The sun dips, making the shaded forest even darker (we're now in dim light, according to the rulez). Surely it will soon be pitch black here, without even the light of moon or stars to show the way.

Xzar squints into the darkness and remarks quietly, "I wanted darkvision like the elves, but 'tis more than just taking their eyes..."

Imoen, who has been chatting happily with the wizard up until this point, gives him a sidelong look and chuckles awkwardly, unsure of exactly what the man means. Before she can ask, however, the screeching begins.

"blarkblarkblarkblark SKREEEEEEEEGLURKLGLURKL!!!"

Runeson recognizes the mad call of gibberlings, as do Xzar and Montaron, who immediately draw weapons. The noise seems to come from all around them, and Runeson can't help but remember the last time he fought the strange monsters.

Unwilling to face gibberlings in such darkness, Xzar conjures his dancing skull-lights, which bathe the immediate scenery green. Dozens of eyes peer back at the party from the darkness all around, and then the gibberlings attack!

Round 1 Player Phase!

Gibberlings! So here's the deal: there are currently 4 groups of baddies since they're coming from all sides (North, East, South, and West). So think of there being 4 'fronts' of the battle, and then whoever isn't in a front rank is in the middle of the party, being protected. You'll need at least 1 person at every front, or the middle people will be easily targeted. Montaron will take 1 of the fronts, so the rest of you have to cover the other 3. You can have up to 2 people per front. So someone can join Montaron if they want to. The party has a few seconds to form up how they want to, so you can just pick a 'front' or 'middle' and make a note of it at the end of your post.

As for how they enemies are grouped, they share a hit point total. So if you happen to do 15 damage to a group, you kill all 3 gibberlings in that group (each gibberling has 5 hp). Make sense? Feel free to ask questions in the Discord!

I FORGOT TO ADD: Attack rolls against these guys ALL HAVE ADVANTAGE. Cuz reasons.

At the screams, Stella spins and shrugs her bow off her shoulder—this time she had it strung and ready. She backs up, turns around, backs up again as the party forms up to fight off enemies from all sides.

Stella's frightened eyes soon flare a fierce orange. They were not going to lose any more.

She knocks an arrow and blows an icy druidic word onto it. The arrow becomes encased in frost, then she draws and sends it into one of the groups of approaching creatures before it explodes into a sphere of icy shards.

(Stella casts Ice Knife. North Front takes 2 damage and two of them must succeed on DEX saves or each take 11 damage, or however the mobs work.)

Once again, Wirrow feels ill at ease with the things the outsiders say. She hasn't forgotten the threats. But as enemies encroach, she puts it aside for the time being, instead planting a phantom arrow solidly through the eye of one of the gibberlings.

Stella's arrow is far more impressive, and Wirrow gives it an appreciative glance and smile.

(Wirrow casts Looming Shadow. East Front takes 12 piercing damage, and one of them takes an additional 1d10 psychic damage on its next turn if it takes any hostile action towards Aiwe.)

Rift has never seen these nasty creatures before, and he's pretty sure he never wants to see them again. He stays close to Montaron (even though the man stole his pie) and pulls out the rapier that he found in his bag. A dashing weapon indeed!

He slashes out at the gibberlings. The tip slashes out and hits first one gibberling, and then another, with almost no effort.

Sheemish steps in front of Stella and activates his chain once more. With a crack it whips it out, barbed edges digging into any flesh it touches.

The group becomes a bastion of order in the middle of churning, screeching chaos. Xzar’s dancing skull-lights make it all even more confusing - and terrifying. The gibberlings fling themselves at the nearest party members, without regard for the safety of themselves or each other. Wiry, muscled bodies with patchy gray fur swing tree branch clubs, makeshift daggers, anything they can get their hands on. A few of the more clever ones leap at the companions’ arms or legs, trying to weigh them down.

Fortunately, these beasties also fall easily. In just seconds the first wave of enemies are cut down, though more feral screams and insane chatterings signal the arrival of the rest of the gibberlings. What's worse, a handful of them are climbing up nearby trees (Climbing Groups 1 and 2).

Montaron growls as some of the gibberlings' attacks reach him, but the stocky halfling might as well be a barbarian for the heed he gives. His short sword does its dirty work, and a considerable pile of crooked bodies grows around the angry little fellow.

Sheemish falls to a knee under the assault, dead gibberlings falling around him. Through sheer determination he stands back up picking up a severed enemy head as he regains his footing. Holding in front of himself with both gauntleted hands there is a whirring sound as a tremendous amount of pressure builds. With the sound of a small cannon, the severed head shoots from his hands at the next incoming group, with broken teeth and bone protruding as it ricochets between the stupid creatures.

Wirrow's question is forgotten in the howl of the gibberlings. They're on them before Aiwë can act, ripping into her flesh. She gasps and staggers. As she blinks the spots away from her eyes, words come to her.

"With that great blow her vision fades
She sinks beneath the waves
Is this where the story ends?"

"KIO-RAAAAA!"
Aiwë's shout echoes far more than it did in the Hearth, her voice ripping into the gibberlings and blowing them away. She draws her sword as the resonance works through her, filling her with strength.

"This will not be her grave!"

Aiwë casts Thunderwave on then North side, destroying the gibberlings. She then casts Cure Wounds on herself and gains 9 hp.
