There is no one in view right outside the door. It is shameful of them to have abandoned their friend, but you don't get the impression they are coming back. But you also doubt the rest of them will have gone too far

You did not get the impression that they needed to force their way into the baron's home, it seemed like they were welcomed and among friends. Norbert may end up facing whoever remains on his own if you let him go out there alone.

While you know you are not guilty... or at least that you meant no harm, it might be becoming apparent to you that your actions have left a trail of suspicion that could all add up to your looking very guilty in the eyes of the locals. Something in the precise words used rings a bell and if you could just decipher it and follow through on it, you and your party may be able to get your feet under you for the first time since arriving in this valley.

OOC:
This is the culmination of many times you all backed off from learning what is happening. Clearly something happened last night. And you were warned that you had a deadline (two days, now) and that going to sleep might be sub-optimal. :)

Albert tugs at Norbert's sleeve just as he's about to walk out of reach. "Be careful. The others might still be around."

"You might not have heard it, but it's the truth. Does that look like the reaction of a man who is lying? We're trying our best to save this girl." He walks closer to the man. "But, it looks like your heart is in the right place. Even if you've been misled." With a more friendly tone he continues. "What's your name? Let me have a look at that knee. I might be able to help with the pain."

Roald lets Albert take over the interrogation. It gives him some time to think about what had been said already.
The man was pretty sure and correct about the passed events, except for the kidnapping of course.
He hasn't been in the village for 2 years... What if he has a connection to Igor, let's see if that name rings a bell.

Roald's brain is working overtime, but the lack of sleep and the beer from last evening makes it hard to think.

Your prisoner flinches away as the dog passes, then shuffles backwards, trying to move away from you as you approach. He seems genuinely scared of you guys and your reputation.

"M m my name? Le..." He cuts himself off. "Why do you want to know my name?" He demands suspiciously... or is it superstitiously? There are all sorts of superstitions about names.

Norbert acknowledges Alberts warning with an affirmative "Harumpf".

Once outside he suddenly feel very exposed. Looking at the dog calm composure he relaxes a bit but keeps his wit about them. Thinking back at last night he wonders about Roalds behaviour. The change was so sudden and ... and intimidating. Scary even. "I should ask him afterwards." He tells the dog.

Not only to find some food, Norbert gets himself over to the Kitchen. "Hi, is breakfast being served? Can I help?"

The yard outside is full of men, they all eye you warily as you make your way to the kitchen. They are not obviously following you, but you feel surrounded.

The cook, who was none too friendly last night... (and is the one who saw you 'trying to lure a girl away'... could Marisella be the baron's daughter your prisoner was talking about?)... picks up a large ladle and glares at you. "You are not welcome here." She says.

"Figures." Norbert mumbles and turns around again. Feeling the atmosphere in yard he starts as casual as possible back to the room. Keeping the dog close chatting a bit about all the good stuff he could smell in the kitchen.

"Well knowing your name would help when I implore Raynor to heal your wounds." Albert replies in a very casual way. "Besides, I can't keep calling you 'dude' or 'guy'. My name is Albert. Now, let's have a look at that knee." He tries to give off a sense of calm that could put the man at ease.

The angry men in yard are clustered around your route. They have not taken overt action, but you can not be confident they will just let you return.

"I knew it." The dude-guy exclaims. "You want my name so you can work MAGIC against me!"

He pulls away but can not get very far.

"So you don't want help with your knee then? Suit yourself." Albert shrugs. "And for the record. Raynor wouldn't use anything against you. He would use his divine power to aid you. But if you're not willing then there is no point."

"Help!?" Your prisoner exclaims, clutching his knee. "You guys have helped quite enough, thank you! I will just walk it off" You doubt he will walk any time soon, but he does not trust you enough to allow you do anything for him. (Why would he?)

Everything in the valley seems to have been set up to keep you and your party on the backfoot. Something has been messing with these people for a while and your presence here seems to have escalated things somehow.

The mayor seemed caught up in his petty politics and power-plays in the village, from what Theo (the mayor's son) said he has never left the village, nor shown any interest in seeing the surroundings for himself.

How did 'the resistance' know about the kidnap? Why did they assume you were there to help them? OK, on that last on it may be your fault for leading them to believe that, but they seemed primed to accept you as ringleaders. Theo seemed very surprised that his father would have anything to do with any of that or those people.

You did not get to meet the far-away baron, but have heard rumours that there are some sort of family relations between him and this one. People who are not dealing directly with them tend to get them confused with each other and their behaviour and attitude is pretty similar.

Theo also let slip that there was a feud of some sort between his own father and his father's brother. And there was definite tension with Olaf and Christian, but that may have been mostly Olga? Olaf implied that he was not welcome over this side of the valley, and that may have had a 'family' feel to it, but you can't know for sure.

There are patterns and symmetries here. But you don't have all the facts.

The words your prisoner used ring a bell, you are sure you have heard them before... Yes, it was tense and stressful, and rainy and thundery, and you were trying to hide, but those might be the exact same words Nixon said to Olaf at that lone oak tree in the ring of mushrooms in the middle of the night. [ref] And how on earth did he arrange that meeting?

Albert's (or is it Raynor's) miracle turned the tide there, but you get the feeling that, had things not gone that way, Olaf would have suspected you of the kidnap. Maybe it is good you got out of town before the mayor got hold of you, his ear may have similarly poisoned against you.

Albert is fed up with these accusations. Even though they have a base of truth, this guy is obviously being misled and is talking big about things he doesn't even know half of. "Now listen here, boy, .." He says to the man who is not a teenager, but still far enough away from Albert's age to warrant the use of 'boy'. "..I've had just about enough of your accusations. You may believe what you've been told, but it's obvious that you were not a first-hand witness in any of this and that you are just talking 'out your behind'." His face which was gentle and calming earlier turns to annoyed and iritated. "So, before you go around accusing people and ambushing them while they are asleep in a place that offered them sanctum for the night, like some petty thief, maybe you should use that head of yours and consider that things are not always the way others tell you they are. And that actions have consequences." At this his eyes drift to the man's knee.

"In fact, if you'd taken the time to bother investigating what's going on, you would have realized that there is more at play here and some strangers trying to kidnap a girl. You are being manipulated into fighting the wrong enemy. And how exactly do you expect us to react to that, huh? Do enlighten me! Should we just give up and confess to a crime we didn't commit?"

"I'll give you 2 options. Either you let us patch you up and you join our investigation to get to the bottom of this. Or you can sit here with your injury and hope to the gods that you don't run into us again soon. Cause there is a young girl in some serious danger out there! I'm done wasting what little time we have left on you." On the word 'done' he slams the butt of his staff onto the floor for emphasis.

"So, what'll it be?"

Norbert walk back to the door, not making eye-contact with the men in the yard. "The nerve of that guy accusing these heroes of kidnapping the girl". They are probably her only hope of rescue." He tells the dog on his way over.

With an angry muttering the men in the yard par and make way for you to pass through. Not one of them is willing to be the first to attack you and your dog, but you get the strong feeling that any of them would be the second. You are atop a powder-keg.

With a sigh Norbert leans against the door after closing it behind it. As fast as possible without running, Norbert makes his way back to their room.
He listens at the door or raised voices. If it sounds quiet inside he'll go in, if it sounds like an argument he will rush in.
