1. The Cloakwood

As they descend, Stella gapes at the grand artisanship, then draws her lips to a line at the mention of mercenaries.

Stella had a feeling they would meet Shar-Teel again—she just didn't know when or where—and the Iron Throne Secret Mine wasn't on the list. (She kept a list for nearly everyone they met.)

Despite nearly killing Deiter, it seemed she wanted some kind of cooperation...What was she here for if not regular mercenary business?

She lets the others handle the talking. Drawing open her tome, she steps behind as if she were some kind of scribe taking inspection notes for Koveras. She takes the opportunity to look at the papers and maps and tries to take notes and sketch as much as she can of some of the most relevant maps. Between glances, she makes sure to look at other locations around the room, as to not be too suspicious: the guards and their uniforms, the furniture, Koveras and his expressions.

No way the guards were buying her story, with her eyes glued to Dieter. "Relax, old friend," Aiwë drawls to Shar-Teel. "Settling grudges is for when we're off duty." She pats Dieter's shoulder and glances at Koveras as though nervous their distractions might incite their commander's ire.

Dieter isn’t suprised to see Shar-teel though he would like to think few things do suprise him these days. He meets her gaze, his stare is long and hallow as if he is looking through her showing no emotion or comfort. He waits for her to look away first before returning to Koveras’ side, he was on the job.

Shar-Teel gives the smallest of nods. She follows Aiwe's gaze to Koveras and cocks her head slightly at the sight of him. "Right! I imagine you're here to see Davaeorn. Well, when you've finished with him, maybe we can catch up."

(Insight: She's glued to her seat at a desk, but it seems like she's waiting for the right moment to up and leave. Clearly she expects something bad to happen, and doesn't want to be around when it does.)
Dec 22, 2023 3:55 am
The guard ushers the group through the room and down a descending staircase. At the bottom is a sturdy door. "This is Davaeorn's suite. I've heard him call it is Sanctum, which is fine; as far as I'm concerned, whatever he says, goes."

The guard uneasily shifts his weight. "Shall I accompany you, my... lords and ladies? Or maybe I should return to my duties...?" He nods quickly, as though the companions have already given an answer. "Yes, my duties! But if you should need of my services again, you have but to ask. Erm... farewell!" He takes the stairs up two at a time, leaving the party alone in front of Davaeorn's door.

(Perception: Several in the group notice the lack of a certain cold shiver. Wherever the invisible dread wolf has gotten to, it doesn't seem to be in the near vicinity.)

Sanctum. Stella frowns at the word. Was that just so the wizard could feel grand, or did that have arcane significance?

"He might have traps and wards..." Stella whispers to the others. "Are we sure we want to engage him here? I might be able to disable one or two, but only if I can see them...but if we can get him out, that might be better. Keep an eye out for runes, at the very least..." she says, feeling a sinking pit in her stomach.

On one of the nearby tables Stella notes several maps that seem to detail districts of a major city - most likely Baldur's Gate. One large building stands out to her with the label "Seven Suns Trading Coster" circled in red ink.

Warily checking for traps and magical glyphs, the young druid does perceive a spell on the door. It doesn't seem to be harmful, fortunately, and is likely just a simple alarm in place to alert Davaeorn to the comings and goings of people through the door.

Thinking on the matter of "sanctum", Stella just isn't sure of the word's significance is to Davaeorn. True, there is a spell that allows a powerful wizard to magically secure a room or dwelling, but stereotypical wizards are sometimes known for their grandiose attitudes. Still, can you really expect an evil spellcaster not to have some form of trap or warding within his lair?

Stella casts Dispel Magic on the door.
Dec 23, 2023 2:56 am
Stella's magic subtly unravels the alarm spell on the door, and under Aiwe's magical influence the area becomes cloaked in silence. From there, it's a simple matter for Dieter and Runeson to beat the door down without giving the group's intentions away. And just like that, they're in.

The corridor before them is even finer than the floor above, and not just for the stonework. Lavish rugs run the floor, and large paintings hang on the walls. The room before the group looks to be some kind of foyer complete with some sitting chairs, a small table, and a suit of ornate armor. Off to the right is a small but ornate bedroom. The corridor continues on the far side of the foyer and runs a fair distance, with a small handful of branching passages.

There's no immediate sign of Davaeorn, but the party is not alone. The suit of armor in the foyer begins to emit an ominous red light. It brandishes its longsword, which silently bursts into magical flame, and takes a threatening step towards the group!

OOC:
We have a battlemap! You can access it here. After clicking the link, you might need me to "accept" you, but then after that you can view the map whenever is convenient for you, and it should work on mobile devices!

It's not a perfect representation, but it should get us all playing in the same ballpark. We're not really counting squares, but you should be able to move the tokens around, and also measure rough distances with the ruler tool. You can even draw shapes on there if you want, to show areas of effect, or show the route your token traveled this turn (if that's important).

I've included for at-a-glance convenience the state of the battlemap at the beginning of this round. It's just a static image, you can't move your tokens on it or anything. Do that using the link I provided above!

I drew a red arrow indicating where the battle horror intends to move this turn, so you can choose to either stand your ground and let him come to you, move up to meet him halfway, or even move right up to where he is to lock him down! Just make your intentions known, and I'll form the narrative around that.

I believe Aiwe's still concentrating on Silence.

As always, questions are good!

With the area of silence around them preventing the majority of spells, and so many bodies in the way in the hall, Stella's resolves simply help those in front.

Clutching her tome, she raises her hand and prepares to cast Minor Illusion to try to briefly distract or disrupt the armor's figure's sight when it attacked—if it even relied on sight.

At the same time, she wracks her brain trying to determine if she knows anything about the imposing figure that could help them. If it could light swords on fire...she feared what else it could do.
OOC:
Hoping to impose disadvantage on one of its attacks next round or something by creating a bunch of images of the party members in front of its face. Do what you will with that nat 1 on the Arcana check, though, haha

Aiwë continues a steady beat on her shield, but instead of sound radiating outward, all sound within her magical reach is drawn inwards and smothered.

She moves forward behind Dieter, then plants herself in the opening of the hallway, helping to cover Stella and their magic users. Shifting smoothly between her club and her feet, she continues the beat as she throws her club at the Horror. It strikes it square in the head with a resonant clang that could not be heard but the musician could feel in her soul. She followed quickly with her second club, but this one bounced off with a full thud (she imagined) that told her it likely had no effect.

Helmed Horror takes 15 damage. Ignore the second damage roll.

Round 1 Summary

In uncanny silence Dieter and the helmed horror clash! The young fighter's magical sword cuts swiftly through the air at what he believes could be an opening, but the horror's shield tucks up to turn the weapon aside. The air above the animated creature's blade quivers with heat, and Dieter feels that burn as his opponent's counterattack slams home (Dieter takes 15 dmg). The brief flash of Stella's illusory magic does little to hinder the thing's attack - this time.

With tusks bared, Koveras slips out of the hallway to circle around and strike at the horror's back. His first thrust scrapes off the fine plate armor, but his second sinks into a gap. The horror hardly seems bothered (It takes only half-damage from non-magical weapons), and spins around to impale the half-orc through the chest... and it would have succeeded, too, if not for Dieter's timely shield bash. Aim thrown off, the creature's fiery blade slices across Koveras' ribs (Koveras takes 16 dmg).

At that moment, Aiwe's thrown club collides with the horror's helmet with enough force to snap the neck of a normal opponent (Crit! But only half damage from the non-magical weapon). The companions are coming to see that this is no ordinary animated armor. It moves not like a mindless construct, but with the skill and experience of a true warrior. It doesn't flinch as Aiwe's second club bounces off its breastplate, and even Aldous' three fire snakes can't seem to get through its armor.

A deadly opponent. But where is the wizard? The party can only hope their intrusion is kept quiet while they deal with this helmed horror.

Seeing Dieter land an incredible blow on the horror with his magical sword, Stella's jaw drops slightly, surprised and impressed.

As it tries to retaliate against the party, Stella waves her hand again, trying another Minor Illusion, this time of Dieter's tower shield in multiple places around the construct, trying to lure it into a missing blow or get it to hesitate long enough for her fiends to safely dodge.

Once they finished this off, then they could find the wizard, and she wanted everyone in one piece as much as possible.
