tweak/unread_posts

I would love to have a feed (Like Latest Game Posts) that is only all unread threads. Meaning, if you're up to date on all threads, it's completely empty and otherwise, it's all red.

There might be Front Page space issues with yet another list. Maybe, instead of a new block, we can have a toggle for whether the Latest Game Posts block (or any of the others) on that page shows only 'unread' or 'all latest'. Maybe we can pick and choose which of the lists appear on our Front Page Dashboards?

Yea, it doesn't have to be on the front page. I just thought of a link somewhere but I really like the toggle idea. That way, it can be used on either the all latest posts feed or the latest game posts feed

I like the idea of a toggle too, but I can't be arsed to implement it - especially as this is a feature only for the hardcore GP addicts. So I'm going to bury the feature where only the most determined GP adventurers can find it. You might need to answer a riddle to unlock it.

Okay, looks fine. Although, if it's not on the front page then it will probably become the new landing page for power users making the front page rarely used by the people who use the site the most, potentially missing notifications, etc.

Before all the changes to the front page, the Forums page was my landing page. It was a long time before I realized I was missing a ton of notifications.

Also noticed the "mark as unread" feature doesn't work on old games ... I tried to mark my "T'was the Week Before Xmas" game thread as unread to test out this feature and it didn't work.

I don't see why I would want to mark an old game as unread, but thought I'd point it out in case it was a clue to a bigger bug.

Hmmm... more likely that the unread posts feature isn't checking threads marked as read (there are multiple ways of marking something as read - I might have missed one in that gargantuan single line of SQL).

That's already the case for me, just with latest game posts.
And this new feature won't replace latest game posts as my main page. I just think it will be useful to check occasionally and to use when I have tons of posts to work through at once

It worked for a newer game. Started playing around a bit more and realized it only works for posts that have been created on mapdm. So if I post in an older game on mapdm, then click mark unread, it marks that thread as unread. If there isn't a post created on mapdm in a thread, it won't mark it as unread.

It still has the same time limit as latest posts. It just filters out the read ones.

I didn't realize Latest Posts had a time limit, but that makes sense. I thought it was just all posts sorted by Latest. I guess I've never really delved back too far in that thread.

But I wasn't talking about the Latest posts feeds. I meant everywhere.

If I click "mark as unread" under the last post in the "Main Story Thread" of my "T'was the Week Before Xmas" game, it doesn't mark the game as unread anywhere: Latest Post feeds, the game's forum page, the front page, the "Forums" page. I just checked the main site, and it is doesn't work on the main site either.

But, if I make a new post in that thread and then click "mark as unread," it works! So it seems like "mark as unread" doesn't work on old posts.

I don't think I'll ever need to use "mark as unread" on an old post, so I'm not sure it's worth tracking down the bug, but thought I'd mention it.
