Aiwë is already on hand watching for such events. When the guard reaches down to help up his friend, she grabs the back of the friend's armour.

"Quit wasting air that might be your last," she snaps at the guards. "You'll get out faster if you move your arms as fast as your mouth." She fixes the guard in the water with a glare. "Kick faster." She releases him and fishes the slave out of the water and returns him to the raft. "Keep hold of the rope," she instructs him, "and pull."

With complaints muttered under their breath and dark looks snuck in Aiwe's direction, the guards go back to their assigned roles.

The slave Aiwe helps back up gives her a weary, grateful smile, but his teeth chatter with cold. Very few of the slaves look like they're in better condition.

The group keeps moving, and the water level rises.

Hauling a rope in each hand, Koveras shuffles through the water to Aiwe's side. It's almost easier to swim now than walk. He gestures towards the low ceiling with his head. "We're nearly there, but the passage narrows ahead. We have to abandon the raft."

Sure enough, the water is picking up speed here, churning through a smaller space.

Aiwë speaks quietly in Orcish to avoid snooping guards. "We'll have to handle it carefully." She looks at the rope. It looks just long enough. "We'll hang onto the rope so no one gets swept off and our swimming can work together. Guards first, so they don't trample anyone, you as a buffer, then the slaves, and I'll watch our rear."

She takes the rope and approaches Stella. "Can you pull us, sister-girl?" At her consent she ties a loop and puts it around her chest.

"Listen up!" Aiwë calls over the water. "Its swim or die time! You argue, you drown. You fight, you drown. I won't be your judge but the water will. Now, quickly!" She points at the heartiest looking guard. "You! Grab this here." She goes down the line with a drummer's speed, assigning positions until she takes her position at the end of the rope.

"Now, swim and don't let go!"

Ida steps out from behind Dieter and Runson as they rush to take down the guards in an attempt to save the slaves from a brutal and panic-filled death. In the commotion around her, it almost feels like time slows down. Ida reaches for the holy symbol around her neck grasping it in both her hands and yelling "Lythander save us!" a tear streaking down her face. As those words leave her mouth she feels a breeze around her her and she sees angelic figures burst past with weapons in hand. The sounds of panic and battle seem to return and time regains its normal passage.

DC 14 Wisdom Dave - Ida Casts Spirit Gaurdians - Concentration spell lasting up to 10 minutes in a 15-foot radius when the creature enters the area for the first time on a turn or starts its turn there, it must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the creature takes 3d8 radiant damage. On a successful save, the creature takes half as much damage

With characteristic determination, Dieter hurls himself at the front line of guards, longsword a blur in his hands. His momentum serves him well, and three of the guards drop. But the other three, cautious now with this skilled fighter, carefully encircle him...

Aldous and Stephan fling spells of fire and ice at the crossbowmen, with Aldous' fire consuming one of the guards. The crossbowmen return with a volley of their own, and Stephan takes a bolt to the chest (Stephan takes 9 dmg and is bleeding out). The young wizard flops onto his back, breath sputtering as he clutches at the bolt with trembling hands.

Before the trio of guards can close in on lone Dieter, angelic figures burst into being around Ida and charge forward. Their blades and spears of light pierce the Iron Throne swordsmen to their souls, and the unfortunate guards perish as they're cooked from within by divine power (The guards passed their save, but even half damage is enough to take them out!).

It's a short fight. With only the three crossbowmen remaining, the survivors lose their nerve and abandon their posts. And just in time, for the stream of slaves has just reached the gate. Energized by their prospective freedom, they charge through the gates and out into the woods!

The people are disheartened at the loss of the raft, but with Aiwe pushing them on (and Stellrus pulling!) the group presses forward.

The tunnel narrows, and at the very end the passage is completely submerged... but it's a short test of faith to take that swim, for the tunnel quickly rises back above the water line. With Walla, Koveras, and Aiwe urging the group on, soon everyone makes it to the other side, shivering but exhilarated, for daylight shines from a side passage...

The group stumbles from the mine's exit into a small muddy pool created by the flood. Most of the people lie flat on their backs, staring upward with a mixture of exhaustion and gratitude.

There's little time to rest for the companions, however, for nearby is the sound of combat. A quick look shows Dieter's group defeating the guards at the gate.

"Now get in your cabins!" One of the nearby guards drags a slave to his feet and gives the man a push toward one of the cabins. "Go on! This is no time to make a run for it. We're watching you!" Several more guards join in with threats and pushes.

What began as a show of authority to get a job done is now true anger. "You of the Iron Throne!" She stares down the guards. "Daevaeorn is dead and your operation destroyed. Look around you!" Aiwë gestures to the ending battle at the gate. "Release your unlawful captives and surrender. Now."

"Bit of bad luck, Stephan" Dieter says calmly leaning over the dying mage. "It’s a good thing the others want to keep you around." He adds

"Ida! This one is dying, we need him alive"

Dieter then joins Aiwë ready to back her up.

The guards are no longer so easily cowed. "You're not with the Iron Throne? I knew it!"

Another shakes his head. "I'll believe the boss is dead when I see his body with my own eyes!"

A third pulls out his sword. "It's all a mess, but I know a chance for promotion when I see one!"

The guards move in to attack!

walking over to Aiwë the scene devolves into a brawl. With a deep sigh Dieter wades in to perform his bloody duty.

Stella scowls, wishing she had held onto the robes. If Dieter was here, hopefully Aldous wasn't too far behind.

As the battle breaks out, Stella scoots back then transforms back into her girl self. She shivers, realizing she and her equipment are still soaked and freezing. Her sopping, mop of loose hair covers part of her face. She flicks it aside and tries to draw her bow and forming an arrow of stardust, but her trembling hands throw her aim, sending the arrow shooting above the guards' heads.

Fear begins to rise in her chest as she sees the chaos of the prisoners and guards. It would take a miracle for all of the prisoners to survive this.

The spirits round her dissipating as dieter breaks her concentration. The immediate threat abated Ida looks at Stephan choking on his own blood, arrow sunk deeply in his chest "I apologize this is going to hurt". She snaps the arrow shaft and sits Stephen up as best as possible pushing the rest of the shaft through. "With that out of the way we can actually get started"

Laying Stephan back down Ida gently places her hands over his gaping chest wound, her hands quickly becoming soaked in blood. Soothing words of prayer and healing drifting from her mouth akin to a hymn.
