How were they to tell whether Aldous was here...Stella had prepared Locate Object after waking at the inn for this very purpose. She could use that to locate a piece of clothing, like his shirt! Unless they left him shirtless or something...Stella blushes at the thought. Then she scowls.

No, Viconia had set up anti-divinations...But Bently said there was a countercharm on Aldous. Did his clothing count? Were there countercharms on Viconia? If she were here, certainly Aldous would be too. If she weren't, well, maybe they were at Shar's santuary. She wracks her brain and begins rapidily flipping through pages, all the while trying to keep the Pass Without Trace spell active.

After some moments, Stella speaks up again with another idea. "We only need to check one tent," Stella reasons, pointing at a sketch of the camp layout she made after her sparrow scouted the area. "Tazok's. Bently said Aldous was in a tent, and it doesn't seem like Tazok would trust either group to hold onto such a valuable captive. I can send my familiar to peek in from the back. Any objections?"

Arcana (How do such anti-divinations work? Would locate object work to detect Aldous?) - (1d20+5)

From what Stella can gather, the magic used to ward Aldous must be similar to the nondetection spell. That particular spell is normally reserved for students of arcane magic, but perhaps Viconia has been granted special access to it or similar magic through her worship of Shar. It certainly seems fitting for a goddess of secrecy to gift a spell that conceals its target from conventional magic.

Stella also thinks, considering how the material components of such spells are generally sprinkled over the target, that the countercharm in place on Aldous would affect his clothing as well.

Still, such magic tends to wear off over a day or so, and would need to be renewed periodically. Viconia could very well be somewhere in the camp, staying nearby in order to keep the countercharm active.

Either that, or there's a mage of some sort around here.

Ida looks at Stella "I think using the bird would be well worth a shot. I'm sure it wouldn't be unheard of for a bird or another creature to fly into a tent once and a while before flying back out. If we can verify the boy is in the camo I agree with Dieter and Awie that we would need to act sooner rather than later."

Stella nods at Ida's comments. "True. I was worried it would be risky for it to get hit and discovered as a familiar, but if it's just a quick fly in and out, it should catch anyone by surprise even if discovered."

Stella sends her sparrow back into the camp. Circling from the back of the camp. Hopping from trees before swooping to the ground, pecking for bugs in the grass, then swoops it's way next to Tazok's tent to listen in and poke around the outside for several minutes before flying away. If Aldous was as talkative as he seemed to be with his previous captors, perhaps he would make some noise, or at least shift around. Then the tiny bird quietly pokes its way through a tent flap to get inside, peek around, then exit and return to the trees behind the camp, and then back around to the party to telepathically report to Stella.

Tazok's tent is a large affair, and not just because it houses a formidable half-ogre. As her familiar explores the outside, Stella sees that it's larger than some houses she's seen. It seems to have some thick wooden beams holding it up.

Pausing near the rear of the tent, the sparrow finds another entrance, also guarded by a pair of bandits. The guards don't seem to give the sparrow more than idle glances. The sparrow does hear a voice that could belong to Aldous. It's hard to make out the words through the thick tent fabric, but he seems to be having a calm conversation with at least one other person - someone with a deeper voice than the young Silvershield. And then both voices pause to... laugh? It's a wry chuckle, heavy with weariness. Perhaps Aldous isn't the only prisoner here, and he's found someone to commiserate with.

"Quiet in there!" One of the guards, a Chill hobgoblin, smacks the fabric covering the entrance with his longsword. "Don't think you're so important Tazok will mind us taking a finger or two!"

The deeper voice within the tent returns the threat with a crude summary of what the guard could do with a finger, and the sparrow clearly hears laughter (mocking this time) erupt from the back of the tent. Yes, Stella is sure she hears Aldous' voice in it.

The hobgoblin guard snarls and lifts the tent flap to go inside, and the sparrow catches a glimpse of Aldous sitting on the ground, chained back-to-back with another man.
OOC:
The sparrow could try to slip inside this back entrance to the tent while the guard has the flap open, rather than going through the front. This would deviate from your original plan though. Up to you!

One of the Flaming Fist soldiers moves up to Dieter in a running crouch. "Had a lone scout come close, but we managed to distract him without revealing ourselves. Other than that, it's been quiet."
Oct 26, 2023 6:47 pm
"Bandit or hobgoblin?" dieter asks.
Oct 26, 2023 6:48 pm
"Human, pretty sure. Didn't have any fancy equipment, and was doing a sloppy job."
Oct 26, 2023 6:53 pm
OOC:
Stella is too far to telepathically communicate with her familiar, but she would have instructed it to find a way in and gather more information if possible, so it would probably go in, then leave after getting a look.
Oct 26, 2023 7:02 pm
"Good work, watch out for those hobgoblins you won’t fool them as easily" Dieter says before motioning for him to head back with his eyes.

"the fists had a run in with a bandit but they managed to stay out of sight and redirect him. I recommend we reposition" Dieter reports to Aiwë

The sparrow flits quietly in on the hobgoblin's heels. Tazok's tent seems to be partitioned off in a few places by more of the thick fabric, effectively making separate 'rooms'. This one is small, and gives the hobgoblin guard barely enough room to aim some kicks at the two prisoners.

Aldous' laughter cuts off with a harsh cough as the hobgoblin plants a boot in his sternum, and the other prisoner, an orcish fellow, gets a similar kick to the face.
OOC:
I don't remember Stella and Koveras ever really interacting back in Candlekeep, but she probably saw enough of him then to recognize him here.
Koveras grunts, then leans to one side and to let out a stream of bloody spittle. "When I get out, I'm killing you first, wretch."

The hobgoblin guard snorts and gives the half-orc another heavy kick for good measure, then leaves the tent to return to his post. Stella's sparrow slips out as well, and then surreptitiously makes its way back to where the party waits.

Stella relays what she learns from her familiar.

"He's in there!" she says. "So is that...orcish fellow from Candlekeep, er..." She snaps her fingers trying to remember his name, then just summons a tiny illusion of Koveras' face. "If we're not careful, I worry they might be used as hostages after we engage...But I suppose even if they do get killed, that's not that much of an issue?" Stella says tentatively, the concept finally sinking in after seeing so many people brought back from the dead over the last month.

"What's our next move?"

"Koveras" Dieter says confirming his identity

"…it’s an issue" Dieter says remembering the sensation of returning to the material plane, how weak yet strong he felt as if his body was being forced to live. "There is always consequences even with magic."

Pondering the information that both Stella and the soldier give Ida furrows her brows slightly thinking about the possibilities given the new information "I'm worried the witch we encountered earlier might still be around if we attack and whisk the boy and Tazok away again. Do we feel there is adequate time to wait for night's cover in order to set the camp ablaze and abscond with the hostage during the ensuing chaos? Or would that be a higher risk of having the witch back in the camp assuming she's around at all?" Ida curses absentmindedly in dwarvish under her breath. There were just too many pieces to this and now an additional hostage to try and remove from the camp as well. "I don't think that we can take on the whole camp without at least some advantage or upper hand."
Oct 26, 2023 7:45 pm
Wow I didn’t know they used words like that in the temple Dieter thinks to himself grinning at Ida’s cursing

"True that’s a big unknown." Dieter agrees
Oct 26, 2023 8:41 pm
Aiwë's eyebrows shoot up. "Koveras? He's son of someone important, too. They really are planning something big. Good news for us though, Koveras is a strong Blood. Get him a weapon and he'll be able to help."

When Stella mentions death not being an issue, Aiwë's jaw goes tight but she says nothing. The drumming of her fingers on her chin only speeds up as she thinks.

"Why wait for night? Only half the camp will be bothered, along with half our party. Tensions are already high, let's get moving now. All we need is one careless human, and this patch." She points the Blacktalon patch. "Then we set a fire after things get heated up. The chaos should be upper hand enough."

"I think Stella and I should go in for the boys. Between the two of us we have what we need to patch them up and keep people off of us long enough to regroup if things get bloody."

Dieter motions to a Flaming fist runner "bring us that scout you ran into, we need his body"
Oct 26, 2023 8:54 pm
"If you and Stella are going in then what’s your way in and out" Dieter asks drawing a rough map in the dirt then motioning for her to show him.
Oct 26, 2023 8:56 pm
The soldier nods and moves away, motioning for two others to join him.

They return about ten minutes later with the body of a bandit. "Managed to take him by surprise, sir."

Taking Aiwes words into consideration and Dieters, Ida asks "do you think that Tazok will remember our faces? Maybe put on a bandana or a face cover if you plan to use a uniform to try and disguise yourself. Ida looks back down into the bandit camp and then opens her bag to check her medical supplies. "Act decisively, and take these. Ida hands some clean linen, and high-proof alcohol to Stella "Pour the drink on open wounds or gashes, then wrap them in clean linen. I can help everyone better once we have cleared the camp and found somewhere safe." Pausing briefly Ida also takes out her Warhammer and motions it to Aiwe "If this person you speak of will be an asset they will need a weapon." A distant sad look enters Idas eyes as memories flicker through her head of the good and bad times she had gone through with that weapon "Please be good to it."
