Campaign log: Passage of Time

Apr 16, 2024 6:30 am
This is a log of what has happened in the campaign and when, as well as keeping track of how much time has passed.

Winter had turned into Spring when the campaign began, snows giving way to rain.
Part One
Day 1: Dugal Stonepick hires the party (Adran, Bramlin, Elowin, Gunter, Morik, and Princess) to act as guards for his caravan heading from Mara to Grayhaven. Dugal's caravan leaves, on the second day that the snow had melted enough for the passes to become navigable.
Day 2: As the caravan continues, Elowin meets Peony and gets 10 glimmerberries; the rest of the party deals with an owlbear.
Day 6: The caravan is waylaid by a band of 6 brigands.
Day 7: The party crosses the bridge across the Sowkalt River, formally entering the Greenwold.
Day 12: The party repairs a burned wagon after dealing with a pair of giant spiders.
Day 16: The party deals with Zik the goblin werewolf and his gang of bandits. Adran contracts lycanthropy, and collects a silver candlestick and a box engraved with Duke Draymore's seal. Elowin claims some money herself, and everyone in the party gets 6 krugerrands, 4 argents, and 460 bits each. Impressed, Findal Dinfizzle Findazzle hires the party to escort him to a meeting with his friend Tykus, a sage living in Grayhaven who has important information about a dangerous/powerful artifact.
Day 17: The party spends the night in Crosswell.
Part Two
Day 20: The party arrives at Grayhaven and are paid 25 suns each by a grateful Dugal. Princess and Gunter leave the party. Elysia and Eozindra join the party when the heroes rescue Argus Goldblood in a runaway carriage. Argus treats everyone to transportation into the High Street District and a wealthy dinner at the Bottomless Cup. After that respite, the party proceeds across the moonlit town to visit Tykus. On the way, they run into a Grayhaven courtier escorting a palanquin of drow dignitaries as they are attacked by a xenophobic mob. Elysia tries to discourage the mob; in gratitude the drow princess tosses her a spider ring. Ishi joins the party in the fray, and the party flees as Bramlin stays behind to prevent pursuit. The party arrives at Tykus' home, find it trashed, and a secret message from Tykus says that he is in hiding and will meet them later. They go to the Lucky Copper Inn, Tykus enters and gives them the map before being killed, Duke Dain Draymore arrives and captures Findal while the party does nothing. The party sleeps.
Day 21: The Duke returns to get Findal's accomplices, the party beats the Duke's guards down, races to the jail, and rescues Findal from drow assassins. The party goes back to the Inn, gets their stuff, and hides out in a tannery's basement for the day (long rest). For their two days' labor, Findal pays them each 10 krugerrands. He also interprets Tykus' map: it leads to an artifact hidden in an ancient abbey beneath the city. That night, the party heads out without Findal, does some quick shopping, and slips into the sewers to follow Tykus' map.
Part Three
Day 22: The party continues to make their way through the sewers. They travel for three hours and then rest for an hour after fighting an otyugh. They fight a rust monster, later swarms of starving rats, and after a total of eight more hours of navigating the underground passages, they meet a group of tiefling refugees in a catacomb on the way to the "Abbey" shown on the map. The tieflings tell them about the "Lord Mayor," leader of a band of murdering thieves. The party takes the opportunity to rest eight more hours (long rest). The party enters the Abbey, fights a carrion crawler, then a watery creature tries to drown Morik and a huge fight ensues with all the Lord Mayor's Men across several rooms. The Lord Mayor appears and draws upon his dark pact with the Dweller in the Dark Waters to battle the heroes. The heroes beat him down in a furious combat, ending with victory over the gang but Elowin's death. The party cleans up the mess and grieves. Restlessly poking around the Abbey, Morik stumbles across naked captive Faith, who has finally just freed herself from where she was bound. She was a friend of Eozindra's when they entered puberty, and Elysia was always jealous of her. Ishi gives her his cloak until the party finds her equipment in a storage room.
Day 23: After spending a few hours grieving (and catching Faith up on current events), the party has recovered/processed enough to take a long rest. Eight hours pass, during which time they cautiously investigate their surroundings. Faith detects magic in the Lord Mayor's staff and in four sarcophagi in a crypt which the robbers were using as a locked pantry. The party discovers a word puzzle carved into the wall of the storage room where Faith's gear was kept; uttering the word "Fall" caused the wall to...well, fall. Returning to the crypt, Ishi clears off the coffins, revealing text that describes the occupants as the Abbey's founders, and that the Abbey was created to protect the Greenwold from destruction. Adran, Eozindra, Faith, and Morik each take an abbot's robe, each of which strongly radiates abjuration magic. The party regroups and ventures into the dark corridor that was revealed by the disintegrating wall...there Faith, Eozindra, Morik, and Adran swore oaths to the Orb of Dragon Souls. Then they took the rest of the day to retrace their steps back to the tiefling refugees to visit and convince them that the threat is gone; they can now live in the Abbey. After resting there and visiting with the underground tiefling community, the party journeys on, back through several off-stage adventures in the sewers, finally emerging early on...
Part Four
Day 24: The party arrives back on the streets of Grayhaven in mid-morning (Elysia becomes Eir) during the Queen's Fair. They are joined by Woody, a very young elf friend of Morik and Eozindra. They discover that Findal narrowly escaped the Ducal guards, then they find and rescue him from being captured. Woody arranges for a safe house for the rest of the daylight hours. There, Findal translates the runes on the Orb of Dragon Souls, revealing that the Orb is sealed and will prevent its bearers (the party) from leaving the city until a ritual is performed with the Magister's Mace. The party leaves Findal to go find the Magister's Mace. In the marketplace, they are confronted by a griffon rider. She introduces herself as Lady Penelope, a Knight of the Spire, an agent dedicated to the good of the Greenwold. Lady Penelope gives the party a whistle that can be used to call her if they need help. Following leads, the party goes into the Highview neighborhood, where they steal the Magister's Mace from the dangerous Tanner's Guildmaster, Ushta Maclor. It turns out that the only one who can perform the ritual with the Magister's Mace is the Queen of Grayhaven, 11-year-old Sophia...who has just reinstated the Queen's Cup competition. The winners of the Cup will have their crimes forgiven and a private audience with the Queen, as well as getting a valuable trophy. The party takes a long rest in the Friendly House, neutral territory for a variety of criminal guilds and gangs.
Day 25: The party goes to Margaret's Plaza and wins the Queen's Cup. They report to the Royal Chapel for the Queen's Blessing but are ambushed by the Shroud, a cult of banshee-worshipping drow bent on claiming the Orb of Dragon Souls. After the heroes defeat the Shroud, they find a bunch of treasure: two vials, a wooden box, and a luxurious robe. Queen Sophia arrives, forgives the party's trespasses and blesses them with knighthoods (which also removes the geas preventing the oathsworn from leaving Grayhaven). Eir notices that the party is being observed, so she parts with her sister and leads the pursuing bounty hunters away while the remaining party rests for the night at the Golden Hart Inn before meeting with the Queen on the morrow.
Part Five
Day 26: The party is awakened in the middle of the night by the attack of dragons and their forces. Juniper joins the party in helping people escape. Morik Dominates a Wing Drake using the Orb of Dragon Souls, the party rescues a number of guests from the Golden Hart Inn, and they defeat looting monsters before the Inn burns to the ground. Adran turns into a werewolf and runs off into the night.
The others follow, leading a string of survivors, and arrive at a Chapel of Torht, where an ogre is trying to break into the building to squash some worshippers inside. Morik, Woody, and the werewolf fight the ogre while Eozindra, Faith, and Juniper rush in to help people escape the burning building. But once the ogre is dead, the werewolf runs away again, and both Morik and Juniper (who just emerged with a survivor) follow while Woody stays behind to help the others rescue survivors.
The werewolf, Morik, and Juniper run into a street where two Wing Drakes are trying to find Argus who is hiding in some rubble. Juniper uses her Moonbeam spell to get the werewolf to revert back to Adran and the group defeats the Wing Drakes just as the other heroes arrive with a train of survivors. In the process, they try to pull Argus out of the rubble but instead cause it to collapse on him, crushing their benefactor. Content to leave him there, the heroes say a few prayers and move on.
Eozindra gives her Abbot's Robe to naked Adran, and the party helps some elven bakers whose shop has been vandalized by looters. Morik and Faith save the building from collapse while the others fight off the looters. The bakers let everyone rest in their shop, then Adran runs back into the fire to find Mara while the rest of the party leads the crowd of survivors to find some place of safety.
Arriving at a makeshift fort that a number of Ducal guards built out of rubble, it seems like the party may be able to leave the survivors in good hands when a giant bat and wereboar charge in, killing one of the Ducal guards. The party defeats these monsters, and a Royal courier arrives with 2 greater healing potions, a potion of giant strength, and the news that the Royal Castle is both accepting refugees and is under attack. The heroes decide to avoid the fighting on the surface and take the indirect route to the Castle through the sewers.
Leading the blind-in-the-dark survivors through the sewers, the party stumbled across the drow Princess Celandine and her attendants, who were trying to flee the city, just as they were attacked by a chuul. During the fight, Eozindra contracted sewer plague, and one of the attendants revealed they were part of the Shroud by trying to assassinate Celandine. The party defeated the monster and killed the assassin, redoubling the gratitude that Celandine has for the heroes. She continued to the port; the heroes continued to the Castle.
Emerging from the sewers right by the Castle, they were met by Zaraz, the half-orc barbarian/druid acquaintance of both Woody and Eozindra, who was also looking to take refuge in the Royal Castle. The party avoided a big fight at the main gates and entered a side gate leading into a garden courtyard. There they found that a spell linked to two faerie dragons was keeping the castle doors sealed and summoning a flying snake every few seconds. After dealing with a bunch of illusions, the party defeated the snakes and the faerie dragons, which opened the way into the Castle at last.
Days 27-28: The full moon continues.
