Session Zero: Character Creation

Be sure to read and follow the community guidelines.

Method Two: Roll 4d6. Discard the lowest-scoring die and total the remaining three. Do this for each of the six attributes. Once the six scores are generated, each score is assigned to an attribute of the player’s choice.

Maximum Hit Points

Maximum Starting gold to purchase equipment.

I will normally post daily - exception is Sundays (that's family day)

If you have any questions let me know. I dont' know if someone is making a character sheet or not, but you can post characters in your thread. You will have one in order to keep your own notes and stuff.

A Fighter, a Ranger and a Cleric are recommended.

roll the entire thing over

You need a 15 and a 13 in your stat block.

Gesh: 14, 14, 14, 11, 10, 6 ... Still no 15 & 13 in stat block. Try again.

Woot: 15, 14, 12, 12, 10, 8 ... There you go. That works. Fairly average rolls.

Thinking a male Half-Orc Ranger.

I don't know how to add a character sheet, but I made one that seems to be very basic, but might work. Anyone know how I can do that?
Jul 1, 2026 3:13 pm
Done it a long time ago and forgotten. Generally, I have found it takes considerable time to make a really sweet character sheet. I have started making the character now, but I really don't create a nice sheet till I have everything about the character done. That way I can make a character sheet that encompasses the whole character well. The first workings of the character are applied while I'm creating it now.

GM: If you have any suggestions on background/history for the character, I'm open to thoughts. I'm working on Zugor the male Half-Orc ranger and have a picture done.

I added a thread with the character sheet, all you have to do is copy the code.
Jul 1, 2026 9:36 pm
Who is Zugor? I see now. I approved Zugor. Most impressive!
Jul 1, 2026 9:48 pm
Zugor isn't complete yet, but the format of the character sheet is fairly much done. Going to take a time or three yet to complete. I have used a format similar to the one now & it looked fairly good when I did use it.

Still could use some placement idea for where Zugor's prior 25 years of life were and where he is now at the start of the game? I'm not at all familiar with the setting.

Same here, I could use a little bit of setting context if you can provide. The map is quite useful!

If it’s all the same to you and as much as I appreciate the character sheet, I think I’d prefer to leave my character information freeform. Is that alright?
Jul 2, 2026 12:32 am
Yepper @Apidae, I'm using my own creation for a character sheet. I have run into similar issues with no fine character sheet, so I developed my own style.

Just looked over the system for encumbrance. Me thinks unless we get a donkey or such that we will not be carrying much. That is to be not burdened.

For a while, I have turned on the library, so you take a looksie.

You enclose your character sheet template between the following tags:

[charsheet="C&C character sheet"]
[/charsheet]

You can then post it in the forum I linked earlier, so that it is shown in the first post of the thread.

Found out to move unburdened is a lot of time in math. System doesn't allow you to carry much of anything besides what you need and still move unburdened. Zugor has coin but carry anything bought tends to be more complicated.
Jul 2, 2026 8:43 pm
Seems like you're carrying 10 EV and have a limit of 18.
Jul 2, 2026 10:36 pm
Zugor is wearing Greek Ensemble (Breastplate, Normal Helm, Bronze Armor Leg Greaves & Arm Greaves), Heavy Boots, and a Girdle for his Bastard Sword & Throwing Hand Axe which all together is 12 EV of encumbrance. He has a Small Belt Pouch, Backpack, & 2 Large Sacks for another 6 EV of encumbrance. Together that 18 EV which is his maximum encumbrance and still be unburdened.

He has carry capacity of 2 EV for found loot which isn't very much considering 16 coins to 1 EV which is why a suggestion of a hauling mount would be sweet. A nice donkey with lots of large sacks on it. Zugor has 69 gold coins free on him.

He has 7 days of rations & waterskin for survival and a Hammock & Bedroll combo for camping out. When not in armor, he has a change of clothing with him.

He may be an ugly one to look at but he is fast moving & rather dangerous. Night time is his friend.

I have some cash leftover; I’m picking up a pony, bridle, and some saddlebags. However I couldn’t find rules for exactly how much a pony can carry so I’ll just assume it’s a pretty good amount for now.
Jul 3, 2026 4:00 pm
Gold indicates the amount of gold the animal can carry - specifically gold coin. They make a case that coins can vary in size and weight. I don't really care about that much bean counting. Coins all weigh the same as far as I'm concerned. Old school.

We almost done with character creation?

I'd like to begin on Tuesday if everyone is ready by then.

Mule (Uzguk means 'fearless'): Bit and Bridle, Saddle, Saddle Bags, Saddle Blanket, Feed Sack, Pack Saddle, Padded Barding & 5 Days Mule Feed.

Zugor couldn't afford a war pony or perhaps light war horse. He (5'4" tall) is almost too tall to really ride a pony. And the mule in combat is likely buck him off. It is just ridable pack mount.

We could all get pack animals and just form a little trading caravan for the game. Win the goblins over with spices and wine :)

We could all get pack animals and just form a little trading caravan for the game. Win the goblins over with spices and wine :)

For the amount of trade goods that Zugor could afford for winning over the goblin's, well my mule (Uzguk) for a meal is worth more. Meaning that Zugor is close to broke. Me thinks the goblin would be interested in us for slave labor/dinner than any trade goods. Any trade goods on us would be extra bonus to them.

Everyone owning a pack animal is cool. Better odds at least one will survive. There is a reason some people name their pack mounts 'Extra Rations'.

Besides, the only good goblin is a dead one. Zugor can tell you that in fluent Goblin too. Let's you know exactly how much he likes them.

Zugor thoughts would be more in the line to raid/kill Goblins and place loot on Uzguk.

With no background suppled to each of us, anyone want to join Zugor in the personal history is fine.

Does religion have any kind of importance for non-cleric characters in this game? If yes, what are the options?
Jul 8, 2026 1:47 am
There is very litle interactions between the gods and the people, however, most folks in this world are religious. See the Graffenvold thread for more information.
Jul 8, 2026 10:52 pm
I have three characters. Waiting for Apidae...I will send a message.
Jul 19, 2026 9:24 am
So let’s see what the dice roller provides to start with.

Those are relatively low. I saw this up in the thread:
umbraldragon says:
OOC:

Does this mean I can/should reroll?

I will, just to gain some time. If unnecessary or not alllowed, we can discard the second set of stats.

Or the third. No, if we can, we’ll keep the third. Or we’ll build from the first roll.

And we currently have a fighter, a ranger, a cleric and a thief?
Jul 20, 2026 12:48 pm
Also, are we allowing the optional multi-classing rules?
Jul 21, 2026 1:44 pm
We have no wizard, which makes me want to play one. I have flirted with the idea of a multiclass wizard-something, probably an elf.

I really liked the idea of an elven knight with some, minor spellcasting (class and a half option, with knight as main class and wizard as secondary class), but that makes for a rather complicated split in the stats (two primaries 17 cha and 14 int, and a 17 str as secondary), a very slow progression (as both classes are costly), low hp for a melee character, and a rather limited selection of spells to use, since there are some armor incompatibilities. Could work if elven knights were expected to use bows, rather than melee combat, but I don’t think that to be the case… the castle keeper might clarify this point, perhaps?

Another option, probably an easier build, would be an elven wizard with a secondary rogue class. Progression would be a bit faster, and they could use intelligence and dexterity as primary abilities…

And then again, I could just create a simple human wizard.

Mind made up. Working on the character as I write this.

I have just submitted Sibylla, known in her native dialect as Anairë Petals-come-dancing. Elf wizard and (half) rogue. I have to sort out her equipment and appearance, but I’d like too know if I’m on the right path to completing the character, @umbraldragon.
Jul 26, 2026 5:47 pm
So I've pretty much finished my character sheet, with a number of questions :
- is the general background ok / compatible with the world ? I have taken some inspiration from a more faerie-like folkloric elven archetype (a bit more Dolmenwood and or Vance's Lyonesse...). It might be that this is totally at odds with the general feel of elves in C&C, I wouldn't know...
- Languages : I've copied whats on the Player's book, but I understand there are at least two languages spoken by humans here, and a number of different dialects for humanoids. Could I get some clarification on what she knows or doesn't? Depending on your answer, I might pick comprehend languages rather than another spell...
- are Sibylla's class features ok ? Not sure she has the correct skills for her 0-level rogue side (I understand she has any skills that involve checks, but not the skills that don't, like 'Back attack' or 'cant')
- I have picked Sibylla's desired spells, but p.47 of the rulebook states that spells can be chosen by the Castle Keeper, the player, or selected randomly, so please let me know what her spells are. Also, what is the EV and weight for a spellbook?
- what deity would be appropriate for elves. Sibylla will probably not be devout in, any way, but might find cultural meaning in belonging to a religious tradition.
- After acquiring her belongings, Sibylla has a grand total of 5sp to her name (I assume she has the clothes on her body for free, if not she'll have to forego rations). When carrying her backpack with spell book and rations, she is burdened. If she wears a cloak, she is burdened. Is that ok from your perspective, @umbraldragon?

Looks good, I'll get your spell book tomorrow up to date and I will read through your backstory.

Apologies, I have looked at your character.
You start with 4 Cantrips
Arcane Rune
Discern Magic
Discover Poison
Message

And 4 Level one Spells
Arcane Armor
Read Arcane Script
Sleep
Summon Familiar

You also have a wand, given to you by your master, that has a capacity for 30 spell components, ie the entire components for 1 spell is 1 slot no matter if there is one component, or 5 components, that slot is enough to contain the components for 1 spell. So you will have to determine how many times you may cast a spell with your wand of components. This is free and costs no money and is based on the spells you currently have in your spell book. The wand allows you to cast "Transfer components" when you have all the components ready for the spell in question. No more searching or catagorizing your components, just cast the spell, since you already have the components in the wand.

You also get 50 xp each time you cast a level one spell. This increases later.

I like your background. You are ready for action!!

Great, I’ll get to updating the spells on my character sheet. I’ve been meaning to ask, what version/edition of C&C are we using? I can’t find "arcane armour" in the 7th printing which I used to create the character.

Since Sibylla has the summon familiar spell, it would make sense that she have summoned her familiar prior to her meeting the party. Do you want to roll or decide which familiar she has (in relation to her backstory or the needs of the campaign), or should I just roll a d20 as indicated in the spell description?

I will send a roll, just in case. Unless you decide otherwise, Sibylla’s familiar is a hawk. I’ll roll hp for it according to the summary description on the PHB. Very lucky roll, really starting to want to keep this hawk… :-P

A few last questions, though we can start without my having full responses to them:
- what are the weight and EV for the spell book and for the wand (the wand would make the spell component pouch less necessary, but I’ll keep it for now.
- what are Sibylla’s saving throw / check values ?
- what languages would she actually know, given how there doesn’t seem to be a single ‘common’ tongue, or a single ‘goblin’ tongue?
