Has anyone played this? I was quite the fan of the classic Cortex system (I ran Firefly with it), and am wondering how a game of Supernatural might work over a long-term campaign using those rules.

I bought the book once. Was a fan of Cortex myself, but never was able to bring the game to the table sadly. And every PbP i played in died out in its infancy.

That's unfortunate.

It's a nice simple system: attributes and skills and traits are assigned a die type, and applicable dice are rolled together, summed up, and compared to a target number.

So if your hunter has Agility d8 and Guns d6, you'd roll them together, total, and compare to the difficulty.

Haven't actually played (nor watched) Supernatural. I have tried Cortex briefly here for a fantasy academic game, and was not too impressed, but perhaps part of the reason is that the game had many of the bells and whistles disabled (like SFX and Distinctions). I do want to try Cortex 'for real' (with most of the mainline mechanics, and for more than a brief single chapter) at least once before a final verdict (because I don't want to jump to conclusions), but I'm mostly interested in the dramatic version of it and not the action/adventure/&c. one.

Sounds like you played the later version of Cortex. We're on about Cortex Classic, which was used for Battlestar Galactica, Serenity, and Supernatural.

I've run Supernatural campaigns twice, for two different in person troupes. Totally loved it, could be mainly the players there, of course, but I found no issues with the system.

It should be noted that one of my players in the second game was 65, and a total novice to role-playing in general, and I used the game to teach her how to play. Worked just fine.

Yeah, Cortex Classic was very simple to learn and run. Felt the same when I ran Serenity.

I've been watching Supernatural, and it made me dig out the rulebook again, along with my old character ideas.

Found my old character stats for my hunter. This was a character in an online, solo game, which is why she began more experienced and plot-centric (to make up for the lack of other player character support).

Sounds interesting. Does anybody have some reference material I can check out and get a feel for the system?
