"Yes dieter many people who are attacked don't know the attacker, but a description may be helpful to see if this was a random attack or associated with the group your whole lot is in trouble with." Ida begins retrieving her censer out of her traveling pack and preparing some of her holy intense. The air grows cold as she begins to cast the spell and it almost seems as though the shadows of the trees around them reach for the spell caster. For the second time in 24 hours, there is a billow of sweet-smelling smoke descending on the corpse of a person unknown to her at least.

Not even the summer sun can warm the air chilled by Ida's spell. The dead dwarf sits straight up. The state of his face is better left undescribed, but where used to be healthy eyes now glows that menacing red light, like the dying embers of a shadowed fireplace.

Kagain's head turns toward Ida expectantly.

"Ask him 'What happened to Aldous Silvershield and his bodyguard, Ajantis?'" Stella suggests.

Ida takes a deep breath before facing the grim spectacle before her and starting to ask the questions as the party begins to dictate them to her

A few of the companions might remember Kagain's voice in life: wheezy, as though he'd suffered a throat injury at some point. Now his voice is almost inaudible, but still bears his distinctive accent.

"Cowards! They took the boy. I'd never break a contract, but for them dogs the promise of gold weighed heavier than their reputations. I bet my beard Ajantis is the one who paid them. I'm sure he was the blaggard who shanked me. Heh, never woulda fought me face-to-face."

Dieter fishes his pipe out of his side bag and sticks it in the corner of his mouth. He repositions the empty pipe a few times before squatting down bringing him as close to eye level as he could with the dwarf. After a few moments he breaks eye contact and scans the tree line

"How many mercenaries were there besides you and Ajantis?"
Aug 23, 2023 7:01 pm
"Three...Carlan, Jepson, Brend."
Aug 23, 2023 7:22 pm
Dieter thinks back to his time hanging around the local mercenary shop doing odd jobs and some cheap guard duty. He must have heard of these guys before

Dieter can remember a few details about these men, foremost that they are cruel ruffians who revel in violence. He emembers them being berated for dealing too harshly with common folk while on the job. He probably received a backhand or two himself from them in the past, just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

In fact, he thought they'd been banned from working in Beregost after pushing an old lady down a flight of stairs. Perhaps Kagain grew desperate enough in recent days to hire them again.

Dieter tsks "these are bad men, someone you hire knowing they won’t be around for pay day. Kegain either came out of desperation or to keep them in check."

Stella frowns and nods at Dieter's comments before suggesting another question for Ida to ask.

"After you were stabbed, did they say anything about what they were going to do next?"

"Ajantis got me good. Always hoped I'd go out facing my death. He robbed me of that! They're taking the boy to the bandits. They figure with him as an entry fee, they'll be let right in."

Ida gently takes the hand of the mangled dwarf trying not to cringe in discomfort "Do you have any final wishes in regards to how you would like to be laid to rest? While your life may have been wrongly snatched from you, we can at least let you rest peacefully as to your wishes."

"I always thought I'd be buried in Beregost, the place I called home."
Aug 24, 2023 9:01 pm
"We’ll get you home, Langktrommi" Dieter says unsure if the dwarf can even hear him. Dieter searches the cargo area of the cart to see if he can find an unburn blanket to wrap him in.

respectful term meaning longbeard or old fart

The carriage has been thoroughly burned, but amongst the party there is sure to be an expendable blanket.
Aug 24, 2023 10:04 pm
Seeing that his search is unfruitful Dieter pulls his own blanket out and along with some rope to secure the body once the spell ends.
Aug 24, 2023 10:04 pm
Stella shifts nervously as Dieter takes the time to wrap the dwarf in a blanket. It wasn't like he'd be going anywhere... "Um...wait, so are we heading back to Beregost now? Shouldn't we head after them?" she asks. "They might be long gone, though...so maybe we should just continue to the Friendly Arm Inn? "

She opens her tome and checks the maps she made of the local area, trying to piece together their situation.

"no, we can either take him with us, bury him, or hide him. And we bring him on the way back." Dieter explains as he cinches the last not. "or we could leave him here in the mud" Dieter says with a shrug.
