Character Creation and Advancement

Sep 8, 2022 9:19 pm
Character Creation in a mechanical sense will proceed as outlined in the SRD (or core rules).
Meaning, roll 3d6 --> take the lowest of the three for the Ability's Bonus --> add 10 to find the Ability's Defense (do this for each Ability). If desired, you may swap two of the ability scores.

Concerning Background and character origins: The core rules of Knave present several tables that produce a series of Traits for randomized characters, however, I would like for our three PCs to come from the same place of origin. That being one of a tribe. Originally I thought of a tribe akin to the Native Americans of historical/ancient North America (Cree, Cherokee, Seminole, Creek, et cetera). Therefore, the "backgrounds" could be hunter, scout, herbalist, or something that would reasonably fit into a tribal-like society and culture that reflect the area of your PC's greatest focus and speciality. The other Traits concerning appearance and the like are up to you.

Don't worry about alignment. I prefer to think of alignment as a fluid characteristic based upon your PC's interactions, decisions, et cetera.

For purposes of character flavor and maybe to inspire roleplay. . .choose or create one Vice and one Virtue that is a part of your PC's personality.

Physical Appearance and other associated Traits are primarily up to each player, however, I'd ask that your skin tones and perhaps hair colors be similar. I gave the example of copper/tan skin, but I'm open to whatever you all think.

The PC's will start out as captives, so no need to worry about equipment/possessions.

Start with MAX HP!

Roll for traits below and please chime in with any questions.

That's right. Unarmored is 10 + 1 = 11. So, your bonus is "+1"

Great question! Let's just do MAX HP to start with. Considering the group is three strong and what have you.

Changed my character's name. Naagdhar, means Masculine...

Do you have our tribe name?

Naagdhar was once the leader of the Knugank tribe. Born into an unwanted position of leadership, Naagdhar struggled to keep the peace with both the people, and himself. Providing delicious, yet simple, meals as a cook, he has finally found the peace within himself.

This ok?

Looks like you gave it one! Whatever you three decide as the name is fine. That one looks cool to me! :)

The "Knugank" tribe. Cool.

What kinds of food do you think the tribe's people gathered for cooking? What was Naaghdar's best way to prepare food (best meal)?

Sarona was the daughter and second child of the great shaman of the Knugank tribe.
Her father, the great shaman, didn't know magic. But he did know religious rituals and traditions. He was deemed very wise.
Sarona was always in the shadow of her father and brother. At best, seen as a good prize to be a mighty warrior's wife.
Never really seen for who she really was. A girl in who the spirit of the mighty bear resided. A warrior in heart.
But that would be a path she'd never been allowed to take. Now that she has come of age, an arranged traditional wedding is only a matter of time.

The original concept was that Knugank was my former tribe. But if you guys like it, then cool.
Perhaps Naagdhar is still revered by some of the Knugank tribe to be a fine leader. Sarona?

Naagdhar has always had a grandfatherly like fondness of the child. Extra effort and the finest ingredients always seem to end up in her bowl. Or is it jealousy from her being "kept in the shadows"? If only he could have had the same fate... But still, a warrior she wants to be? Well, he can only protect her for so long. And perhaps that time has already passed...

Also, Knugank is typically a cold forest region? sparsely sprinkled with snow in the winter? Mountains surrounding the village?

How low of fantasy here? Normal forest mammals and berries in Knugank? Or have I been preparing fantasy creatures in my dishes?
Are we even aware of fantasy yet? But we soon will be????

Knugank could be a chillier climate, sure! Let's go with that.

Definitely low-fantasy so far. Other than dreams, some elders having visions, occasional reports of strange beasts and beings, other than that. . .the craziest thing that has happened was Tribe being overran, dispersed, enslaved.

You will encounter fantasy, yes.

Lol I can remember these damn names!!
I keep thinking my name is Ragnarok!!!

BTW, Naagdhar is 40... Hasn't been Chief for (8) years. (Depending on Sarona 's age...)

Very cool. How do you think the Tribe was so easily subdued by the slavers/invaders? Was it their superior technology?

I guess 18/19 or so. Just come of age, be at the age to find a husband.

Much like this yes. I am not sure if I am right but I sort of see it how the Europeans first came to the Americas and had their more advanced ships, armor and weapons.
