Here on gamersplane we are used to have this OOC thread for anything you want to discuss as a layer not as your character
I encourage you to us this Out-Of-Character thread to ask DM questions when narrative is lackinng details you want to know (are there any bushed to hide, any tree to climb up, any stone to throw. What material are doors made of, etc.

This thread will also usually include

- players discussing party strategy or how they (as players) want story to advance
- DM asking for player decisions
- player asks DM questions like "can I do X", "how would you rule this", etc.
- want to tell everyone you are having a vacation and will not be able to post a few day
- rules questions
- questions about using this sire
Sep 8, 2026 5:15 pm
The game thread is locked until all players finish their PC, but feel free to read my first post and ask any questions about it here in out of character thread.

I have a question regarding the book our characters found in the abandoned manor. Were they able to decipher the shaky handwriting and understand it?
Sep 10, 2026 7:35 pm
I went with survival for the first roll, as he's essentially "tracking" signs of passage. Hope that's an okay first post to start us off with!

Yes. It wasn't hard, just time consuming.
What you learned is described in this thread

I love your post. Dice roll not so much - no luck this time, will see what others have to offer.
Sep 10, 2026 7:55 pm
I basically followed suit with the first post, but I did not have the option to post as my character
Sep 10, 2026 8:07 pm
@MacConnell you will only be able to do that when I approve your character
and I will only approve your character when you finish the minimal requirements (spell list) I asked you to do for your PC
Sep 10, 2026 8:43 pm
Spell List should be complete. I am working on Feats.
Sep 10, 2026 8:47 pm
Approved but I feel like list is too short. Let's discuss tomorrow

I guess I need to work again bit harder to describe a challenge and why i think it will require everyone to work on solving the issue. Will do that with my Sunday post.

I realize I only mentioned this in passing before we started, but is it chill for us to start with the assumption that I cast Find Familiar as a ritual in the morning? I would like to have my lil owl buddy.
Sep 11, 2026 9:30 pm
Sure. What a wizard without a familiar? Well until it takes 1 point of damage that is. Just kidding. I guess.
You have your familiar with you right now.

May I please ask everyone to post into this thread (in addition to IC post in game thread):
1. A short overview of the action your PC does
2. (most importantly) how do you think that action would help party to find which way you need to go

Or maybe you find this first challenge too hard or too confusing? Let's also vote what we do about this challenge of my own design :

Choose one or more options you are fine with Multi Public

Skip this challenge and move to next
I don't want no challenges. Give me a random combat encounter instead
I have fun with this challenge, let's keep trying to crack it
I want DM to show with example how he want us to solve this challenge

Well, my character tried to follow @MrSaxon 's character into the foggy fog while keeping an eyes for anything suspicious in this foggy. (Im confuse lol)

Yeah, as i mention, my character's contribution is keeping an eyes on suspicious things.

You know what, im already fun with dm's description (specially the divorced bees😂), im choosing all of them.

Here is my answer:
1. Garren tries to climb over the landslide and look for the continuation of the path.
2. If he gets over the landslide, he might catch sight of the path.

Ocelot is specifically looking for signs of passage of other people, if anyone has transversed the area after the landslide. Secondly, to aid in moving us all along, he will try to determine if there is a manageable path to take to continue in the correct direction.
Sep 12, 2026 8:20 pm
1. Atticus is using his telepathic connection to his familiar to scout ahead. He's looking for anything that might either give a clue to the direction of their destination, such as landmarks or signs of people passing in a given direction, or perhaps she can see some kind of pattern in the landscape from above that we can't see from down here. I rolled perception for this, hope that's cool.
2. If the familiar can spot any such landmark or sign of passage, that would at least suggest a direction. If not, they will at least have tried.
Sep 13, 2026 7:30 am
Good, it is clear to me now, thanks for writing these details

I guess I finally know where I made a mistake
Did you guys read settings and lore thread?
Quote:
It is a ghost settlement. Decades ago, relentless monster attacks forced the residents to abandon their homes in terror.
I assumed that this will help you realize the road you have been following had no evidence of any human travelling that road for years
I should have explicitly stated the road is overgrown and such.

@MacConnell with that above information in mind would you like to try a different action?

@solose just note - I did assume all characters always keep eye open ... do you insist your only keep eyes open when you explicitly say so? Just joking. Bottom line - I have no idea how to turn something suspicious into a help finding path. If you keep insisting on finding something suspicious I can only throw some monsters on your party to fight - is that your goal, I hope not.

…Suspicious if there's something hidden, like hidding road, or as you mention before, monster(s).
So i forgot to tell you, i roll acrobatics so i can cross the landslide properly (idk if you use crit success/failure on skills🤷), and survival is for suspicious thingy. (Or it is perception?🤔)
Edit: after seeing dm's rule about perception, it is obvious survival isn't the right answer, i guess survival is for tracking, so… maybe i remaking krynt's action little more…?

OK got it - maybe someone hid the new road from you :) that would be a DC 20

I specifically asked to pick on skill and roll twice for possible advantage/disadvantage You rolled 8 and I will ignore 1 unless I decide that there is a good reason to apply disadvantage to that roll. And I don't see a reason to
For example I will apply disadvantage to wizard's attempt to explore through animal eyes, because looking at the world through animal eyes is not the same as looking through your own

Dm, i roll perception for something suspicious, do you allow it?

And do you don't mind rolling two double dice for skills? (Acrobatics, perception)
Edit: rolling double perception for now…

Apologies, everyone. I'm not really sure what I'm meant to be doing and I think it's a Me thing rather a Game thing. It's been a while since I've played either a D&D game or a PBEM game, and that's probably part of it, but I've re-read the posts here several times and I'm still stumped. As I said, it's obviously a Me thing. Rather than frustrate myself, and frustrate you all as I inevitably get things wrong or simply decline to post because I'm not sure what's expected, I'm going to step out here before the game gets into full swing.

I wish you all well.

Maybe, just maybe I know what you are talking about. As a player I have had that feeling in some PbP games where "I don't know what could I possibly do here", but most of the time if I spend a day or two thinking about situation I would eventually come up with an action that even if don't contribute to party success, at least seems fun

And by the way - It is maybe actually partially my fault - I messed up with confusing / incomplete first post, may I ask you to stay and see my next post. And I totally understand if you decide to leave anyway

That’s a shame to hear. I thought your character made a wise choice. The most important thing isn't making smart decisions, but having fun together.

I think people new to this hobby (or the format) can often feel a lot of pressure to "perform", and I get that. But the whole point of asynchronous PbP is that there isn't so much of a rush to decide and figure things out. There's no shame in being confused. You're not slowing anybody down, everything's okay. If you're still around to see this, I would urge you to reconsider. Your writing is great :)
Sep 14, 2026 9:34 pm
@GreyWord , may i have a question? So, if im looking for footprint, do i need to roll survival? Or perception?
Sep 15, 2026 3:57 am
Most important to me is what an action is. Do you just keep an eye for it while walking or you have everyone to halt and let you search the forest. Systematic searching for tracks would be certainly a survival.

Freely translated from Goblin, it meant: "Haha! Let’s speak Goblin from now on, brothers." He had also learned the language, quite by accident.

Lovely posts, inspired me to come up with (did I tell you, I guess I did not, but first part of this game is hind of sandbox/world building - all I have is map picture, every location, npc, event or discovery is my improvisation) will narrate the results in few hours

it is any time of day you want it to be - we will not be measuring time or accounting rations in this oneshot, you can hunt, take time and take your long rests whenever you want ... until I explicitly say otherwise because time is ticking and something bad is going to happen soon
Sep 15, 2026 12:49 pm

played in a few games here GP so far. always thought it would be nice to see other party member's char sheet. just happened to click on krynt's char img and saw the char sheet, but didn't work for garran or atticus "No Character Found".
Sep 16, 2026 5:29 am
@PbPgameOn It is player's decision if they allow other players to see their charactersheets (though UX for that is counter intuitive - you go to your character list and press icon right of pencil, having tooltip "Add to Library"). And it appears Library is something other players could visit and read

@solose there is a difference between "flowing river" and "river stone", isn't there? I was narrating second not the first, didn't I? I can - if you wish - narrate the herbs are hallucinogens and made your PC see river where there is just a fireplace , or feel free edit your post if that was simply your as a player mistake

It feels unnecessary of you, GreyWord, to take issue with Solose's post. You wrote "river stones," which brings a river to mind. You don't need to make fun of the situation by mentioning hallucinations.

Now it's my turn to be confused, tell me which item need to clarify:
1. There is no river in the scene, I have never narrated any river
2. When I say "River stones" I mean a naturally smoothed, rounded rocks (most probably picked from river and carried all the way over to here)

I'd like to discuss some with you players. It is less issue at the table, but a real issue at PbP that we could go into endless loop - every time DM narrate PC gathered a tiny bit of information player could ask for more and more and more

To avoid that I am always applying the rule Give All the Information Up Front
I am going to narrate with my next post that you spend a lot of time checking between the very few items in the camp to discover no additional information. Please don't take it personal. I just want to get story moving

If you don't think you want to make the decision in character here is the poll for decision I would like you all to make

What now? Public

Keep searching the road yourself as planned before
Patiently waiting for person to return to the camp
Go west searching that person, following tracks
Sep 17, 2026 1:00 pm
If we waiting for someone return, it would be waste of times.
If we search the road our own, we didn't even knew where to start. Its like puzzle piece without the frames.
The only logical thing is to follow the tract, maybe we even knew who the person we didn't know.
But again, Krynt agree to party's plan, he just suggesting.
Sep 17, 2026 1:11 pm
There is another problem - you don't know if person
- has the knowledge you seek
- will want to share that knowledge (for free)

My point is - this not the test of your ability to choose the right decision. The only question is - which of 3 you would love me to narrate, which sound more fun, i.e. you are actually choosing amog
1. Just roll some survival for navigating and DM put some insignificant penalty for failed roll, but we continue to next checkoint
2. Run a social encounter that if successful will prevent the navigation roll above, if failed - still do the roll
3. Same as 2 but we roll survival to find tracks before we do 2
Sep 17, 2026 1:15 pm
Seems to me that the option of tracking this person gives us the most amount of "content" :P
Sep 17, 2026 5:58 pm
#3 get to track and social
Sep 17, 2026 9:39 pm
Agree!
Sep 23, 2026 2:31 pm

How to cross bridge (select all you agree with) Multi Public

Let's go together, don't split
Split, and I volunteer to go first
Split, but I don't go first
Other (explain)
Sep 24, 2026 7:05 pm
BTW, are there any rules or such for post limits within a certain time frame? Like I feel sometimes if certain people are on at the same time, especially with the GM, it could keep going back and forth without others getting to do something. I don't want to happen to make a slip with expectations in this area. Thanks!
Sep 24, 2026 7:08 pm
I plan to pause for a bit, but had just wanted to do my cleric duties while I thought about them :)
Sep 24, 2026 7:13 pm
No limits. I will slow down by not posting when I want let everyone react.
So feel free to post any time you have something to say
Sep 24, 2026 7:19 pm
Okay, sounds good.

Another question. For keeping track of spell slots and HPs and such, is it expected to do this in the character sheet? Or would it be better to include my status at the bottom of each post? Or something else that's usually done?
Sep 24, 2026 7:38 pm
Usually on your charactersheet only.
Sep 25, 2026 7:33 am
the road (overgrown, but well visible) continues on the other side of the bridge and I will narrate you following the road until you reach next challenge. You have an opportunity to role-play your character impression of this challenge (or provide me your as player feedback to that challenge) before I drop next challenge on you
Sep 26, 2026 8:08 am
@Kyvern it does not matter this time as 20+anything is sufficient, but for future
1 You can do guidance on yourself, feel free to always roll that +1d4 out of combat (if there are reason you can't do I will simply extract that from total)
2 Please double check your chracterhseet say you have +2 to investigation but you did 1d20+4 roll

OOC:
One person rolls Wisdom(Nature) check to predict the best moment to perform the task…
Isn't Nature is Int? Are you asking to roll Nature check with Wisdom, or this is an error?
Sep 26, 2026 9:53 am
I suggest to read carefully DnD Ability Checks chapter

I know many communities use jargon "Skill Check" such as roll "Nature Skill check", but this is just a jargon or a shorter way of saying make an Intelligence Ability check and Add your Proficiency Bonus to an ability check because the DM determined that a skill proficiency is relevant to the check

In rules "PC Make a Wisdom Check To Notice things in the environment"
And I have determined that Nature skill proficiency would allow you to add your Proficiency Bonus to your roll

P.S. I don't have anything about that jargon, please do keep using it. But please remember that Nature proficiency is typically associated with Int, but I may seldom apply what is specifically described in the rules under "Skills with Different Abilities"
Sep 26, 2026 9:56 am
Ok, i understand now. So using wis for nature is legal lol.
Sep 26, 2026 10:21 am
You are not using wisdom for nature, you are using your nature skills for wisdom ability check, that's both RAW and RAI
Quote:
An ability check is named for the ability modifier it uses: a Strength check, an Intelligence check, and so on.
and
Quote:
Add your Proficiency Bonus to an ability check when the DM determines that a skill or tool proficiency is relevant to the check and you have that proficiency
But if you are used to think of it upside down, then yes, you are absolutely right - rules allow DM to decide
PC may use Wisdom for nature or Str for Intimidation or
use Wisdom nothing check IF the DM determines that no skill or tool proficiency is relevant
use Intelligence for nothing check IF the DM determines that no skill or tool proficiency is relevant
...
