Characters: Science Team and Ship Crew

Sep 24, 2026 7:00 pm
OOC:
We have 4 characters approved and a new player to get on board. I'm going to take another new player if one applies, but 5 players should work out all right. All current characters are Science Team and/or Expedition support.
I'm planning on introducing two NPCs who will serve as primary Ship Crew, allowing players to concentrate on expedition matters.

"Baron Hiromi Johnson" will not accompany the mission. I would prefer player-characters assume leadership roles, and the Baron is too much of a leader-type to bring him along.

I think every Science Team member should cross-train for Ship Crew duties. With that in mind I'd like you to select one of the following level-0 ship skills.

Pilot-0, Navigator-0, Engineer-0, Gunner-0. Please indicate below which skill you select and try not to duplicate these skills, although our 5th and possibly 6th characters may do so.

Please edit your character to reflect the new 0-level skill.

NOTE: The ship is equipped with 6 standard Staterooms and 1 deluxe 'suite'. Our ship's NPC crew will be a 'couple' (of sorts) and will occupy the suite.

My PC already has Gunner and Pilot, so my preference, in order, is Navigation or Engineering.

Good! Somehow I missed that. Sorry about that! Since you've got shipboard skills already perhaps you'd like to take VaccSuit-0 or Computer-0.

Based on my PC’s home world, Crote, I’ll take Vacc Suit.

EDIT:
Soren already has J-O-T, but will taker Pilot-0 and Vacc Suit-0 if that is allowed, unless there is another Pilot already in the team?
OOC:
IIRC,

Dr. Rohan Yala has ship skills with Pilot-2, Navi-2 and Engineering-1, so he is a very good pilot

Then
Riff has Pilot-1 and Gunnery-1 So we have a good gunner.

Dr. Cole can teach us anything.....I think (smile)

Soren has.... well Soren has Vacc Suit-0 and Engineering-0 ?? I guess...did I say he has JOT

He can talk his way out of things and he knows...people...and things....Did I mention he has J-O-T???

I'm showing Dr. Yala's skills as:

Skills
Admin - 1
Computer - 1
GravVehicle (air/raft) - 1
Gun Combat (gauss pistol) - 1
History - 1
JoT - 1
Navigation - 1
Survival - 1
Xenoarcheology - 2
Vacc Suit - 1
-----

Am I missing something?

So this is what I see per the 3 'essential' Starship Skills (Pilot, Navigation, Engineer):

Riff: Pilot-1
Yala: Navigation-1

All the seconday Starship skills are covered, I think. Except Steward. Computer, Gunnery, Medic, Electronics, Mechanic.

A new character should be coming on board, I hope soon. They may choose to be more 'Crew' than 'Science', but we'll see.

If I add NPC Crew they'll fill in whatever gaps remain.

No My Bad. I had an earlier version that Llogan sent me when he was developing his character...

Soren can count as a Steward with JOT, right?

Yeah, well sort of. J-o-T to me represents stepping up and improvising when things are 'tight', not a substitute for skill on an ongoing basis.

Anyway, if the ship is not taking on paying passengers Steward is not essential. And Maxi the robot can fulfill Steward functions. Don't forget ol' Maxi. They're no Rosie, you know, but close!

@GM Dave

Your list of skills is correct. Dr. Yala has Nav - 1. I chose that skill because I want Rohan to be able to navigate on a planet's surface. But, I can extend the skill to include astrogation.

Classic Traveller describes "Navigation" as specific to interplanetary and interstellar route planning. I would count it for Land Navigation, too.

The Book-6 "Scouts" has a "Survey" skill which we could incorporate if you feel that represents the character's expertise more accurately. I can get the details of that if needed.

I think Survey will be a better match for Dr. Yala.
I'll wait until the end to choose a ship's skill then pick up what is needed.

Survey:
The individual is skilled in the art and science of mhping and charting
star systems.

Survey is a skill conferring expertise in the various areas used to produce accurate
maps and directories of Imperial territory and the frontiers. Survey allows an in-
dividual to accurately determine the characteristics of an unknown or unclassified
world, and to compile its UPP. It allows an individual to correctly produce maps
and information about star systems as well.

Survey as a skill is learned in the Scouts to enable accurate mapping and studies
of worlds and systems. It is most useful when an individual is confronted with
unknown worlds and must deal with them.

(Book 6 "Scouts")

Survey sounds like a better fit for Dr. Yala.

Can these sensors be used to scan planets for large scale anomalies?

Can Survey be used to map an archeological dig site?

YES!

(The expedition will already have Scout Survey data that is decades old and in most cases incomplete and/or sloppily done. Still, this data is in part what Baron Johnson used to select the target areas. So you do not have to duplicate what has gone before, just improve on it and supplement it. The emphasis of the game will be on getting down and dirty on planet surfaces to investigate potential dig sites and to do preliminary work related to that. You want to find those valuable ancient Artefacts!

Ok, so… I’m late to the party… what we got, what we need? I saw some mention in passing about psionics, to put in my extinct copper pieces, a limited psionic undercurrent would be fine with me… something like a sliver of my previous character or maybe just a kinda spider sense-kind of thing…

Hello Packratt!
I'm glad to see you back!

GM Dave listed skills we're missing about 10 posts back.

This is turning out to be an academic group who will go on expeditions to unearth the past with particular interests in the Ancients. IIRC, most of the party are academics. Muns is a dealer in antiquities.

So, who is running the ship?
Sep 26, 2026 2:10 am
The ship and crew are provided for the expeditions. The game is leaning toward the university providing the transportation, and GM Dave has given us a Safari Ship along with a crew.

Right now, the expeditions are funded by grants from various groups and perhaps the Imperium but nothing has been decided. It's probably not important where the funding comes from but it fleshes out the story a little.

This game will have a little Indiana Jones in it. Maybe that will help you in character creation. IDK how to view other character sheets and I think everyone has made their characters public. if you know how to view the sheets, take a look and let me know how to view them.
