The sound of metal sliding on scabbard would have rung in the air had it not been so windy, as Flint drew his sword.

"It's as good a day as any to lose one's head, is it not?" he bellows.

OOC:
The Die of fate is cast!
The Dreadwings are deep in their bloodlust and relish the chance to slay more Black Skulls. But, they are loathe to give up the ones they already have on the ropes. Two of the spearmen break off from the main group and begin to approach the jungle's edge, grim-faced and ready for violence.

The main group continues to tangle with the Black Skulls amid the vine-choked ruin, pressing them hard. They have corralled the Black Skulls the way you might with snarling beasts, but the black skulls fight back ferociously. You recognize them from the camp now, Gringle and Grinwit.

Gringle
"Glad you could join us, brothers!" calls out Gringle as he slips passed a spear to clip a Dreadwing. Despite his desperate odds, he is full of bravado. "Don't worry we saved a few for you!"

Grinwit
Grinwit's face is a blood-splattered and smiling, as if he's having the time of his life. He's not a bright man, but he's a big one.
OOC:
PCs are up! The two advancing Dreadwings can be closed for melee. All can be hit with missile fire. The Black Skulls are Gringle (0/4 hp, 12/12 STR) and Grinwit (3/4 hp, 12/12 STR).

Did any of us go the hiding route? Perhaps just Sow?
Jan 29, 2024 6:06 am
Waiting under cover as the two men charge forward, Sow digs into her lead pouch and retrieves a handful of sling bullets, which she loads into the leather pouch of her sling. As they close in she starts her wind-up, hoping they are distracted by Freki, Cutwell, and Flint -- then she gnashes her teeth, aims, and releases!

Freki suddenly realizes that he's actually going to need to use the great sword that he's been carrying as two of the dreadwings rush towards them. He tries to balance his weight evenly like Flint had showed him and prepares for the sudden momentum that would be generated by the swing that caught him off guard last night. He closes the remaining distance with a few carefully timed shuffles and then swings for the first man's head.

"Guide me Thorn!" he yells as the sword hurtles towards its target.
OOC:
I guess I'll attack the same one as Sow and I'll include a die of fate if you want to use it to see what sort of position Freki ends up in after the swing ... hopefully not on his ass again.

Cutwell takes off at a sprint; his heel digging deep in the mud as he does so! He keeps his metal arm raised, willing to use it as a shield, if the spear point intends to meet him.

Up close, he doesn’t speak, and simply tries to sidestep the sharp point, and drive his weapons into the bastard in front of him! Keeping the arm between he and the man, he whips out with his knife, trying to catch him by surprise.

OOC:
Results from Round 2

Sow and Freki harry Dreadwing A, doing 8 damage. With Armor 1 and HP 4, that means 3 damage gets through to his STR: 9/12. He succeeds on his saving throw, so he's still standing

Cutwell, Flint, and Saffron skirmish with Dreadwing B, doing 6 damage. With Armor 1 and HP 4, that means 1 damage gets through to his STR: 11/12. He fails his saving throw, so the attack is CRITICAL, and he goes down, triggering a morale roll!
The trap is sprung! As the two Dreadwings approach, their eyes go wide as they realize their error.

The first Dreadwing manages to block Sow's sling bullet with his shield, but Freki delivers true on his promise and staggers the bastard with Thorn's Immolator. Freki can almost swear he sees the burn marks on the blade come to life as fire, but it is probably a trick of the light.

The second is quickly surrounded by Flint, Saffron, and Cutwell. The three of them overwhelm his defences and Cutwell penetrates the Dreadwing's defenses with surgical skill, slicing his leg. The man hisses a curse as blood flows from the wound.

One of the three rearguards, seemingly the leader, tries to rally the Dreadwings. "Stand firm! Rally your ranks!" and the rearguard stands their ground. But the Dreadwing struck by Cutwell cannot endure. Witnessing his comrade leveled by Thorn's sword and already tasting Cutwell's blade, he makes a desperate attempt to flee.

Resolving Enemy Actions for Round 2

The Dreadwing closest to you fails to find an avenue of escape, and the others press their attack. Looks like Gringle is downed with a critical, and Grinwit is still standing with 1/4 HP
Limping and surrounded on all sides, your Dreadwing foe cannot manage to disengage. It is the best he can do to parry your attacks. He is gasping for air, eyes wild and full of that deadly panic that consumes men on the battlefield.

"Fucking kill them!" roars the Dreadwing leader, pointing at Gringle and Grinwit, desperate to even up the odds. Gringle puts up a good fight, but ganged up on the way he is, it's only a matter of time. He goes down with the butt of a spear cracking against the side of his head. Grinwit manages to hold his foe back, his smile not wavering despite his comrade's fate.
OOC:

Grinwit gives as hard as he takes, wearing down his foe with heavy blows against his shield, but not managing to break past their defenses.

Freki baths in the thrill of successfully pulling off the sword maneuver, somehow it worked just as he had planned. But the flames that had danced along blade ... was that just his imagination? He looks around to see if anyone else saw it, but everyone is too preoccupied by the battle, which brings him back to his senses.

"Way to hold them off Grinwit!" He yells encouragingly.

Identifying the leader, Freki sheaths Thorn's sword into the mud next to him and uncoils his more familiar and trusted whip again. He didn't want to push his luck with the sword too much. After letting the whip gather a little of the mud at his feet, he strikes out at the leader, aiming for his face in the hopes the mud might blind him temporary, gaining an advantage for his allies.
OOC:
I can just roll damage if that's easiest, but I'm happy to trade the damage for some sort of advantage (e.g. enhanced attack) for anyone else who attacks him because he's blinded by the mud splatter.

Cutwell spits on the man as he falls in the mud, without missing a step. He keeps moving, up towards the melee and the beleaguered gang members they came to help! It’s hard work, climbing across the jungle like this when it’s slick and thick underfoot!

Flint corners the terrified Dreadwing as the rest of the group advances. His eyes go wide as Flint raises his Marchguard blade, but the wretch catches it just at the last moment with his shield, driven by pure instinct. The blow knocks him into the mud and his spear tumbles away from him, but he yet lives.

Saffron moves with Cutwell, the man risked his life to save her brother from Grimjaws, bearing the glittering scimitar that looks like something from a fable. Cutwell feints and jabs, while she comes around and delivers a savage swing that knicks his shoulder.

Freki squares of with the leader, who snarls as he turns around to face the beast handler. He intercepts the whip with his buckler, and the crack of leather against wood rings out through the stony ruins.

Sow looses another stone - a difficult shot given the ruined stonework that the Dreadwings are fighting in. It hits square, but the man ducks behind his buckler in time.
OOC:
Summary of player actions:

Freki's attack does 4 damage to the leader, bringing him to 1/4 HP after armor.
Sow's attack does 1 damage to Dreadwing D, absorbed by his armor. Impaired due to range/cover as you expected
Cutwell and Saffron team up to do 3 damage on Dreadwing E, bringing his STR to 11/12. He makes his save
Flint does major damage to the fleeing Dreadwing B, but he makes his save, so he is still in it.

Dreadwing A: Dead
Dreadwing B: HP 0/4, STR 5/12. Routed and attempting to flee. All attacks on him are Enhanced (d12)

"They're nothing but filthy Black Skulls! Give 'em hell!" the alpha Dreadwing roars. He charges at Freki, the spear tip thrusting with murderous intent, but the quick beast handler sidesteps the blow. (Freki takes 1 damage)

The other two Dreadwings find themselves outnumbered, with Saffron and Cutwell attacking from one flank and Grinwit on the other. Hard pressed, they fight back-to-back, spear tips flashing in a desperate attempt to even the odds.

One tip catches Saffron before she can dart back behind Cutwell. She collapses in a horrible heap on the ground, clutching the wound. The sword falls from her hand, ringing strangely melodically as it collides with the hard stone.

Grinwit takes a slash across his chest, but if he noticed it, he gives no sign - that big, stupid grin doesn't even flinch. He bears down on the man, relentlessly hacking away at him, sending chips of his shield flying in all directions, eventually finding flesh. He keeps going, splattering blood everywhere, until the Dreadwing collapses into a bloody convulsion.

Meanwhile, Flint's foe manages to scramble to his feet and launches himself into a dead sprint for the bushes, running as his life depends on it. He disappears into Khazuul's dense undergrowth.
OOC:

"Saffron!" Sow cries from the rear as the woman goes down, wounded! The Black Skulls lack in women generally, and especially in those who don’t look and behave worse than the worst of the desperate and despicable men — so despite being terrified, the former field warden rushes forward, loosing her axe from its thong as she goes.

Teeth and axe bared bared, the growling Skull reaches her downed companion and stands guard over her, making sure there will be no finishing blow!
