' or what?" the shopkeeper growls.
Jun 11, 2024 2:18 am
"Oh." Stella blinks. She hadn't meant to actually wander into the shop—the spell's 1000-foot range would have located the weapon if it were anywhere near this front—and wasn't masked against divination magic, of course. But something drew her in. "Perhaps. Just browsing."

She looks around for two things: first, any unique bobbles or symbols on the man or around the shop—anything that might be a sigil for Ravenscar's guild—and second, any flowers she knew from home.

They should probably just get Xzar and Moranton on this. "Real" work, they might call it.

Investigation - (1d20+5)

(20) + 5 = 25

Jun 11, 2024 3:24 am
In her perusal of the plants, Stella finds many familiar varieties of flower, as well as a few that she's read about, but never seen in person. She also happens to see a few stargazer lilies, like the ones at Candlekeep, or in her journal.

But the real discovery is when she notices the dirt. It's everywhere in the greenhouse, really, but in one far corner she finds signs that there is a trapdoor hidden beneath a layer of soil. Putting that knowledge together with what Halbazzer Drin told her about the Thieves' Guild, she's sure that the trapdoor must lead down into the city's sewer system.
Jun 11, 2024 4:07 am
Stella turns to the shopkeeper and points to the stargazer lilies. "I would like two of these, please," she says, pulling out her coin purse.

As the group exists, she gestures at one of the lilies she's holding and speaks a druidic word, as if casting a spell on it.
OOC:
Stella casts Find Familiar with Wild Companion
Nothing happens to the flower. Instead, Stella summons a spider inside the shop in a planter about 10 feet from the door. She sends it a mental image of the shop's layout and of the trap door's location. There's a trapdoor there. Stay out of sight, make your way over there, and see if you can find a gap to get inside, she tells it telepathically.

After they're outside, Stella murmurs to Aiwë and Dieter. "Trapdoor in the far left corner. Almost certainly a front for the thieves' guild. I sent my familiar to see if there's a gap it can squeeze into to explore inside. It may be a few minutes." She leads the group into a nearby shop to browse so she can remain in telepathic contact with her familiar and see through its eyes occasionally.
OOC:
Will use Cosmic Omen on the shopkeeper's Perception check, if applicable

A few minutes later, and the spider slips down into a crack in the trapdoor. Indeed, beneath is a vertical passage that goes down into the sewers, with mazelike shafts extending far beneath the city. It's likely that the Thieves' Guild is close by, but it may take a bit of time traversing the tunnels to find it (especially as a little spider).
Jun 11, 2024 4:27 am
"Lady of Mystery guide this one," she says in druidic.

Stella closes her two eyes to see through the spider's eight, looking for footprints or other signs of humanoid activity. Then, she instructs the spider to explore (following the signs if she finds any), planning to resummon the spider back to her in a few hours to get a report.

"This may be a good job for Xzar and Moranton," she tells Aiwë and Dieter as she opens her eyes. "Thoughts?"

"Hm?" Aiwë blinks and tears her blank stare at the lilies to look at Stella. "The Zhents? No, I don't trust them to do anything."

"Cloaks of protection for each of us, and an enhanced shield for Dieter, for the infiltration...we could get a new weapon for Koveras too," she says, face mostly impassive. She looks down at her flowers, tiny specs of teal and yellow appearing in her otherwise violet eye-stars.

"Is there another way you wanted to spend our time? It could be a while before the Dukes are ready for us to engage," she says, quietly. "I suppose we could focus on intel instead..."

After a few moments, sparks of green and yellow appear among her eyes.

"What about Viconia?" she asks, turning to Aiwë. "I mentioned this before, but now may be the time. We could ask Ida to Send to her and set up a meeting, then, with your help, I could dispel her geas. She might have invaluable information to help."

Aiwë nods as Stella lists through the items. "Those would be good purchases. Can we afford them at full price? Maybe the Dukes will advance us some pay. We've done a lot already after all. I just don't think right now is the best time to get into a tangle with a guild of thieves."

At the mention of Viconia, Aiwë clenches her jaw. "The geas was probably put on her by Rieltar." She nearly spits the man's name. "If either of us were powerful enough to meet him spell for spell this whole thing would be..." she trails off as she looks Stella in the eyes. Her face slowly shifts into a look of shock and hurt overlaid with utter bewilderment.

"Are you... lying to me?"

Stella's eyes widen and the stars within turn icy blue "What?! No, I—" She averts her eyes. "I know he's powerful, and Geas is a potent spell, but Ida or I still might be able to end it with enough attempts of Dispel Magic or Remove Curse..." She believes what's she's saying, but she tucks her arms in and folds them, obviously not telling everything.

By the shock and confusion on Aiwë's face, Stella might as well have struck her. She looks around like someone might be able to explain what is happening, but of course, only Stella can.

"I... Stella..." She pauses and takes a shaky breath. "Why?"

I'm terrible at this... At this point, there was no use trying to hide anything; Aiwë could read her.

Several eye-stars flash orange with frustration as tears well up in her eyes. "I—I'm sorry, I just—I didn't think you wouldn't let do it if I explained..." Her jaw clenches and her nose twitches, her insides like a wolf threatening to tear her up from within. She doesn't meet Aiwë's eyes.

"When I met Viconia in the Cloakwood, she offered to teach me. To hide from the stars. Quiet their visions. Magic from the Shadowfell, I think. I thought maybe she or Ossein could teach me. But she said I would need to change, to...abandon part of what makes me...me." She opens her mouth to say more, but hesitates, then looks up and shutters, baring her teeth in pain and the tears start to flow. "But Aiwë, I can't do this anymore!" she cries, likely drawing the attention of others in the shop.

She raises her hands in front of her and curls her fingers towards herself, like claws . "I can't live like this! I th-thought I was fine, that I was learning, that I could be strong, be a Hero," she says, as if pleading, "and I know you're always there for me, and I know this seems too far, but I still don't know what else to do." She quiets, "I'm a danger to everyone," she seethes.

The fire in her eyes slowly dies out, dimming to a defeated indigo. She clutches her arms over her stomach, turning away.

"I can't do it." she whispers after a moment. "I want to go home. For real this time."
Jun 12, 2024 10:23 pm
Aiwë closes her eyes and grits her teeth against the pain. "You don't know what else to do?" she sounds incredulous. "Everyone is always trying to help you, Stella. You have so many options. Xan just offered to take you to Evereska," she lowers her voice to a whisper. "The center of Elven culture and magic on the continent. To even know its name is an honour beyond words. Who knows the stars and magic better than the elves! But instead of talking about it you said 'no thank you' so you could immediately sneak behind our backs to ask a cleric of the evil goddess of darkness to induct you into her cult and wipe your memories for you?"

She throws her hands into the air. "Why do you feel like you need to hide and push yourself so hard? To save face? So people won't know you're barely hanging on? By the Seldarine!" Aiwë's curse to the side startles a shopper who came in close to try to hear the gossip. She scolds the shopper like it is she who has spurred this conversation. "If you all looked around yourself for a second you'd notice that everyone around you is in the same boat!" As the shopper scurries away Aiwë blows out a stream of air.

"You want to go home?" Her voice is quiet and soft as she repeats the question she's asked dozens of times since their terrible adventure began. "Let's go." She gestures towards the Silvershield manor, first stop to Icewind Dale. "I'm right behind you."

Stella's eyes, still closed, flick back and forth.

What about the war? All the people here? They needed—No. There were others. Dieter, Koveras, Ida, Runeson, maybe Sheemish...Even Xzar and Moranton. Perhaps they could find Caliope if she was still in the area too.

...What about Aldous?

She could return. After this was all over.

Stella hangs her head in shame, eyes reddened and dry now without any tears left to cry. She nods nearly imperceptibly, and heads for the door.
Jun 13, 2024 12:58 am
Dieter peers up from behind a display he had taken cover behind.

"Wait!" Dieter calls out. He instinctively ducks again but realizes the words came from him. He breaks cover and walks out into the open.

"Aiwë, how dare you talk to Stella like that, We are a team thick and thin.

Stella, apologize to Aiwë right now. I didn’t die so that we could be sitting here squabbling. We are heros and we have a greater purpose, it is beneath us to fight like this."
Dieter stands tall hoping not pull his team together.
Jun 13, 2024 1:09 am
Aiwë looks at Dieter, her eyes as hollow as her drum. "I will always dare to speak out for Stella's safety. I don't want an apology. I am not fighting or squabbling. I was... surprised. It doesn't matter. Stella makes the decisions, and I follow. If she wants to go home, I'll take her." She smiles reassuringly. "Don't worry, I'll come back to help with your sister, even if I miss all this Rieltar business."

Still standing in the doorway, she turns her head to look back towards Aiwë and Dieter from the side. "No, Deiter's right. I'm sorry Aiwë. You shouldn't have to deal with me and my nonsense. I'll find a way home. You can both stay and continue the mission." She turns to face forward again. "Whatever you'd like. I'll...talk with Xan after this is all over."

As Dieter starts to follow, she starts walking again and lets the door swing closed behind her.
Jun 13, 2024 2:19 am
She blinks at Stella's apology. That's what she is apologizing for?

"Our parents told me to take care of you. I'll escort you home no matter what."

Aiwë walks quietly behind Stella, just two steps behind and one to the right, like a perfect second in command. The tears on Stella's face rend her. But what can she say? Nothing she hasn't already. Nothing Stella will hear.

A dozen details run through her mind in preparation for their departure. Has Stella thought of—no. Maybe she should remind her about—no. Not anymore.

For Aiwë is good at telling stories. Stories to inspire, stories to soothe, stories to keep people going when it seems hard to. At the look of deception in Stella's eyes she was forced to cast her mind back through the last few months and beyond and saw for the first time how good she is at telling stories to herself.

One of her favourites is the one where she and Stella are cousins, sisters, with a bond beyond blood, and a trust stronger than the weave. With an empty heart and a wound on her soul, Aiwë stops telling it.
