My thoughts on current in-game situation:

-I'd like to disrupt the enemy's attempt at finding followers. However, I think we were trying to find a covert way of doing so.

-we're not sure if the villagers would side with the enemy, in which case we'd be greatly outnumbered

-we're also unsure of the real magic abilities of these guys. It might be unwise to enter direct confrontation with them only armed with a few weapons!

So, the watch and learn approach seems safest to me at the moment, until we know more?

Good thoughts, let's tug at some of these threads more...

Do you, or anyone, have any ideas about how you could most effectively prevent ppl from wanting to follow him? What would cause them to follow him? Based on the things you've heard and learned.

What do you know about their magic? You know more about it than just what you've heard or "recalled" via knowledge checks in this camp.

I think the villagers expect a demonstration of the magic powers promised in the scrolls. That's why we thought a sabotage of those spells would make them doubt these would be worth following and going into battle for. SOunds like Éothain noticed some bone totems that could be necessary for the magic to work.

We've been warned in Gondor about how powerful these enemies are, I believe

We did see that scorched earth a while back. In a place Astalor had been. Maybe related.

I was initially under the impression that we were just observing the demonstration then with better knowledge plan how to move against him. But now I get the feeling we need to stop him now.
The ritual must be sabotaged so people will reject him. But I have no idea how to do it. A direct confrontation would turn people against us.

If he is a charlatan, we must expose him. If he isn’t, Éothain is prepared to interrupt any spell or visible effect that he can.

So this was you in character just a little bit ago...

Duonhir looks to his companions for guidance.
After that you guys didn't talk. So I was just trying to get you guys to engage each other more.

Not trying to spur you into an action you don't feel prepared to take.

You were each kind of doing things on your own, and forming your own understanding which is good, but it wasn't clear to me if you needed "permission" to strategize and talk to each other.

The ritual is playing out over several minutes, so I wanted to be clear that you have time to talk to each other about what you're seeing and thinking. I suggested it the in character thread, but Dr_B kicked it up here, and that's fine too.

It does seem like youve forgotten some things as players that I don't know if your characters would forget. (Because while for you as players it's been several months, it's only w days or eeks to the characters.)

But that's a part of the game.

I just didn't want to move too fast, and end up having you guys angry that you didn't get to do something you wanted to do.

This is ofc a good instinct too, so if you guys don't see any way to intervene without turning them against you. I'll push the narrative forward.

I have tried rereading previous posts. I don't recall must related to this magic. We found a printing press in a warehouse at one point. There was the case of the blinded statues that's possibly connected somehow. What do the rest of you remember.

Are we on a consensus that something needs to be done about Astalor now?

this is what I remember we know of their magic
GM says:
Cirion finds a sympathetic person eager to share their knowledge of the Black Speech. They read the paper out to him, and it is basically a recruitment pamphlet. It reads rather like something the Gondorian army might say when they send out officers into small towns or poor neighborhoods to recruit young men into service, but also has tones of religiosity, touting the glory of Morgoth - the name of an old god that Cirion is only familiar with as a part of the creation myth of elves and men, an evil force - and also a God-King sorcerer, whom it professes as the King of Men.

This Bangdu Caun says in the paper that they are a general in the growing army of this god-king sorcerer, and he is tasked with raising an army here in Andrast. He speaks of how he has been given the ability to speak with the dead, control lightning, and even raise the dead, by the god-king sorcerer.

And says that he will demonstrate these powers to willing folk who will follow him and gather here at Cuilen Marnhir...

Yes, but only if we can survive being spotted as interlopers and being targeted by the enemy and their fresh recruits...
