● Pitch

The daylight streets of Montréal are abuzz with life in the summer. Both the locals and the hordes of tourists flood the myriad of festivals and concerts taking place in the city. At night a different kind of sound is reverberating throughout the dark alleyways, abandoned churches and deep catacombs underneath the kine feet. A noise that is unperceivable, but is heard, felt. In the beating of the drums, the harmony of the revenant's choir, in the intense and passionate recitals of the passages from the book before communal ritae. A sickening, corrupting voice that gets harder and harder to resist. A whisper that breaks the weak and wears down the strong who can withstand its unseen influence. Of evil, of disease, of discord. An ancient song that affects the land, throngs of mortals and Cainite alike. Hum.

● Overview

"Hum" is a Sabbat chronicle taking place in Montréal, Canada, also known as City of Black Miracles, using Revised/V20 rules. This is an open world / sandbox style game, which makes it a great fit for players who enjoy creating their own scenes and events, and taking an active role in moving the story along, rather than follow direction in a more defined plotline. While the ultimate course of action will be up to the players, the game is not intended to be a fighting simulator. I'm also not a strict adherent of RAW philosophy, so if you're looking for a by-the-book combat extravaganza - this is not it.

The basic premise is that the characters arrive in Montréal to attend Litany of Blood (a great Sabbat conference / remembrance ceremony), separately, and form the pack during the game.

The main themes are those of Search - whether inner - for something like clarity, meaning, sanity; or outer - for a person, safety, a place to belong or the next victim; and Faith - the universal power that permeates the island of Montréal and its surroundings.

The mood is one of melancholy, pressing paranoia and choleric anxiety, uncertainty, change and chaos - something is about to give in, to shift, to emerge and every Cainite in the city can sense it.

The setting is modern, the game taking place in early 2000s, around 2006 or so.

I don't use AI for anything, but there are a few generated images left in my art folder, which might (but unlikely) to surface as NPC portraits. I would prefer players not use generative AI at all, but making an avatar or two for you character would not be a deal breaker.

● Applications

First I'd like to know a little bit about your character concept. What are they about, what is their personality like? Next, I'd like to know what you want from a game like this. Which story points and themes are exciting to you and which you could do without? The idea here is to gather a group of players AND characters who are compatible with both each other and myself, to ensure our collective satisfaction and longevity of the game. You can either leave your concepts here in the thread (please make them private notes if there are any nsfw themes present) or send them via PM.
All the usual Sabbat Clans and Bloodlines are up, including Ahrimanes, but excluding Harbingers (as they are mostly Elders) and Tremere (mostly dead). Everything else is a tentative maybe, except perished Dark Ages lines like Lamia and Noiad, which are out.
Age wise you can pick anything in the "fresh shovelhead - young ancilla" range, up to 100 years of undeath.
More metaplot involved concepts are allowed (and even cautiously encouraged), provided they make sense and don't dip too much into deep lore / other splats.

● Adult themes

"Montréal by Night", the book upon which this chronicle is based, was one of the few books originally published under "Black Dog" imprint by WW, denoting adult contents. As such, you can expect to potentially encounter a whole gamut of explicit themes and topics, like gore, swearing, body horror and sex. If you can imagine something horrible, it has probably happened in this version of Montréal somewhere.

It's important to note, however, that this is not a fetish, erp or a wish fulfillment game. The awful things that Sabbat vampires do is simply their way of coping with the horror of their unnatural condition, a lens through which you can roleplay and experience the vampiric condition anew.

While we will discuss boundaries during "Session 0", the game is likely to be graphic in nature. Should any situation arise, we'll address it and try to find a way forward, altering, changing or adjusting content as needed, rather than defaulting to any set safety tools, like "X-Cards" or "Lines & Veils". At the end of the day player's comfort and safety comes first, but it is also important to understand what kind of game you'll be joining. Forewarned is forearmed, as they say.

● Post frequency

Varied. A combat scene might necessitate a faster rate of short messages to keep the action going, while a protracted philosophical discussion with adherent of different Path can be settled in a couple sizable posts. To set some minimal number up, looking for at least 2 to 3 meaningful in-game posts a week.

● Dying, PVP and loss of control

Dying is technically a possibility, but I make it no goal of mine to try and kill the players. Should you enter a situation where Final Death is an actual possibility, I'll make sure to warn you beforehand.

This is NOT a PVP game. While arguments leading to physical resolutions, or even Monomancy, are fine, should they organically arise, going into this with a hostile mindset is not. The banhammer will be landing swiftly if it becomes apparent that you're just here to screw with the other players.

Complete loss of control or autonomy over your character will never happen without your explicit consent, such as NPC's use Dominate. More subtle alterations, like emotional changes brought on by Presence discipline or Vinculum bonds are expected to be roleplayed, but will also be discussed prior to going into effect. Players are expected to extend each other the same courtesy.

● Amount of players and experience level

Looking for at least 4 people, with a tentative maximum of 6. While deep understanding of the rules or setting is not necessary, some familiarity with the basics of both (like having V20 core near or reading through free Revised quickstart) is required.

That is all. Feel free ask any questions here or via PM.

Good evening.

I would love to play or be allowed to read this as a spectator, since I am a huge vampire fan.

I don't mind casual readers, so if all other players are okay with it - you're more than welcome to read along. As for playing - I just opened the game today, so plenty of time to come up with a concept or two, as per "Applications" portion of the game info and apply. I threw the ad in multiple spaces online, so we'll see what'll come up.

Thinking on this- possibly a concept along the lines of a Revenant who was embraced as a reward for his service.

Very much still looking.

I've been in line for a few Vampire games that have always folded early. I am interested but my life is complicated at the moment and I'd like you to know that first. I am interested and I'd like to apply if you'll have me.

Kk, I'll shoot you an app, going to be a minute since it's been a couple years since I played v20, so need to refamiliarize myself.

I imagine most of us can't claim to lead a stress-free, easy lives, myself included. Whether now is good time to join this (or a) game is question only you can answer. I would only ask to be informed of any breaks you need to take or dips in posting rate (no reasoning needed, obviously), so we could adjust your character's storyline and the main plot in general.

Also for folk who might be reluctant to apply thinking that this has filled already or anything like that - very much the opposite. It has been only 3 days, and I'll be keeping this open at least till next weekend or until a compatible pack is assembled. As of this moment, I mostly just answered few questions here and on reddit. Only 1 actual application, also on reddit. So if you're interested in a more lore-involved, dark Sabbat game - feel free to apply or ask any questions. I'm here answer and clarify anything.

Yes, I think I would like to try. I know there are different ages or generations of vampires. Which should we be creating?

The v20, which I think I have, is oddly organized but I shall try to craft something today.

@Emberskyes no sheet work is necessary at this stage. What I want to know is who you want to play (personality wise) and what aspects of the game you are interested in. While I'm not looking to assemble a pack of identical vampires, there are some concepts that work better with the others. As an example, I remember receiving a well written, solid concept for the last VTM game, but you could tell that the character was very assertive, perhaps to the point of being aggressive, while the rest of the pack was decidedly less so. So I opted for a more fitting concept, and that person ended up being the last player standing, before they also had to leave due to IRL stuff and the game shut down.

About age and Generation. Age is more important for the concept, as that dictates much of character's upbringing and identity. V6 alpha had a really interesting bit, where they suggest picking a "decade that shaped your character the most". Knowing when they were born and how long they spend as a vampire is much more important than knowing which Generation they are. Generation, at the end of the day, is simply how potent your vampire's natural abilities are. The lower the Generation (closer to the First vampire) - the stronger you are. There are other, social aspects of it as well, but that is better left for Session 0.

Howdy hey! So I'm going to do things a bit out of order and tell you about me and then about the concept, cause that just makes more sense in my head. I really like the idea of exploring what vampires are like outside of the strict rules of the camarilla (as I haven't played in a Sabbat game). And I also really like the idea of searching for humanity as a monster in a monstrous place, surrounded by people who have already abandoned such an ideal. I'm not super excited by body horror as a player. Not saying not to include it (this is vampire after all), just as a player it's usually not something that I'm particularly excited about, though I wouldn't say it's a veil either.

Below are two character concepts in a private note

Hi, I would love to join, here's my application. I'm new to Vampires as a whole but am slowly reading through the book. Or at least part of it.

What I'm most interested in exploring in the game
Internal conflict; especially when shown outwardly, power dynamics in small groups/between individuals, faith as a tool, ethics in an amoral society. Ethics, risk management, tradition, and discussion surrounding the aftermath of loss of control.

character concept
Backstory: A vampire who's turning and subsequent undeath was used to make them an "art piece". They were manipulated and controlled. In the early days every action was monitored and every teaching was calculated. A scar was cultivated on their back, a growing, irregular, web of cuts producing ugly yet mesmerizing patterns. After some time they gained the freedom to walk and talk with other vampires. A few years there after they managed to run away. Searching for greener pastures in the Sabbat.

Mentality/personality: They deal with a constant internal confusion between what their own thoughts/emotions are, and what thoughts/emotions were trained into them by their master. Outwardly they switch between; charismatic and authoritative; and a people pleasing pushover. Internally they strive for power and control. Although they're not exactly sure where this drive comes from. Their "search" is both for power and control, but also for figuring out exactly who they are.

Clan: The character is written with Toreador in mind, but I can imagine it being some Sabbat clan too; although I don't know which as I do not have a complete list.

Age: 99 and a deathday in a week

everything in this post is up for negotiation

Hi! I messaged on reddit today! Still looking for apps?

If so, here's my character concept! Dr. Ivan Demikhov, a Tzimisce who has an obsession with turning his body into the perfect vessel through flesh-crafting! He's a doctor, so he still has an inner struggle to heal mortals rather than treat them just as food or experiments. He's power hungry though, and willing to do quite a bit to advance his status and further his research, which is why he has left the European continent! His sire was also a doctor, who found his soon to be childe's mind too good to be wasted on passing away when Ivan's time would inevitably come. Hence why he was sired, Ivan views this as a blessing, one step closer to a perfect form, near immortality! He is about 50 years into his undeath.

If he doesn't work out, I have a second concept: A Nosferatu Antibru, Clark Griffin, aka "Weasel" who was driven out of the Camarilla for scheming against a rival of his, a Tremere named Damien Jensen, who politically pulled strings to have him executed, but he fled to Sabbat territory before the execution, he may be an arms dealer, but he genuinely cares about the homeless folk and down on their luck he employs as smugglers and informants. He is slightly older than Ivan at 75 years of undeath.

Weasel is a schemer and a self-preservationist at his core, but he enjoys playing vampire politics, he was the go to guy for blackmail and weaponry in his old haunts before being run out of there by Damien and the Tremere. Weasel has an odd relationship with his sire, they were in a private military contracting firm together at the time of Weasel's embrace, where Weasel would have taken a fatal wound had it not been for his sire turning him, after their contract was up, his sire, a man named Gareth Smith, said he couldn't take Weasel with him back to his domain due to siring without permission. However, he would keep in contact and offer advice due to their nature as brothers in arms during their time in the PMC, Gareth has been supportive of Weasel's decision to abandon the Camarilla in order to save his unlife, as Gareth's own loyalty to the Ivory Tower is tenuous at best due to being figuratively burned several times in his attempts at working his way up the vampiric hierarchy.

Themes I'd like explored: The cost of the pursuit of power and perfection, vampire politicking and backroom deals, discovering ancient knowledge and secrets. The price of revenge.

I'm willing to compromise on some aspects of my characters if you think it would make them better fits for the group.

I'm leaning more into playing my second concept but if a Nosferatu turned Sabbat seems too out there for the game or not fitting the mold of the group, I'd be down to play my Tzimisce!
