I would like to encourage you to explore gamerslane features you will be using in the game:
1. GO to Characters and create your first character using DnD template
https://i.postimg.cc/HszxVTnb/file3.png
2. Fill inn some random stuff and add a PC avatar (UX isn't 100% intuitive there, so please take your time to undersand how to do that)
3. Join that test character to this game (go to game page i.e. by this link) and submit character
4. Come back here and tell me you did that - I will need to approve your character
5. Once character approved you will "post as" your character in this thread and we will learn how to add some skill checks attack rolls to your posts. Will get to that once you did first steps
Sep 4, 2026 10:55 am
If you have any trouble going through these steps - take a a look at this guide
Sep 4, 2026 12:05 pm
Aye aye, cap'n. I'm assuming character creation is something we'll do in plenum, so I just filled in some basics and submitted just now!
Sep 4, 2026 1:37 pm
That's exactly right what you did. Now take a look at your ROlls section in this chat - if you click our PC name you will see some tables with clickable items
Click some of them and see how rolls are added automatically
https://i.postimg.cc/s28FXSmY/file4.png
Then change your PC dex/str/.... and try that again

Then add some weapons to your character sheet - and look how it lets your roll attacks without recalling the formula

You thought a step further than I did. I already made a character, but I can change it if it suits the group.

Here is a link to my RP, I put it in a google doc:

Here comes a test of rolling a dice.

Rolls

Longsword to hit - (1d20+5)

(15) + 5 = 20

Longsword damage - (1d8+3)

(7) + 3 = 10

Sep 4, 2026 3:46 pm
I think we are done with "tutorial" :) , congrats.

Meanwhile feel free to test more dice rolling in this thread. You can try rolling with advantage clicking A and disadvantage clicking D next to modifier. You can test writing custom rolls here in this thread.
Optionally: you can test using Replay markup (bold, italic and what not - read this guide if you are interested) but it is not required to know to play

@Thorstmixx how about you? Please do a post with a roll from your character sheet so that I feel comfortable about this tutorial.
Sep 4, 2026 4:00 pm
Actually one more important for DnD lesson. Please go ahead and do a post with basic roll read- free text such as rolling ability scores and type roll "4d6h3, 4d6h3, 4d6h3, 4d6h3, 4d6h3, 4d6h3"
See what you got - you will need to do this in the Session 0 thread

Rolls

4d6h3, 4d6h3, 4d6h3, 4d6h3, 4d6h3, 4d6h3

4d6h3 : (3214) = 9

4d6h3 : (3131) = 7

4d6h3 : (2664) = 16

4d6h3 : (2536) = 14

4d6h3 : (5363) = 14

4d6h3 : (5616) = 17

Making an int check!

Rolls

Intelligence check - (1d20+0)

(4) = 4

Sep 4, 2026 4:09 pm
Investigation check; manually changed the +2 to a +4 because of expertise, which I wasn't able to spot as a toggle in the sheet.

Rolls

Investigation [Expertise] (advantage) - (2d20H1+4)

(1220) + 4 = 24

Sep 4, 2026 4:11 pm
Here goes.

Rolls

Attempt to roll stats, as instructed. - (4d6h3, 4d6h3, 4d6h3, 4d6h3, 4d6h3, 4d6h3)

4d6h3 : (6156) = 17

4d6h3 : (1315) = 9

4d6h3 : (3446) = 14

4d6h3 : (5111) = 7

4d6h3 : (3631) = 12

4d6h3 : (2341) = 9

Sep 4, 2026 4:12 pm
Yikes, okay. Test completed, have I graduated? Haha

gamerspalne 5e template do not support expertise and half proficiency. If you run a PC with any of these you will either do that manually or use custom template instead. See here. Note that I am as a player only using custom sheets last few years because of flexibility, but it may be a bit confusing at the beginning.
Sep 4, 2026 4:35 pm
Here is my attempt to role the stats.

Rolls

My RP stats - (4d6h3, 4d6h3, 4d6h3, 4d6h3, 4d6h3, 4d6h3)

4d6h3 : (2256) = 13

4d6h3 : (1266) = 14

4d6h3 : (1621) = 9

4d6h3 : (2116) = 9

4d6h3 : (2133) = 8

4d6h3 : (1366) = 15

Right, that's fine. It's just the one skill that I have expertise in, I'll just do it manually for now!

Two more things you can do with your charactersheet are:
1. Define your class/species/background special features, not just your origin feat at "Feature" list as well as define your spells known/prepared in spells list. Once you done that you will be able to one-click post that feature description to your next post helping me as DM to understnad what feature are you performing or what spell are you casting

2. You can use your notes or items to record spell slots used, focus points spent, and what not. Let me illustrate how I did that

Here is my 5.0 artificer characterseet, I hope you have access to .
[ +- ] How I define features
Now I can in the game click features-> Dwarven Resilience.
https://i.postimg.cc/1tVbQdZT/file1.png

And it will automatically ad to my post text this:
[ +- ] Dwarven Resilience.
2. Same way I'm defining list of spells and then I'm using notes section to record any reosurces I've used i.e. this character have used all of it's spell slots bout could still do Fury of the Small

Resources used:
Fury of the Small: 0
Spell slot lvl 1: 4 (of 4)
Spell slot lvl 2: 3 (of 3)
Sorcery points: 4 (of 4)

P.S. Extra - I am used to add spells that require to hit roll to weapons table - though they are no weapons, it help me rolling these in game faster
https://i.postimg.cc/G3QxpQhD/file2.png
Same way you could add unarmed strikes and what not to the table

Weirdly, I'm unable to see any of your screenshots. It tells me the content is unavailable in my country (I'm in the UK)
Sep 7, 2026 2:56 pm
Oh right, there was indeed issue with https://imgur.com/ banned at UK. I will search later the forum if anyone had any reasonable workaround and come back
Sep 7, 2026 3:03 pm
I've found this post not sure if that is still working script and if you are OK to install scripts into your browser
Sep 7, 2026 3:58 pm
The other 'work-around' others have been using is to upload the picture to another site then copy the URL and use that to post the image here. This has been working well in the game that I am running.
Sep 8, 2026 5:54 am
@MrSaxon does this work for you:

Now I can in the game click features-> Dwarven Resilience.

It does, though it's very small.
Sep 8, 2026 8:13 am
[ +- ] Unamoured Defense

Rolls

Wisdom check - (1d20+3)

(1) + 3 = 4

Good. Will later rework my past posts moving pictures to other server and will figure out how to fix size. Not today though. Busy
Sep 8, 2026 8:25 am
[ +- ] Level 2: Fighting Style: Archery

Rolls

Longbow - Attack - (1d20+9)

(7) + 9 = 16

Longbow - Damage - (1d8+5)

(1) + 5 = 6

Sep 8, 2026 8:59 am
Testing my spell's Rolls…
[ +- ] Cure Wounds

Rolls

Cure Wounds - (2d8+3)

(14) + 3 = 8

Sep 8, 2026 4:01 pm
@MrSaxon I guess all pictures in this thread are now converted for you to see, let me know if any still have problem
Sep 8, 2026 10:38 pm
That's fantastic. I can see them all perfectly now!
Sep 10, 2026 12:57 pm
OK, I've got a bit of time to review your character sheets and come back with some questions

Atticus : 1. Are you sure your wizard is capable to learn Hellish Rebuke , which is not from wizard spell list (it's warlock's. you are not connected to hell are you?) 2. The spells listed are in your spellbook right, which one do you have prepared day 1 of adventure? I guess just 6 of them (not counting cantrips)

Fang: seems got, though technically in 2024 you have Orc not half-orc features. You can be half-orc in gameplay, but technically we say your character have Orc origin. Just a nuance, you can leave your charactersheet as is.

Garran : are you sure your initiative is +4? I guess it is +3 (dex give you +1 and alert +2). Also don't miss you have Weapon Mastery (you need to select three kinds of Simple or Martial weapons for your day 1). What are you languages known?

Krynt: are you sure you have +10 to initiative. I can see +7 (5+2), but where does the other 3 come from?

Good observation. It should be fixed now. I also created a version of the character on D&D Beyond, link to form is in Notes.

Hellish Rebuke comes from my Fiendish Legacy feature that I get for being a Tiefling:
[ +- ] Fiendish Legacy
As for the second question, yes, the spells I've listed are all the ones in my spellbook. I will mark the ones I have prepared so it is clear!

Edit: I marked all my prepared spells with asterikses* so you know which ones I've got ready to go. There are 8 in total; 6 from the base wizard spellcasting feature at 3rd level, and 2 more: Shield, which I always have prepared because I took it through the Magic Initiate feat, and Hellish Rebuke because I got it from my racial feature. On top of those, I picked a bunch of ritual spells that don't need to be prepared. That should be all of them now.

Good catch. A leftover from before I got hold of the updated rules. I've amended my sheet.
