"Blast and confound this weather. I'm beginning to rue the day I ever came here" Flint packs up his stuff while stealing glances at Sow. Seeing that her mood appears to match his own he approaches the sour-faced girl.

"Are you feeling any better?"

To Cutwell he says, "You'll find leeches aplenty down in that muck I'd say. Is that the decision then? Into the swamp?"

"Makes sense. It’s on the way back to camp, right?" Sow asks softly after wordlessly nodding at Cutwell’s question regarding using another leech.

The girl is a tough nut; she says nothing about her injuries, nor the fact that she’s getting low on supplies. To Flint, she just shrugs.

Freki has a difficult sleep after the events of the day with nightmares of the Eater lunging at him. Each time he wakes up with his hand clutching his darts.
He's relieved to see morning come despite another storm on the horizon, the rain already coming down.

"I hear you Flint!" he sympathizes with the exasperated Marchguard.

"Yes, we should pass by the swamp on the way back. If we don't show up with more Black Lotus they might not let us back in," Freki agrees with the plan.
Mar 30, 2024 3:27 pm
Flint chuckles despite his grim face. "They'd let us in. Don't forget we have a hero fighter in our midst. Isn't that right Cutwell?"

Day 8, Watch 1
Wilderness Action: Travel Action --> Hex 6
Location: Hex 2 (!)
Weather: Extreme: Add a Fatigue and add +1 watch

With the familiar torrential rains as companion, the company moves out into the jungle. Flint feels the effects of the weather especially harshly, given the lack of wilderness clothes (+1 fatigue for Flint!), and has to fight to keep up.

Along the way, Saffron realizes that her backpack closure has come loose and her bag is waterlogged. Doing a frantic inventory, she discovers 4 ration portions have spoiled. Annoyed and upset at herself, she tosses them away

Cutwell has taken the flute they found in the polyp-infested tree trunk. Like Sow and the Shrinking Sanctuary, he feels its constant presence, as though it wields a clandestine, formidable pull, not for weight but for thoughts. It is more enticing than unpleasant.

Day 8, Watch 2
Wilderness Action: Travel Action --> Hex 6
Location: Hex 2 (!)
Weather: Unpleasant: Add a Fatigue or add +1 watch

As the day grinds on, Khazuul's raging storm quiets. Thunder and lightning relent, the rains shift from a torrential to a steady downpour, and the wind slows. Given how bad the weather has been, this barely feels like an inconvenience, except for Flint who is drenched to the bone (Flint, add +1 fatigue!)

https://i.imgur.com/IhvopNF.jpeg

For the first time, the company is going deeper into the jungle, rather than staying close to Khazuul's massive cliffs. As the walls disappear from sight, navigation becomes more challenging.

Also, the company begins to notice changes in the jungle's flora. You begin to more and more fungus, which have laid siege to many a tree's trunk, swarming and nearly drowning them in bulbous, heavy toadstools. And, from time to time, you come across giant mushrooms. Some have woody roots or even branches extending from beneath them, which makes you wonder if a tree has been completely devoured underneath. Although unsettling, they provide excellent cover from the rain.

The soundscape of the jungle also shifts slowly over the course of the journey. The animal hoots and buzzing of bugs begin to thin, and it is joined by a sound both unsettling and uncanny—a noise that seems to blur the line between the cries of beasts and the murmurs of lost souls.

At first, it begins as a low, guttural moan, echoing through the twisted branches and tangled undergrowth like a lamentation of despair. Yet, as it crescendos, it morphs into something more disconcerting—a chant that rises and falls in haunting cadences, reminiscent of rituals performed by beings forgotten by time.

As night falls, the sound increasingly carries with it a sense of foreboding, as if the very air itself is pregnant with the weight of unseen forces. It is as if the forest itself has taken on a voice, weaving a tapestry of sound that speaks of secrets buried beneath the earth and whispers hidden within the shadows.

OOC:
Welcome to Hex 6! It is now nightfall. Make Camp action makes sense here, but I'll let you all make that call. Are you tenting it still?

Let's pause for a chance to ask questions and make whatever in-character posts you'd like. Feel free to undertake actions while at camp as well.

"Been called a lot of things, ain’t I? Not been called a hero though!" the man lies. He had been called a hero.

When you stop a fella bleeding his guts out in some sorry, he did tend to heap praise on his savior.
"Right! Take this, will ya?" Cutwell says to Flint, balling up his rain coat as he hands it over.

"I’ll have to be quick if I’m looking to catch these leeches, ain’t I?" the man lies, feeling sorry for the soggy man.

"Cant be wading around with that thing on me! Too much drag!" he says.
Mar 31, 2024 3:09 pm
"I’ll help," Sow says quietly as Cutwell prepares to get to the messy task. Like the barber, her sheepskin raincloak had done a decent job during their travels, so she, unlike Flint, was still reasonably dry at the end of the day. Standing, rolling up her sleeves and pants after pulling off her boots so she can go barefoot and not soak her footwear, the pinch-faced girl gestures to the jungle as she raises her crackling voice to Saffron, Flint, Freki.

"See if you can find a flat spot, out of the way. We can shelter in the magical hut."
OOC:
ONE of us at least is sleepin’ dry tonight!
Mar 31, 2024 3:17 pm
Freki smiles at Sow's enthusiasm knowing she is excited to use her magical relic. He is excited for a dry warm shelter too after the long day of soggy hiking again, although he has faired pretty well in his protective clothing.

"Will do, Kiddo!"

Freki searches for a suitable spot and keeps all eye out for fire wood too.
Mar 31, 2024 3:50 pm
Flint has a nagging feeling that the trees are going to fall over, their core having been eaten away by the fungus. Maybe it's his water-logged brain thinking deliriously while tendrils of anxiety wind their way up and down his spine. He is exhausted from slogging through the swamp and being soaked to the skin.

Flint, being too miserable to care, gratefully accepts Cutwell's raincoat with a grunt of thanks. He appreciates the barber's attempts to save face for him, and won't forget it.

As he watches Sow take off her boots, he cringes. Surely she will become covered with leeches in short order.

"The dryest you can find, Freki," he says to the man, a note of pleading in his voice. "High and dry for our camp." Flint wasn't thrilled about spending the night in the magical hut. Then he wonders when his courage began to leave him.
Mar 31, 2024 8:21 pm
"It's tough finding dry wood in this place, but there's some under these giant mushroom trees," Freki replies to Flint as he picks up a few fallen branches near the base of a trunk protected from the rain by the large fungal canopy.

He hears one of the strange noises in the distance and pauses to listen until it fades. It reminds him a bit of the horn a few nights ago.

"Tunny said the Black Skulls used to operate in this area until it was over run by Beastmen ... Keep your eyes open and weapons close," he reminds everyone before continuing his search for a good camp site.

Cutwell takes off his own boots and rolls up the legs of his trousers. When Flint and Freki are far enough away, Cutwell speaks up:

"They’ll come to us, I suspect." he says, winking at Sow over the lie he had told Flint.

"Nice pink legs like these? How could they resist?" he laughs, and wiggles his feet about in the water, trying to drum up some interest in his flesh!

"Who do you reckons got the sweeter blood, me or you?" he asks Sow, with the beginnings of a bet or contest in his mind. Most leeches wins!
OOC:
Don’t know the first thing about leeches or leech catching!

Freki hikes a bit into the forest and finds an elevated outcropping before long. The rock formation is quite large and requires a bit of a scramble up its side to reach the top, but it is mainly flat on the top, and large enough to support the Shrunken Sanctum.

Sow goes to light the tiny lamp within. She pushes her light toward, but some unseen force resists her hand. It doesn't take her long to realize that the force is actually resisting her mind, that she has to mentally push past this barrier. The effort is taxing, but she manages it.
OOC:
Sow has successfully cast her first spell, and the first spell of the game!
The space around the trinket begins to bend and warp, and then suddenly, the sanctum snaps to full size. The company quickly loads more fuel into the brazier, and the sturdy structure is set for the night!

Meanwhile, Cutwell prepares to go leech diving...
OOC:
Alright KCC, I dropped some leech harvesting options on the discord.
Quote:
Therefore, @KCC is welcome to harvest some leeches by putting his bare legs into the swamp. If so, roll the Die of Fate! The die roll will represent how many doses of leeches he finds, but a roll of 1-3 will also result in some negative consequences.

A safer way to harvest leeches is to systematically dig up and turn over the mud with a spade or similar implement and harvest the ones that try to squirm away. Considered an Explore Action, like searching for Black Lotus, which takes a full watch. Results in 2d6 leeches.
Make your choice!

OOC:
Good point, I dropped the ball on that. Please blame the virus and/or sleep deprivation. I'll include Sow in the narrative outcome of Cutwell's successful swamp stomping
Cutwell and Sow roll up their pants and sleeves and go leech hunting the old-fashioned way, presenting their legs as bait. With skin exposed, Sow's withering growth is visible.
OOC:
We have never established what this looks like, exactly. What does this look like, Harrigan? I can define it if you prefer.
Cutwell is right, the Leeches are unable to resist his pink flesh. In no time, he's caught a host of Leeches, enough for five more treatments.
After Sow manages to master the Shrunken Sanctum, and as the others are moving the gear inside for the night's camp, Flint reflects on the magic he's witnessed. Indeed, it is not the first time he's witnessed magic. He is reminded of his periodic visions of Khazuul that he's had since before arriving.
OOC:
Windy, in character creation, you rolled a bond that says you see a vision of something deep inside Khazuul. What is it? If you'd rather I define it, let me know.

Day 8, Watch 3
Wilderness Action: Make Camp
Location: Hex 6
Weather: Unpleasant: Add a Fatigue or add +1 watch

Everyone piles into the stone building with the bronze hexagrams that Sow has summoned from its tiny form. The space is blessedly dry, and the fire is perfect for drying out clothes and skin alike (Flint's beautiful hair begins to go frizzy, however). Despite the warm weather, the heat of the fire is not unwelcome. It only feels inviting.

You pull out the dinosaur meat you harvested the day that Thorn died and share a well-earned meal. Although you've had nothing but tough Dino meat for days, hunger truly is the best spice.
OOC:
Everyone please consume 1 usage of a ration. You can borrow one from Saffron if you are out (she has 7 uses) but let me know.

Feel free to start using the Leeches, and roleplaying around the fire amid the bronze stars.

Secret Roll

When the leeches have been harvested, the campsite selected and the Sanctum returned to full size, Sow stands in the doorway to the place, looking out into the dark of the noisome jungle as her things dry near the fire. Still barefoot, the slim woman's bare calves and now arms indeed reveal the spidering web of what look like dark veins beneath her skin. Some affliction mars the girl, that much is certain, but she seems less embarrassed about it now, more at home with being herself among her companions. It's been a scant time they've been together, but so much has happened.

She is smiling into the night, listening to the ominous droning; her voice is quiet. "It is nothing like I imagined..."
OOC:
Ration consumed. And huh -- are we adding two fatigue for this watch, or perhaps one?

Cutwell hovers about, unsure of when he should intrude into Sow’s evening wonder with his promise of a leeching. She needed one, that much was certain, and much more besides that, if that affliction was to be set right. Still, she seems at peace in the moment, and so the man doesn’t look to administer the sucking remedy just yet.

"What was it you imagined then?"
