Interest check: Budding superheroes in grounded MCU (just before BoNY)

New here, and already intrigued by some of the games and discussions I've seen. I'm wondering whether this concept for an MCU game would catch anybody's interest.

The premise:

3–4 college students in New York, February 2012. They move into a new apartment between Manhattanville and Harlem. Eventually something goes wrong, after which they begin discovering that they can do things no human should be able to do.

The following months involve student life, neighborhood problems, relationships, investigation and trying to understand and control these emerging abilities... until the skies open in May and the Battle of New York changes the world. The PCs will be caught in the middle of it.

The style:

Grounded, RP-heavy gaming in a plausible, responsive world. PCs can have a major impact, but the world doesn't revolve around them. There are independent story spines that continue whether the PCs engage with them or not; they can alter them substantially, sometimes even derail them.

I research the setting heavily. Manhattan feels as much like real 2012 Manhattan as I can make it, with the MCU timeline running underneath. Even the PCs' apartment uses the actual layout of the real building. Ordinary college, home and neighborhood life remains part of the game rather than just filler between superhero events.

Character creation:

Players create the concepts, I build the initial stats from them, and then we tweak them together until we're both happy. A lot of leeway within the basic premise; college-age PCs are strongly recommended.

System:

Phoenix RPS, my own system, developed and used through about 35 years of tabletop play with 50+ people in total. Feedback has been excellent oer the past 10 years or so (when last tweaks were done). No previous familiarity required.

One other disclosure: I use LLM tools for secretarial/continuity work, bookkeeping, research assistance, and occasional NPC images or illustrations. The game itself is GM'd by me, not by an AI.

Me (since I'm new here):

New to RPoL, but I've been GMing TTRPGs for roughly 35 years. I tend to run long, character-heavy campaigns with fairly detailed worlds, and Phoenix is the system that's grown out of those games over the years. I like giving players substantial freedom and then letting the world respond rather than steering things to a predetermined plot. Also, wrote a scifi novel (self-published).

Any takers, or feedback?

I'll put in a tentative interested, but yes - are there any broad-strokes details on the system?

Can you give any details on the system?

Absolutely. Essentially there's a number of attributes, and under each there are skills. Essentially it works like this:

- Skills have levels (typically 1-4, sometimes 5, for characters of this level)
- Whenever they use a skill they roll as many d20's as the skill level and look at the highest roll
- Nat 1's cancel highest roll
- There is no single number to hit; success comes in shades of grey, not on/off; success level bands are at 5, 10, 15, 18, 20. Modifiers to roll apply.

There are no hit points as such - for incoming damage, we look at PC/NPC weight, armour (if any), damage location and incoming damage to determine the outcome. The system is realistic (or tries to be) - a gunshot may well be lethal (unless you have suitable superpowers of course).

Interested, to be fully transparent this is very different then any of the games I usually play/GM but when I look for games to play in I'm generally looking for something roleplay heavy which this seems like it'll be.

So feel free to give my spot to someone else if there is enough interest, but this is something I'd be up for trying.

I enjoy narrative/RP heavy Supers games & that marks me as interested. While I cut my Roleplaying teeth on D&D (about 40 years back) the games I've played the longest have all been Supers games. Mayfair's DC HEROES, V&V, GURPS Supers, TSR's Marvel system...I've played a fair amount of Supers systems and settings. I'm definitely intrigued by the social side of Supers and would like to explore that in the MCU.

That all sounds interesting, and I've not played as many supers games as I would like, so I'll call myself definitely interested

I would probably be interested in this. I've not played in a supers RPG for some time, and it might scratch an itch I have.

I'd be up for some RP heavy superhero shenanigans

Seems like here'd be a fair amount of interest - but something surprising came up IRL and I can't dedicate time for this right now afterall. I'll return to this later perhaps. :-(
