"Or ..." Thorn stands ready and hovering over the captives, "We could bring them back to camp as prisoners along with the heads of the beasts. That would be quite an entrance, wouldn't it? he says glaring at the two men.

A dark cloud is over Sow for most of this conversation. Her hair is plastered to her head from the rain, and droplets suddenly fly when she shakes her head with some vigor. Her expression is troubled, perhaps a little angry.

"That'll be death for them as certain as we cut their throats right now," she says with a slight warble in her voice. "Who is these men to us? What wrongs have they done? How are we to know?"

Then, mainly to Saffron, and Freki, who she is slowly growing to respect and trust, the draggletailed explorer adds, "I come here to hunt treasure, not murder men."
Dec 27, 2023 11:33 pm
Freki nods in agreement with Sow, she has a good head on her shoulders, and then follows Cutwell's suggestion by picking up the owl-man's spear and tossing it on the ground in front of the captive, "Don't touch it until we're out of sight, but then cut yourself loose and get out of here. You're in Black Skull territory, so you might find yourself out of the pot, but into the fire if your not quick about it."

Then he shoulders his heavy pack and puts an arm around Thorn, "Don't worry, they'll be plenty impressed with two beastmen trophies. Grab that one and let's get out of here before it gets dark," he points to the writhing tentacle-headed creature in the mud and prepares to continue their trek.

"As a matter of interest…" Cutwell starts up before they leave. "Whats the going rate for a day’s work with the Dreadwings? Just want to know if I got a bad deal, don’t I?"

Captive
"You get paid?" the captive jokes. "There is scant mercy in Khazuul, and I naught expected it to come from Black Skulls. My thanks."

"In case wearing the bones doesn't take, I heard in The Winches there's some independents that found a temple to the southeast. Gotta a camp, trying to crack it open. "

You continue on into the jungle, leaving the two Dreadwings in possession of their lives and gear, and continue in search of the Black Lotus, your grisly trophies in tow.

[oocThe heads take up an inventory slot each, and looks like you have enough slots to manage it.[/ooc]

We've completed 2 watches now for the explore action. I can reveal that this hex has a 2 in 6 chance of finding Black Lotus. We can up that to 3 in 6 on account of Sow's Fieldwarden background. With a roll of 1, you are successful! [/ooc]

Your hunt is successful! You discover the rare and beautiful blossom growing out the back of a moldering human skeleton that died face-down in the mud some time ago.
OOC:
Will post the return to camp in a few hours!

Thorn sulks at the verbal bashing he took when he suggested bringing the prisoners back. He was only looking out for them and their pockets. But all is forgotten once they discover their prize and truly it is beautiful. So beautiful that even a hardened Marchguard could appreciate it.
Dec 28, 2023 11:57 pm
When the group finally finds the blossom, Sow crouches over it, marveling at it -- but unwilling to collect or even touch it. "It's beautiful," she says hoarsely, to whomever is collecting it. "But fragile. Be careful!"

"Way I see it; had we gone to a different tea shop, we’d have met a different fella, wouldn’t we? He’d have offered us a few gold coins and we’d be wearing feathers on our heads instead." he says, clapping Thorn on the back as they walk.

"I can only speak for myself, can’t I? But I ain’t looking to murder anyone just yet! Not based the tea shop I happened to frequent!"

The sun is setting as the party returns to the Black Skull camp. The prisoners are still tied to the pole, though if there is still life in them it doesn't look much like it. Other Black Skulls are filtering back in, removing their fearsome masks as they enter the gate.

When you go to collect on your hard-won prizes, word quickly spreads that you've found a Black Lotus on the first day out in the wilds. There is a mix of cheers and disgruntled mutters. Tunny explains, with a wild-eyed smile, that his crew of cutthroats had taken bets on how many of you would die before finding a Lotus. When you reveal the beastmens' heads, there is a more resounding cheer.

Foreman Tunny
"Seems like we misjudged you lot. That's a good turnout for the first day. Hey Wilmot! You're back on latrines!"

The Black Skulls jeer in unison at this Wilmot's expense as Tunny pays out your daily wages and earnings. He hands over glass beads that he explains can be exchanged up with Dario in Vanguard Bastion for gold pieces - it's too dangerous to keep any gold down here. He hands you each your daily payment (5 beads) plus 10 more beads for the heads and another 35 for the Black Lotus plant.
OOC:
Each character gains 5 beads. There are an additional 45 beads for the group (including Saffron and Samir), so you can decide how to split that up on the discord perhaps.
As you are collecting your pay, the gates open again, the black Anzu returns to the camp with the Ruin Sage astride it. It is hard to believe he travelled to Vanguard Bastion and back in this weather, as he was rumoured to be doing.
OOC:
Time to make camp! You've already eaten your daily ration, so you can just pack it in. Anything you want to do before we roll on the Wilderness Event table and start a new day?

As they collect their payment for the day, Cutwell mutters with the others:

"Reckon we ought to keep them two close, ain’t we? Don’t want word getting out about… well, you know."

Not that Cutwell thought they would spill the beans, not with the man having saved the brother’s life, but you could never tell with people.

"Plus, they’re handy in a tight spot, ain’t they?"
Dec 29, 2023 3:57 pm
Thorn smiles at his beads and the idea of even more loot once they divvy it up.

"Probably right, Cutwell. Those two will prove useful allies for sure."

Once they have gotten their payment and begun setting up camp, Sow invites Saffron to spend the night with them, and then mutters to herself about how little she likes this place, this 'camp of the Black Skulls.' Murderers and thieves, torturers and bullies they seem, the lot of them.

Sitting near a low fire that struggles to throw heat, she looks at the few beads in her palm. "Makes no sense," she says, louder but with that familiar scratch. "Someone here would slide a knife in your ribs for these quick as if they were really gold... if they're worth gold."

Saffron
"Is it different elsewhere?" she asks with a sigh. "Not that I have seen. They just hide their knives better."
Dec 31, 2023 3:24 am
"Don't know yet. We figured signing on with a company would help us... get the lay of the land. But already despise working for these... people."

Sow pulls her collar tight, hiding the dark veins that are visible beneath her skin there. "We just got here. How long have you and your brother been at this?"

OOC:
As mentioned in Discord, no need to belabor this -- just making nice with the other person who seems to have a soul. We can summarize what they talk about, or just move on, as well.

"Might be that we want to check out that temple southeast way, then?" Cutwell mutters back, careful not to be overheard around camp.

Saffron

A deafening thunder clap interrupts the conversation, and sudden gusts rattle the canopies. When it quiets down, Saffron answers Sow's question, but she doesn't volunteer much.

"We arrived two weeks ago," Saffron begins. You hear notes of refinement in her speech. If you closed your eyes and imagined her in perfumes and silks, she could pass as an aristocrat, or more.

"We joined the Black Skulls shortly after. It was Samir's idea - safety in numbers, he said."

She suddenly turns to you, animated, urgent.

"Sow, will you tell me a memory? A fond one? The dreariness of this weather is making me doubt there is any good in the world at all."
Dec 31, 2023 7:50 am
Sow looks stricken when Saffron asks her to share a memory, like someone suddenly has a knife to her throat. She's happy when Cutwell muses quietly about the temple, but the look on the other woman's face tells the former fieldwarden an answer is desired -- is expected.

"When I was just a girl," the young woman says almost without thinking, "I... didn't have a home. So I would sneak into farmer's barns, sheds, cellars. I thought I'd outsmarted them all, changing where I'd stay from night to night... but it turned out they knew. And they were letting me do that." Her voice cracks, and she continues, "I... I never knew at the time, but they'd all agreed to help look after me, and keep me from finding out. So I'd stick around and not leave. All those nights in the rafters looking down on the animals, in the summer hayfields with the fireflies, in the shed with Fergus the cat..."

Terrible at telling stories, the girl just shrugs then and stuffs some almost moldy bread into her mouth, thinking that if her yap was full she wouldn't have to talk further.

"Mo moo 'ave wum?*" she asks the other woman.
OOC:
*Do you have one?, translated from Sow with mouth full.

Saffron
"Fergus the Cat sounds like a beautiful beastie. I feel better already just imagining him."

She hesitates as if collecting her strength, like she's preparing to leap off a precipice. "I do. I remember my mother's smile. "

Her voice, though soft, carries the weight of a thousand memories. She looks into the distance, as if trying to grasp a moment long gone.

"It was a simple thing, you know? The way her eyes crinkled at the corners, the warmth that radiated from her. In those moments, everything felt safe, secure."

She lets out a quiet sigh, her gaze returning to the present. "Life has a way of eroding even the most cherished memories. Yet, those smiles endure, tucked away in the recesses of my mind like precious artifacts. It's what keeps me going, a flicker of light in the shadows. So, yes, I remember my mother's smile, and in remembering, I find the strength to face what lies ahead."

"How about you, Cutwell? Do you have a happy memory to share?"
Dec 31, 2023 4:03 pm
Thorn wanders over to the small fire hoping to warm his cold wet hands and learn more about Saffron and Sow. They looked deeply engaged in serious conversation. Thorn's natural curiosity was burning to know what the two odd ones were discussing as he lowered his weary body and sat cross-legged beside Sow, shoving his arms out toward the much-welcomed heat.

"What are you two discussing so intently? Ah, memories is it? Cutwell dreams of heads with thick locks, ripe for the shearing. Isn't that right, Cutwell?" Thorn asks, chuckling as he throws a twig into the fire.
