"Oi Oi Oiii!" Sow shouts, trying -- and failing -- to keep time and tune with Cutwell. She's smiling too, though, and shoves the laughing Flint after Freki. "Go!" she grins. "Help him!"

Flint pretends to fall forward when Sow jokingly shoves him. "Alright, alright, don't get your knic.. ah never mind."

Glancing at Cutwell and Freki, he shakes his head in mock disbelief as he begins to climb down the ladder, dearly hoping that this isn't some kind of trap.

Two more fishmen emerge from the lodge with an awkward waddle. They are naked, except for leather bandoliers that have various pockets and satchels hanging from it, slung tight over one shoulder and across the chest. They are also chanting "OOOOI, OOOOI, OOOOI!"

The first one you met puts up its hands and shouts at you in a gurgling voice. "Cliffwalkers! No spar, no dratsing! We droog."

It lets the rusty knife fall from his hands, and it lands in the mud, tip first.

Cutwell nudges Freki with his elbow!

"You're the dog-whisperer, ain’t you? This is right up your street!" he says, delegating Freki as chief diplomat. Dogs and fish hardly spoke the same language, but it was certainly the same wheelhouse.

Resting her hands on the low wall of the watchtower, her sling tucked back away, Sow frowns slightly, though her cheeks still smart from grinning and laughing. "What do you think they are saying?" she asks Cutwell and Saffron. "No spar? No... dratsing?"
Apr 22, 2024 5:34 am
Freki nods to Cutwell and continues his dance. He places his shield on the ground, pulls out the darts from his belt and drops them on top and then uncoils the whip from his side and drops that on top of the pile.

"No spar, no dratsing," he repeats with his hand up and open, not fully sure what it means, but wonders if it means no weapons or fight or something like that because the creature dropped its weapon. "We droog!" he adds and moves forward to dance with the creature hoping he's catching their meaning.
Apr 22, 2024 5:18 pm
Flint is reluctant to dance with these strange creatures and he has no intention of removing his clothes despite his most excellent physique. The fish people don't appear to be a threat and he supposed that in the interests of keeping it that way he should probably dance too. He was usually in his cups when carrying on in such a silly manner, but it looked like this was one of those times when he'd have to act the fool, sober.

"No spar, no dratsing," he too repeats, followed by, "We droog!" He hoped the word droog meant dancing, as he twisted and turned in an approximation of some kind of dancing.

The fishmen clap their webbed hands and call out "OOOI OOO!" when Freki discards his weapons, and then gesture to Flint (and anyone else who has gathered on the ground level) to do the same.

"Cliffwalkers now droog!" one of them comments in their peculiar gurgling way. Pointing at you, he states "You Cliffwalker, ya?" and then pointing at himself he says "We Veck!"!

Another spies Flint's scabbarded sword and makes an excited sound. "Zammechat nosh! You trade nosh, droog?"

The third gurgles what seems to be a proposal: "Veck need nosh. Lots nosh. Oozhassny Beastmen! Always spar, always dratsing! Beastmen and Godmen!"

Saffron
Meanwhile, Saffron has decided to stay in the tower. She has made herself visible so as not to cause an alarm or suspicion, but she seems perturbed by the creatures. "Fish just shouldn't talk. Its ... unnatural," is how she puts it.
Apr 23, 2024 5:36 am
Sow is with Saffron, still in the watchtower, but she's listening carefully to the fish man -- the... veck? It sounds like they are enemies of the beast men that they saw in the night and that means... they might just be allies.

"What isn't, here?" the slim-shouldered, wiry young woman with the splintered voice says in response.

"Beastmen and Godmen, is it?" Cutwell wonders aloud, sure that he knew the first but less sure of the second. Could be them fellas that Thorn had been invited to spend time with. Did they seem like the type?

"What have they got to trade?" he calls to their diplomats to translate!

Flints wide smile narrows a little when it appears that the fishmen want to trade for his sword. "Oh no, not this," he says, shaking his head and crossing his arms to drive home his response.

"Do they mean weapons? Food? What's nosh? Seems like they definitely want to trade. Let's see what we can decipher from their odd language."

Flint throws in an "Oi, oi, oi," for good measure.

Fishman
The Fishmen seem disappointed about Flint's rejection. The speak among themselves for a bit, and then return with another offer. "Cliffwalkers follow!" they gurgle, and then begin walking back to the lodge. You note the one Fishman does pick up his knife from the ground on his way back, although he stabs it into the wooden wall of the lodg as they throw open the shutters to let in light, and let both sides of the double door swing wide open.

A strong smell of rot, fermentation, and death wafts out from the lodge, followed by the buzzing of insects. Within, you see half a dozen wooden crates, overflowing with some kind plant matter, arrayed near the entrance. The rest of the interior lies in shadow. The fishmen retreat into the shade of the lodge, and heft up a bundle of the plant matter from the crates. "Cliffwalkers viddy Black Lotus!"

Freki picks up his equipment from the ground and joins the fishmen in their lodge. The smell is overwhelming initially and he considers going back into the courtyard when they reveal the black lotus.

Instead, he goes in further to inspect what state the plants are in. From the smell of things, they might be rotten at this point. But if they are fresh, then they should consider trading.

"Black Lotus!" Freki repeats with a tone of interest and then asks, "How fresh?" while trying to mime picking the flower and then wilting.

"We should go down. So we can back them up if nothing else," Sow says to Saffron and Cutwell. Then she's climbing, down towards the mud-slicked ground inside the old camp...

Black Lotus. Others would have fallen on these fish men already, as soon as they had smelled the leaf.

He wonders if that has been the case, as he climbs down and the smell of death hits him. Maybe one of theirs had been wounded, or they had eaten something they themselves had wounded.

Some of the jovial spirit leaves him, as he watches from the doorway, peeking about for a body; wounded or otherwise!

Flint follows as instructed. He realizes that the fishmen aren't thrilled with his reaction, so he decides to be cooperative and open for the time being, while remaining aware of any potential threats. His eyes follow the knife that one of them pulls, but the tension in his shoulders visibly relaxes when the fishman stabs it into the wall. As for the smell, well he just breathes from his mouth not wanting to insult them any further, if that's indeed what he had done.

"Does how fresh matter?" he asks Freki in a low voice.
Apr 25, 2024 9:52 pm
Freki examines the crates of black lotus, and realizes they are wilted and rotting, and probably fermenting.

Fishman
In response to his question about their freshness, the fishman shrugs his shoulders. "Found below! Even better now!"

It picks up one of the rotting blossoms and slurps it down, whole. It's bug-eyes go even wider, pupils dilating, and lets out a long, happy sigh. "Radosty Khazuul!" it gurgles in ecstasy.

Meanwhile, the others advance, watching Freki's back along with any else who advances into the lodge.

The fishmen can see you aren't impressed with the rotting plants. One of the less tipsy ones take over negotiations as the first one stares ata its webbed hands like they are the most fascinating things in the universe.

Fishman
"You like fresh? We bring fresh. Just like before! Black Lotus for nosh."

It holds up five rotting Black Lotus plants and points to Flint's sword, illustrating his proposition: five fresh black lotus plants for one sword.

"We need many nosh! We make deal later, yes? But soon!"

It's huge bug-eyes look into yours, unblinking, looking for understanding.

Sow appears behind Cutwell as the negotiations begin in earnest.

"Oi Oi Oooooiii," she says softly as she takes in the scene inside the building, wide-eyed. She's caught enough to this to have an idea, so to her fellows she says, "What if we bring them weapons? Spears and such. Trade for fresh Lotus... maybe even set them against the beast-men?"

Cutwell’s thoughts had gone to their stash of weapons and shields back at the ruins. It would take them time to go back and get them. But it might be worth the trade.

He wondered if this place had a store below ground like their original base. Might be that these creatures didn’t know about it, and it was full of god knows what. Weapons maybe…

"Aye! Could go back to the stash, couldn’t we? Or maybe there’s a stash here somewhere for emergencies, like!"
