2. The First Delve

"So..." Gabbro wipes the sweat of the painstaking search from his brow. "Which locked door will we bust open: the one there" (pointing to the west wall) "or one of the ones in the smelly room?" (to the west or the east). "Nobody found any more keys, right?"

As the group contemplates the doors Pickles counts out the Electrum and hands everyone eleven (11) pieces each and four (4) to Johann. As he gives Ricard his portion the Halfling smiles and simpleton says, "Here’s your chance to break something." He then points at the locked door.

Ricard nods and squares off with the smelly door. Once everyone is ready to rush in, he rears back and lets fly the boot...

Pickles watches as Ricard tenses in anticipation to smash stuff, namely the door, and the Halfling draws his trusty bow and arrow.

Ready.

OOC:
There's three locked doors. Which one are we trying to bust open?

OOC:
I believe the one in the west wall? The one not in the smelly room.

From a gameplay perspective, I don't believe you can force open a "locked" door in B/X / OSE.

There is a distinction between a "locked door" and a "stuck" door. A stuck door can be forced open. But a locked door needs a key, a successful thief lock picking roll, or magic.

OOC:
Of course.
Gabbro tries the key that they found in the storage room in the western door. Then, taking a deep breath, Gabbro enters the northern "smelly" room of filth and tries the key from the storage room in both the locked doors there.
OOC:
If the key doesn't work on any of these doors, we've got to go back to the desert room and try going north. That, or try knocking on the door to see if something answers...

OOC:
I am sure Pickles will have no problem knocking.
Aug 20, 2025 11:26 pm
OOC:
I'm not opposed to knocking
Aug 20, 2025 11:56 pm
Pickles waits to see if the key fits into either door first, then . . .
OOC:
Did we search the Goblins we killed?

Johann thanks Pickles for coins and slips them into his pouch.
Frustratingly, the key you found in the southern storage room doesn’t fit any of the locks. Therefore, Pickles skips from door to door, rapping briskly on each of them to see if he can elicit a response. All is quiet.

Aside from the (goblin-sized) leather armour, shields and weapons (short swords, 3 x crossbows), there is nothing of interest on the goblin bodies. The coins in their travel bundles were their only treasure.

"Well that was disappointing, what now?"
Aug 22, 2025 4:34 am
With no answer picks stamps his little foot in a huff, "Well this wasn’t fun at all, but at least we made some coin." Pickles adds a smile at the end, "Anyone got the time? If we have time shall we try the doors in the hallway between Maritime and statue of feet, then maybe the door opposite . . . " Pickles looks around before continuing in a hushed tone, "Our secret stashing place."

Gabbro considers. "Yes, I think you've got the right idea, Pickles. Let's check out those doors in that hallway, then we can decide where to go after that (such as heading north from the Desert Room or trying the door opposite the Dining Room)."

Secret Roll

With the locked doors proving a dead end in the Wolf Gang goblin territory, you retrace your steps towards the Chamber of the Sea and the unexplored doors beyond.

As you hoist the portcullis at the entrance to the Chamber of the Sea, you’re suddenly aware of movement overhead. An instant later, Ricard finds himself enveloped in an oozing green slime that falls from above the portcullis. His plate mail protects him from any immediate damage, but the metal of his armour starts to smoke as the corrosive slime degrades it.

We will move into combat rounds. No need to roll initiative … the Green Slime is simply going to continue to dissolve Ricard’s armour. What do you all do in round 1?

OOC:
I love those comic book ads, and how they're cyclical, so if you read them all, they effectively tell a story that loops back on themselves endlessly without beginning or end!
Aug 22, 2025 8:25 pm
"Take off your armor!" Gabbro yells at Ricard, stepping back as he's helpless without a burning light source. "Somebody with a torch - burn it! The slime!"
OOC:
Question 1: did the slime drop out of a secret compartment, the recess that holds the portcullis, or something else?
Question 2: is the portcullis also dissolving?
